Year 7 Evening of Song: Battle of the Sets!

Year 3 at Glastonbury Abbey Year 3 spent a glorious morning at Glastonbury Abbey this week, learning about the lives of monks 500 years ago. We were transported back in time to the Abbott’s kitchen where we were put to work collecting wood for the fires, cooking meat and vegetables, decorating pastries and pies and, of course, doing the washing up! We were then taught how to make toothpaste from herbs and spices, and a few brave volunteers even agreed to taste their own handiwork. A tour of the ruins followed with Brother John, who taught us all about the legends of Joseph

of Arimathea and King Arthur, before we were deemed ready to take our vows and dressed up in our monks robes.

Whilst we were at the Abbey we had the opportunity to present a cheque for over £3,000 to Sue Medlicott of the ‘Rescue Our Ruins’ charity who we have supported, alongside Millfield Pre-Prep, with various events over the last year including the Junior performance of ‘A Shakespearean Mash-Up Part 1.’ Luckily we had Shakespeare and the Jester on hand to help with the presentation.

Mrs Seal

Reminder: The Year 7 Moving up to Year 8 presentation starts at 5.45pm. You can attend this, enjoy some refreshments and then be ready for Year 7’s ‘Battle of the Sets’

EAL Pupil of the Week This week's EAL Pupil of the Week is Ilya Tkachenko. He has always worked hard and wanted to improve himself and recently his English has reached a level from which his high levels of imagination can create some great sentences. After Ilya and I tweaked the English in his writing, he created this very surreal piece during a recent EAL creative writing class:

“The sky talked to the grass. The sun gave food. The rain gave drink. I saw a blue forest. I was far from the forest. I ran like a dog and, tired like a horse, came to the forest. It was green like an artist's paint. I saw small animals in the trees and I asked myself was it a bird or a squirrel. I didn't know how and why they were alone here in the middle of the world. I saw a giant tree and my eyes turned green. It looked like a pretty tree, but was it a tree or a house? Could I go in? I took the thinnest stick and lightly touched the giant. The sun looked at the tree and the sky touched the tree. I think it is my forest and will never forget this.”

Year 7 Monitors All the Year 7 pupils were given an assembly this week by the Senior Monitors in Year 8. They spoke about all the different roles they do within school and performed some typical scene sketches which monitors have to deal with. All Year 7 pupils were then invited to apply to become a Monitor if they wish. We are looking to give the Year 7 pupils a trial run at the end of term to help with formal selection of Monitor and Senior Monitor status for September. If your son or daughter is interested please encourage them to read this letter and apply in writing by Monday 23 May.

“Having spent most of my life in transit, moving from one place to another, I have sometimes found it hard to find that one true best friend. Since coming to Millfield, I have not only found many friends, I have found my passion; horse-riding. I initially loaned a lovely dapple grey Irish sports horse named Mist and with him I had my first taste of that unique bond between horse and rider. Unfortunately Mist died unexpectedly; I was truly devastated.

Desperate not to let go of my newfound passion, I began the search for a new horse. My search for horses has taken me to various parts of the country, from Welshpool to Wells and nearly every village in between! The staff at Millfield Equestrian all kept an eye out for any new horses on the market, and they came with me to see any possible candidates.

I first went to view Casper on a cold and wet December day. Feeling the ominous effects of the weather, I was not all that hopeful at first. However, then appeared this stunning Andalusian Warmblood X with a sparky character. I fell head over heels for him! The following week Mrs Newman came down to view him. It was apparent that Casper was a bit of a ‘cheeky chappie’ with lots still to learn but there was, and still is, something undeniably special about him. Although Mrs Newman agreed, she warned me about how

much work I would have to put into him and that would mean a big commitment.

While the commitment has been big, it has been worth all the sweat, hours and tears. Being able to form a relationship in which both myself and Casper have grown, independently and as one, has been truly

inspiring. The stable staff have had to be very patient with me and Casper - who struggles with his stable manners at times! On this journey I feel I have learnt so much in such a short time. The bond that is being forged between Casper and I is truly amazing, he is my best friend, my confidant and I know he feels the same.

During the Easter holidays Casper and I took part in a riding clinic at the Senior School. The BE instructor commented on how well behaved Casper was and how in control I was of him. I was so proud to hear these comments. It is difficult to believe it was only a short while ago that Casper, desperate for food, dragged me into his stable defiantly. I certainly was not in control back then! My journey with Casper had its tentative and challenging moments; increasing to 75cm jumps felt like a leap of faith for me! However, I have not looked back since and am eagerly anticipating reaching that 100cm mark by the end of summer.

Owning a horse has really helped me to learn about responsibility. I can now appreciate that often the more you put in to something, the greater the reward. I cannot imagine my life without my wonderful horse and friend, Casper.”

Speech and Drama Showcase The Drama Showcase was performed by a selection of Speech and Drama pupils in Years 4-8 who gained 1st, 2nd 3rd or Commended at the Bath Festival in March. They recited poems and performed solo and duo acting scenes to a very high standard. The Showcase was attended by parents, relations, friends and staff.

