Classic Contemporary Designs For Queenslander homes

Welcome to the last edition of MWP before Christmas Day. I cant quite believe how it has crept up on us so quickly, but the silly season is here and we are off on holidays so next week there will be no issue of My Weekly Preview for you to enjoy over your Friday morning cuppa. But dont despair were hoping you can make this issue last, and with this weeks cover story written by Dorothy Drane, there is plenty to savour.

Dot is reminiscing again and, of course, this time its all about Christmas. We love it when Dot writes a cover story as she has a great way of capturing the experiences of days gone by, and though she and I belong to different generations Dots a baby boomer, I am a member of generation X when Dot starts pondering the way things were, it always makes me smile. This week shes returned to a time of

real-life Chrissy trees, simple gifts and stinking hot roasts to recall what a Sunshine Coast Christmas used to be like. I hope you get as much joy from it as I did its over the page.

Still in the sentimental mood, this week, on page 36, we have a 10-page special feature on the Mooloolaba Surf Club. The club and the building that houses it have gone through a few major transformations over the years, and to celebrate its latest incarnation, we have taken a look through the history books and bring you this celebration of Mooloolaba and its clubbies check it out on page 36.

Our property cover story has some fantastic homes and investments for your Christmas stocking okay so nobodys stocking is that big, but I encourage you to check it out as there are some great homes for sale at the moment. That is in My Property Preview, on page 50.

  • Its the smell in the air that gives it away, not the decorations turning up in the shops a week earlier every year or the canned carols playing in supermarkets.

Its that scent that rises from the earth after a hot day, one that is often amplifi ed by a solid storm to cool everything down in the late afternoon.

Unlike wine, it cant be described as woody with citrus undertones (although it probably has both) and not even rainforest incense or the Sunday smell of grass clippings will do it.

Its simply the smell of Queensland summer that turns up to announce Christmas is on its way each December. I learnt to identify it as the smell of summer many years ago when walking through a London park one June. I observed that I could smell Christmas in the air.

That, my friend, is the smell of summer so I cant imagine why you would think of Christmas, my British pal replied.

And so it is that the smell of Christmas is here again, announcing the festive season far more effectively than the vision of silver, green and gold tinsel, the sound of jingling bells, the taste of a mince pie or the touch of a switch that turns a family home into a wonderland of coloured lights and dancing snowmen.

Next to arrive on a sultry summer evening are the Christmas beetles, once mostly a shimmering cream but now more commonly a dull brown, but either way, beetles that know how to cling to clothing and buzz the air around Christmas time.

The decorations might have become too elaborate, the range of gifts too extravagant, the want-list too long, the food too rich and the demands too stressful, but there are still plenty of Christmas romantics who just want to recapture the wonder and magic of those special couple of weeks between school break-ups

and unwrapping presents under a pine tree that is already shedding its needles on the fl oor.

And because no matter how hard we try, we just cant quite manage to fi nd that sense of something really special year after year, many become cynical.

With the exception of those who havent yet reached double fi gures, theres a common sigh of Christmas just isnt what it used to be, or I hate Christmas because its never what it promises, or Christmas has just become another day, or its full of unrealistic expectations, or everyone has to spend too much money buying things they dont really need or even want.

As a baby boomer, its kind of amusing to hear the laments for the good old days of Christmas past from

gen Y. Although less than two decades ago, it was already a struggle to fi nd something to make their Christmas special and different from the rest of the year.

I once even went into Christmas with the credo less is

more to see if that could set it apart from the rest of the year. It didnt work but clearly something did as there is still a modicum of sentimentality.

And even though leg ham, cream biscuits, soft drink and lollies are no longer something that come but once a year at Christmas, and despite gifts no longer coming just from Santa alone (at last count there had to be stockings fi lled with something interesting, not just plastic junk or chocolate, plus a present from Santa, plus a present from mum and dad), Im happy to say there were some things that made Christmas exciting.

Strangely enough though, it wasnt the expensive gifts or the holidays or the hype, but the simplest things that gave all three of my 20-something children a fond reminiscence of childhood Christmas. It was just a very ordinary old Christmas tree that had no price tag.

