A R L I N G T O N ,
Texas - Kelly Kulick
of Union, N.J., and
Bill O'Neill of Southampton, Pa.,
capped off impres-
sive years by being
named 2010 female
and male Bowlers of
the Year by the
Bowling Writers
Association of
America.
Kulick had one of
the greatest years of
any bowler in 2010. In January, she became the first
woman to win a Professional Bowlers Association
national title in the PBA Tournament of Champions. In
April, she captured her second United States Bowling
Congress Queens title. And just two weeks later, she won
the U.S. Women's Open.
Those feats alone likely would have netted Kulick
the top 2010 honor but she wasn't finished. Later in the
year, she captured gold medals in doubles and team, sil-
ver in all-events and bronze in singles and trios in the
Pan American Confederation Women's
Championships.
She also won a
PBA regional in
Lakewood, Wash.,and the Malaysian
Open.
For the year, she
averaged 219.32
and earned $46,440
in the PBA
Women's Series.
O'Neill nearly
matched Kulick. He
captured the Men's
U.S. Open and the
PBA Pepsi Viper
Championship, was runner-up in the PBA World
Championships and fifth in the USBC Masters. He also
earned gold medals in the singles, all-events and team
events in the World Tenpin Bowling Association World
Championships.
O'Neill averaged 222.32 and earned $140,565 during
PBA competitions held in 2010.
Kulick and O'Neill will receive their awards in June
during the BWAA Annual Meetings and International
Bowl Expo in Grapevine, Texas.

Professional Bowling Stars
Head to Chicago for ShootoutCHICAGO - A unique showcase blending the highest level of talent
with the hottest trends in the recreational side of the sport will take
place over Memorial Day weekend when 20 of the world’s greatest
bowlers return to downtown Chicago for a unique team competition at
upscale 10pin bowling lounge in the landmark Marina City complex.
The GEICO PBA Team Shootout, the fifth annual PBA Summer
Series special event, will result in more than 15 hours of national
television on ESPN and ESPN2 over the summer months. It will be
the first appearance by PBA players in Chicago proper in 47 years.
“The return of team bowling to the heart of the city where many of
the greatest names in bowling history built their careers will present
the sport in an entirely new light,” said Professional Bowlers
Association Deputy Commissioner Tom Clark. The GEICO PBA Team Shootout, with the PBA Manufacturers
Cup as its ultimate prize, will be conducted in a “boutique” bowling
facility that calls House of Blues its next-door-neighbor and
includes a Who’s Who list of Chicago celebrities and business lead-
ers among its clients. 10pin bowling lounge has hosted hundreds of
special events, including high-profile fundraisers conducted by
Chicago Cubs pitching star Kerry Wood, Chicago Bears defensive
lineman Israel Idonije, Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent
Seabrook and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, a Chicago native,
among others.
The GEICO PBA Team Shootout will feature four teams of five
PBA stars who will compete in a variety of singles, doubles and
team matches, earning points toward the PBA Manufacturers Cup
for their respective sponsoring companies. It will be the first PBA
Tour event held in Chicago since the former Bowlium hosted the
1963 Chicago Coca-Cola Open when the PBA Tour was only five
years old.Reigning PBA Manufacturers Cup winner Storm Products will
defend its title against teams representing bowling ball manufactur-
ing rivals Brunswick, Ebonite International and 900 Global. Among
the PBA stars who will compete in Chicago are PBA Hall of Famer
Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J. (Brunswick); newly-named PBA
Player of the Year Mika Kovuniemi of Hartland, Mich., and PBA
Triple Crown winner Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas (Ebonite
International); newly-crowned USBC Queens champion Missy
Parkin of Lake Forest, Calif. (the only woman in the competition)
and PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss of Marietta, Ga. (900 Global);
and PBA Hall of Famers Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., and Pete
Weber, St. Ann, Mo. (Storm).
Chicagoland will be represented by four-time PBA Tour champion
Sean Rash of Montgomery (Brunswick) and seven-time Tour winner
Steve Jaros of Yorkville (900 Global).
Idle bowling thoughts.
...I still buy late lefty pioneer
Bill Allen's theory about clutch
bowling. "Over the years I
can't count the number of
strikes I've rolled, so what's one
more." he said. He had himself
convinced he could always get
one more and proved it by win-
ning many major titles in clutch
situations.
...Probably half the time you
spend on practice is wasted.
Problem is to determine what
half.
...Always try to reason with a
teammate. It will keep you
occupied while you lose your
temper, and remember that if
you stop praising the newest
bowler on a team he thinks his
teammates don't like him. Keep
praising him and he soon thinks
he is too good for the team.
...The main objective of any
instructor is to teach so well
that the student can get along
very well without the teacher.
...Senior bowling programs
are doing well from local
leagues to senior pro activities.
But future senior success is
totally dependent on how well
we succeed with current youth
programs.
A happy youth bowler today
may well be a happy seniorbowler more than a half centu-
ry in the future.
...The test of a great bowler
comes not when he is bowling
well, but how he manages when
he is rolling poorly.
...Bowling still needs a solid
national bowling show once a
week every week of every year.
...Nothing is funny when you
are hungry, your feet hurt, or
the corner pins aren't going
down.
