From Tuesday to Thursday there is an inconsistent E/SE ground swell with waves only around the one to two-foot mark. Winds through to Friday will be tending northerly with lighter NW in the morning. Spots to check would be the open beaches for more swell early, then the northerly corners in the arvos. Saturday has a southerly change

with SW winds early, followed by a SE change. However, waves will be even smaller Saturday around the half to one-foot mark. Hopefully there is a small southerly ground swell predicted to build for Sunday arvo. So hit the open beaches. However, winds will be from the E/NE, making it a bit messy. High tide is between mid-morning and lunchtime all this week and the water temp is still sitting around the 20-degree mark. A spring suit for the early morning is

a good call. Good surfing and here’s hoping for at least some rideable waves.

Reading the fi scal musings of Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens is, for me, a bit like reading Spanish (and

I can’t read Spanish). As one of this nation’s most important economists, on matters of fi nance Glenn’s language can be diffi cult for the non-fi scally minded to grapple with, but that doesn’t mean us plebs should ignore him.

Recently he has had some very interesting things to say, which is why you’ll fi nd him, this week, playing a major role in our cover story. Jarna Baudinette has deciphered his words, and those of some other pretty clever Australians, to bring you the latest on the nation’s housing market. If you’re sick of the hyperbole surrounding the economy and want a level-headed view of what’s really going on, and where we might be headed, turn the page.

On the subject of the housing market, it

seems that buyers are out but prices are still down, which means the bottom has probably been reached and while we may not see prices rise quickly in the near future, they will go up. Anyone wanting to buy a little investor (and if I had some spare cash at the moment that would be me) will fi nd now is a good time. That’s why we’ve asked a few agents for their picks of investment properties for sale, and we feature that in MPP on page 40.

PREVIEWThere is plenty of interest from home owners and investors about where property prices will go. They might be pleased to know there are some strong indicators pointing towards a recovery of our property industry in the not too distant future.

In a recent report on the Queensland economy, Colonial First State’s senior analyst for investment markets, Belinda Allen, said

no matter where she travels in Australia, the question she encounters most often is her outlook for house prices.

“With so much wealth tied up in the family home, and investment properties, this interest is easy to understand,” Allen said. In the late ’90s and early to mid 2000s, house prices were growing exponentially, leading many to believe property was the ultimate get-rich-quick solution. But there’s nothing like a global fi nancial crisis to bring price growth – and our expectations – grinding to a halt.

While there’s no doubt the housing industry has suffered, in her report Allen reminded readers that house price performance can be diverse depending on the region, contrasting price data from the Brisbane market with fi gures from the Gold Coast, Townsville and Cairns to show how local economic conditions impact each area. Since the GFC, house prices across Australia have softened between fi ve and 10 per cent, and while some regional areas have dropped signifi cantly more, others – such as parts of

Queensland and Western Australia heavily impacted by the mining sector – have fared better.

In short, a region’s wider economy has a signifi cant impact on its property market. Last year was a particularly challenging year for the Sunshine Coast, with a heavily subdued construction industry and shrinking retail and tourism sectors wearing down consumer sentiment. Correspondingly, median sales fi gures released by the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) in June showed Sunshine Coast house prices softened 3.6 per cent over the previous year, and what the REIA deems ‘other dwellings’ – units, fl ats and townhouses – experienced a much greater drop of 8.5 per cent.

However, over the most recent quarter the drop for other dwellings on the Sunshine Coast reduced to 2.2 per cent and house prices actually grew (albeit modestly) by 0.9 per cent. While prices certainly aren’t rising in signifi cant terms, they do appear to have settled somewhat.

An August 19 statement from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland said while sales volumes had been down over the June quarter, as buyers “retreated from the property market … [and] waited for the

return of stamp duty concessions”, house prices had held their ground, “remaining steady in the face of lower sales activity across the state”.

REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said in the statement while the fundamentals of the Queensland property market are positive, it is important for Queenslanders to remember real estate is predominantly a confi dence-based industry.

“We had improving confi dence levels at the start of the June quarter, but the continued economic uncertainty here and overseas has had an impact on confi dence levels generally,” he said.

