A Prayer Campaign for Nigerian Girls !

This week, the Adventist world church launched a prayer campaign for the nearly 300 schoolgirls abducted by a militant group six weeks ago in northern Nigeria. Church officials are asking people to use the social media hashtags and phrase "#unitedinprayer for #nigeriagirls" to join the prayer campaign for the situation.

When did this ministry start? The ministry came out of Food on the 15th, which started eight years ago when Pointers Run Elementary School’s PTA Community Service Committee identified meaningful student service projects….One was collecting and delivering groceries to the seniors who often run out of money to buy food after the 15th of each month. During the school year, Pointers Run and Dayton Oaks elementaries, along with Clarksville Middle School, deliver groceries monthly to seniors who live in Morningside Park Apartments in Jessup, Md. Some residents live on as little as $9,000 per year. !Why does New Hope have this ministry? New Hope supports Morningside Park Apartments during the summer months (June, July and August) to fill the gap when schools do not deliver groceries. It is part of our local community outreach.!Why do you do this ministry? It has given me and my children an opportunity to help others and see the fruits of our service. So many ministries involve helping others whom we never meet. We not only provide the seniors with food but then fellowship, get to know them and give a hug. I got involved in the ministry as a natural extension of my involvement in the Pointers Run’s PTA, but I stay involved now that my children are in college and high school because it makes such a difference, and I have gotten to know many of the seniors over the years. !I also support the ministry because my grandmother, who passed away at age 98, lived on her own until age 92. It was not until she had a stroke and moved to an assisted living center that we realized a network of people in her community helped her with groceries, laundry and so many other essential tasks. This ministry is a small way for me and my family to give back what so many others unselfishly gave my grandmother. It also provides a welcomed opportunity to fellowship with other church

members, as we always have a potluck picnic after deliveries.!!What exactly do you need from the congregation — and when? This summer, we would like at least 60 families in the congregation to adopt a senior and provide a bag of groceries for delivery June 14, July 19 and Aug. 9. We have a shopping list and bag that people can use to fill with nutritious groceries. We need families to provide groceries on the Sabbath before and the day of delivery — and to help deliver groceries to the seniors’ doors. We also accept toiletries such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste. !How else can people contribute to the cause? First and foremost, our members can pray for the senior citizens and for the ministry. Each delivery seems to include a miracle of fishes and loaves as the Lord provides for the seniors through His people. We have had times when there did not seem to be enough food, but we were able to fill the bags. People also can contribute gift cards to grocery stores such as Giant, Harris Teeter, Safeway or even Walmart if they do not have time to shop, and we will use them to buy groceries for delivery. !Why do you think this ministry is important? It gives us an opportunity to personally serve the seniors in our community. It is truly a hands-on ministry with an opportunity to serve others and to fellowship with members. We have delivered groceries to relatives and friends of members who lived at Morningside Park and forged personal friendships over the years.!Questions? Stop by the table in the lobby today, or contact Bernard at 301-254-0300.

With summer around the corner, it’s time to gear up for Sharing Our Pantry: Food for Seniors, our ministry for senior citizens living at Morningside Apartments in Jessup, Md. Learn more about this ministry from coordinator Angie Bernard in this Q&A.

My niece is captain of her high school color guard. The color guard performs with the marching band during football games and other school events. The band provides the music, and the guard provides the artistic and athletic flare. As one of the best in Maryland, my niece's color guard has won many state and regional championships.

One day, I attended a practice before a big competition. The band and color guard were spread out across the football field, practicing a formation in which the members had to crisscross the field in precise positions to create various designs. It was fascinating to see what they created — all without any outline or markers to guide them. In this particular practice, things were not going well. Formations that were supposed to look like four-leaf clovers looked more like clovers with only 2.5 leaves; pinwheels looked like a flattened tire; and their finale, an American flag, looked like a flag with a broken pole. The band and color guard seemed lost and disoriented, desperately trying to find their marks.

The director, appearing quite unhappy, looked over the disheveled formation from the top of a scaffolding-like structure on the sidelines. “Guys, you are not working as a team," he said. "You are focused on yourselves and not looking at others around you. You cannot make the formations if all you see is your feet.” Then he attached a bright-colored flag to a railing at the top of the structure he stood on. “Keep your eyes on this flag," he said." This is your marker. You should keep this flag in your sight at all times; then you will know where you are.”

The director was correct in putting up the flag as a marker. The next formation was

beautifully executed, as were the following formations. The rest of the practice went very well as the color guard and band became one cohesive unit, moving into their formations with precision. The flag was a critical focal point, allowing them to gauge their positions and find their markers. When everyone looked at the flag, formations went well. When someone lost sight of the flag, he or she would lose his or her place.

When all members of a team are focused on a shared vision or goal, the team succeeds. When certain members pursue their own goals and expectations, the team is weak.

In Acts 2, we see the formation of the first Christian church — Team Church. They were an amazingly united and cohesive team. “All the believers were together and shared everything. They would sell their land and the things they owned and then divide the money and give it to anyone who needed it. The believers met together in the temple every day. They ate together in their homes, happy to share their food with joyful hearts” (Acts 2:44-46). The members of the first church were a thriving team because their focal point was not themselves — but Jesus Christ. When Christ is the marker everyone looks toward, the team becomes one cohesive unit, working together for one purpose toward one goal, being the living, breathing incarnate of Jesus Christ on earth.

Do we, as a church, resemble Jesus Christ incarnate on earth?

Weekly Challenge Read Acts 2:44-46. This is a description of the church, the body of Christ. Is this what you are experiencing in your church? Spend time this week asking God what changes He needs to make in your life so you can be the body of Christ as described in Acts 2; so you can be Jesus Christ incarnate.!

For the Family Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 together as a family to help children understand what it means to be the body of Christ. Ask questions, such as, "what happens when we don’t have a hand; an eye; a leg?" Then ask, "what happens when we don’t have a head?" Explain that Jesus is the head of the church. Ask, "if Jesus is not the head, then what will happen to the church?"
