LAS VEGAS – Amateur Russ Davies

of Las Vegas won the most memorable

match of his career by defeating PBA

Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr.

to win the PBA50 South Point West

Open presented by Track regional at

the South Point Bowling Plaza. The 60-year-old Davies defeated

Williams 217-206 in the tit le match for

his first PBA title in the concluding

event of the inaugural PBA Fall

    Classic.

    “This is unbelievable,” said Davies,

primarily a local league and tourna-

ment bowler who is a member of the

Southern Nevada Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

“It’s the highlight of my career for sure. There’s noth-

ing like winning a PBA title especially when you can

do it by beating one of the all-time greats.”

Davies got off to an early lead in the

title match by starting with the first

three strikes and was able to hold off

Williams for the rest of the match.

Williams struck on the final ball of the

10th frame forcing Davies to mark.

The lefthander left a six pin and then

picked up the spare in the final frameto clinch the win.

“Let’s face it, I’m the underdog so I

was pretty calm for most of the

match,” said Davies who finished 22nd

in the 1974 Showboat Invitational as

an amateur. “When it came down to

having to pick up that six pin for the

win, I’ll admit I got a little nervous.”

In the semifinal match, Williams defeated Jeff

Jamison of Boulder City, Nev., 248-234, and Davies

beat Mike Kanada of Camarillo, Calif., 229-224, to

    J o a n Ta y l o r ’ s . . . . .

    Te n P i n R a p . . . . .Jack Vander Meulen, a Bowling Hero

This starts out as a “normal” article about a youth bowler who is a credit to collegiate bowl-

ing. After only 5 years of youth bowling, this young man has not only posted two perfect

games but also had his first at the national Junior Gold tournament in Chicago. More recent-

ly, Jack Vander Meulen, 19, rolled a 300 at Rockaway Lanes in the Friday night junior league.

In Chicago, he rolled the 300 in his third game of the Storm Survivor Tournament, which

was held after the qualifying rounds. He came in 35th out of 635 boys, no small feat in itself.

For that he earned scholarship dollars.

He also credits parents Cathy and Bob for family support. “I always love when both of themwatch me bowl.” They were in Chicago for Junior Gold and to witness their son’s achieve-

    ment.

He took up bowling at Oratory Prep in Summit and made varsity during his freshman year.

Jack is now a sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison (NJ). He bowls in 3

leagues per week including Friday nights at Rockaway, Saturday morning juniors at Hanover,

and on Sundays, in a Junior Gold Traveling League at Sparta Lanes, Rockaway and Warwick.

He gave a shout-out to Dave Kinney for putting the traveling league together. “He’s a great

guy. He runs the league and tries to send as many people out to Nationals every year, but does-

n’t get the credit he deserves.”

Vander Meulen is studying Hotel and Restaurant Management and would like to someday

own a restaurant and get into the food management side of the business. Meanwhile, he aver-

ages 227 in his highest league, and resides in Madison with his parents, and brothers Bobby,

    22 and Billy, 21.

Just a regular junior bowler, right? And now for the rest of the story. At age 4, Jack was

diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder known as Evans Syndrome. Every month he

takes in an infusion of medication. This may have been a factor in what happened to him a

few years ago when he was diagnosed with Stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, also knownas Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma. He had been losing significant weight over 2 weeks and

had a lymph node biopsy conducted at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Five rounds of chemotherapy followed the diagnosis. He had to have his spleen and part of

his right lung removed. A close friend, Nick Sanato, held a fundraiser in June of 2014 to help

with the astronomical medical bills. All Jack wanted to do was to get back to bowling. He said

that the chemo gave him “horrible neuropathy in my feet, which resulted in nerve damage.

For a couple of weeks I used a one step approach.” Then he tried his traditional 4 steps and

was able to bowl his game.

For the past 4 months he took some time off, as the chemo had affected his stamina.

Returning to bowling, he says he “is taking it week by week. I enter occasional Junior Bowler

Tour tournaments here and there.” And to no surprise, his goal is to post an 800 series. Like

our other county “health heroes” he doesn’t dwell on what life has handed him. He simply

wants to bowl his best and enjoy the sport. Jack, you are truly a Rockstar!