    [ C O V E R S T O R Y ]

Dorothy Drane is reminiscing about Christmas past, and it goes a little something like this.

    continued over >

It couldnt go up at the beginning of December because it was a real one. Even if it went up the week before Christmas, it was still struggling to look alive on Christmas Day.

It didnt look anything like the trees in the catalogues, movies or books. It looked daggy with straggling uneven branches that regularly dropped the decorations on to the fl oor as it wilted. But it had two things in its favour: it smelt like Christmas, spreading its piney scent around the house, but most importantly, it was an adventure.

Dad would hitch up the trailer and the kids would pile in the back as we cruised down our quiet Palmwoods road looking for the most shapely slash pine growing a dime a dozen on the roadside. This was quite a selection process.

It had to be the right height (not too tall), have plenty of branches to hold decorations and be thick and bushy. There would be endless arguments about which was the best until fi nally, out came the chainsaw and the tree was dropped into the trailer for the short ride back home.

There was a search for a new trick each year in the quest to prolong the lifespan of the perfect tree few ever worked. The tree went up in an old paint drum fi lled with dirt and then carefully

wrapped with Christmas paper. It didnt look at all trimmed like a Christmas card tree, but it was all ours and it smelt just right.

This was the stuff of memories, not in the 50s or 60s, but in the 90s and 00s.

A simple Christmas ritual that still has an important place in the memories of three young adults. Piling into the car that same night to drive around looking at the Christmas lights in all the nearby streets was similarly etched into young minds. Another ritual that came at no cost. And its only now, a big 22-year-old boy with the obligatory tattoo will confess that he was utterly convinced for years that when I pointed to the stars and kept saying are you sure you cant see him, there he is, look just there, he really and truly did see that sleigh belting past the Southern Cross.

Its these little simple memories that make Christmas special.

Like my own children, Ive long since forgotten what presents I unwrapped. But I do remember the big green canvas from which teachers distributed red ice-blocks on the last day of school; the watermelon that was distributed as a treat (I always felt cheated on this one as I never did like watermelon), and the

Wimmers soft drink truck delivering yellow creaming soda, lime cooler and cherry cheer in a crate. It arrived a few days before Christmas but, like the plums, was forbidden fruit until the big day.

The chickens came fresh from the farm gate at Eastons in School Road, Maroochydore. One year, Jack Vermeulen from the Windmill Bakery at the top of Nambour baked a crispy crust for the ham. That was really special.

The Co-op in Currie Street had big tins of Arnotts cream biscuits, sealed within dark blue paper, that were sold just for the Christmas season.

Lunch wasnt a sensible cold seafood and salad or a sherry-drenched trifl e, but a hot roast followed by a pud that might have a sixpence or a threepence in it if you were lucky. After decimal currency arrived in 1966, you had to give the coin back, even if you did fi nd it, because the new currency couldnt stand the baking.

The house was decorated with coloured paper streamers and balloons; tinsel was a rare commodity, its use restricted to the Christmas tree. Christmas cards actually arrived by post and were pegged on pieces of string to become another form of seasonal decoration. There were

    TENSIONS RISE OVER NOOSA

Queenslands Boundary Commissioner has recommended Noosa residents go to a referendum to determine whether the northern end of the Coast will split from Sunshine Coast Council.

The decision has raised concerns a vote in favour of de-amalgamation will come at substantial cost to all Sunshine Coast residents.

Queensland Treasury Corporation will be the independent umpire, overseeing the costs of de-amalgamation, which it has estimated at about $13.6 million initially, amounting to an extra $260 per ratepayer in the fi rst year.

There will be ongoing costs of an extra $142 per ratepayer in the following years, rising with infl ation.

The fi gure is about $2 million less than the Sunshine Coast Council-commissioned Deloittes report and reportedly six times higher than the fi gure put forward by the Noosa Independence Alliance.

