The Canton, Mass., location was chosen because of its proximity to Boston and all points north, south and east to Worcester. The purpose of the demo days was to provide prospective customers with a Rubble Master crusher in operation, according to D.J. Cavaliere, co-owner of COR. “It is also much easier to schedule a two-day event and have multiple customers visit the demo rather than mobiliz- ing a piece of equipment to many different locations,” he added. The RM60, shown at the demo with a CS2500 single-deck final screen, was chosen because of its size, according to Cavaliere. “The RM60 not only could fit in almost any contractor yard but also can fit in their budget. Company owners these days are looking for a less expensive way to control the dumping and buying of process material and often they are their own best customer. The RM60 can also be utilized from a small paving contractor to a large outfit with multiple locations,” he said. Dubbed “the most compact crusher,” the RM60 is an “echo-model,” according to Alexander Taubinger, manager director of Rubble Master Americas, “meaning that it has no tracks on it…all the contractor needs is a trailer, hook-lift or roll-off truck.” With optional high-performance components such as pre- screens and final screens, owners can create a complete recy- cling center, according to the manufacturer. The Rubble Master RM60, which was introduced to North America about 20 years ago, is the only skid mount unit from RM. The RM70GO, RM80, RM80GO and RM100 are tracked mounted. (AP) The dropping water level on Lake Champlain is making it easier for construction crews working to build the new bridge between Vermont and New York. The archway for the new bridge is being assembled at a marina in Port Henry, N.Y., but the work stalled on the archway early last month because of the record flooding on the lake. The high water also made it difficult to get supplies to the bridge, New York State Transportation Engineer John Grady told Vermont Public Radio. “We did lose our causeways, our access points on both sides, the more critical one the New York causeway is where we receive deliver- ies of materials, we were able to raise the elevation of that causeway by adding additional stone,” he said. The bridge’s concrete substructures are complete, and the steel approach spans are being put in place. On the Vermont side, the steel beams are being prepared for concrete decking. The old bridge linking the two states failed in the fall of 2009. The old bridge was demolished in late 2009 and work began last year on the $70 million replacement bridge. There have been delays due to technical problems and the harsh win- ter, which preceded the spring flooding. But the target date for opening the bridge is still Oct. 9. Grady said the contractor is working to speed up the project. “Both with the obstructions during our underwater work, with the severe winter with high winds and unfortunately as everyone knows with the terrible flooding conditions that Champlain experienced this year, we’re doing everything we can to overcome those,” Grady said. Progress on Bridgein Maine RunningAhead of Schedule

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Construction on a new bridgethat will link the Maine cities of Portland and South Portlandis running ahead of schedule.

The new Veterans Memorial Bridge is due to open July 1,2012.

The $63 million bridge over the Fore River is being builtroughly parallel to the existing bridge, which will beremoved after the new one is finished.

Maine Department of Transportation Project Manager JeffFolsom told the Portland Press Herald the new bridge isbeing built to last 100 years. It is being built with low-per-meability, high-strength concrete that contains corrosioninhibitors and should require less maintenance than the oldbridge.

The old bridge was built in 1954. It is considered safe, butthe deck and pilings are deteriorating.

Resident Donates, DevelopsLand for Community Park

John Whalley’s dream of turning a 70-acre parcel of land into a park is about tocome true. When it does, it will be a testi-monial to his dedication in helping his com-munity and his determination to take chargeto get things accomplished.

Located in Southwick, Mass., the park, which is scheduled to open later this year, will include seven athletic fields, playscapes, pavilion, concession stand and nature trails.About 40 acres will remain permanentlyprotected park land.

“My initial idea was to purchase the prop-

erty and donate it to the town,” said Whalley, who knew that the possibility of condosbeing built on the site was likely. “But withthe way the economy was going, I figuredthe town would not have the resources to doanything with the land and it would sit there. So I decided to develop the park myself.”

Whalley hired Crestview Construction,Inc. to clear and grade the land and evenbrought out his own Bobcat equipment towork around the property.

Gets Things Done With Bobcat Equipment

A former high school math and scienceteacher who became an early user of com-puters in the classroom, Whalley started hisown company in 1979. Today Whalley

Computer Associates is one of the largestcomputer resellers in the United States.Along the way an unlikely event introducedhim to Bobcat equipment.

“We hired a company to maintain ourparking lot in the winter,” he recalls.“Getting them to clean up the leftover sandturned into a hassle every spring. They werealways busy. I live on a farm and had bor-rowed someone’s Bobcat loader to put in acouple miles of fence. I saw Bobcat had asweeper attachment — just the answer to myparking lot dilemma. So I purchased a T190

compact track loader and sweeperattachment from Bobcat of GreaterSpringfield. It did great, both at thecompany and on the farm. I didn’thave to wait for jobs to get done orborrow a loader.”

When Whalley began developingthe park, he borrowed a Bobcatexcavator from CrestviewConstruction to do some soil testing.

“It worked so well that I decidedto buy my own,” he said. “At first Itried an E35 for a project on myfarm — digging a 4-foot-deep, 300-foot-long utility trench. Someonetold me it would take four hours. Iactually dug 500 feet in less thantwo hours.”

Deciding he wanted a heaviermachine, Whalley purchased anE45.

“It’s an outstanding excavator,”he said, noting all the M-Seriesimprovements that make it so com-fortable to operate.

Today Whalley moves his BobcatSystem — loader and excavator —around on a trailer, using the equip-ment on his farm, at his companyand at the park putting in water and

electrical lines.“This equipment is a pleasure to operate

and now I don’t have to depend on others,”he said. “Plus I get the satisfaction of doingsome of this work myself.”

The day Whalley turns the $8 million parkover to the town will be even more satisfy-ing. It is dedicated to the memory of his son,John, who died four years ago.

“He loved the outdoors and grew uparound the town’s recreation center, as havemy 12 grandchildren,” Whalley said. “Nowthese facilities will be available for everyoneto enjoy.”

This article was reprinted with permissionfrom WorkSaver Magazine, Summer 2011Issue.

Ryan Whalley is shown here operating the M-Series E45 excavator at the future park site.