“We believe the market will eventually start to hit its stride in a more vigorous manner due to pent-up demand, population growth and the ongoing mining boom putting pressure on the real estate market.

“But this may take longer than we originally believed because of the ongoing uncertainty about our state’s fi nances. Once this has been addressed, we should see the gates of confi dence open once more.”

Property analyst Michael Matusik also sees a lack of dwelling investment as “one of the biggest drags on the economy”, writing on his blog that, “For the property market, as I have repeated many times of late, one of the crucial missing ingredients is confi dence.”

In fact, a range of economic analysts have arrived at similar conclusions. In December last year the ANZ Australian Property Outlook found uncertainty was high despite fundamentals pointing to a “cautiously optimistic medium-term” view of housing, supported by “a robust economic outlook, limited forced selling, improved affordability and an ongoing tightening of the Australian housing/supply balance”.

In addition to global economic and job uncertainty, ANZ economists attributed this “toxic” sentiment to “continued predictions of an imminent collapse in Australian house prices by some commentators”, which have “weighed on market confi dence”.

In late July Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)

governor Glenn Stevens addressed these predictions in a speech titled The Lucky Country, saying the “large run-up” in dwelling prices Australia experienced alongside most of the developed world until a few years ago, and subsequent “painful corrections” seen in places such as the US and UK, had left many wondering whether Australia “can escape the same outcome”.

Stevens said that nationally, Australian dwelling prices have already declined to about where they were in 2002, and went on to discuss some of the issues associated with attempting to compare our property market with overseas examples.

While he conceded it was “a very dangerous idea to think that dwelling prices cannot fall; they can, and they have”, Stevens also concluded “historical or international comparisons, to the extent they can be made, do not constitute defi nitive evidence of an imminent slump”, and that the market elements the RBA would look for as signalling this are “less in evidence now than fi ve years ago”.

“Dwelling prices have already declined, relative to income, and it is in fact not obvious that they are particularly high compared with most countries. Housing ‘affordability’ has improved signifi cantly; over 99 per cent of bank-held mortgages are being serviced fully,” Stevens said.

The March NAB State Economic update found despite state housing markets weakening through 2011, “mortgage arrears have not ticked up in any major way”, meaning “there is no evidence of widespread forced sales” or the

economic or labour market conditions that would drive them.

“In other words, the current pull-back in the housing market is largely a cyclical phenomenon,” it said. As well as market confi dence and regional economic conditions, in Queensland this is linked to slow population growth and recent weak construction activity.

The latter appears to be improving, with the Urban Development Institute of Australia reporting a 6.8 per cent increase in the value of residential building work done over the June quarter, following on from the fi ve per cent rise in March 2012 recorded by the ABS.

Another key indicator of housing demand is home loan approvals, and in August Australia’s largest mortgage broker, AFG, recorded its highest level of approvals since March 2009. The three-and-a-half-year high is a 10 per cent increase on the previous month’s fi gures (where approvals unexpectedly dropped one per cent nationwide) and a 7.4 per cent increase on August 2011.

While the nationwide level of approvals has fl uctuated in the fi rst half of 2012, the July data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows a growth of just over two per cent from the historically low levels seen in the same month last year. Nationwide fi gures for August won’t be released until later in the year, but given the strong performance of AFG – which provides a fi fth of Australia’s brokers with access to lending institutions – there is reason to hope these will again show modest growth, indicating more buyers

are gearing up to enter the property market.This may be because, despite popular

conceptions, in purely economic terms housing is reasonably affordable at the moment. According to Stevens, the “repayment on a new loan on a median-priced house as a share of average income is now at its lowest for a decade” (discounting the emergency interest rate period of 2009). ANZ found that while median house prices have increased at a rate almost 50 per cent higher than that of median household incomes since the mid 1980s, when today’s lower interest rates are factored in “the average household’s purchasing power over the median priced home is currently almost exactly the same” as it was then.

Spring is traditionally a time when new properties come onto the market, however anecdotally many local real estate agents are reporting a shortage of stock rather than a glut. This is mostly because, when priced right, the listings they have are selling more quickly.

