Beingmindfulthatseveralofourworksofficeswereclosed,orhomeworkingallowed/recommended,duetothehorriblynamed“BeastfromtheEast”doingitsworstIwonderedhowtheenergysupplysectorwasperforming.NaturallyIlookattheGBNationalGridWatchandwassurprisedtoseethatweweredoingOKallbeitwithlotsofenergycomingacrosstheinterconnects.
I’vedownloadedsomescreenshotsinthetitbitssectionforyourinterest.ThetotalGBdemandwas43.88GW,withcoalhavingoneofitsmoreproductivedayssupplying23.82%onlysurpassedbyCCGTat25.37%whichwastheonlysectornotrunningatfullcapacity.Windat22.56%andnuclearat14.52%weretheothermaincontributorswiththeEuropeaninterconnectscontributing6.73%(yes,theFrenchandDutchlinesrunningatnearfullcapacity).ThegridwatchsitealsoshowsthedemandinFrancenamely83.06GW,nearlydoubletheGBdemand,with63.03%fromnuclearand18.64%fromhydro.Ofinterestwastheimportof4.22GWfromGermanyand2.25GWfromSpainwithexportsof3.18GWtoItaly,1.64toSwitzerlandandthe2.00GWtoUK,i.e.importsof6.47GWexportsof6.82GW.ItwouldappearasthoughtheEuropeaninterconnectspushingelectricityaroundthecontinentareworkingprettyefficiently.

ShortCVIleftuniversityinSeptember2013andbeganworkingatWoodaweeklaterasamaterialsandstructuralintegrityconsultant.IgraduatedfromTheUniversityofManchesterwithaBSC(Hons)inmaterialsscienceandengineering(2012) aswell as anMSc innuclear science (2013). I provide independent technical and safety assessments forvarious customerson safety casedocumentation through the IndependentNuclearAssuranceunitofWood.Theassessmentsare inthe formofreportsadvisingthecustomeronmaterialsandstructural integrityrelated issueswithin thecontextofnuclearsafety,usingknowledgeofmaterials scienceandnuclearplant technology. Ihaveconductedassessmentsforavarietyofareasonthenuclearplant,focusingoncorematerialsbehaviourtakingintoconsiderationirradiationeffects,corrosion°radation,manufacturingrouteandmicrostructuraleffects.IhavealsohadastintinthelabsatWoodwhereIwasresponsiblefortestingZirconiumalloysinreactorandmoresevereconditions in static autoclaves and SEM analysis of the specimens. Outside of technical roles, I am the businessdevelopment manager for the department which is focused on winning new work, improving extant customerrelationshipsandbusinessstrategy.
MaterialsInterestsMy main interests are core materials used in nuclear especially performance under irradiation; uranium fuel,zirconium,stainlesssteels,nickelbasedalloysandgraphite.Ialsohaveinterestsinmaterialsusedinmotorracingandaeroapplicationswhicharelinkedtomyhobbiesasyouwillsee.IamaProfessionalGraduatememberofIOM3andIhaverecentlysubmittedmyapplicationforMIMMMwithCEng.IamanactivememberofIOM3;IrepresentboththeYoungMembers’CommitteeandnuclearontheboardoftheEMGandamtheSTEMlead.IamalsotheVice-PresidentoftheManchesterMetallurgicalSocietywhichismylocalsociety.
OutsideInterestsIhaverecentlybecomeafatherandIamreallyenjoyingit.Spendingtimewithmywifeanddaughterismymainoutsideinterest;whetheritisatriptothebeachorjuststayingin,Iloveit!IdokeepactiveinmydaytodaylifeandIamakeenboxerandamamemberofmylocalgo-kartingtrack.IamaFormula1,MotoGPandfootballfanaticandIfollowthesportsclosely.Iamdrawntospeedtherefore,adoresupercars/bikesandsupersonicfighterjetsandIhaveattendedafewracesandair/motorshowsovertheyears.Iampassionateaboutallwildlife,particularlysavingendangeredspecieswithbigcatsmyfavourite.Ienjoysocialisingwithfriendsandcolleagues,watchingcomedyfilms&showsandonlinegaming.Lastly,IamaStarWarssuperfan!

