Nuestras más sinceras felicitaciones a todos los involucrados en la ceremonia de Proclamación de Abanderados, y en especial, por supuesto, a aquellos alumnos que obtuvieron las diferentes distinciones para el año escolar 2013-2014. Este año adicionalmente tuvimos la premiación tanto en Año 13 y en Año 10 con distinciones en varias asignaturas, las mismas que fueron otorgadas a diferentes estudiantes.

We would like to offer our warmest congratulations to all involved in the Proclamation Ceremony for Flag bearers and to those who gained the highest honours for the 2013-2014 school year. Besides this school year we gave extra distinctions to our Year 13 and Year 10 students due to their high records in different subject areas.

AAccttiivviiddaaddeess CCAASS // CCAASS AAccttiivviittiieess

Estaremos visitando el Orfanato de la Fundación Henry Davidson, quienes tienen albergados a 126 niños y adolescentes. Nuestro objetivo es visitarles y llevar algunos víveres y ropa que pueda de alguna manera ayudarles. Es por ello que recurrimos a ustedes para solicitar su colaboración con la donación de ropa, zapatos, cobijas, colchones o colchonetas y comida no perecible. Adicionalmente hemos iniciado la campaña de reciclaje que estará a cargo de nuestros estudiantes de Año 12, quienes recaudarán fondos para con ello ayudar a jóvenes adolescentes padres de familia, de un colegio de Quito.

We will be visiting the Henry Davidson Foundation Orphanage, a shelter of 126 children and teenagers. Our aim is to visit and give the orphans some food and clothing that will be of use for the children and young people there. Thus we will be grateful if you can help us with donating clothes, shoes, blankets, mattresses or blankets and non-perishable food. In addition we have started a recycling campaign with our Year twelve students, who will raise funds to help young parents from a school in Quito.

La recolección de papel, botellas plásticas, cartón, envases tetra pack se realizará todos los días miércoles, y la recolección de ropa, cobijas, colchonetas y comida no perecible la realizaremos continuamente para ser enviada a esta fundación. Por favor tome en cuenta que necesitamos que estos artículos estén en buenas condiciones. Estamos seguros de la favorable acogida, para el exitoso desarrollo de nuestros proyectos de Servicio Comunitario, pues estamos dándoles la oportunidad a nuestros estudiantes de compartir momentos inolvidables en sus vidas.

The collection of paper, plastic bottles, cardboard, and tetra packs will take place every Wednesday, and the collection of clothes, blankets, mats, and non-perishable food will be collected permanently to send to this foundation. Please be aware that we can only collect clothes, blankets and mats that are in good condition. We are very excited about the new Community Service Curriculum and project as we provide our students with the opportunity to share and exchange ideas, experiences and values with people less advantaged themselves. CCAASS PPrroojjeecctt –– MMiissss PPoorrtteerr aanndd MMrr CChhooccllaa’’ss GGrroouupp Quisiéramos agradecer a todos los participantes en la última venta de pasteles que se llevó a cabo el día jueves 26 de septiembre, logramos recaudar $57,50. Esta es una cantidad considerable de dinero con lo que planeamos comprar pintura para decorar un mural del Centro Infantil en Quito que estamos ayudando. Adicionalmente a la pintura del mural, quisiéramos pedir a toda la comunidad la donación de libros, cobijas y ropa para niños de este centro. We would like to thank all participants of the latest school bake sale that took place on Thursday 26th September, we made $57.50. This is a considerable sum of money that we plan to use to buy paint. The material will help us paint a mural at the Centro Infantil in Quito during our Community Service project. In addition, to painting a mural, we would like to ask the BSQ community to make donations of books, blankets and children’s clothing to take to the centre. When making these donations, please bring your items to Room S6, Miss Porter’s room in the Secondary school. Thank you for your support

Hemos notado que algunos niños en nuestra sección están trayendo equipos electrónicos al Colegio. No tenemos en nuestra sección un lugar seguro para guardarlos, como casilleros, por lo que les pedimos de la manera más cordial que los niños no traigan teléfonos, Ipads, tablets u otros equipos electrónicos. Estamos por supuesto preocupados de la seguridad de estos equipos ya que pueden romperse o perderse en el Colegio. Tenemos varios equipos de deportes que pueden ser utilizados en Primaria, así como libros para colorear en un área de silencio, de tal forma que los niños estén lo suficientemente ocupados sin la necesidad de traer algún equipo electrónico. Por favor, les pedimos también tener en mente que no permitimos a los niños de Primaria comprar snacks en el bar del Colegio. Los niños tienen un pequeño receso y deben tener su propio snack o el que se adquiere en el Colegio, el mismo que es entregado en las clases. Esto también previene los problemas de pérdida de dinero. We have noticed that some children in our section are bringing electronic devices into school. We have no secure storage facilities such as lockers in our section and kindly ask that children do not bring in telephones, Ipads, Tablets or other devices. We are of course concerned for the safety of these devices as they can get broken or lost in school. We have a range of different sport equipment out at break times as well as books and colouring equipment in the quiet area so children have plenty of stimulus to keep them occupied without the need for any electronic devices. Could parents also please keep in mind that we do not allow children in Primary to buy snacks from the snack counter. Children have a very short break and they should either have their own snack to hand or have the school snack, which is delivered to the classrooms. This also prevents any issues with money going missing. Thank you for your support with these matters. The Primary and Early Years Team

AAccttiivviiddaaddeess ddee llooss PPeelliiccaannss // PPeelliiccaannss AAccttiivviittiieess

En la clase de Reception la semana pasada trabajamos en comparar tamaños. Hemos tenido un enfoque en Jack y las habichuelas y hemos construido diferentes castillos para que un Gigante viva en ellos. Hemos utilizado pinzas para mejorar nuestra motricidad fina y clasificado frijoles por color y tamaño. Algunos de los niños en Reception/Año 1 han estado conversando sobre la comida saludable esta semana. Ellos hicieron sus propios batidos de frutas y realmente disfrutaron tomándolos. Mientras tanto en Año 1 hemos estado practicando sumas y restas así como en inglés hemos estado creando listas y etiquetando las partes del cuerpo humano.