    [ L O C A L N E W S ]

Noosa could soon go it alone if 50 per cent of residents vote to de-amalgamate

SAVE EMILY BIG BREAKFASTA Big Breakfast fundraiser will be held for Beerwahs Emily Jayne Madden on Tuesday December 18.Emily has been diagnosed with Lymes disease and the local community is rallying to raise money to send her to Germany for treatment.

The breakfast will be held at the Caloundra RSL Function Centre from 7am to 8.30am. Tickets are $60. Call 5491 6584 or 5494 0010 to register.

GET $1000 OFF YOUR RATESSunshine Coast ratepayers have the chance to win a discount of up to $1000 off their January rates bill by signing up to receive their rates notice by email.

Finance and water portfolio councillor Chris Thompson says the $1000 prize is the fi rst step in a campaign to encourage ratepayers to receive electronic rates notices.

Visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and sign up for emailed rates by January 4, 2013 to be in the running.

CHECK OUT JOHNS STORIESJohns Stories, a pictorial style and sculpture exhibition of indigenous artist John Murray, will be showcased at Caloundra Regional Gallery until January 13.

Murray loves storytelling through his art; his pictorial style and whimsical sculptures transform the traditional creation stories that have been passed down to him.

Caloundra Regional Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

MOOLOOLABA BOAT PARADEGet into the festive spirit with the Mooloolaba Christmas Boat Parade this Saturday, December 15 from 12.30 to 8.30pm.

The celebrations, organised by the Mooloolaba Yacht Club, centre around The Wharf, Mooloolaba and Helen Penny Gardens.

Grab your picnic blanket and fi nd a viewing spot along the Mooloolah River to watch the boats tizzed up with Christmas decorations and sparkling lights.

    News Previews

Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says while the vote is an important one for the people of Noosa, it has ramifi cations for all Coast residents.

I think its important for the people who get the vote and those who dont to understand exactly what the costs are and how they will be affected, Jamieson says.

Queensland Treasury Corporation estimates the councils projected $31 million operating surplus over the next fi ve years would result in a nearly $45 million defi cit to be shared by the two councils.

At the end of the fi ve-year QTC forecast period, the debt of the current council is estimated around $260 million, while the defi cit of the two combined councils is expected to be about $315 million.

Jamieson expressed concern about issues raised in the boundary commissioners report, such as the fi nancial stability of both councils, the ability to deliver key regional projects such as the airport expansion and development of the

Maroochydore CBD, the impact on the levels of service on tourism and the councils reduced capacity to contribute to the regions economic development.

Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli says the government promised it would give communities the opportunity to vote where theres a chance a viable council could be created.

No doubt there are costs, but if the community feels that the pain in the pocket is worth the price for an independent council area, theyll get their old council back, Crisafulli says.

Jamieson says he was elected as

mayor of the whole Sunshine Coast and the council team will continue to focus on creating investment and job opportunities for the region.

This work is so important it simply cant be put on hold and we will continue to get on with the job of creating opportunities for people on the Sunshine Coast.

The council respects the state governments decision to enable a referendum and will co-operate fully with the process.

Councils position has been clear on de-amalgamation it would prefer to stay as one united council for one united region.

New board members for the Sunshine Coasts peak business body are expected to strengthen the position of local business and push for key economic developments within the region.

Representatives from the health, tourism and development sectors have joined the board of the Sunshine Coast Business Council.

They include the CEO of Sunshine Destinations Ltd, Steve Cooper, co-founder and CEO of the Sunshine Coast Haematology and Oncology Clinic, Sandra Reardon, and chair of the Sunshine Coast Committee of the Property Council of Australia, Peter Bolton-Hall.

The appointments were confi rmed at the business councils recent annual general meeting, where the nine board nominees were elected unopposed.

SCBC chair Sandy Zubrinich will continue in her role for another 12 months and board member Michael Hopkins will assume the position of deputy chair.

Zubrinich welcomed the new members, saying their skills and expertise will help the boards efforts to promote economic development in key industry sectors at a critical time in the regions history.

We have focused much of our energy this year on the four key transformational projects: the new CBD, the hospital and health hub, the airport expansion and the technology hub at Sippy Downs, she says.