OrganisationProfileTMS
TheMinerals,Metals&MaterialsSociety(TMS)isaprofessionalsocietythatconnectsminerals,metals,andmaterialsscientistsandengineerswhoworkinindustry,academia,andgovernmentpositionsaroundtheworld.TMScurrentlysupportsnearly13,000professionalandstudentmembersonsixcontinents.TMShas2mainfunctionsa)professionallicensingofengineersandtheaccreditationofuniversityprogramsinmetallurgical,materials,andsimilarlynamedengineeringprograms;andb)networking,publication,andprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesbyconveninginternationalconferences,publishingbooksandjournals,administeringawards,conductingshortcoursesandtraining.ThehistoryofTMSdatesbackto1871,theyearthatitsparentorganization,TheAmericanInstituteofMiningEngineers(nowtheAmericanInstituteofMining,Metallurgical,andPetroleumEngineers—AIME),becameoneofthefirstnationalengineeringsocietiesintheUnitedStates.AIMEiscurrentlyoneoffiveEngineeringFounderSocietiesthatformtheUnitedEngineeringFoundationintheUnitedStates.In1957,AIMEestablishedTheMetallurgicalSocietyofAIME,alongwiththeSocietyofMiningEngineersofAIMEandtheSocietyofPetroleumEngineersofAIME,assemiautonomoussocietiesaddressingparticulartechnicalinterestsandactivitiesofitsmembers.TheIron&SteelSocietywasaddedtothegroupin1974.TMSandtheothersocietiesseparatelyincorporatedin1984,buttodaymaintainarelationshipwithAIMEandeachotherasfourmembersocietiesofafederation.Toreflectthebroadeningofitstechnicalscope,TheMetallurgicalSocietychangeditsnametoTheMinerals,Metals&MaterialsSocietyin1989andthenameofitsmemberjournalfromJournalofMetalstoJOM.Overtheyears,TMShasgrownandexpanded,engagingininitiativestofurtherpromotetheminerals,metals,andmaterialsprofessions.Inthe1980s,anexhibitionwasaddedtotheTMSAnnualMeeting.Inthe1990s,theTMSFoundationwasestablishedtosupportthedevelopmentofstudentsandyoungprofessionals.Inthefirstdecadeofthe2000s,TMSpartneredwithseveralothermaterialssocietiestocreatethejointMaterialAdvantagestudentprogramandtheMaterialsScience&Technology(MS&T)conferenceseries.IOM3memberscanbecomeAffiliatemembersoftheTMSforanannualfeeof£20,givingaccesstoTMSonlineresourcesandinformation.TMSmembersmaybecomejointmembersoftheBrazilianMetallurgical,MaterialsandMiningAssociation(ABM),withaparticularfocusontheexchangeoftechnicalandscientificknowledgeandthepermanentpursuitofimprovementofthoseprofessionalsinvolvedinmetalsandmaterialsdevelopment,ForamoreinformationonTMSpleaserefertohttp://www.tms.org/portal/FormoreinformationaboutTMSAffiliatemembershipcontactmembership@iom3.org