...Every league bowler rolls
three sets each night, the one
they were going to roll, the one
they do bowl, and the one they
should have bowled.
...The longer you're in a
slump, the longer it seems. A
bad game doesn't really take
three hours to bowl and finish.
It just seems
that way.
...It is never too early to start
looking over tournament
blanks and reading them care-
fully. But I must admit that
there are many bowlers who
have their tournament schedule
planned six months ahead and
start shopping for birthday
gifts six hours before the impor-
tant date.
...After you hear two bowlers
talk about their match, and lis-
ten to those who watched and
gave their account of the con-
test, you begin to wonder about
history books.
...The longevity records in
bowling are amazing, century
old league and tournament,
bowlers who haven't missed or
been late to a league session for
decades, bowlers who keep a
record of every ball they ever
rolled. Most long term records
are hard to beat, and the first
plateau is the most difficult, liv-
ing in good health long enough.
...Unless you see them in
action you can't begin to realize
how good pro bowlers are over
the long run, and easy scoring
conditions give the wrongimpression, making the gap
between average bowlers and
top pros narrower. Pros can fig-
ure out ways to score well on
any condition. If tournaments
were conducted in bumpy park-
ing lots some pros would find a
way to average 220.
...While there is no such thing
as a bad bowler, a lot of them
can really fool you.

Frank Formicola of Rochester, a bowling tournament pro-
moter for more than 40 years and a former president of the
Greater Rochester Area Bowling Proprietors Association, and
the late Dick Battista, a Professional Bowlers Association Tour
champion and prominent bowler in the New York City area in
the 1960’s and ‘70’s, will be inducted into the New York State
Hall of Fame in June.
Results of the voting by the Empire
State USBC Bowling Association
Hall of Fame committee were
released today. Formicola and
Battista will be enshrined at the New
York State USBC Hall of Fame and
Awards Dinner at 6 p.m. June 11 at the
Carrier Circle Hotel in East Syracuse.Formicola is well known for his
efforts in starting the Lilac City
Bowling Tournament in Rochester in
1969, and developing it into the sec-
ond-largest independently operating
bowling tournament in the world. In
recent years, following a bout with
lung cancer, he has devoted his time into building the
Upstate New York Bowling Tournament, which has attract-
ed bowlers from 12 states and two Canadian provinces.
He has been involved in numerous bowling endeavors,
including the Young American Bowling Alliance, New York
State BPA tournaments and conventions, Fun Time Youth
Bowling and Greater Rochester BPA television shows, Empire
State Games, and Pro-Ams for the PBA and Ladies Pro
Bowlers Tour.
His community service includes leadership of the annual
Lupus Foundation Golf Tournament and the Rochester Press
Radio Club annual Day of Champions.
Battista made a name for himself in league and tournament
competition in New York City, at the ABC and USBC Open
Championships and the PBA Tour. His exemplary career was
cut short by illness and the need for a heart transplant. One of
the early recipients of a donor heart, he
was the first professional athlete to
return to his sport and compete again
after a heart transplant.
Locally, the left-hander won team
championships in the Metropolitan
Major Classic League, and posted the
league’s high series in 1963-64 and
1964-65 (705). He won the AssociationTournament team (1971), doubles
(1967) and singles (1974) champi-
onships – rolling a 739 scratch series to
capture the singles crown.
He won numerous regional tourna-
ments, including the PBA Eastern
Regional Ebonite championship in
1970 and the John Vargo Classic in 1971. At the national level,
he won the PBA Grand Rapids Open on Aug. 17, 1970, and
placed third at the 1971 Firestone Tournament of Champions.
Battista, a member of the New York Bowling Association
and New York Bowling Council Halls of Fame, registered nine
certified 300 games and an 802 series. He passed away on
Dec. 21, 1979 at the age of 48.
Women to Induct Allen, Johnson
Previously, the New York State USBC Women’s Bowling
Association announced its Hall of Fame inductees – Sheila
Allen of Peekskill and Marilyn Johnson of Poughkeepsie.
They, too, will be inducted at the June 11 awards dinner.
Sheila Allen will be inducted into the New York State USBC
Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame for Superior
Performance. The Peekskill resident and member of the
Westchester USBC, has six 800 series, eight 300 games and
eight 299 games. Her high series is
836, bowled in 2008.
She has won numerous tourna-
ments at the local and state level.
She represented New York as the
Team USA qualifier and won local
qualifiers for the U.S. Open. She
supports New York State bowling
and has bowled in 17 state tourna-ments as well as bowling in the New
York State Queens Tournaments.
She is a member of the Women’s All
Star Association (WASA) Hall of
Fame.
Marilyn Johnson will be inducted
for Meritorious Service. She is a
dedicated supporter of women’s bowling in New York State
and was a member of the New York State Women’s Bowling
Association Board of Directors. She served on the Queens
Tournament as the Chair and has been a member of the Miss
Liberty, Awards, Chaplain, Cancer Walks, Policy &
Procedures and Finance committees.
She is an active member of the state, national and local 600
clubs. She is a member of the Poughkeepsie Hall of Fame and
has been recognized by the Dutchess County Sports Museum
