Year 8 Community Project/ Proyecto Comunitario Año 8

Before we left the school for our trip we raised money by organising a bake sale. This money went towards buying supplies to build a library for a primary school that wasn’t as fortunate as ours. We also classified the books from our book drive into different categories and if they were not in good condition we mended them. In addition, we came up with some creative and fun activities for the kids in the school based on one or two of the books we had. When we arrived, it was fun to interact and socialize with the kids, like a boy called Freddie. We learnt about what his life at school is like. – Isabella Taylor, Anna Smith, Nicole Jimenez and Paula Calderon.

Antes de dejar el Colegio para nuestro viaje, recaudamos fondos organizando una venta de pasteles. Este dinero se utilizó para la compra de materiales para construir una biblioteca para una escuela primaria no tan afortunada como la nuestra. También clasificamos los libros en diferentes categorías y los que no estaban en buena condición, los arreglamos. Además, encontramos en estos libros algunas actividades creativas y divertidas para los niños de esta escuela. Cuando llegamos, fue divertido interactuar y socializar con los niños, como con uno llamado Freddie. Aprendimos cómo es su vida en la escuela. When we got there on the first day the kids were very happy and excited to see us. We went to the room for the library and started by cleaning and dusting and also began work on our mural. The kids were sad to see us go and it made us feel like we did something good. – Elijah Lorenzana, Galo Landivar and Dylan Fernández.

Cuando llegamos el primer día, los niños estaban muy contentos y emocionados de vernos. Fuimos al espacio destinado para biblioteca y empezamos a limpiarlo, desempolvarlo e iniciamos a trabajar en nuestro mural. Los niños estuvieron tristes al despedirnos y esto nos hizo pensar y sentir que habíamos hecho algo bueno. Elijah Lorenzana, Galo Landivar and Dylan Fernández.

There were many things that were hard, for example we had to deal with the fact that the kids loved coming into the room while we were painting. This made our progress slower. Sometimes paint dripped onto the wrong part of the wall and we had to improvise and make it work. On the other hand, there were many fun things like getting to know the kids and their habits. Some of the kids were really affectionate. For me it was a really interesting experience. – Melissa Dávila

Hay muchas cosas que fueron difíciles, por ejemplo tuvimos que lidiar con el hecho de que los niños querían entrar a la habitación mientras nosotros la pintábamos. Esto hizo nuestro progreso más lento. En algunos momentos la pintura goteó en la parte equivocada de la pared y tuvimos que improvisar y permitir que eso sirva. Por otro lado, hubo muchas cosas divertidas como conocer a estos niños y su ambiente. Algunos de los niños fueron muy afectuosos. Para mí, fue una experiencia realmente interesante. Melissa Dávila

Battery Delivery / Entrega de pilas usadas

Every year a group of schools in Quito get together to deliver the batteries they have collected throughout the academic year. This year this event, organized by Acuerdo Ecuador, took place in our school. The students had the opportunity to deliver their batteries and share experiences in the protection of the environment. In this way students encourage their communities to keep collecting batteries, instead of throwing them out with the rest of trash, so as to avoid environmental damage. In the photos below you will see our students from Ecoclub in Secondary and Ecodudes in Primary participating in the event. Ms Maggie Novoa

Cada año algunos colegios de Quito y los valles se reúnen para entregar los botes de pilas usadas que han recogido en su comunidad a lo largo del año escolar. Este año, este evento organizado por la Fundación Acuerdo Ecuador tuvo lugar en nuestro Colegio. Los jóvenes tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer otras experiencias de trabajo alrededor de la protección del medioambiente y continuar animando a sus comunidades a no tirar las baterías usadas junto a la demás basura para evitar los daños ambientales que esto causa. Biblioteca de Secundaria / Secondary Library

Secondary students have already received their overdue notices so as to keep their borrowing files up to date. Apart from Y12, who can keep their textbooks for two years, everyone must return all the textbooks and reading books to the library by the end of the year. If their filestill has outstanding materials at the end of this academic year, they will not be able to receive their new materials at the beginning of next academic year. Please make sure your sons and daughters have returned all their secondary loans in order to have a smooth start next year. Thanks for your support.

Los estudiantes de secundaria han recibido notificaciones para mantener al día sus carpetas de préstamos. Con excepción de Año 12, quienes tienen préstamos para dos años lectivos, todos los estudiantes deben devolver los textos de estudio y libros de lectura al finalizar el año lectivo. Si sus carpetas de préstamos no están al día, no podrán recibir sus nuevos textos de estudio para el año 2013/14. Les pido por favor asegurarse de que sus hijos/as hayan devuelto todos los materiales, para iniciar sin inconvenientes el próximo año escolar. Gracias por su colaboración.