These projects are expected to attract unprecedented local investment, create much-needed sustainable employment opportunities.

Thousands of people attended the funeral of Daniel Morcombe last Friday, honouring the Coast teenager who went missing from a bus stop at Woombye nine years ago.

The service began with a eulogy typical of the grace Daniels parents have shown during the nine years since he was taken while on his way to buy Christmas presents.

His simple white casket, adorned with red roses, was carried from the church at his former school, Siena Catholic College, to the strains of Elton Johns song Daniel.

His parents, Bruce and Denise, kept their promise to their son a dignifi ed funeral service that focused on his legacy, not the evil act that cut his life short.

The Morcombes have become tireless advocates for child safety, through the foundation they established in Daniels name.

Determined the service would not be mired in sadness, they asked mourners to wear a hint of red, in honour of Daniel, and a smile.

The 13-year-olds casket was driven under police escort from the church, while hundreds formed a guard of honour for a boy remembered as loving but tough, quiet, yet mischievous.

A committal hearing for Brett Peter Cowan, the man accused of murdering Daniel, is due to resume in February. AAP

PM voted Australias most inf uential female

Almost one million Australians are suffering from an eating disorder, costing the nation a staggering $69.7 billion this year, new research shows.

The Paying the Price report, to be launched by the Butterfl y Foundation on Tuesday, covers the prevalence and social and economic costs of eating disorders in Australia.

Until now, we had no idea that the socioeconomic impact of eating disorders was comparable to around two per cent of Australias GDP, says CEO of the Butterfl y Foundation Christine Morgan.

The landmark report estimates there are 913,986 Australians with an eating disorder, with Deloitte Access Economics putting the total social and economic cost at $69.7 billion this year.

    [ N A T I O N A L N E W S ]

The report suggests mortality rates are almost twice as high for people with eating disorders than in the general population. And it estimates that up to 1828 people died from eating disorders in 2012 (515 males and 1313 females).

The number of annual deaths, for eating disorders, is higher than the 2011 Australian road death toll, Morgan says.

The Butterfl y Foundation is urging state, territory and federal governments to resolve the ongoing issue of mental health funding.

It says acute sector and community service providers need to have the necessary protocols and specialist knowledge for early identifi cation and care for people with eating disorders, and private health insurance coverage needs to be extended. AAP

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she had no inkling of the effect her so-called misogyny speech aimed at Opposition Leader Tony Abbott would have.

She made the comments after being voted the most infl uential female voice in Australia by Fairfax Medias Daily Life website.

The site lauded her for the now infamous speech in October, saying it was a watershed moment for Australian women.

Our fi rst female Prime Minister had kept silent on sexism directed at her and entrenched in Australian politics since her election, but when she spoke it wasnt just Australia, but the world, that stopped and listened, a statement on their website said.

But Gillard, in an accompanying interview with Fairfax, had no idea how much attention the world would pay to the speech until Treasurer Wayne

Swan told her. I thought I had given a hard-hitting speech but I didnt have any inkling of the effect of it, she said.

I said to Wayne, Oh, were going to have to sit here now and listen to all these bloody speeches in reply. I should get my chief of staff to bring some correspondence so at least I can be getting on with something.

And Wayne, with a slightly odd look on his face said, You cant really give the I accuse speech and settle back and do your correspondence.

She said women had shown their support of the speech by sending her notes and presents.

Media commentator Anne Summers was voted the second most infl uential woman in Australia, followed by social commentator, writer and lecturer Jane Caro, Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick and Walkley award-winning journalist and 7.30 anchor Leigh Sales. AAP

LIFE-SIZED REPLICA OF NOAHS ARK UNVEILED

DORDRECHT, The Netherlands A full-scale replica of Noahs Ark has opened its doors to the public in The Netherlands.

Stormy weather on Monday could do nothing to dampen the good mood of its creator, Dutchman Johan Huibers. In fact, the rain was appropriate.

In the Biblical story, God orders Noah to build a boat big enough to save animals and Noahs family

while the earth is covered in an enormous fl ood.