“BAD BOY OF BOWLING” EARNING GREAT REVIEWS

The “Bad Boy of Bowling” documentary centered around PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber’s

colorful career has yet to make its debut on ESPN’s “30 for 30” series, but producer Bryan

Storkel said the film continues to earn great reviews as it tours the nation’s film festivals.

“The film has played at over 25 festivals and has gotten a great response everywhere we've

shown it,” Storkel said. “We've played in San Francisco, Boston, Baltimore, Maui, Palm

Springs, Indianapolis, Portland, Seattle, Milwaukee and many more.”

The film is scheduled for additional screenings in November, including the St. Louis Film

Festival in Weber’s hometown Nov. 14 (where Weber will make a personal appearance to

answer questions); Nov. 16 at Doc NYC in New York City, and at the Cucalorus Film Festival

    in Wilmington, N.C., Nov. 12-14.

    By Bill Vint - PBA

LAS VEGAS – “Dead Money” is a

poker term related to the money left

in the pot by players who have fold-

ed. It also is the name a team of five

    relatively untested bowlers gave

    themselves before upsetting a high-

    ly-decorated team of Professional

    Bowlers Association stars in the

    inaugural PBA Team Challenge at

    the South Point Bowling Plaza.

The PBA Team Challenge, a first-

    of-its-kind five-player team compe-

tition for the sport’s most talented

players, was conducted as part of

    the multi-event South Point

    Bowling Plaza Fall Classic.

    Dead Money featured a lineup

    including PWBA Tour

    Championship winner Danielle

McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y., who

stepped into the lineup to replace

injured Alex Aguiar (who came up

with the team name); one-time PBA

    Regional winners Alex Cavagnaro of

    Massapequa, N.Y., and Matt

    O’Grady of Matawan, N.J.; one-time

PBA Tour winner Anthony Pepe of

    Elmhurst, N.Y., and 30-year-old PBA

rookie Matt McNiel of Prior Lake,

Minn., who made his PBA Tour

    debut during the Fall Classic.

    With McNiel bowling anchor,

Dead Money put together a string

of six strikes to take a 249-234 lead

after the first game of the two-game

Baker format title match and locked

    up a 497-452 victory by out-bowl-

ing “4 Majors and 100 at 1” in the

    second game, 248-218.

    Combined, the five Dead Money

players have won one PBA Tour

title. The top-seeded “4 Majors and

    100 at 1” own a combined 46 titles

    including PBA Tour major champi-

    onship by Bill O’Neill of

    Langhorne, Pa.; Tommy Jones of

    Simpsonville, S.C.; Wes Malott of

    Pflugerville, Texas, and Jason

    Belmonte of Australia. Tom

    Daugherty of Wesley Chapel, Fla.,

the fifth team member, is known for

     bowling a nationally-televised 100

game in “one” major – the 2011

    PBA Tournament of Champions.

“We all kind of grew up together

bowling in Junior Gold and other

    tournaments, and we’re good

friends,” McNiel said of his team’s

chemistry. “The big thing for us was

throwing good shots and having a

good time, and we had a blast.”

In the first match, 900 Global

    Phoenix, with a lineup featuring

four past or current Arizona State

    University collegiate bowlers plus

    Phoenix-based Michael Haugen Jr.,

a four-time PBA Tour winner, elim-

inated Team Brunswick in the first

    two-game Baker format match, 471-

    411. PBA rookie Jakob Butturff, a

    21-year-old lefthander, threw seven

strikes in eight attempts as 900

    Global’s anchor bowler.

    Dead Money then ousted 900

    Global, rallying from a 43-pin

deficit after game one with a 278

game to win the match, 493-484.

McNiel threw two strikes in the

10th frame to lock up Dead

    Money’s comeback.

    The round-robin match play com-

     petition leading into the stepladder

finals included a Baker format 300

    game by Team Brunswick’s Walter

Ray Williams Jr., Sean Rash, Tom

    Smallwood, Jason Sterner and

anchor bowler Parker Bohn III, the

    all-time leader in 300 games

     bowled in PBA competition (104).

    Williams, Rash, Smallwood and

    Sterner each threw two strikes.

Bohn struck in the fifth frame and

    completed the perfect game with

the final three strikes in the 10th.

There continues to be a number of rumors circling around the industry about our business. We had our Financial Consultant address the league officers recently and he attempted toprovide information first to the league members and second to our loyal customers.