Matrículas 2013-2014 / 2013-2014 Registrations Last week we sent home with each child the list of documents for next year’s registration. We would like to ask you to duly fill out the forms and return them to School by Friday, June 28. It is absolutely necessary for us to have the updated information for our students every year so we can organize and plan our academic year. Thank you for your cooperation.

La semana anterior enviamos a casa con sus hijos la documentación de matrícula para el año lectivo 2013-2014. Les pedimos, por favor, que completen todos los formularios debidamente firmados y los devuelvan al Colegio hasta el viernes 28 de junio. Es indispensable contar con la información actualizada sobre todos nuestros estudiantes para facilitar la organización de los servicios para el nuevo año escolar. Gracias por su colaboración.

Presentation String Quartet Ensemble Presentación Ensamble de Quarteto de Cuerdas

Hello to those who attended the show last Wednesday 19 June, the presentation of the String Quarter Ensemble called “Classical Highlights”. A string quarter is like a band, but plays classical music. There are for members who play musical instruments. During this presentation we saw two violins, one viola and one chelo.

Hola, para los que no estuvieron en el show el Miércoles 19 de Junio, les cuento que hubo una presentación de un Cuarteto de Cuerdas llamado “Classical Highlights”. Un Cuarteto de cuerdas es como una banda, pero que toca música clásica. También, en un Cuarteto de Cuerdas hay integrantes, pero los integrantes son todos instrumentos musicales. En el show que nosotros vimos había 2 violines ,1 viola y 1 chelo.

It was a good show, the musicians talked to us and told us where the music they were playing come from and what it was about. They asked us questions and if we answered correctly they gave us some prizes, and for those who didn´t answer any question they also receive a prize at the end. They played animal and seasonal musical sounds. It was very nice and the children didn´t get bored.

El show fue muy lindo, los músicos nos hablaron mucho y nos decían de dónde provenía la música que tocaban y de qué se trataba. Nos preguntaron cosas y si respondíamos bien nos daban un premio!.Y para los que no respondieron ninguna pregunta, también les dieron premios al final. Nos tocaron música con sonidos de animales y de estaciones del año. Estuvo muy lindo y los niños no nos aburrimos!.

From the Desk of the Director Desde el Escritorio de la Directora

Our New Teachers 2013 – 2014 / Nuevos profesores 2013-2014

I would like to introduce to you the new teachers who will be joining our team in August 2013. All of our new teachers are arriving between the 19th and 21st of August. Following that they will join us for a two day orientation and induction programme on the 22nd and 23rd of August here in school. I feel particularly blessed to have such a strong, highly qualified and experienced group of teachers coming to join the BSQ Teaching Team and I hope you will join us in making them very welcome.

Quisiera presentarles a los nuevos profesores que se unirán a nuestro equipo en el mes de agosto de 2013. Todos los profesores nuevos llegarán entre el 19 y 21 de agosto. Posteriormente vendrán al Colegio para participar en un programa de orientación e inducción los días 22 y 23 de agosto. Me siento particularmente bendecida por un grupo tan fuerte, tan calificado y con gran experiencia, quienes vendrán a trabajar con nosotros; espero que ustedes se unan a nosotros para darles la bienvenida.

Lynne Swales – Nursery Teacher, EYFS and Key Stage One Coordinator

Profesora de Nursery, Coordinadora de Educación Inicial y de Ciclo 1

Lynne is originally from a small town on the east coast of Scotland half way between St Andrew’s and Edinburgh in the Kingdom of Fife. She has two little boys, Nico and Andrew, who are very excited to be coming to Ecuador, especially climbing up the volcanoes!

Lynne es originaria de un pequeño pueblo en la costa este de Escosia, a medio camino entre St. Andrew y Edinburgo. Lynne tiene dos hijos, Nico y Andrew, quienes están encantados de venir a Ecuador, especialmente por escalar nuestras montañas.

Lynne studied and obtained her B.Ed. in Primary Education in Glasgow and spent a year in the city teaching before itchy feet took her off to Spain where she spent the next 5 years teaching various grades from Nursery to Year 4. After Spain she spent a further 7 years teaching in an international school in Bogota, Colombia before coming to her present school in Ras AlKhaimah, UAE. She has been there for 5 years and is the Team Leader for KG2 (4 to 5 year olds).

