They said it well---

with comments.

“Accept yourself and don’t feel

put down when you realize you

are not Superman, but rather and

ordinary Clark Kent. It’s really

okay not to be perfect.”--- DR.TOM HAGGAI (But just try to

convince your team captain)

“I not only use all the brains I

have but all I can borrow.”---

WOODROW WILSON (So don’t

ever turn down good bowling

advice or instruction)

“It’s not a sin if you don’t win,

but it’s a tragedy if you don’t try.”

---HAL MORRIS (And don’t you

 just hate tragedies)

“The most important thing is to

set a goal---and never give up.

Never take anybody else’s work

that something can’t be done. That only means they can’t do

it.”---JACKIE GLEASON (If you

don’t believe him ask such all-

time greats Billy Hardwick and

Don Johnson)

“Ninety percent of this game, I

think, is 50 percent mental.”---

YOGI BERRA (And that’s why

you should always double check

your scorekeeper)

“There is very little difference in

people, but that little difference is

whether it is positive or nega-

tive.”---CLEMENT STONE

(Now you know why, though 60pro bowlers may have about the

same ability, some will win $100,

and others $100,000)

“For fast-acting relief try slow-

ing down.”--- LILY TOMLIN

(Especially when the lanes are

loaded with oil)

“Our doubts are traitors, and

make us lose the good we oft

might win, by fearing to

attempt.”---SHAKESPEARE

(Go for it, that new grip, that bet-

ter league, that tournament

you’ve been eager to enter)

“Society is well governed when

the people obey the magistrates,

and the magistrates obey the

law.”—SOLON (And so in bowl-

ing)

“As I approve of a youth thathas something of the old man in

him, so I am no less pleased with

an old man that has something of

the youth.” ---CICERO (Take

bows, Mark Roth and Carmen

Salvino)

“Laughter is not just a pleasure.

It’s a necessity.” ---CHARLES

SCHULTZ (Where would any

bowler be if they didn’t laugh now

and then, at opponents, at team-

mates, at themselves)

“Some people are like bad

checks. They look good, but you

can’t bank on them.”---MELIS-

SA WIDNER (If you’re going tomake a list of bowlers fitting this,

better get a large pad)

“When fate hands us a lemon,

let’s try to make lemonade.”---

DALE CARNEGIE (Think about

that when you run into a tough

scoring pair of lanes)

“Luck is the residue of design.”-

-- SYLVIA MARETT (Always

remember, you can’t practice

luck)

“There is a fine line between

decoration and desecration.” ---

RICH RICKMAN (Easily distin-guished when you go to any bowl-

ing center restroom)

“Be civil to all, sociable to many,

familiar with few, friend to one,

enemy to none.”--- BENJAMIN

FRANKLIN (And that’s the way

to win nice guy and good sports-

manship awards)

“To really know a man, observe

his behavior with a woman, a flat

tire, and a child.”---MARCE-

LENE COX (And watch him real

close after he runs into three 10

pin taps in a row)

I asked for more junior bowling news, and our

young people didn’t disappoint.

At age 11, Adam Gelvan is already a seasoned vet-

eran of the game and an old hand at winning. This

Montville Township youngster has multiple honors

already, among them are: Elite Invitational tourna-

ment at Hanover Lanes, first place, 2011 Pepsi Youth

Championship, second place, Sixth Annual

Scholarship Tournament in Jersey Lanes, fourth, Pin

Gobblers at Jersey Lanes, first place. Additionally

Boonton Lanes gave him a Most Improved trophy.

For his most recent title he qualified in his age divi-

sion (11 and under) with games of 186, 96 and 150.

For the final rounds he posted 192 and 156. He

already has a high single game of 202 and series of

416.

He started bowling as an 8 year old and says the

best part of bowling “is the sound of a strike!” He

bowls in the Saturday Youth Bowlers league and the

Stan Niemiec Travel League (Morris and Bergen

County). This is in addition to all the tournaments.

A student at William Mason Elementary School,

Adam lives with his parents Mark and Lina and

brother Michael. His immediate bowling goal is to

 post a 250 game.

As if this phenom isn’t enough, there was an unusu-

al story going on at Rockaway Lanes. A 75-year-old

bowler had an apparent heart attack after his league

night at Rockaway Lanes. Christa Fairclough was

bowling with her family and had just learned CPR at

Morris Knolls High School. She sprang into action

and revived the man enough to have him transported

to St. Clare’s Hospital. The best part of this is that the

local police credited her with life-saving. Many

media outlets picked up on the story. One website fol-

lowed the article with a short film on how to perform

CPR. Well done, Christa!

If we do not pay attention to these events, we can easily miss the opportunities."

STATEN ISLAND, NY - Leonardo Duran came out

on top when he defeated Michael Calabrese with a

254-180 score earning the $250.00 first place schol-

arship prize in the The 6th Annual Gold Shootout that

took place recently at Rab’s Country Lanes.

Youth athletes who are members of the USBC

Junior Gold Program were eligible to compete in the

event to vie for the title, scholarship awards, and their

place in the 2012 North Pointe Junior Gold

Championships to be held in Indianapolis, IN.

Athletes bowled 4 games in the qualifying round.

After the qualifying round, the top 8 bowlers

advanced to the Finals where they bowled in a two-

game elimination bracket. Athletes bowled twogames in each match in the finals, until the final

match, where one game determines the Champion.

Going into the finals in order were: Brandon

Soedarmasto 827, Leonardo Duran 822, Tommy

Genova, Jr.806, Michael Calabrese 783, Alyson

Piergiovanni 780, Justin Borneo 791, Michael

Martell 759 and Timothy Barclay 756.

When the dust settled it was Duran on top followed

by Calabrese, Soedarmasto, and Barclay finishing in

the money.

The top 2 male and top 2 female athletes competing

in this event earned spots to compete in the 2012

North Pointe Junior Gold Championships. Alyson

Piergiovanni, Lauren Zaluk, Michael Calabrese, and

Leonardo Duran earned these elusive spots.

In 2012 the North Pointe Junior Gold

Championships presented by Brunswick (A USBC

Event) took on a new name and sponsor. The North

Pointe Insurance Group has donated $100,000 to the

scholarship fund of the National

Championships. This event will now guarantee a$250,000 scholarship prize fund to over 2,100 ath-

letes. The event now features four divisions for ath-

letes to compete: U15 Boys and Girls and U20 Boys

and Girls. Bowlers ages 15 & under will automatical-

ly be placed in the U15 division and will have the

opportunity to “play-up” if they so choose.