Huibers interpreted the description given in Genesis to build his ark. It measures in at a whopping 130 metres long, 29 metres across and 23 metres high.

Huibers says he realised a 20-year dream to educate people about history and faith.

The ark has received permission to receive up to 3000 visitors a day. AP

In the groups September quarter update, chief executive offi cer Michael Cameron said he had enormous confi dence in delivering in the short term, which we take to mean the ability to comfortably meet guidance of seven per cent plus growth in earnings per security. This sentiment was also refl ected in the groups fi rst comments about next years earnings (note: GPTs fi nancial year is aligned with the calendar year), with expectations of a very strong 2013. We forecast 6.3 per cent growth in 2013; a respectable pace compared with the broader market. Cameron suggested three factors supporting his conviction: GPTs low cost of debt; the reduction in expenses (alluding

to head count reductions earlier this year) with the full benefi t felt next year; and

a dramatic reduction in the drag on earnings from vacancies at 111 Eagle St, Brisbane.

GPT is focused on acquisitions for its industrial portfolio with the asset class now comprising over 10 per cent of property assets. The group is in the fi nal stages of at least three acquisitions, and hopes to fi nalise most of these before the year is out.

GPT has had a security buyback program in place. However, this is on hold as it is no longer accretive to the security price given the price is trading within fi ve per cent of its net tangible asset value of $3.76.

Securities were last bought under the program at $3.23. The group notes a better use of capital at the current price is to focus on acquisitions. GPT has been in the news recently with a bid for some of

Australands non-residential assets. The group added 1.2 per cent to

its net gearing position in the September quarter and is likely to increase it further by year end if it fulfi ls its acquisition intentions we predict gearing of 24.3 per cent on a look-through basis. With a broad-based expectation of higher values for quality commercial real estate in the coming 12 months, combined with low debt costs, we feel comfortable with this level of gearing.

With Ord Minnetts price target of $3.77 and a distribution yield of 5.5 per cent, GPT is at an attractive price level and represents a portfolio of quality Australian real estate.

The Sunshine Coasts much-anticipated Homemaker Centre on Maroochy Boulevard is helping to transform the former farmland into the area thats destined to become the Coasts new CBD. And now that the tenants are established and the shops have stocked their shelves, the centre is well and truly open for business. Among the well-known home furnishing retailers such as Harvey Norman, Domayne and Nick Scali is a name new to the Coast, kitchenware retailer 2Garnish.

Proprietors Nicole Lovelock and Natisha Rice are newcomers to the kitchenware game. Lovelock has a background in retail banking and Rice in hairdressing, but they have set up shop in the Homemaker Centre offering all sorts and gadgets and devices for the Sunshine Coasts foodies. 2Garnish is far more exciting [than other kitchenware shops] because it covers the basic kitchen essentials all the way through to tabletop decorations, says Lovelock.

The pair is looking forward to building a customer base in the region, which given the hype and anticipation around the centre opening, shouldnt be too diff cult a task.

So what are Lovelocks three favourite items in the store? The KitchenAid, Pizza Over and Salt n Pepper products, she says.

Customers can choose their own favourite pieces at the Homemaker Centre on Maroochy Boulevard at Maroochydore.

    MOKO buy makes sense

Development of the health hub at Kawana was a key factor in Mark Reynolds decision to buy an apartment off the plan in the upmarket MOKO complex at Birtinya Island.

And he loved the apartment complex and the area it is in so much he has changed jobs and joined the real estate offi ce that sold it to him. He is now a sales and marketing consultant.

Reynolds bought his three-bedroom townhouse in March and says there were many reasons that attracted him to the complex and the area.

The apartments are in such a great location, its a hive of activity there now with the construction of the private and public hospitals and the health hub, he says. Timing is everything when it comes to property investing and I was keen to get in early before the market begins

Coast residents will be able to access a range of new and expanded healthcare services when the Sunshine Coast University Hospital opens its doors in December 2013.

Extensive planning and consultation has been undertaken to ensure the new facility will cater to the growing demand for hospital services across the region.

