It is amazing how many people and cultural events are con-

nected with Nantucket, not the least of which is the cele-

brated Macy’s department store Thanksgiving Day Parade

that began in 1924 in New York City. The holiday event,

originally a reflection of the traditions of the store’s numer-

ous immigrant employees, was first made up of those work-

ers accompanied by all types of animals, bands playing

music, decorated floats and festive, multi-colored balloons.

Aging Well

There are things in this world that get better with age. They tell me that red wine is one

such thing. I’ve heard that certain aged cheese also has acquired the label of delica-

cy. And people, I’ve found, oftentimes get better with every passing year. Case in point,

my own dear, sweet mother recently celebrated a milestone birthday that rhymes with sev-

enty, and she just keeps improving with every passing day. And her own dear, sweet moth-

er passed her ninety-fifth birthday last March. Apparently those Willcox women, in addi-

tion to having the long-life gene, just keep on getting better as the calendar pages turn.

My mother and grandmother notwithstanding, there are many things in this world that

do not age well. Fish, I have found, tends to fall into this category. And no, don’t go look-

ing for a segue here (though as a rule, segues do tend to age quite gracefully, but I

digress). Much like fish, houseguests do not seem to improve the longer they stick around.

And while we’re on the subject of houseguests, I think it’s safe to say that there are ele-

ments of a house that also do not seem to improve with advancing years. And while we

might consider that a segue, I’m going to let it go by without much fanfare, much like

yours truly own November birthday.

It’s a fact of nature on Nantucket that the winter weather is less than hospitable. The

recent meteorological unpleasantness that’s been plaguing our little sandbar is the kind of

weather that wreak havoc on things like houses. Sure, we’ve got to turn off the water to

the outdoor shower and make sure that the pipes don’t freeze. But there’s more than that.

Wind and rain – and the inevitable snow and ice that we’ll get soon enough – can wear

down the outside of your house faster than you might have thought possible. And often

the repairs required by that damage are painful.

There is some good news, though, and that’s the fact that you can keep the costs down

by doing a little routine maintenance. If you don’t have a regular caretaker for your house,

there’s no time like the present to find one. Ask around. You’ll get plenty of recommen-

dations from people. Find somebody you like and have them come over to the house to

check things out. Chances are, you’ll be able to save yourself a couple of bucks in the long

run. Think of it as changing the oil in your car. You can pay to have the little stuff done

before it creates a bigger problem, or you can pay a lot later on because you didn’t feel

like taking care of it when it was a little problem.

The thing about houses is that the average person like yours truly can’t look at the out-

side and tell you if anything is wrong. Again, think about your car. How many times have

you popped the hood and looked at the engine when something wasn’t right? And out of

those times, how many times did you have any realistic chance of figuring out what was

wrong with your car, let alone actually fixing the problem? Unless you’re a mechanic,

you’ve been in that spot along with me. You stare, you scratch your head, you stare some

more. Funny thing, though. When you put the hood back down, the car still doesn’t start.

Same thing with your house. What do deteriorated shingles that need to be replaced

look like? How about trim that might need to get replaced or window frames that have

served their useful life? How about any other of the hundreds of things that seem to get

damaged on a house? In my case – and I’m guessing I’m not alone here – if the problem

is so bad that I can identify it, it’s too late.

But as is so often the case on Nantucket, there are some very talented people who can

look at your house and tell you exactly what needs to be repaired. And, just as important,

they can tell you what can wait another year to be replaced. With the economy as tight as

it is these days, it’s nice to know that there are people around who can help us save money

both in the short term and in the long term.

Folks, during what seems to be an interminably long holiday season that extends into

the wee days of January – and even into Valentine’s Day, for that matter – it’s easy to

overlook the things that aren’t “fun” to spend money on. Yep, you know it. Things like

house repairs are high on the list. Most people I know don’t have a new roof on their

Christmas list. It’s not fun to spend the money on those things, especially when you don’t

have the expendable income that you might have had a couple of years ago. But it’s eas-

ier to spend it when you know you’re doing something that will save you money down

the road. So do yourself a favor and keep up with the routine maintenance.

