From The Principal… Dear Parents/Carers

Our students have made us proud through their participation in a range of extra-curricular events.

On the 5th May, ten year six students represented our school at Monbulk College for the Dance Stars Victoria competition. Congratulations to all students who participated:

Jessica and Stella in the solo; Tarlyia, Teagan, Lucy and Kaitlin in the Duo section; Kellee, Charlize, Lucy, Indigo, Ebony and Stella in the groups section.

All the girls were excellent representatives of Rowville Primary School and performed fabulous routines that were choreographed by themselves in their own time. We were lucky enough to receive three placings in the competition.

Jessica came 3rd in the solo.

Kellee, Charlize and Lucy came 3rd in the group section.

Lucy and Kaitlin came 1st in the duo section and will now progress through to the finals to be held on Friday 2nd June.

The year five Dance Stars competition will be held this Friday night in Monbulk. Good luck to all those students who will be participating.

Our Rowville Primary Girls ‘Go for Gold’ aerobics team headed down to Geelong to compete in the Victorian State Schoolaerobics Preliminary. They performed brilliantly and lit up the stage, coming first out of twenty teams!

They now have their sights set on the State Grand Final on Saturday 3rd June.

A huge congratulation to Alex, Sophie, Tarlyia, Kellee, Ming, Kaitlin, Lucy and Tyler and best of luck at State finals.

Both these success stories demonstrate our school values of responsibility and perseverance. There have been countless hours of practice before and after school, including countless hours of training sessions at home and at school. Participation in these extra-curricular activities is made possible through the dedication of our teachers who support students outside of school hours and at practice sessions.

National Volunteers Week (NVW) was last week. This is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. With the theme Give Happy, Live Happy, introduced in 2015, we continue in 2017 to celebrate and explore the research that shows volunteers live happier and healthier lives.

We have many volunteers in our school including classroom helpers, excursion, Beyond Boundaries and sport helpers, families that attend project days, FORPS event organisers and their team of helpers, Kids Hope, helpers that cover books, helpers in the kitchen, Canteen, School Council and its Sub-committees, BBQs helpers and many other ways community members get involved. Thank you retrospectively (and looking forward) for all that you do to make our school a great place.

A special thank you to Shelby for organising the Mothers Day stall and to our parent helpers Kate, Lisa B, Sara, Katrina, Lorraine, Rania, Phoenix, Lisa M and Tammie for assisting the students to select their special gifts.

From the Acting Assistant Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

On Tuesday Mrs Yon and I visited Parliament House with the Year 5/6 Parliamentarians. We were greeted at the State Parliament by the Honourable Kim Wells MP who gave us a personal tour of Parliament. The Parliament of Victoria is a bicameral legislature (two Houses) with representatives elected to either the Legislative Council (the Upper House)

or the Legislative Assembly (the Lower House). The Assembly has 88 Members and the Council has 40 Members. In assembly on Monday, the Honourable Alan Tudge MP talked about showing respect for the Australian flag and he went on to share the history of the Australian flag. The Union Jack on the top left corner of the Australian flag denotes Australia’s links with Great Britain. Following the Westminster tradition, the party having the support of the majority of Members in the Lower House has the right to form Government. The Government is then answerable to Parliament. This is called ‘responsible government’ because the Government is responsible to Parliament and must present its policies for parliamentary scrutiny.

The Parliamentarians were extremely respectful throughout the tour and even had the

opportunity to debate in the Legislative Assembly Chamber. There was time to debate two

very important issues, the first topic for debate was ‘Being left at home at 10 years of age is

too young’ and ‘Plastic bags should be banned in Australia’. Both topics led to very interesting

debates between the Government led by Oscar and the Opposition led by Ashna. Luckily Arwa

was on hand as the Speaker to ensure that there was order in the house and even had to give the

Honourable Kim Wells MP a warning during proceedings! Thank you to the parent helpers that

volunteered to support on the day.

Last week I set the challenge to students to bring in package free lunches for the week. I was

impressed with a number of students who decided to do their bit for the environment and make a

small change that can have a huge impact. Well done to Mahkayla and Kiara in year 4 for respecting

our school environment and bringing their package free lunch to my office.

Next week will be Education Week and to celebrate at Rowville Primary School we will be hosting our

annual Twilight School Day. It is always an exciting event at Rowville Primary School and we enjoy

having many visitors through our doors to observe the outstanding teaching and learning that takes

place. A reminder that dinner orders and care arrangement forms for Twilight School will need to be

handed in to the office by Friday 19th May.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Liam Jury

Acting Assistant Principal

National Volunteers Week

Last week was National Volunteers Week (8th – 14th May, 2017). It is the largest celebration of volunteers in Australia and was established in 1989. In 2015 the theme of Give Happy, Live Happy was introduced. The research shows that volunteers live happier and healthier lives. I’d like to thank all the volunteers that help in the library throughout the year and especially Emily and Kate who have regularly been in to help with shelving and other library tasks. Your contribution to our school is very much appreciated thank you.

Thank You

I’d like to extend a big thank you to Ros Bartlett for her recent large donation of resources to the school library. Our students are going to enjoy the resources very much .

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge update

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is up and running at Rowville Primary School. Students and teachers are enjoying their reading.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of 8 September 2017. Children from Foundation to Year 2 are reading 30 books with their classroom teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. It is important to note that parental consent forms are no longer required for children to participate in the Challenge; however we do need parental consent for the names of successful students to be published on the online Premiers’ Reading Challenge Honour Roll.

We have decided that for 2017 all students in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 who are already reading 30 books with their classroom teachers will be enrolled to participate. Parents who have not returned the consent form will be marked as “NO” and their child’s name will not be published on the online honour roll.

To read the Premiers’ letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit www.education.vic.gov.au/prc. If anyone has any concerns or would like further clarification please contact us.