“Although there is not yet any upward pressure on prices, we are seeing vendor expectations in line with current market value teamed with a heavy level of buyer demand, resulting in healthy sales outcomes,” Andrew says.

However, if you’re still hung up on prices, remember Belinda Allen’s advice that housing values can vary widely depending on the region (and are extremely diffi cult to predict). As MWP reported back in March, as much as

And while the fundamentals of the Queensland market remain strong, this multibillion-dollar project will create local increases in population growth, construction activity and hopefully consumer sentiment – all of which are key to the healthy recovery of a property industry.

grandfather invented the product that has become an Australian icon.

“He was the grandfather I never knew but I now feel like I know him incredibly well,” says Callister.

“More importantly, I consider him to be one of our great Australians in every sense of the word.”

Callister began his quest to uncover the story after discovering a collection of more than 50 letters and a Second World War fl ight logbook that had been collected by his grandfather and stored in an old trunk.

He says the story parallels some of the major events from the 20th century – the two World wars, the Great Depression and the polio epidemic – all of which shaped his grandfather’s destiny.

However, it was more than 15 years before Vegemite started to become accepted by the nation.

“It was particularly unpopular and at one time they changed the name to Parwill – if Marmite, Parwill,” Callister says.

“For years, more jars were coming back to the factory than were going out. The public just couldn’t stomach it and the head salesman didn’t help – he hated the stuff.

“My grandfather thought he could even be looking for a new job.”

Callister says his grandfather’s dedication and commitment to the nutritional value of his product, in particular the Vitamin B it was rich in, became Cyril’s life’s work until he died in 1949.

Jamie says it’s a remarkable story for all Australians whether you liked the black stuff or not.

“Vegemite already has a clear place in Australian households, however, I hope now when Australians are putting Vegemite on their toast they will know its story, its place in history and who invented it,” Callister says.

The Queensland launch of the book will be held at the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club on Tuesday October 30. For information and bookings call 5447 4433.

Patience please on Sunshine MotorwaySpeed restrictions on a busy section of Sunshine Motorway will remain at least until the completion of road work to begin next month.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokeswoman says the 80km/h limit in place for a section of motorway between Coolum and Marcoola is the result of road surface repair work.

The section has been subject to reduced speeds for at least two months.

“The most damaged section must remain at 80km/h for safety reasons until permanent resurfacing works can be undertaken. These works will start next month,” she says. “Changed traffi c conditions or partially completed works may

require lower speed limits even when there are no roadworkers present.

She says many factors, including lane width and pavement composition, determine speed restrictions. “We remind motorists to please obey the speed limit and drive to changed traffi c conditions at all times,” she says.

The Living Choice Kawana Island leisure centre was transformed into a diff erent world where once again people danced to that special 1960s beat. Colourful lights also danced across the walls to the music of The Kinks, The Searchers, The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Beatles and many more.

Larva lamps pulsated to the music throughout the night with each table illuminated by the obligatory “candle in a bo le”. Posters from a bygone age adorned the walls and the room was full of young-at-heart, vibrant people. It was truly fabulous, or should I say fab!

Male residents were unrecognisable – they not only had hair, it was long, ed with bandanas and not grey.

They wore mul -coloured shirts, unbu oned to the waist, and “ban the bomb” necklaces and beads. The

female residents were even more gorgeous than the men. Some dressed as hippies, others had incredible short mini-skirts complete with white boots and long eyelashes.

The food also returned to the six es with plenty of diff erent nibbles on cocktail s cks (including cheese and pineapple), cheese and onion “crisps”, nuts, cheese straws, sausage rolls and a variety of pressed meats.

The “Retro Happening” was a huge success and each me another six es hit was played, not only could you understand the words, you knew what was coming next, such as: “sweets for my sweet, sugar for my *****.” So remember; the next me you are in our village you may meet “gentle people with fl owers in their hair”.

People in remote parts of Victoria will miss out on text message alerts about

natural disasters because of poor mobile phone reception, the state’s emergency services commissioner says.