In her spare time she enjoys reading, going to the cinema and the gym – although she thinks she should really get there more often! She is very, very happy to be coming to BSQ, to work with the children and the community as a whole. She cannot wait to explore Ecuador and experience all it has to offer.

Lynne estudió y obtuvo su licenciatura en Educación Primaria en Glasgow y estuvo allí durante un año como profesora hasta que tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a España, donde enseñó durante 5 años a varios grados desde Nursery hasta Año 4. Después trabajó en una escuela internacional en Bogotá, Colomiba, antes de trabajar en su actual colegio en Ras AIKhaimah, UAE. Ha trabajado allí por 5 años y es quien lidera el equipo de Jardín (niños entre los 4 y 5 años de edad).

En su tiempo libre disfruta de la lectura, el cine y del gimnacio – aunque piensa que debería ir más a menudo. Ella está muy, muy contenta de venir al BSQ, para trabajar con los niños y con toda la comunidad. No puede esperar más para disfrutar del Ecuador y de todo lo que este país ofrece.

Mark Storey – R/1 Teacher – Profesor de Reception/Y1

Mark comes from Newcastle in the UK and has been teaching in a local school since he qualified as a teacher. He enjoys most sports, particularly football, and is a Newcastle United supporter. In the summer months he enjoys hiking and completed the Three Peak Challenge last August. Well done Mark!

Mark viene de Newcastle en el Reino Unido y ha sido profesor en un colegio local. Disfruta de muchos deportes, particularmente del fútbol, y es fanático de Newcastle United. Durante los meses de verano disfruta de las caminatas y completó el desafío Tres Pico el mes de agosto pasado. ¡Buen trabajo Mark!

Mark and his wife (Anna Storey – see below) married in February this year and are very excited about starting their new adventure at the British School Quito. Mark has been a keen international volunteer in the past, working in Kenya, Thailand, South Africa and India.

Mark is thoroughly looking forward to the new experiences and challenges that will come across daily and he can’t wait to begin a successful time at the British School Quito.

Mark y su esposa (Anna Storey – ver más abajo) casados desde el mes de febrero de este año, están muy contentos de iniciar su nueva aventura en The British School Quito. Mark ha sido voluntario internacional en el pasado, trabajó en Kenia, Tailandia, Sudáfrica y en la India.

Mark espera tener nuevas experiencias y metas cada día y ansía empezar con éxito en The British School Quito.

Catherine Blackmore – R/1 Teacher – Profesora de Reception / Y1

Catherine studied a Bachelor of Education at The Queensland University of Technology and has also undertaken studies in English as an Additional Language and Special Educational Needs. Catherine has over 20 years experience in Early Childhood and Primary teaching in international, remote, rural and indigenous school environments. Having lived and taught in Kuwait, Australia, Qatar, Kazakhstan and Malaysia, Catherine brings a wealth of experience to The British School Quito. She is really looking forward to moving to Quito and to exploring Ecuador’s beauty.

Catherine estudió Licenciatura en Educación en The Queensland University of Thechnology y también ha realizado estudios de inglés como Idioma Adicional y Educación en Necesidades Especiales. Catherine tiene más de 20 años de experiencia de enseñanza a niños de Educación Inicial y de Primaria en entornos de colegios remotos, rurales e indígenas en el exterior. Al haber vivido en Kuwait, Australia, Qatar, Kazakhstan y Malasia; Catherine viene con mucha experiencia para aportar a The British School Quito. Ella está con muchas ganas de llegar a Quito y explorar más sobre la belleza de Ecuador.

Victoria Hubert – Year 2 Teacher / Profesora de Año 2

Victoria studied Psychology BSc. (HONS) at The University of Liverpool. For two years she enjoyed working as a behavioural therapist for children and adults with a range of special needs. After training as a Primary teacher, at The University of Western England, she began her teaching career in London. Victoria’s passion for travel led her to teach at the British International School Shanghai, where she worked for five years. For the past two years, she has enjoyed teaching Year 2 at the English International School of Prague and is now looking forward to exploring South America.

Victoria estudió Psicología en la Universidad de Liverpool. Durante dos años ella disfrutó trabajar como terapeuta conductual con niños y adultos con rangos de necesidades especiales. Después de su entrenamiento como profesora de Primaria en la Universidad de Western England, ella inició su carrera de enseñanza en Londres. La pasión de Victoria por viajar la llevó a The British International School Shanghai, donde trabajó por cinco años. Durante los dos últimos años, ella ha disfrutado ser profesora de Año 2 en The English International School de Praga y está ansiosa de conocer ahora Sudamérica.

