From The Principal… Dear Parents/Carers

This week every State school in Victoria celebrates Education Week. Going to school to learn is a basic right for all children and it is something that we take for granted, however, 120 million children in the world do not go to school because they either live in a country where there is no school or it is too unsafe to go to school. We can celebrate that not only do we have a school for the children in our community, but also that it is a truly vibrant place where everyone comes to learn.

The highlight of Education Week 2017 at Rowville Primary School will be ‘Twilight School’. It is hard to imagine that by altering the school day we can engender so much excitement amongst our students! I look forward to meeting families on the night.

Last Friday night seven of our Year Five students represented our school at the DanceStars Victoria Year five competition in Monbulk. This was a huge achievement, as many of them had never before danced on stage. The competition required the students to: create their own choreography; choose and organise their own music and costumes. Ayla and Disha performed solos. Lacey, Akera, Ayla and Disha performed duos. Jessica, Rodrigo and Lachie performed as a group and received a special mention and encouragement award. The next performance for this group is the DanceFair competition at Fairhills High School on 2nd June. We congratulate our students on their efforts and we thank Miss Olson for supporting our students on the night.

We often think of dance as a recreational activity that has little to do with academic learning, however, dance teaches children important movement patterns along with musical patterns. The ability to recognise, identify and create patterns not only supports mathematical learning, it also contributes to broader social

development. By understanding patterns, children are able to make predictions about what should come next. Nearly every desirable occupation requires pattern recognition skills. Doctors often read patient histories and charts to make diagnosis and prescribe treatments, attorneys study case histories before they present their case, analysts study data to predict future price movements and salespeople use patterns to sell products.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

Today, Wednesday 24th May is National Simultaneous Storytime. National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual literary event that is celebrated all over Australia in libraries, classrooms and bookstores as part of Library and Information Week. Libraries and schools around Australia read the same book at the same time. The event has been growing steadily for the last seventeen years. In 2016 over 520,000 children at over 3,500 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, reading the book I Got This Hat, by Jol Temple. The purpose of National Simultaneous Storytime is to promote the value of reading and literacy with fun books by Australian writers and publishers.

This year our Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students, with our guest reader Mr Jury, enjoyed reading the book The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. We take a look at the real story behind the cow jumping over the moon. It took courage and perseverance to be able to do it and lots of encouragement from her friends!

Hey diddle diddle

You all know the riddle

A cow jumps over the moon...

But the moon is very high in the sky. How many attempts will it take before Cow makes her famous high-flying leap?

Our students thoroughly enjoyed the story and being part of this annual event.