Optus has reached an agreement with state and federal governments which will mean its customers receive an SMS warning on their mobile phones if they’re in a region hit by fi res or fl ood.

Optus is the third major service provider to join the National Emergency Alert System, with Telstra customers to receive the warnings from this November while Optus and Vodafone customers will receive them from November 2013.

The location-based emergency alert system was a key recommendation of the royal commission into Victoria’s 2009 Black Saturday bushfi res which killed 173 people.

But Emergency Services Commissioner Michael Hallowes, who led the negotiations with the telcos, warned that the system should not be solely relied on.

“If there isn’t coverage then there won’t be an alert signal either,” he says.

“Emergency alerts will only be as good as the mobile phone coverage.”

NZ TO REMAIN NUKE-FREE

New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key is promising there will be

no backdown on the country’s nuclear-free status as part of renewed co-operation with the United States.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta visited New Zealand last week, and raised the possibility of having US troops based there.

“If New Zealand feels that’s something they would support or want, we certainly are more than ready to engage them in that kind of relationship. We think it would be very helpful,” Panetta told TVNZ’s Q&A program.

During his visit, Panetta announced New Zealand navy vessels will be able to visit Defence Department and Coastguard facilities in the US and around the world.

Key has also invited a US Coastguard vessel to visit New Zealand – as long as it’s not nuclear-powered.

“There’ll be no change to New Zealand’s anti-nuclear legislation, no change to the provisions about boats that would come to New Zealand,” he told TVNZ’s Breakfast.

Restrictions on talks between offi cials and joint military exercises are also being lifted.

The moves are seen as a thawing of relations strained for decades by New Zealand’s anti-nuclear policies. AAP

T H E I R O W N A quarter of a century ago an Australian rock

band took its music to the outback.What Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett

learned on that 1986 Blackfella/Whitefella tour still drives him in his job today. The federal schools minister has a “real burning desire” to help improve the lot of young indigenous people.

“When I fi rst travelled into remote areas and met many Aboriginal people in communities … I saw how important and crucial, in fact, education was to those communities,” he says.

communities. Just a week ago he was in Wadeye, near Darwin, opening a new boarding facility the government funded to help ensure the kids there attend school.

When Garrett was interviewed for this story, he was hosting a work experience student as part of the Learn Earn Legend! program for indigenous students in years 11 and 12. But for all the ministerial attention to indigenous education, the indicators show not much is improving.

NAPLAN results from 2011 show indigenous students’ results continue to be substantially lower than non-indigenous students across all ages. The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) has targets to halve the gap for indigenous students in reading, writing and numeracy achievement by 2018, and to halve the gap of

year 12 attainment rates by 2020. However, the most recent COAG Reform Council progress report, released almost a year ago, warned it would be diffi cult to meet the fi rst target with states and territories falling behind in early years.

The same report also found school attendance rates continued to fall in almost every jurisdiction.

Upon releasing the report, council chair Paul McClintock said the declining attendance was among some of the most confronting pieces of data he’d ever seen. “There’s not the slightest possibility of closing gaps … if that number of children have opted out of the system,” he said.

Another COAG committee, which reviewed government service provision, released a report this month showing $2.99 was spent on schooling per head of indigenous population for every $1 spent per non-indigenous person. The almost $2 gap is partly explained by a higher proportion of indigenous people being of school age than the general population.

Garrett acknowledges there’s more to do, but he was keen to highlight some schools and students were doing really well. “We cannot in any way have another generation of Aboriginal students in Australia not perform to their capacity, not come through school with the means of working and learning and of providing,” he says. “We need to have a number of key things in place in every school setting.

“We know what they are but we need to make sure they’re in place and that the effortis continued.”

These include strong and committed leadership from schools and communities, personalised learning plans and setting high expectations for students. Garrett points to the fi rst national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education plan, agreed to by all governments, as giving a solid template on how to proceed.

Indigenous education expert Dr Bill Fogarty, from the ANU National Centre for Indigenous Studies, says community engagement and making education relevant are important factors.