Year 7 Marauders Maps In Year 7 Geography we have been studying maps and learning lots of new skills associated with them. One particular skill is the art of drawing a sketch map. One of my pupils brought in a version of the Marauders Map from Harry Potter, a map which allows Harry the ability to see where people are walking around the Hogwarts campus, but only if he ‘solemnly swears to be up to no good!’. Using this as inspiration, the pupils created their very own Millfield Marauders maps. The attention to detail and level of accuracy of the finished products was outstanding. Well done to all of the pupils for their hard work, in particular Elena Launder, Callum Harvey, Annabel Jeanes, Ben Lawson, Jess Hazell, Jao-Muang Jakpa, Lucy Wood, Ella Middleton, James Maxfield, Andrew Penney, Patience Rhodes and Alex Champion. Mrs Stubbs

Little Acts of Kindness Conor Donoghue (pictured centre) asked if he could have a table at May Fair in order to set up a little stall selling his own hand-drawn pictures. He made £12.83 on the day and instead of spending the money on sweets at the fair, he handed it to his houseparents and asked if it could be donated to The Lewis Moody Foundation. We thought that was a really nice gesture, well done Conor!

Year 4 Headmistress’ BBQ

On Tuesday Mrs Shayler hosted the Year 4’s at a BBQ in the Pavilion. Once all the food and drink was out of the way much fun was had with party games; Mrs James, Mrs Shayler and Mrs Hazell educated the children in the ways of ‘Oops Up Side Your Head’ and Mr Noble showed off some of his dad-dancing moves!

Musicians at Glastonbury Care Home On Tuesday this week we took a group of our budding musicians for one of our regular visits to the Glastonbury Care Home to cheer the residents in the upstairs and downstairs lounge.

Thanks to Mrs Sturges and our team of performers, all of whom did a really great job; both former Head Girl and Head Boy: Lily Della Valle and Tom Maddock, Tara Landry, Sophie Harbridge, Zara Harrison, Alex Cox, Nell Asquith, Emily Bradshaw and Wyatt Walsh.

Many thanks to Janet and her team at the care home for multiple cups of tea and homemade cakes.

Tea and Music On Monday we experimented with a new Tea and Music format; a longer concert plus interval for refreshments and a wider variety of performers. We had pupils from Year 2 to Year 8, from debuts to seasoned performers. Boarding Life Hollies girls enjoying their sunny trip up Glastonbury Tor on Sunday.

It was celebration time again on Tuesday at Berewall when Rachel turned 11. Happy birthday from all of us!

‘Summer’ arrived this week in Chestnut and the boys decided to wash their own clothes in the puddles in front of house. Once the boys had stopped being boys they came inside to help Timur celebrate his birthday and the whole house filled up on pizza, cake and ice cream!

Wimbledon’t! On Sunday Champion hosted its own doubles tennis tournament, with a twist. Teams were picked at random, red size courts and red balls were used and to top it all off tiny rackets. Everyone had a ball, some took it awfully seriously scouting out the

opposition between matches, and unusual techniques were discovered! Well done to the winners, Greg and Fynn and a big shout out to Calvin who won the sportsmanship award for being honest and true throughout!

Below, fun in the sun at Edgarley Manor!

On Wednesday we welcomed back some of our previous Hollies girls who paid us a visit from the Senior School. It was great to catch up as a House and the girls shared stories over evening treats of sausages and burgers.

Boarding Life

On May Day, once the stalls had been relieved of all the sugar, Champion boys and families retired to house fill up on charred meat, which was followed by an adults v boys basketball game. Despite big talk by the boys and the adults still trying to digest the ‘one last

burger’, the adults used the combined secret weapons of most of them being about a foot taller than the boys, and Mr Fry (who it turns out is really rather good!) to record a resounding victory! Better luck next time boys!

The U13 girls’ cricket team travelled to Lord's on Monday to try and win the Lady Taverners National Indoor Cricket competition. After a reasonable drive to London, the girls tucked into dinner and had a good night's rest ahead of the big day.

The wet walk to the ground on Tuesday didn't dampen the girls’ spirits and their excitement started to build as they walked past the nursery end and caught glimpses of the main pitch.

After a good warm up, we played our first game against Warden Park School from Sussex. The pitches took some getting used to but the girls managed to take all 8 wickets for 52 runs, Rebecca Stowell being the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for 3 runs. Super batting from Harriet Dimdore-Miles and Georgia Dolan saw the girls home comfortably to 82 runs from our 8 overs.

A break followed with girls being given a tour of Lords and meeting Mike Gatting, who enjoyed chatting away to Philippa and being reminded by Mr Beal that he had bowled him out for Somerset!

After lunch, the team faced Packwood Haugh from Shropshire. Packwood had played two, won two and had scored over 100 runs in both of their games, so the girls knew they had to up their game. Millfield bowled first. Ellen Jones took two wickets from the first two balls and the pressure was on. A superb catch from Jess Hazell and great fielding and bowling from the team saw Packwood collapse to 28 all out. Another good batting performance saw Millfield reach 100 off their 8 overs and sent confidence soaring ahead of their final two games.