Like Dad always says, “You never have the time or the money to get your oil changed

until your transmission falls out. Then, somehow, you manage to find the time and the

money to get the whole thing fixed.” There’s that pesky car metaphor again. Looks like

I’m getting some mileage out of that one. And yes, let’s cue the rim shot there, just for old

time’s sake.

Andrew Spencer, a fifth-generation summer resident-turned-year-rounder, has beenwriting about Nantucket since moving to the island full-time in 2002. He is the author of,“Tower of Thieves: Inside AIG’s Corporate Culture of Greed,” and also the co-author of“Bear Trap: The Fall of Bear Stearns and the Panic of 2008.”

When Pat Joyner was a small child growing up

in New York City, one of her favorite times of

the year was Thanksgiving. Sure, the special dinner

and desserts were good, but it

was the wonder of the gigantic

balloon characters floating in

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day

Parade that she looked forward

to most.

Now a grandmother and a

broker with the island’s

Compass Rose Real Estate

office, Joyner has more than a

front row seat at the Macy’s parade

— she is part of the crew that makes the historic

event happen. For the last six years, Joyner has been

an integral member of the parade’s inflation team,

helping set aloft the likes of Spiderman, Scooby

Doo, Snoopy, Barney, and Chicken Little. This year

she will watch SpongeBob SquarePants soar to mag-

ical heights, and protect him from harm as he drifts

through Manhattan’s streets to the delight of count-

less, wide-eyed children.

Little did the young Patty know that one day she

would live on Nantucket, the birthplace of the man

who founded Macy’s and began hosting the thrilling

parade celebration in 1924. And little did she know

that her essential and much-treasured part in the

parade would develop from her acquaintance with a

woman she worked with when Joyner moved to

Nantucket.

Joyner worked in the Pro Shop at Miacomet Golf

Club for several years after becoming an island resi-

NEWS REPORT

What many may not know is that the iconic Macy’s

store, which has grown to be one of the country’s old-

est, most prolific chain of businesses, was established

by Rowland Hussey Macy, a native Nantucketer born

in August, 1822 to Quaker sea captain John Macy and

his wife, Eliza Barnard. When R.H. Macy was just 15

he did his maritime duty aboard the Emily Morgan,

sailing the Pacific Ocean for three years. It is written

that while Macy was in charge of steering the ship

during stormy night weather, the reddish star Arcturus

became his navigational guide to keep the vessel safe-

ly on course. Some time after his journey ended,

Macy had a red star tattooed on the back of his hand.

Over the span of decades since Macy’s opened in

Manhattan in 1858, a red star has been the store’s sig-

nature logo. Though it is rumored that Macy once had

a store on Nantucket, he was not associated with the

H.M. Macy Dry Goods shop photographed at 60 Main

St. in the 1800s.

Besides the fact that Macy was a Nantucket native,

he also knew famed artist and children’s book illustra-

tor Tony Sarg, who used to bring his family from New

York to visit the island. In 1921, Sarg bought a house

here on Liberty Street and opened his first local shop

on Centre Street. Additionally, Sarg was the creator of

Macy’s mesmerizing, animated Christmas store win-

dows. In 1927 he was asked to design oversized heli-

um balloon characters to be featured in the Macy’s

Thanksgiving parade, starting with such beloved

images as Felix the Cat, a smiling elephant, a toy sol-

dier and including designs collaborated with Walt

Disney like Mickey Mouse. The Nantucket Historical

Association holds the largest Sarg collection in the

world, and has more than 100 images of his balloons

in its on-line database.

NEWS REPORT

Third in a Series

By Peter B. BraceProperty News Writer

When the Nantucket High

School went to the Historic

District Commission to seek

approval of its 190-foot wind tur-

bine, the commission said it did not like the pro-

posed location next to the historic Newtown

Cemetery on Sparks Avenue.