International research shows test-driven agendas and programs unconnected to children’s real lives are particularly unproductive for

indigenous students. “We need to refocus on programs and policy that really engage indigenous communities in the education process,” Fogarty says.

The question of community engagement can be a diffi cult one for governments to resolve. Garrett has seen how excited and proud communities are when their young people do well and become leaders. The minister says he makes it his “constant mantra” to reinforce the importance of education to parents.

And he says governments can give schools and principals tools to help them engage parents and local communities.

Fogarty says low attendance rates often indicate the education on offer is not seen as valuable or useful. But punitive responses, like aligning parental welfare payments to kids’ school attendance, are ultimately only short-term fi xes.

“A better policy approach is to invest in and support place-based strategies that give education a point in the local context and link to opportunities

We need to refocus on programs that really engage indigenous communities

in the wider world,” he says. “This also means supporting programs that value indigenous languages and that link to local people’s economic and social development aspirations.

“That way you make education important for everyone involved and provide real pathways for the kids’ futures.”

Garrett agrees on the importance of recognising culture, saying it should be placed on an equal footing with literacy and numeracy in schools. “One shouldn’t be seen in isolation to the other; they play different roles but they are absolutely crucial,” he says.

“A strong connection to culture is to make sure that people within the school setting are able to be acknowledged and taught in a way which refl ects this experience they bring with them.”

Ultimately, Garrett believes while it will be a struggle, work is in train to “get on top of decades of challenge”. “We now need to keep our foot on that accelerator pedal; we need to hold hands with others who are part of this journey and we need to hang on, hold on and keep going until we all get there,” he says.

Five stocks that reported encouraging results and are well placed to continue growing into 2013 include Domino’s Pizza (DMP), Reckon Limited (RKN), Magellan Financial (MFG), Slater & Gordon (SGH) and Super Retail Group (SUL).

Zeroing in on Domino’s Pizza Enterprises (DMP) we can see very encouraging signs after its recent results. DMP has continued to deliver strong earnings growth with FY12 net profi t after tax, growing 25 per cent and net cash doubling to $26.3 million. This has been a result of an extension of its market leadership in Australia and NZ, coupled with long-term upside from its European expansion. This provides confi dence that the business will continue to deliver our forecast 17 per cent EPS compound annual growth.

A FUTURE-PROOF INDUSTRY

the impact that the growth of the online world has had on traditional sectors such as retail and manufacturing. Local business owners fi nd it tough competing with manufacturers and retailers in other parts of the nation and overseas, but a localised industry that can’t be outsourced to China or bought from the US will benefi t the Sunshine Coast region and economy for years into the future.

Australia’s hospitals have always had an important place in our healthcare system and the importance will continue in an increasingly globalised world. Rising income levels, better standards of living and technological advances mean we are all living longer, and an ageing population will increase demand for healthcare services into the future.

Populations will always gravitate to infrastructure and services, and a health precinct, such as the one now sprouting in Kawana, will attract growth to a region.

A recent report by analysts IBISWorld shows that Australia’s

general hospitals industry encompasses more than 1300 hospitals and close to 85,000 beds. IBISWorld expects the industry to generate revenue of more than $53 billion in 2012-2013. This shows growth of about 4.2 per cent on the previous fi nancial year. And that growth is expected to continue into the future – IBISWorld predicts an annualised increase of more than four per cent for fi ve years.

The growth in the industry is attributed to the increasing Australian population, an ageing population and advances in medical technologies. It also helps that the Federal Government is stepping up its contribution to hospital funding. From 2014-15, the government contribution to growth funding for hospitals will step up to 45 per cent, increasing to 50 per cent in 2017-18.

According to IBISWorld, the hospitals industry is considered to show low market share concentration. The industry’s top three players are Metropolitan Health Service, Ramsay Health Care and Healthscope.

Ramsay Health Care was established in Sydney almost half a century ago, and now operates 117 hospitals and day surgery facilities in our nation and overseas. It now has an interest in our region.

Ramsay Health Care will own and operate the Sunshine Coast’s new private hospital, which is due to open next year.

Monitoring the fl ow-on effect

The Sunshine Coast Business Council (SCBC) is the leading advocacy group representing business on the Coast.

