To celebrate our sponsorship of Lauren Child at The Bath Children’s Literature Fesitval, we ran a competition for our pupils to design and illustrate a book cover. We are pleased to be part of this prestigious literary festival which takes place in Bath from 26 September to 5 October 2014.
Millfield Prep is supporting author Lauren Child, famous writer of the Ruby Redfort, Clarice Bean and Charlie and Lola titles. Her event takes place on Saturday 27 September at 11.45am in the Guildhall, Bath.

On Friday 3 October from approximately 12 noon, Marcus and his team will be stopping off at Millfield Prep during their sponsored bike ride in aid of the Somerset CCC Pavilion Appeal.
Pupils will have the opportunity to bowl to Marcus for 50p per ball.
Please bring £2 (boarders can use pocket money) to take part. We look forward to a fun session with Marcus and the bike ride crew!

Harvest Appeal Thank you for supporting our Harvest Service last Friday. We were delighted that the retiring
collection raised £174.80. Click the icon above for photos.
For our Harvest Appeal this year we will be collecting money for the Christian Aid Global Gardeners Scheme. Christian Aid is trying to promote family gardening throughout the world whereby people, especially in third world situations, learn to grow food from their own land to become self-sufficient with a variety of vegetables and fruits suitable to their climate.
We will be raising money to support this venture, providing equipment from greenhouses and forks to seeds and simple irrigation tools. Again this year we are asking pupils to sow a sum of money to try and grow it into a larger sum. Previously, pupils have organised shoe shines, quiz nights, cake sales, guess the number of sweets in a jar, and most appropriately, gardening. The list is endless! The appeal is open now but an especially good time to organise something could be over half term. Please can pupils bring in any monies raised to group tutors. First Tea and Music Concert On Monday this week the pupils enjoyed the first of this year’s Tea and Music concerts. Parents, staff and pupils were treated to a range of performances, including many debut performances from our younger pupils - some of whom had only had three lessons.
Several of the performers on the day will go on to perform in the Informal Concert on Friday 10 October at 6.30pm. Congratulations to all of our musicians. Thank you to parents and staff for your support and to the catering staff for preparing a lovely spread of tea and cakes which made a celebratory and enjoyable end to the evening.

Year 8 Geography Trip to Lulworth Cove Year 8 had a fantastic geographical day out at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. The sun shone, the views were magnificent and we did lots of field sketches of coastal formations. We learnt about sedimentary rocks as well as the impact tourism is having on this World Heritage Site. The walk in the afternoon along the south west coast path proved quite a challenge to some children, but we all made it in the end! More photos via the icon:

Music - Have a Go!
“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.”
We are about to run some taster demo sessions in the music department during class lessons on brass, violin and harp. This is because, in line with James Rhodes’ ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ campaign, we would like to add our own voice to the move towards a complete musical education for your child or children.
Active engagement with instrumental music-making has been proven to have an astonishing ability to physically change the brain. It has been shown to raise IQ, improve confidence, enhance reading ability, numeracy, creativity, fine motor co-ordination,
concentration, self-confidence, emotional intelligence, social skills, team work, self-discipline, and provide happiness and relaxation. You can widen your children’s musical involvement in these possibilities by the gift of music lessons.
Your child can ‘Learn with a Friend’ or have an individual lesson. Trial lessons are free. The next five lessons children can have a taster set and end after five, or hopefully, continue their progress in regular weekly lessons.
We are also running increasing numbers of beginner ensembles and creating easy parts for our larger ensembles to open up group opportunities for new instrumentalists to play and perform together.

Kit Car Race Day This weekend members of the Year 8 Kit Car Club are racing the car they built at Castle Coombe race track in Bristol. Pupils spent last year assembling the car and have been testing and undertaking race training during the first few weeks of term.
The race is a 3 hour endurance race where teams try to complete as many laps as possible. The car will come in for pit stops, where pupils will carry out safety checks, before sending another member of the team back out to race. The car is battery powered and can travel up to 20mph. It promises to be a great day with lots of skills learnt, which will prepare them for the next race in the summer of 2015. Find out next week how we get on!
As well as the Year 8 Kit Car we also have a club for Years 5 and 6 running on a Tuesday night 4.00-5.00pm. If you are interested in joining please ask Mr French for more details.

EAL Pupil of the Week As September comes to a close, the EAL department is preparing itself for its trip to @Bristol Science Museum in a couple of weeks. There is one final announcement from Mrs Dumontroty, Mrs Trevis and Mr Seal before October graces us with its presence and that is the Pupil of the Week award. After throwing around a couple of names of likely candidates, we came to the conclusion that Mariia K, aka Masha, had earned the coveted award because of her great work ethic and constant wish to do the best that she can. Chestnut’s Caricatures
Our friend Wayne visited Chestnut this week and drew caricatures of the boys and the staff.
They have been framed and have made a hilarious display on the stairs.
‘Thank You’ from George George F, along with his mum and dad, have been overwhelmed with the vast number of messages of support from so many parents and friends at Millfield Prep. They would like to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to you all. The messages have been particularly comforting through this trying time.