In reception this past week we have been learning to compare size. We have had a focus on Jack and the Beanstalk and have been building different castles for the Giant to live in. We have been using tweezers to improve our fine motor skills and sorting beans by colour and size. Some of the children in Reception/Year One have been talking about healthy eating this week. They made their own fruit smoothies and really enjoyed drinking them too! Whilst in Year One we have been practicing adding and subtracting on a number line and have began to estimate in Maths. In English we have been creating list and labeling the human body.

Es para mí muy grato presentarme: soy la nueva Chef del BSQ, mi nombre es Máyory de Gómez de la Torre, y me siento muy complacida de prestar mis servicios a la Comunidad del Colegio.

It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the new Chef of the BSQ, my name is Máyory Gomez de la Torre, and I am very pleased to provide my services to the School Community.

El tener hijos, como Chef, me ha permitido poner especial empeño en elaborar alimentos saludables y que tengan los nutrientes necesarios para nuestro organismo, ya que una alimentación sana es vida sana, este es nuestro lema.

Being a mother and a Chef has allowed me special insight into the importance and provision of healthy food with ingredients. Healthy eating is practicing a healthy life, this is our motto in the school kitchen.

Estoy muy contenta de poder mirar día a día reflejada en las caras de los niños la satisfacción al momento de servirse su snack o almuerzo y que nos solicitan algo más de lo que les gusta, igualmente con los jóvenes con los que comparto la misma experiencia.

I am very excited about the prospect of seeing your children’s response when eating our healthy snacks and lunches, especially when they ask me for some more of what they like.

En el campo de la gastronomía tengo experiencia de 25 años, durante los cuales he tenido la oportunidad de vivir en varias regiones del país, lo cual me ha permitido usar una variedad de alimentos saludables. También aporta a este campo el haber viajado a otros países, aprendiendo sus diferentes recetas y sabores.

I have worked in the field of gastronomy for twenty five years and during this time I have had the opportunity to live in different regions of the country. This has allowed me to prepare a variety of healthy food. Also traveling to other countries has assisted me to learn different recipes and flavors.

Me siento orgullosa de tener la confianza de muchas instituciones tales como: el Consep, Binaria Sistemas, Helderber, Contraloría General del Estado, y personal de diferentes universidades como: la Universidad Católica, Salesiana, Politécnica y muchas otras más, las cuales les hemos podido atender por muchos años.

My experience consists of working at the following institutions: The Consep, Binaria Sistemas, Helderber, Contraloría General de Estado and with some different Universities in Quito such as Universidad Católica, Salesiana, Politécnica and others.

Espero brindarles la misma confianza a ustedes, para una vida mejor y saludable. Estoy abierta a receptar cualquier sugerencia de su parte.

I look forward to working with the entire school community to ensure that the students are eating healthy diets which support full and active lives. I am open to hear from you about any suggestion you may have to support us with this.

Asamblea General Anual del BSQ / British School Foundation AGM

El Consejo de Administración del BSQ invita a ustedes a la Asamblea General de la Fundación del Colegio el día jueves 24 de octubre de 2013, a las 17h30 en la Biblioteca de Secundaria. La reunión iniciará cuando haya quórum o a las 18h00 en caso de no haberlo.

La Asamblea General consiste en los reportes del Presidente del Consejo de Administración y del Director del Colegio. Adicionalmente, ustedes podrán tratar cualquier otro asunto que provenga de estos reportes. Todos los padres de familia y el personal del Colegio están invitados a asistir a esta reunión.

The BSQ’s Board of Governors invites you to the Annual General Meeting of the British School Foundation on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 5.30 pm in the Secondary library. The meeting will begin when a quorum has been reached or at 6.00 pm in the absence of a quorum.

The AGM consists of reports from the Board Chair and the School Director. In addition, you will be able to raise any matters arising from the delivered reports. All parents and staff of the School are invited to attend the meeting.

Feriado 9 de Octubre trasladado al día viernes 11 de octubre/Public Holiday 9th October change to Friday 11th October Les recuerdo a todas las familias que el feriado del día 9 de Octubre, correspondiente a la Independencia de Guayaquil, por decreto presidencial fue trasladado a este día viernes 11 de octubre. Por lo tanto, la asistencia a clases el día 9 de octubre es normal para todos los estudiantes.

Please remember that the holiday on the 9th October, corresponding to the Independence of Guayaquil, by presidential decree was moved to this coming Friday 11 October. Therefore, attendance to the School on 9th October is normal for all students.

Last week we sent home the calendar for this school year including the time that the school will close at the end of each Mid Term Break or End of Term Break.