In August the SCBC held a forum on the ripple effect from the Kawana health precinct for business in the region, uncovering challenges and opportunities for the Sunshine Coast.

The forum identifi ed six key sectors that will be the main benefi ciaries of the precinct’s economic ripple effect. E-health and wellbeing is perhaps the most obvious sector, along with supply chain industries, education and construction. But tourism and transport will also get a boost, according to forum attendees. Likely impediments to success, and the ways to address these impediments, were also discussed.

The business council will be keeping a close eye on the Kawana development and will report back regularly to its members. An update is scheduled for October 25, and My Weekly Preview will keep readers posted on news from the SCBC.

12 TIPS TO BEAT PROCRASTINATION

Procrastination torpedoes productivity, harms self-esteem and is a major source of stress.

Piers Steel, social scientist, professor and author of the book The Procrastination Equation, explains that procrastination occurs when our logical planning brain, the prefrontal cortex, intends to do something but that plan gets overridden by our more powerful, impulsive and emotional brain, the limbic system, because it has a competing desire.

If you tend to put things off, try these strategies and waste time no longer:

1. Place a physical ‘impulse interrupter’ on procrastination devices like TVs and game consoles. For example, tape a note to your TV remote control that says, “Can you really afford to turn this on?”

2. Set a timer. Our brains tend to overestimate the amount of time it will take to complete a task. Set the timer on your smartphone and see if you can beat the clock.

3. Eliminate alerts. Vibrating phones and email dings are effectively conditioning you to procrastinate and/or interrupt more productive work. Turn them off.

4. Pay for blocking software. Software programs like Concentrate for Macs and Freedom for Macs and PCs are worth their weight in gold.

5. Stand up and do breathing exercises for two to fi ve minutes. Shallow breathing and/or holding your breath, both of which people are likely to do when watching TV or while hunched over a computer, triggers your body’s fi ght-or-fl ight refl ex and effectively shuts down your prefrontal cortex.

6. Keep impulse-drivers out of your environment. Have a set time and day once a week to give your environment a clean sweep. The less mess around you, the greater the chances

you will be able to concentrate.7. Reward the completion of small goals – this

can be the key to accomplishing bigger ones. 8. Designate an anti-procrastinating buddy and

call him/her when you need help. The quick pep talk is likely to increase your motivation levels – and increase your chances of being productive.

9. Develop and repeat an if-then statement. Research is emerging showing that simple if-then statements are very effective at helping you follow through on good intentions. For example, if you have to get a writing project done, create a statement that says, “If I fi nd myself procrastinating by (pick your most frequent poison), then I will stand up, do deep-breathing exercises and turn my attention to (the task I was putting off).”

10. Identify your peak hour. Determine what that time is for you and do work that requires concentration during that time window.

11. Break down problems. Doing one activity at a time can increase your chance of successfully overcoming your procrastination.

12. Make a commitment to someone that you will get a task done by a certain date that is well in advance of the actual deadline. Accountability is a powerful driver.

THE SIN OF SERVING WINE AT THE WRONG TEMPERATURE

PREVIEW‘Education Through Libation’ is Dr Plonk’s motto. He has spent most of his legal drinking age life around wine, and through his many wine travels is focused on the fun, frivolity and the demystifi cation of wine.

You don’t have to be a weather forecaster or a doctor to appreciate

the signifi cance of temperature. It is the same with wine. There is nothing more exasperating than getting wine at the wrong temperature (except having no wine at all).

Now I am not a wine snob. Unfortunately, as soon as you say that it implies you are. Just like when someone says, “I’m not a coffee snob,

or I’m not racist”, I love all wines, but when a sexy white wine is served up colder than a spinster at a singles dance, it makes me hot under the collar. And the opposite situation is true with respect to reds

served up hotter than a mother-in-

law’s tongue.