The British Tennis Leaderboards are a ranking method for players at U9 to
U18 age group for each county in the UK, who compete in a series of
competitions over a specific period of time. The winners are awarded by
the LTA twice a year for the top boy and girl from each county in each age
group in the winter or summer season.
For the 2014 Summer County Tour competition two of our Boys Matthew
W (Somerset) and Gregg C (South Wales), were awarded Number 1 titles
for U12 Boys. In recognition of their achievements the boys each received
medals and Babolat towels.
In addition, Gregg and Dan E (an ex-Prep pupil) won the U14 Boys
Carmarthenshire County Closed.

English Schools South West Champions
Millfield Prep swimmers put on a fantastic show yesterday at the English Schools’ relay competition with 100% personal best times and winning all four relays in great style. Their skills and techniques were outstanding. Well done to the Boys B Team who also placed in the top three.
Congratulations to Alice G for setting a new school record on the lead-off of the freestyle relay with a sizzling time of 27.58 seconds.
The teams now wait to see if they have qualified for the Finals at The London Aquatic Olympic pool on Saturday 22 November.

Here are the Millfield Prep sailors at the Bart's Bash sailing event at Sutton Bingham. Pictured with Mr Maxwell are Ollie D, Raffi M and Sam W. The boys all got medals, including Mr Maxwell! Raffi was the first Tera home and Sam brought in his Feva second in that class.

Europe Win Ryder Cup!
Eight of the Millfield Prep golfers played a mini Ryder Cup on Wednesday afternoon. Team Europe consisted of Charlie G, Jack H, Max F and Lowen S who took on the slightly-reluctant-to-have-to-be-the-American-team of Morgan B C, Sky P, Barney F and Freddie T.
In the singles Charlie defeated Morgan and Sky levelled it up for USA by beating Jack. Max secured an early lead from the singles for Team Europe by beating his brother Barney in a fiercely contested match.
The six golfers were then joined by the juniors Freddie and Lowen to make two foursome games. Both were very close matches with Freddie and Morgan winning 2/1 over Charlie and Lowen to level the match 2-2. The deciding match saw Max and Jack secure the win for Team Europe by defeating Sky and Barney 2/1.
Hopefully we will see a similar result in the match at Gleneagles this weekend! Mr Vibert

Millfield’s 80th Anniversary Dinner and Ball
The School and Foundation are delighted by the phenomenal response to Millfield’s 80th Anniversary Dinner and Ball, taking place next year on Friday 8 May at Grosvenor House in London. Ticket sales are flying at a rate almost rivalling that of the 2015 Rugby World Cup!
Thank you to those who have committed to coming - we look forward to receiving final bookings over the coming weeks. The Grosvenor’s Great Room is the biggest ballroom in London and the event should be a wonderful occasion for all.

Millfield welcomes Somerset CCC Captain and ex-England international cricketer, Marcus Trescothick. Hailed as one of the most outstanding batsmen of the modern cricket era, Marcus will give an insight into his international career, his captaincy of Somerset CCC for the past four years, and the
stress-related condition which lead to his international retirement.
Tickets for the event cost £20 per person and include a buffet and tea and coffee throughout the evening. A cash bar will also be available. The talk will begin at 7pm, followed by an auction and raffle with the opportunity to bid for a number of fantastic and rare sporting items.
This event is being hosted as part of the school’s fundraising efforts for the forthcoming cricket and hockey tour to India in December, and for charity partners Help for Heroes.

Pre-School’s Little O’s!
Pre-School spent a lovely morning threading Cheerios onto strawberry laces. These were turned into bracelets or necklaces. The children developed their fine motor skills and guessed how many Cheerios they would need, counted them and ate them!
Reception Music Makers
During Music with Mrs Borenstein the children have been learning a song to sing at our Harvest Festival. They all have percussion instruments and are playing them beautifully.
Autumn Leaves
Walking in the autumn leaves gave the Year 1 children the opportunity to think of wonderful descriptive words for their poetry. Here are some of the lines that were inspired by the experience.
‘Fun to crunch and throw’
‘I can toss them in the air’
‘They are crumbly and crunchy too’
‘I tumbled them up’
‘They are scrunchy’
‘They swoosh and whoosh’
‘Gold and brown’

This Week... Summer has continued to extend into autumn and we have all been enjoying the lovely weather, so much so that yesterday’s rain came as a real shock! I have been watching the children with interest this week in terms of their ability to persevere and sustain their efforts. It is vital that the curriculum is challenging and that the children do not find everything easy – without striving for something, the achievement is never as satisfying. I have been pleased to see that we do challenge the children here at the Pre-Prep – whether that be a three year-old putting his own socks on after swimming, or a Year 2 pupil tackling a tricky problem in maths. The enhanced curriculum we offer lends itself to opportunities to stretch, engage and test in order to develop the resilience that we know children will need as they grow up in the modern world. What a messy time the Minis had painting!
There was lots of fantastic pieces of art created as the Minis got to work! Painting at the easel, white hand prints with glitter, car wheels, rollers and even potato printing was on offer for the Mini artists. Everyone (including parents) got very messy with the colourful paints however the mess outweighed the FUN!!
