We have noticed lately, that a number of parents are not aware of some of the events happening at school. These newsletters are published fortnightly and the school’s website is updated regularly. Contact with school is very important, so printed in this newsletter is a form for you to update your details; phone, cell phone, email and address. Please fill it out and return it to school thanks. SCOOTERS-Lunch time activities. We have asked all students to have a break from bringing their scooters to school. We are setting up some other activities that they may like to have a go at over the next few weeks at lunch times, these will be centred around digital technologies. We will bring back scooters at a later date. UNIFORM A reminder for all, the school uniform is required to be worn daily. Only black shorts, track pants, leggings or skirts are to be worn with the school tee shirt and polar fleece, not camouflage or pink sweat shirts as I have witnessed being worn during the last week. STUDENT ABSENCES The Education Act requires that children attend school daily unless they have a medical reason or some family event. If you have a child away, you need to contact the school, by email, phone or a written note to explain their absence, beside the legal requirement we also need to know for the safety of all our pupils. Students leave their homes and walk, ride etc to get to school. If a student is absent, it could be because of some unforeseen action or act for example going off to visit some mate, yes it does happen even at primary school ! Therefore, in the near future, all students who are marked absent on the classroom roll each morning for an unknown reason will be contacted via a text to inform their parent/ caregiver. This will be required to be replied to, so that we can track and update our attendance registers. NW RIPPA RUGBY TOURNAMENT This was held last Thursday, we had 5 teams involved playing against teams from Selwyn Park, St Josephs and Ruawai. Our teams were well supported throughout the day by parents and others watching the games. The senior teams played 4 games each and the middle had 3 games, making for some tired legs towards the end of the day. Our year 5& 6 No 1 team won all their games while the year 3&4 No 1 team only had one loss. Thanks to our supporters and Northland Rugby Union for organising the day. Two teams (one year 3&4 and one year 5&6 team) will be going to the finals at Tikipunga next Thursday 4 June. WEEKLY FOCUS We are continuing our focus on ‘Thinking.’ Over the next few weeks we will be learning about open questions. Questions that lead us into finding out information, or questions that make us think about the main idea or reason about what we read and see. BOT A casual vacancy has occurred on the board for two elected parent representatives and the BOT are currently looking at appointing two new members to join them, they are Chris Mason and Helena Williamson There will be an official notice in the Dargaville and District news this week. QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY Remember Monday 1 June school will be closed.

HOCKEY SPORT NORTHLAND

Senior and middle school students will be in-volved in coaching sessions taken by Northland Hockey personnel here at school, these lessons will be held over a 4 week period. The lessons will reintroduce the skill of hockey and some of the strategies of playing the game.

RUAWAI SPORTS CHALLENGE The challenge against Ruawai for the ‘Nellie Yelcich Shield’ is now back on our calendar. This year Ruawai Primary will host our teams on Wednesday 10 June. Ruawai School will be fielding a year 3/4 and year 5/6 netball and 7 aside rugby teams and a mixed soccer team only, due to their limited num-bers, and we will make teams of mixed age groups to match them. Once we have selected the teams, a notice will be sent home with your child. The team will travel by bus to and from Ruawai. The games will start around 1:00pm and the children will return to DPS by 3:00pm.

STUDENT’S WRITING

What lies beyond the fog?

An old crow desperate for food.

A rusty old car that’s been flipped over by

something large.

Broken glass and splinters of steel lying on the

dull gravel road.

Deep trenches dug by the unknown.

I see a wall of bricks with deep claw marks.

A glass eye sitting on a polished desk.

Sharp shadows swaying from side to side.

There lies the Eiffel tower.

FROM THE LIBRARY Our school is entered in the ‘Hells Pizza’ reading challenge. Children that were interested in participating have been given booklets that are kept in the class-room or the library. The challenge in brief is to read 7 books to re-ceive a free ‘333’ kids healthy pizza. There are rules to the challenge which has been explained to children. Each child that wished to participate has received a booklet to fill in each time a book is read then it gets signed off by me. When their booklet is complete I will give them a token that entitles them to receive the free pizza. The chal-lenge will run until the end of term 3. Miss K.