Chowing down 80 metres undergroundAward-winning chef Niklas Ekblom has opened a new restaurant in Finland that turns the idea of “pop-up” eateries upside-down: his restaurant is 80 metres underground. Discerning food lovers are being served salted salmon, veal tenderloin, snails cooked in Pernod, and apple crumble in the ‘pop-down’ restaurant in a limestone mine in the small, southern town of Lohja, 60 kilometres west of Helsinki. A four-course evening meal costs about 128 euro (about $160), and includes drinks and transportation down to the mine and back up.

Wine is about aromatics and structure and these are adversely affected by unsuitable temperatures. If the wine is too cold, you can’t appreciate the full experience of its beautiful aromas. It is often said the worse the wine the colder it should be served. Tea is a great example of what temperature does to tannin and hence structure. Hot tea is not as astringent as cold tea and that is the same link with red wine. You want that structure to give the wine body.

Ideally, whites should be between six and eight degrees. Reds should be about 16 degrees for lighter reds like pinot noir and 20 to 22 degrees for heavy reds. These temperature ranges make a mockery of serving wine at room temperature in summer in Queensland. The room temperature concept is a European tradition where the climate is a little milder. You can see why you should pop your reds in the fridge for 10 to 20 minutes before serving over summer and don’t over-ice the whites.

I have seen a few people put ice cubes in their wine. I am not sure what is going through their mind but I have a mate who refuses to take good wine to his in-laws, as the mother-in-law immediately tosses in three ice cubes no matter how good the wine is. In fact, he has told me he’s gotten the cheapest cask wine he can fi nd and whacks it in a bottle especially for her. Clever and getting kudos. Wait until his wife reads this!

Champagne doesn’t have to be ice-cold either. Most of the champagne houses suggest about four degrees for serving. Some of the cheaper sparkling wines probably should be icy cold but you can always disguise them by adding a liqueur like Cassis (blueberry) or Midori and give it a fancy title like a ‘fi zzy gel renepo’.

Forgetting about the complexities, wine is meant to be enjoyed (responsibly) with company and food.

According to little Miss Plonk, even weather forecasters like to go to bars – isobars!

NO SLOWING DOWN FOR DAZZA

AUSSIE music legend Daryl Braithwaite likes nothing more than stopping by the beach for a few waves when he’s

here on the Coast.But when he hits Caloundra next month for

a one-night-only concert there will be no time for play. For a man who has enjoyed one of the longest careers a musician could hope for, a busy schedule beckons.

“But I must add that I will be up that way, in Noosa, in November for a little break around the time I plan to go to see Coldplay in Brisbane. Those few days off in Noosa will suffi ce,” says Braithwaite.

With four decades’ worth of hits to his name, both as a solo artist and member of Sherbet, Braithwaite shows no signs of slowing. He’s set to release a six-track EP next month, with at least two songs from that release making their way into the Caloundra concert line-up on October 4.

His solo and band hits over the years include Howzat, All I Do, As the Days Go By and of course the track that still fetches the highest number of requests today.

“If we didn’t play Horses I think we’d be lynched,” Braithwaite tells MWP.

“If I retire I’d go mad. I don’t know what I’d do. It’s like many people – when it comes to retirement some embrace it, and some would say they don’t know what they’d do if they weren’t working.

“I tell my son that I am lucky to be able to do something that started out as a whim and a hobby and has become a career.

“First and foremost I’m just grateful that it has gone on that long, but I think a lot of it has to do with chemistry of the band. We’ve all been together for a long time… so we all get on really well, as well as the boys in Sherbet did,” he says.

“I think it’s passion as well, I still have a love of playing live.”

It handles better than just about any Lexus we’ve ever tested.

Because the GS450h can operate solely as an electric vehicle, it truly is whisper-quiet, but even when the V6

pursuit of the Germans.Ever since Toyota launched its own

luxury brand, the marque has had Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi in its sights. And it’s done a pretty decent job of it, sneaking closer and closer to the standard set by these German thoroughbreds. But there remains one glaring exception – the executive sedan class. So with greatness in its sights, Lexus recently rolled out an all-new version of the GS. At very least, it’s a great improvement.