Such a modern piece of equipment juxtaposed

against the cemetery, visible from nearby roads,

despite 20th and 21st Century development already

surrounding the graveyard, did not belong so close

to the burial site of the island’s ancestors, ruled the

commission.

Instead, the HDC allowed the turbine to be

installed 200 feet from the school, next to the rear

parking area.

When a Liberty Street resident in the Old

Historic District proposed a small solar panel for

his roof, the HDC conceded, but only after the

property owner presented plans to disguise the solar

panel as a shuttle, a sliding roof hatch. Another

OHD resident successfully hid solar panels within a

pergola.

This bargaining between property owners and

the HDC is another required hurdle for those pro-

posing wind and solar systems on their property.

However, the success or failure of each application

is subjective to the site, type of installation, size,

appearance and its visibility.

”It’s certainly different when you’re looking at

wind than when you’re looking at solar, and it’s cer-

tainly different when you’re looking at vertical

wind turbines than when you’re

looking at a traditional three-blade

wind turbine,” said Barbara

Gookin, a member of the Energy

Study Committee who helped the

high school work its way through

the HDC process.

In all cases, wind turbines

require good elevation to turn as

efficiently as possible. Solar photovoltaic panels

require as much exposure to direct sunlight as pos-

sible for optimal performance. In both cases, the

preservation of Nantucket’s historic integrity is of

greatest concern to the HDC.

“The wind applications seem to be a challenge

when they’re larger because this is going to affect

more people and there’s a noise issue,” said HDC

Administrator Mark Voigt.

The HDC is also concerned about the potential

visual impact of roof-installed solar panels. “That

seems to be a stopper. It’s either going on the roof

or not at all. They seem to want to put them on the

roof,” said Voigt. “We would understand on the

ground that there’s too much foliage to make it rea-

sonable. [But], the HDC looks at these things —

there are visual impacts.”

Seeking clarity of its historic preservation, the

HDC wrote and adopted an addendum to its build-

ing bible, “Building with Nantucket in Mind”

called “Sustainable Preservation” in Fall 2009.

In it are new guidelines for windows and doors,

solar technologies, wind energy conversion sys-

tems, alternative building materials, rain collection

barrels and permeable paving blocks.

The opening sentence of this addendum explains

the commission’s goals: “The primary intent of this

document is to provide assistance to Nantucket’s

building owners and construction professionals

seeking to incorporate the concepts and practices of

sustainability into their structures, while at the same

time maintaining the historic integrity of the indi-

vidual buildings, and through them, the overall

character of the island.”

The HDC urges applicants to make every effort

to reduce a building’s energy consumption before

deciding on wind, solar or both. If a property owner

chooses solar, the commission recommends ground

placement. If property owners decide to put panels

on their structures, that they do so on garages and

sheds, instead of on the main roof plane of the pri-

mary building.

For wind turbine installations, in addition to vis-

ibility from publicly traveled ways and its impact

on the property owner’s neighborhood, its actual

appearance is also a deciding factor for the commis-

sion. To wit, the HDC wants wind turbines and their

towers to be painted a muted color that blends in

with its surroundings and to be devoid of any letter-

ing and graphics.

“These guidelines grew out of looser, unofficial

reviews of these projects, so I don’t think the com-

mission’s changed its review,” said Voigt. “It’s been

a more formal review and a better set of guidelines

for the property owners.”

libraries and the love doingresearch in libraries. They lovegoing through piles of oldbooks and documents, search-ing for that elusive clue thatwill shed some new light on arelatively obscure (what theylike to call “historic”) fact. A

lot of times they end up withfindings that include phraseslike, “It’s difficult to pinpointthe exact year when such-and-such-a-group actuallycame into existence, but thefirst recorded organizedmeeting was in whateveryear.”

I’m not a historian.

That’s not to say that Idon’t like research (I don’t, justfor the record) and that I don’tlike libraries (again, not theworld’s biggest fan). Butbefore anybody gets all out ofsorts and ready to yell at me,I’d point out that onNantucket, we don’t have alibrary. We have an

Atheneum. Totally differentballgame. I knew that legalretainer would come in handy.