A game against St Ivo’s from Huntingdonshire followed, with a target of 70 being set for the girls. A strong batting performance from the girls, with a couple of 6s from Georgia and a reverse sweep off the last ball from Harri, saw the girls comfortably to 94 runs.

A win from the last game against Macmillan Academy, Yorkshire, meant the girls would be National champions. Again Millfield bowled first and the innings was over in less than 3 overs, with India-Rose Owen, Harri and Ellen taking the wickets. A target of 20 was set and India and Harri made light work of the chase.

Out of 900 schools, Millfield Prep were crowned National Champions! An amazing achievement from the girls! Their dedication to the cause has been superb throughout each round and they really are a special team. Thanks must go to Mrs Morgan-Hughes for all her driving and support on the day.

ATHLETICS The first round of the English Schools Cup took place on Wednesday. The terrible summer weather meant that the cricket (congratulations to the girls by the way!) and rounders matches were cancelled but our athletes are made of much tougher stuff! It is a team format and all of the boys and girls pulled together to generate a magnificent team score. Both teams comfortably won their respective competitions, full results are on esaa.net. Huge thanks to the staff and parents who survived the showers and enabled our athletes to have a great day. Roll on round two!

GOLF

Freddie Turnell, Jaime Fernandez-Chavarri, Sam Pepler and Morgan Bibiloni Cohen headed to Wellington College to play in the inaugural Wellington College Salver. The event attracted teams playing in pairs from 26 schools across the UK and the tournament was held on the best school golf course in the country. It was the hottest day of the year so far and the pupils were relieved that the format was play 9 holes, have lunch, then go out and play the second 9 holes.

On the front 9 Freddie and Jaime played very well to be up with the leading pack of teams after both playing 6 over gross. Sam and Morgan were also high up the leaderboard with Morgan finishing 9 over and Sam 12 over. Along with the team competition there was individual honours to play for in the different age groups so all the boys were happy at half way and all thought the course was amazing but very tough. As the boys started to come on from the final 9 holes it was clear that the team title was between four schools and although Freddie and Jamie played well, a couple of bad holes on the last two meant they finished in 4th place. Sam and Morgan continued to play well and secured a solid 8th place finish.

The individual honours then were announced with Freddie securing the gross U12 title and also finishing fourth overall in the gross competition. Sam finished tie 1st in the Under 12’s nett competition but unfortunately lost on countback to finish in 3rd place. It was a very successful event at a great golf course. The golfers now move onto the final regional qualifier at Woodbury before IAPS on 10 June.

South Tri Series – Round 3

The third and final competition of the South Tri Series was at Wellington College last month. Millfield had yet another great competition with some very strong performances.

In the U13 Boys’ Patrick Salisbury came an impressive 4th.

In the U13 Girls’ Millfield dominated the competition with Heidi Denyer coming 5th, Ruby Smith 4th and Charlotte Taylor 1st.

In the U15 Girls, Sophie Mabbs competed extremely well and came 1st against tough competition.

Series Champions

Charlotte Taylor unsurprisingly won the series trophy for U13 Girls’ after winning every single round of the series.

Calvin Fry won the series trophy for the U13 Boys. A fantastic effort after only learning to shoot earlier in the year!

Heidi Denyer came 3rd in the series in the U13 Girls and Sophie Mabbs 2nd in the U15 Girls.

Well done to everyone who took part, we are looking forward to competing in the series next year.

Reception’s Assembly and Pirate School

Pre-School After the excitement of last weeks bug hunt at Forest School the children made edible fruit and vegetable bugs. They remembered the different creatures we found and decided which fruit or vegetable they could use to make them. Using grapes, cherry tomatoes, bananas, blueberries, celery, peppers, cucumber, raisins, carrots and pears they made their creations. We joined pieces together with cream cheese. Our bugs looked amazing and the children were very proud, however the best part was eating them!

Year 2 Nest Watch

Year 2 have been fascinated to watch the blue tit building her nest on the video link in the classroom. There are six eggs in the nest at the moment and the female has begun to sit. The male bird has been very dutiful and comes in and out with tasty morsels such as caterpillars and insects. Hopefully we will see them hatch before half term.

We also received a kind letter from the RSPB, thanking us for our donation of £243.00 which the children raised at the Lions Charity Swim.

Reception had great fun acting out Little Red Riding Hood for our Parent Assembly last week.

This week we have been at Pirate School. The children have made their own treasure maps, completed pirate paths books, walked the plank and had a day being pirates in the forest!

Dear Zoo!

This week the Minis got messy as we all had a great time

exploring different activities based around the story book ‘Dear

Zoo!’ There were spaghetti snakes to squidge and play with,

animal masks to decorate, frogs in water, shaving foam with toy

zebras and lots more…. There were lots of smiles and fun being

had by everyone!

We shared a yummy snack before heading

out to the playground for some time in the

sandpit and the sunshine!

See you next week for Mini Sports Day!
