The turnout in each borough – 66% in Kensington & Chelsea and 70% in Hammersmith & Fulham – was relatively high, despite the appalling weather, the worst I can remember on polling day .  I campaigned strongly for a ‘Remain’ vote. I won’t go over the arguments again now, but my constituents should know that I was sure that the UK’s economic future was brighter  in the European Union. Local people agreed: 69% of people in Ken sington & Chelsea voted to remain, and 70% of people in Hammersmith & Fulham also chose to remain in the European Union. I also campaigned elsewhere in Britain for the “Str onger In” and “Conservatives In” teams, in a range of places with a range of views on the UK in the EU, from the Isle of Wight to Cambridge.  I wanted to thank all of those people from Chelsea & Fulham who  joined me in this campaign. Below, I have added some photographs from the campaign. Our campaign was overwhelmingly young, and I saw a lot of people from other political parties and a lot of people who had no party political background at all. It was a happy and harmonious campaign team. I also pay tribute to the local “Leave” campaign, the great majority of whom were also good campaigners, and I think local people saw a strong and good-natured campaign from both sides.  Nevertheless, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. The margin was substantial, around 1.3 million more voted to Leave than to Remain. As your local, elected representative, I have to recognise this. I will have no truck with these various petitions to somehow re-run the contest, or to declare London’s “independence”, or to find some other way to thwart the wishes of the people. I have had more than 200 emails or letters urging one of these courses of action, but such moves would be entirely wrong and would bring new convulsions. Once having set the parameters of the referendum, it cannot be for me, parliament as a whole, or anyone else to seek to override the result. The people trump parliament, not the other way round.  The way we move forward is to ensure that we recognise the result, and find the best way forward for Britain. That means a lot of hard work to help Britain achieve the best outcome possible from the talks to organise our new relationship with the European Union and, indeed, with the rest of the world. As Chief Secretary to the Treasury, I expect to play a significant rôle in the coming months in helping the UK to get the best result.  Meanwhile, we also need to heal divisions in the country and in our

Dear resident,

EU Referendum Result- My Disappointment, but Time to Move On First, let me thank all of those who voted in last Thursday’s EUreferendum.  The way we move forward is to ensure that we recognise the result, and find the best way forward for Britain. That means a lot of hardwork to help Britain achieve the best outcome possible from the talksto organise our new relationship with the European Union and, indeed, with the rest of the world. As Chief Secretary to the Treasury, I expectto play a significant rôle in the coming months in helping the UK to getthe best result. Meanwhile, we also need to heal divisions in the country and in our community. Not all of these were caused by the Referendum, but Iwas the very first to condemn the disgraceful attack on the PolishCentre in Hammersmith at the weekend. Now is a time for unity, not

divisions. More than 17% of my constituency is made up of EUnationals (including my wife!) and we all must send the message loudand clear that our fellow Europeans are still very welcome in Chelsea& Fulham, and indeed those from beyond this Continent also. Any EUcitizen feeling unhappy or unwelcome is always welcome to contactme or to come to see me at my weekly advice surgery (please contactme at [email protected]). I welcome views from all sections of the community as we moveforward. In conclusion, I look forward to representing Chelsea & Fulham in theHouse of Commons in the difficult months and years ahead. We needto make the most of our new situation, to remain united as a

community and as a country, and to look forward to maintaining our existing freedom and prosperity. Yours faithfully,

The Rt Hon. Greg Hands MP

Conservative Member of Parliament for Chelsea & Fulham and Chief Secretary to the Treasury