We started in the GS350 F-Sport ($106,996 on road) and later tested the hybrid-powered GS450h Sports Luxury ($128,438). The Hybrid can be had for as ‘little’ as $105,998, although the additional $20-grand is money well spent – more luxury, more gadgets, noticeably more power and a greatly reduced thirst (a staggering 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres).

The previous GS was comfortable, but a disappointingly soft driving

kicks in the cabin is a tranquil place. It accelerates with oodles of punch from just about any speed.

The front end is all air intakes, driving lights and spoilers. It looks sharp, but I wonder whether it’s trying just a bit too hard. There’s no doubt Lexus has come a long way from those early days, when the fi rst ES model looked like a glorifi ed version of that era’s Toyota Camry. This latest model GS could scarcely be further from that.

NEW PEUGEOT IMPRESSES Peugeot has released its all-new 208 range, which it says combines style and value for money with a welcome return to Peugeot dynamic handling DNA.

The new Peugeot 208 is available in a choice of two body styles, three engine choices and four equipment levels.

“The all-new 208 hatch boasts a new level of functionality with its class-leading seven-inch touch screen, outstanding dynamics and world-fi rst ‘heads up’ driving position that offers a new level of safety behind the wheel,” says Peugeot Automobiles Australia general manager/director Bill Gillespie.

The Active 1.2-litre opens the range with an entry price of $18,490 RRP. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth and USB, body coloured mirrors, power windows and mesh grille and a raft of safety features.

thousands of home listings in more than 85 countries, has now been launched in Australia.

The new site, a click away at global.remax.com, is a complement to remax.com.au and allows consumers to search for properties to buy and rent around the world.

RE/MAX Australia managing director Michael Davoren says the company’s clients called for a “comprehensive resource for international properties”. “We’re seeing an increasing number of foreign buyers looking for property in Australia and vice versa,” he says. “Global.remax.com is essentially a one-stop source for residential and commercial real estate, no matter where you live. Australia is now a focal point in the global real estate market and historically our industry has been a little non-engaged in that space, especially considering more than one in fi ve people in Australia do not have English as their fi rst language at home.”

Translatable in more than 31 languages in more than 85 countries, the global site also includes a world property channel, a news feed for the latest news and events, and a currency converter.

“Consumers have an appetite for a website that gives them not only the home listings from around the world, but in their own language and in their own currency,” says Davoren. For RE/MAX agents, “it means more exposure for their listings to consumers around the globe at no cost, as well as more opportunities for cross-border RE/MAX referrals”.

Award winner now at PlatinumIt’s often said the kitchen is the most important room in a home, which gives new local agent Karen Cleeton an edge when it comes to selling real estate.

This weekend should see waves up to the three-foot mark on the open beaches. Friday will be the pick day with a little more size in the easterly swell. However, it will be inconsistent with N/NW winds early swinging to fresh north-easterlies later. Saturday will see waves around the two-foot mark still on a small easterly swell with northerly winds tending N/NE throughout the day. Sunday will be smaller with a decrease in the swell and the winds will be swinging southerly and onshore. Friday and Saturday are looking like the best days for waves so check the pocket down to the S bends at Kawana, Yaroomba or the northern end of Sunshine. On Sunday check the open beaches for more swell but it will be onshore. Get in early, fi nd a high-tide bank in the protected corners and good surfi ng.

ESTUARY: With the rising temperatures will come the mangrove jack, fl athead and summer species with reports of larger fl athead caught in the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers, using plastics and whitebait or baby blue pilchards on small ganged hooks. Flathead over 75 centimetres must be released as they are usually females.SURF: As the water is so clear, whiting and bream can be seen in the close-in gutters. Plenty of bait schools mean the bigger species are a bit fi ckle as they are so well fed. Try shiny chrome lures retrieved fast to get their attention. OFFSHORE: Plenty of bait means the tuna are very active in close to the coastline. Water temperatures are around 20 degrees. The lead-up to the next full moon should bring on the bigger catches of snapper, sweetlip, pearl perch with a few coral trout the bonus in the last week.FRESHWATER: Head inland to Somerset and Borumba dams for huge catches of red claw caught in opera house traps, four traps per person allowed. There are bonus catches of yellow belly at most dams.
