There has been a real buzz around the classrooms and I have been impressed to see the students back into the swing of school life. We’ve had students completing STEM challenges, working on improving their reading skills, participating in creative writing tasks, back into music lessons and in general striving to achieve their personal best in and out of class. As restrictions continue to ease, we will be able to participate in some of the things we have been missing. Sport, assemblies and inter-school events are some of the things we can start implementing again. A guide for parents outlining all of this, is attached to this newsletter. Student Reports Student Reports will be forwarded home to parents on Friday 3 rd July. Students from Years 1 to 6 are assessed on a five point scale in all Key Learning Areas. The gradings are: limited, basic, sound, high and outstanding. A description of each grading will be on the front of the reports. The majority of students will achieve a ‘sound’ grading. A ‘sound’ grading indicates: The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills. Sound means they are achieving at grade level. Due to the interruption to the start of this year, teachers will be assessing and reporting on the work that was delivered at the beginning of Term 1 and since we have returned to school full time. As such, the reports will be slightly modified. Students in Kindergarten have a different report which indicates their progress in meeting the outcomes of the Kindergarten syllabus. Cross Country Unfortunately, the school cross country as we normally run it, is not possible this year. However, with the restrictions easing, we are able to allow the students to participate in a “fun run” around the school. We have set out a course around our school and aim to let all the students participate in a run at some stage through the day this Friday. Please ensure that all students bring their water bottle and wear appropriate sports uniform or house colours to participate in the run. Kindergarten 2021 We are now starting to take enrolments for Kindergarten class of 2021. Our official Kindergarten Orientation Program will begin in Term 4. If you know of any boy or girl who will be starting at Avoca Beach PS in 2021, please let them know to pop into the office, put their name down and collect an enrolment package. Kiss & Drop Thank you so much to the parents using kiss and drop of an afternoon. Our new system is starting to see the traffic flowing smoother. Displaying the name cards in your window is also helping immensely. If you require an extra name card for another car, please let the ladies in the office know and we will send another one home for you.

Ben Thomas Principal Quote of the Week “Music produces a kind of pleasure that human nature cannot live without.” – Confucius Wellbeing- Resilience Resilience is particularly important for children and young people. The transition from being a child to an adolescent to a young adult occurs over a relatively short period of time. Rapid changes in physical, psychological and social development can present numerous challenges. Children and young people who are more resilient are better able to stay on track with the biological, psychological and social demands of growing up and moving through early childhood into adolescence and beyond. Being resilient is associated with better academic performance and school behaviour and, over the longer term, fewer mental health issues and greater life opportunities (including employment and relationships). Individual resilience (as well as family and community resilience) is something that can be fostered and developed over time. Children and young people need resilience Children and young people need resilience to manage ups and downs, both during and after difficult or challenging situations. Ups and downs can range from everyday challenges like conflict with friends or falling off a bike. They can be emotional experiences such as loss, rejection, disappointment or humiliation. Some children and young people face serious challenges like disability, learning difficulties, family separation, family illness or death, or bullying. Resilience is more than just coping Children and young people with greater levels of resilience are better able to manage stress. If stress is severe or ongoing, it’s a risk factor for mental health issues. When children and young people learn to navigate these stressors, it supports their mental health and wellbeing now and into the future. Resilience has been associated with better academic performance and behaviour and, longer-term, is associated with greater life opportunities (including employment and satisfying relationships). Resilience practice guide Beyond Blue’s Building resilience in children aged 0–12: A practice guide aims to assist practitioners to promote children’s resilience and raise community awareness about it more broadly. https://www.beyondblue.org.au/who-does-it-affect/children/building-resilience-in-children-aged-0-12

National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

Our teachers and Learning Support Team are currently collecting a range of information about how we support students with additional learning needs. This involves a systematic review of learning programs, adjustments and accommodations made to ensure our students have full access to the curriculum. The NCCD occurs in all schools across Australia at this time of year. For further information about the NCCD, please follow the link to their website. https://www.nccd.edu.au/

THE SNACK SHACK

We are pleased to be back working Mon-Fri now. At this stage we are still only accepting ONLINE orders and there

will not be any counter service at lunchtime. We are still unable to offer all our Specials due to Covid 19 restrictions

but have put some extra options on everyday. Our new homemade Cheesymite Scrolls are now available for RECESS.

Lunch will be served normally at 11.25 and RECESS at 2.00. We are unable to offer Crunch & Sip at this stage while

we are adjusting our working routines without volunteers. We have been keeping busy in our quieter days by

providing extra lunch options for the wonderful staff. It’s a big change for everyone to suddenly have the kids going

back to school full time, so order some lunches and let us make it easier for you!

Order online at flexischools.com.au or download the app.