And speaking of lawyers, Ihappened to be in the neigh-borhood recently of DenbyReal Estate on Whaler’s Lane,an office that was, at the timeof my arrival, populated by

dent. Through her job, she met summer resident

Linda Lynch, a fellow employee and also fencing

director at Stevens Institute, an engineering school

in Hoboken, N.J. By happenstance, Joyner learned

that Lynch had a connection to the Macy’s parade

because students and others at Stevens were

involved in storing and inflating the Macy’s bal-

loons.

“I asked Linda about it and she said ‘You can’t

be a fly-by-night’,” said Joyner. “I loved it. This is

my sixth year.”

Though the balloons are fun, the work to pre-

pare, direct and protect them is hard work. Each

year, the inflation team has refreshment training

and test new balloons. Joyner goes to New York the

day before Thanksgiving when the featured

designs, measuring an average of four car lengths,

are laid out on the asphalt on 77th and 82nd streets,

off Central Park and adjacent to the Museum of

Natural History.

Once the balloons are unfolded they are covered

with netting and anchored with sandbags to prevent

them from premature lift-off as helium trucks begin

the inflations. Joyner and her 50 colleagues must

continually move the sandbags as the balloons fill

with thousands of pounds of helium gas.

“Once they start to go up, if you haven’t inflated

an ear or an arm you’re in trouble,” said Joyner,

explaining that a schematic is provided for the fill-

ing of each unique balloon.

There are usually 14 balloons at each parade.

They are secured in place by rope attachments to

heavy-duty golf cart vehicles. The crew sleeps

Wednesday night at the Museum of Natural History

so they are on hand first thing Thanksgiving morn-

ing to re-inflate any balloon that may have lost a bit

of helium during the wee hours. As each balloon is

driven into the parade queue, their anchoring net-

ting is removed and their ropes are released enough

to allow the characters to soar. The ropes remain

attached to the assigned carts as the parade contin-

ues, used to keep the balloons free of trees, build-

ings and in control when they enter a cross-section

where winds will gust.

“We have to be very careful,” said Joyner. “It’s a

lot of work, but it’s a wonderful parade and it’s so

exciting to be a part of it. The balloons are magical

and the kids just love it. It’s absolutely fascinating.”

Joyner said last year about one million people of

all ages walked by the Stevens site to watch as the

balloons were being readied for the big event.

“It has almost become bigger than the parade,”

she said of the preparations.

PEOPLEPROPERTIES

Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did they teach you? There were two people who influenced me most: My Aunt Mary, who taughtme many things, most importantly that all things needed to have style, graceand beauty.Additionally, she had a strong work ethic that was passed on with anintense commitment to acheieving goals. My husband, Billy, was a tremendous influence. He intro-duced me to Nantucket, and helped nurture my love and understanding of the island. His way withpeople was an incredible example.

What do you listen to, watch and/or read to find out what’s going on in the world?I am a news junkie, so I read as many papers as I can — The New York Times,Wall Street Journal, and as many magazines that I can fit in. I watch countless news and public affairs programs on net-work and cable TV. Hopefully, all this will make me know what’s happening.

What three current or historical figureswould you invite to dinner, and why? This is a hard question. There are so many interesting people that I have a problem choosing. Here’s my short list: Elie Wiesel,Abigail Adams, andPresident Bill Clinton — this way, I can cover his-tory and politics, two of my passions.

Are you reading anything interesting now? I just finished “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest,” by StiegLarsson. As the third and final book in this trilogy, it is the best. The pulse racing narrative, the complicated story, is all part ofwhat makes mysteries so much fun. They are puzzles. Occasionallythere is a really good one with a continuing main character whobecomes a friend. It makes reading so satisfying and so much fun.

How do you help a buyer celebrate their new purchase?First, I plan a great celebratory dinner at one of my favorite islandrestaurants. Then I personalize a house-warming gift based onwhat I have learned about the buyer. I want that gift to becomepart of their Nantucket experience.