Germanyconsidersfreepublictransportforcleanair
Germanyisconsideringmakingallpublictransportfreeincitiessufferingfromairpollution.That’saccordingtoaletterreportedlyseenbyReuters,whichwassentbyGermanEnvironmentMinisterBarbaraHendricks,AgricultureMinisterChristianSchmidtandChancelleryChiefPeterAltmaiertotheEuropeanCommission.
TheproposalscomeinresponsetorecentpromisesfromtheEUvowingtocrackdownonillegallevelsofnitrogenoxideemissionsandparticulatematteracrossthecontinent.Germanyisamongthenationsfacinglegalactionbecauseofitspoorairqualityindenselypopulatedareasandcouldbepenalisedasaresult.Theletterdiscussesintroducinglowemissionzones,makingpublictransportfree,incentivisingelectricvehicles(EVs)andretrofittingexistingcarswhereeconomicallyfeasible.
Theministerssuggestedtestingthesemeasuresinfivecities,namelyBonn,Essen,Herrenberg,ReutlingenandMannheim.Successfultechniquestocutharmfulsmogwillthenbedeployedinothercitiesaffectedbypollution.
Renaultopensdedicatedelectricvehiclestore
Renaulthasopeneditsfirstdedicatedelectricvehicle(EV)“concept”storeinStockholm,Sweden,withvisitorsabletotestdriveEVsonsite.Stockholmwaschosenforthefirststoreofitskindbecauseof“thefastelectricvehiclemarketexpansioninSwedenandthestrongwillingnessofSwedishGovernmenttopromotethistechnology.”
Expressdelivery!Coulddroneshelpcutemissions?
Theuseofdronestodelivercommercialpackagescouldhelpsaveenergyandemissions.ResearchersattheLawrenceLivermoreNationalLaboratory(LLNL),CarnegieMellonUniversity,SRIInternationalandtheUniversityofColoradoatBoulderconductedtestswithtwocommercialdronesanddevelopedanestimateoftheenergyneededtodeliverapackageinvariousscenarios.
Theyfoundwithinafour-kilometrerangeofcurrentbattery-drivendeliverydrones,theairbornedevicesconsumedlessenergyperpackageandperkilometrethantrucksforlightdeliveriesof0.5kg.Theresearchsuggestscertainitemscanbedeliveredfasterwithlessenvironmentalimpactsthantrucks–thetransportsectoraccountsforaroundafifthofglobalgreenhousegasemissions.Itaddsthatwhiledronescan’tdisplaceroaddeliveries,especiallyforbiggeritemscurrently,largerdronescanbemademoreefficientthantrucksandvans.Theresearchersrecommendregulatorsandbusinesseslookingtogetanenvironmentalbenefitfromdronestoconsiderthesystem-wideimpactsandfocustheireffortsonsmallpackagesandleavelargeronesfortrucksandvansfornow.

Canpaper-basedbatteriesstoptearableeco-damage?
Newpaper-basedbatteriescouldprovideasustainablealternativetotraditionalpower-packs.Madefrompaper,carbonandnon-toxicmetals,Fuelium’sbatteriesaresuitedforuseinrelativelysmall-scale,water-basedapplications,suchasblooddiagnosticsorteststodetectdiseaseswithtissuesamples.Thisequipmentgenerallyrequiressingle-useelectronicdevices,whichcanbedisposedofwithoutrecyclingifpaper-basedbatteriesareused.Standardsingle-usediagnostictestsarethrownoutafterutilisingunder1%oftheirbatteries’charge.Fueliumsaysitsbatteriesonlygeneratetheamountofenergyneededforeachapplicationanddonotcontainheavymetalsorproveharmfultohealth.
GEAnnouncesHaliade-X,theWorld'sMostPowerfulOffshoreWindTurbine
OnMarch1,2018GERenewableEnergyunveileditsplantodevelopthelargest,mostpowerfuloffshorewindturbine:theHaliade-X.Featuringa12MWdirectdrivegeneratorandanindustryleadinggrosscapacityfactorof63%,theHaliade-Xwillproduce45%moreenergythananyotheroffshoreturbineavailabletoday.Towering260metersovertheseatheHaliade-Xcarriesa220-meterrotor.DesignedandmanufacturedbyLMWindPower,the107-meter-longbladeswillbethelongestoffshorebladestodateandwillbelongerthanthesizeofasoccerfield.OneHaliade-X12MWturbinewillgenerateupto67GWhannually,enoughcleanpowerforupto16,000householdsperturbine,andupto1millionEuropeanhouseholdsina750MWwindfarmconfiguration.

AnewhybridexpeditionshiphasbeenlaunchedinNorway.Cruise,ferryandcargooperatorHurtigrutensaystheMSRoaldAmundsen,whichenteredthewaterattheKlevenYardinUlsteinvik,isthefirstgreenshipofitskindintheworld.Ituseslargebatterypacks,ahybridengine,advancedhullconstructionandenergyefficienton-boardtechnologiestoreducefuelconsumptionandcarbondioxideemissionsbyafifth,comparedtoatraditionallypoweredvessel.ItisthefirstoftwolowcarbonshipsHurtigrutenplanstoaddtoitsfleetoverthenextfewyears–thenearidenticalsistershipMSFridtjofNanseniscurrentlybeingbuilt.Botharesettoexploresomeofthemostremoteplacesonearth,includingAntarcticaandtheArctic.
