From The Principal

Dear Parents

At Rowville Primary School we place an important emphasis on physical activity. Today students in Years 3 to 6 participated in an athletics day at Knox Athletics Park. I acknowledge our PE teachers, Sue Macdonald and Liz Altmeppen for their organisation of the day. I also thank the many parents and staff who helped the event run so smoothly.

It is important that we build strong physical activity programs in our schools. Our grandparents often told stories of themselves or their parents walking or bike riding miles to school every day, chopping wood, carrying groceries, washing the clothes, carrying water, digging the garden, playing sport and walking home afterwards, in the rain or heat.

The world has changed, we now have cars or buses, washing machines and gas or electric stoves. Adults usually drive children where they want to go. However our bodies were designed for physical activity and without enough exercise it starts to slow down, clog up and become unhealthy.

In addition to House Athletics, today twenty students from our school competed in the Knox Division Swimming Championships at Aquanation Ringwood. We congratulate the 9-10 Boys’ freestyle relay team who came first in their event. We will share further results in next weeks newsletter.

At our Monday morning assembly, our students wished our Assistant Principal, Miss Dempster all the very best for her forthcoming nuptials. We wish her all the very best for Friday and look forward to her return in the last week of this term.

A reminder that the school is closed on Monday 12th March for the Labour Day Public holiday.

VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE

The 2018 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open. The aim of the Challenge is to promote a love of reading. It is not a competition, but a challenge to each student to read, and to read more widely.

Parental consent forms are no longer required for children to participate in the Challenge therefore this year every student at Rowville Primary School will be registered to participate in the Reading Challenge. However, we do need parents to consent to the names of students who complete the challenge to be published in the online Premiers’ Reading Challenge Honour Roll. Consent can be given via Compass events and are due by Thursday 29th March, 2018.

The students in Foundation, Years 1 and 2 will be sharing 30 books with their classroom teachers. Students in Years 3 to 6 are challenged to read 15 books. At least 10 must be from the booklist and 5 can be free choice. Remember to record the title and author of any books you have read over the holidays or any books that you have already finished reading this year.

If you would like further details on the Reading Challenge go to www.education.vic.gov.au/prc or come and see us. All enquiries are welcome.

SCHOLASTIC BOOKCLUB

Welcome back to Scholastic Book Club for another year! There are eight Scholastic Book Clubs per year (two per term). Every dollar spent entitles the school to earn “Scholastic Rewards” which are then redeemed to obtain books and resources for the school.

The 30 page Brochure covers all age groups. As a general guide the brochure includes recommendations as follows: Wombat – Foundation; Lucky – Year 1 and Year 2; Arrow – Year 3 and Year 4; Star – Year 5 and Year 6.

The Book Club brochures have been distributed this week. If you wish to make a purchase by cash or cheque please fill in the order form and place it in an envelope with your name, grade and correct money.