Chris Xerri – Year 3/4 Teacher – Profesor de Años 3/4

Chris comes from Crawley in the UK, and has most recently been working as a supply teacher around the South East of England. He has also worked in Oxfordshire, where he completed his PGCE degree.

Chris has also recently completed a Diploma in Special Educational Needs, and has taught abroad in Malta, having gained his TESOL qualification.

Chris’ hobbies include sports, music, reading, walking, films and socialising. He also travels to Lourdes in France every year, where he looks after sick pilgrims who visit there.

He has never been to South America before and is looking forward to exploring Ecuador and getting to know its people and culture. He is especially looking forward to working with the children and staff at BSQ.

Chris viene de Crawley en el Reino Unido, y recientemente ha trabajado como profesor suplente en todo el sureste de Inglaterra. También ha trabajado en Oxfordshire, donde completó sus estudios en Educación.

Chris también ha completado recientemente un diploma en Necesidades Especiales, y ha sido profesor en el exterior en Malta, donde obtuvo su calificación TESOL.

Chris disfruta de los deportes, música, lectura, caminatas, películas y socializar. También viaja cada año a Lourdes en Francia donde cuida a peregrinos enfermos que visitan la ciudad.

Nunca antes ha estado en Sudamérica pero está ansioso de conocer más de Ecuador, su gente y su cultura. Espera especialmente trabajar con los niños y el personal del BSQ.

Sarah Reeve – Year 3/4 Teacher - Profesora de Años 3/4

Sarah graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in Management Science. She then decided on a career change and gained her Post Graduate Certificate of Education for teaching from Warwick University. She has been teaching for 16 years and has experience of both teaching in the UK and internationally. She has been back teaching in Bristol in the UK for the past 6 years, but has previously worked in Italy, Romania and Portugal in International Schools. Sarah has experience teaching in KS1 and KS2.

Sarah loves to travel and explore new countries and cultures so she is really looking forward to coming, and getting to know Ecuador. She has travelled to Peru previously but would really like to explore more of South America.

In her spare time she plays a lot of sport. Sarah currently trains and competes with City of Bristol Rowing Club, but is looking forward to finding out about all of the outdoor activities that Ecuador has to offer.

Sarah se graduó en la Universidad de Loughborough con especialización en Administración. Posteriormente decidió cambiar de carrera y obtuvo su licenciatura en educación en la Universidad de Warwick. Sarah ha sido profesora por 16 años y tiene experiencia en enseñanza tanto en Inglaterra como en el exterior. Ha regresado a trabajar en Bristol en Inglaterra durante los últimos 6 años, pero también trabajó en Italia, Rumania y Portugal, en escuelas internacionales. Sarah tiene experiencia como profesora de Ciclos 1 y 2.

A Sarah le encanta viajar y explorar nuevos países y culturas por lo que tiene muchas ganas de venir a conocer Ecuador. Ha viajado por Perú previamente, pero quiere conocer más de Sudamérica.

En su tiempo libre hace deporte. Sarah actualmente entrena y compite en el Club Bristol Rowing, pero está ansiosa de conocer más sobre las actividades al aire libre que ofrece Ecuador.

Anna Storey – Year 3/4 Teachers – Profesora de Años ¾

Anna is excited about coming to work and live in Ecuador, and she can’t wait to explore the natural beauty of the country. She has spent three years teaching in Newcastle, England.

Anna está muy entusiasmada de trabajar y vivir en Ecuador, y no puede esperar para explorar la naturaleza de este país. Ella ha trabajado como profesora en Newcastle en Inglaterra.

Prior to this she studied Law at Northumbria University in Newcastle, and then spent a year working in a secondary school, before completing her PGCE. Whilst at university she spent two summers working at a children’s camp in Pennsylvania, USA.

Anteriormente estudió Leyes en Northumbria University en Newcastle, y después trabajó un año en una escuela secundaria, antes de completar su licenciatura. Mientras estaba en la universidad trabajó durante dos veranos en un campamento de niños en Pennsylvania en los Estados Unidos.

In her spare time she enjoys running, hiking, reading, and making the most of the outdoors. She will be teaching in Year 3/4, and she is looking forward to getting to know the children and their families.

En su tiempo libre disfruta trotar, escalar, leer y realizar todas las actividades al aire libre que pueda. Anna será profesora de Años 3/4, y tiene muchas ganas de conocer a los niños y a sus familias.

Louisa Cruickshanks – English / Drama Teacher / Profesora de Inglés y Teatro

Louisa will join BSQ in August as a Teacher of English Literature. She graduated from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, with an honours degree in English Literature and joined a graduate programme at the Daily Express Newspaper Group.

In 2005 Louisa completed a PGCE in English at the University of Leeds and went on to teach, for five years, at City of Leeds High School before embarking on an international adventure with her 6 year old daughter, Amber.

Louisa and Amber have been living in Shanghai, China, for two years – where Louisa is a Teacher of IGCSE and IB English and Head of House at the British International School of Shanghai. Both have enjoyed the exuberant Shanghainese lifestyle and Amber is fluent in Mandarin. They now look forward to settling in South America, extending their language studies to Spanish and embracing Ecuadorian culture.

Louisa se unirá a nuestro equipo de trabajo en agosto como profesora de Literatura en Inglés. Ella se graduó en Queen Mary and Westfield College, Universidad de Londres, con honores en la especialidad de Literatura en Inglés y se unió a un programa de postgrado con el grupo del periódico Daily Express.

En el año 2005, Louisa completó su licenciatura en inglés en la Universidad de Leeds y retornó a la enseñanza, por cinco años, en City of Leeds High School antes de embarcarse en la aventura de viajar al exterior con su hija Amber de seis años de edad.

Louisa y Amber han vivido en Shanghai, China por dos años, donde Louisa es profesora de IGCSE y de inglés dentro del programa BI, también es Jefe de las Casas en The British International School de Shanghai. Ambas han disfrutado de la exuberante vida de Shanghai y Amber habla fluidamente el Mandarín. Las dos no pueden esperar más establecerse en Sudamérica, ampliando sus estudios del idioma español y conocer más de la cultura ecuatoriana.

Matthew Hubert – Maths Teacher / Profesor de Matemáticas

Originally from Canada, Matt graduated with a B.Sc Physics (Honours) from the University of Waterloo and a B.Ed from Queen’s University. His first teaching post was in Northern Mexico and from there he has gone on to teach in Germany, Brazil, Russia and the Czech Republic most recently. Matt has taught a variety of subjects and curricula over the years, but his specialties are maths, physics and chemistry. In his spare time, Matt enjoys traveling, board and trivia games, learning new languages, astronomy and photography. He is very excited to be returning to South America and is eager to use his Spanish once again.

Orginalmente de Canadá, Matt se graduó en Física en la Universidad de Waterloo y con una licenciatura en la Universidad de Queen. Su primer cargo como profesor fue en México y después fue a enseñar en Alemania, Brasil, Rusia y en la República Checoslovaca, la más reciente. Matt ha enseñador una variedad de materias durante los años, pero su especialidad son las matemáticas, la fisica y química. En su tiempo libre Matt disfruta viajar, y de los juegos de mesa y trivia, aprendiendo nuevos idiomas, astronomía y fotografía. Matt está muy gustoso de regresar a Sudamérica y está dispuesto a utilizar su español una vez más.

Farewell to Our Departing Team Members / Despedida a nuestro personal que nos deja

Some of our teachers are only able to share some of their professional lives with us. This is never truer than in an international school where expatriate teachers join our learning community and, after a while, move on to share their skills and talents with other learning communities around the world. This year we must farewell some of our teachers that have worked with us over the past few years.

I would like to say farewell to the teaching team members who are leaving us this year. I would also like to thank them for their contribution to the learning and development of our students and for their contribution to the growth and development of BSQ as a learning community. Most of them are moving overseas, or back to their home countries, to continue their life’s journey. We thank them for their dedication and commitment to BSQ and we look forward to hearing of their future successes.

Algunos de nuestros profesores solo pueden compartir parte de su vida profesional con nosotros. Esto es muy cierto en escuelas internacionales donde los profesores extranjeros se unen a nuestra comunidad de aprendizaje y después de un tiempo deben irse y compartir sus habilidades y talentos con otras comunidades de aprendizaje alrededor del mundo. Este año debemos despedirnos de algunos de nuestros profesores que han trabajado con nosotros durante algunos años.

Quiero despedir a los miembros del equipo docente que nos dejan este año. También quiero agradecerles por su contribución al aprendizaje y al desarrollo de nuestros estudiantes y por su contribución al crecimiento y desarrollo del BSQ como comunidad. Muchos de ellos se van al exterior o de retorno a sus países de origen para continuar con sus vidas. Les agradecemos por su dedicación y su compromiso al BSQ y esperamos saber pronto de sus próximos éxitos.