The hospital is expected to service the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regional council areas as well as Wide Bay, and will mean about 10,000 patients each year will be able to receive complex

treatments locally instead of travelling to Brisbane.

The hospitals services will include a 24-hour tertiary level emergency service, including a specialised major trauma service.

Some patients may still be diverted to Brisbane for treatment of conditions such as spinal injuries and severe burns.

Comprehensive cancer services will include outpatients, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, oncology and an acute inpatient service.

The maternity service will provide antenatal, birthing and postnatal care for women and will be integrated with paediatric services to provide a family-centred approach to care.

The rehabilitation unit will help recovery in a range of areas including spinal injuries, acquired brain injury, neurodegenerative disease, amputation, falls and developmental conditions.

Mental health services, renal medicine, allied health and outpatient services will add to the comprehensive health provisions of Coast residents.

The range of allied health services at SCUH will be enhanced with the development of highly specialised clinical services and multi-disciplinary management of patients with complex healthcare needs.

to change and prices go up.There is no doubt that I have

purchased at the bottom of the market and we are now on the way up with thousands of new construction jobs being created thanks to the new medical precinct.

MOKO offers a choice of apartments with one, two and three bedrooms, townhouses and lofts. Located nearby are a convenience supermarket, waterfront restaurant and speciality shops.

    BEER AND CAKE ANYONE?

In Berlin, before a meal, Robert Glaab recommends drinking a pilsner, a beer that also surprisingly goes well with fruit-topped short cake and a dollop of cream.

Glaab is a beer sommelier, and from his perspective the drink known for its simple content of barley, hops, water and yeast is more than something to be served at a bar.

The bitter taste of a pilsner, for example, stimulates the stomach juices before a meal, says the manager of his familys brewery.

Generally speaking, a light beer goes well with light meat and dark beer goes with dark meat, says Glaab. Holding a glass of wheat beer up to the light, he remarks on its strong, gold-yellow colour with a fi ne yeasty opaqueness.

Glaab uses a vocabulary similar to a wine sommeliers, describing the beers fruity aromas of banana and ripe apricot intermingled with light tones of clove, very fi zzy and refreshing. Then he goes on about its soft and round body, discreet bitter notes at the fi nish, soft and harmonically balanced, full of character.

Glaab studied to become a beer sommelier at the Doemens Academy in Munich, which has offered the course since 2004. People from all over the world about 90 per cent of them men sign up for the two-week course, which costs 3000 euros ($3720).

Subjects covered include fi nding the right beer to go with various foods, beer and health, beer and cheese, and even beer and chocolate.

Glaab has little inhibition when it comes to pairing beer unconventionally, having identifi ed the strawberry shortcake and cream combination as a student. DPA

FAMILY/ANIMATED Hollywood has ensured there are a couple of good options for the kids this school holidays that parents will enjoy too.

At the top of that list is the Disney animated fi lm Wreck-It Ralph. Featuring the voices of John C Reilly and Sarah Silverman, its about a bad guy in an arcade game who wants to be liked, and is knee-deep in delightful nostalgia for those who can remember Pac-Man and Super Mario.

For a more traditionally themed animated movie, theres Rise of the Guardians. Hugh Jackman gets laughs voicing a warrior-like version of the Easter Bunny. He, along with fellow guardians North (aka Santa Claus, voiced by Alec Baldwin), Tooth the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), the mute Sandman and newly appointed guardian Jack Frost (Chris Pine), must unite to stop the evil spirit Pitch (Jude Law) and save the wonder, hope and dreams of children.

If you were a fan of Coraline, you should love ParaNorman. Designed for older children (it will be too scary for the younger crowd), this 3D

stop-motion comedy thriller features the voice of Aussie actor Kodi Smit-McPhee as main character Norman. A misunderstood boy who can talk to the dead, he must take on zombies, ghosts, witches and grown-ups to save his town from an old curse.

For those not keen on animation, check out Parental Guidance. It stars Billy Crystal as Artie, who agrees to look after his three grandchildren and instead of sticking to 21st century parenting methods, switches to the old-school means. Also starring Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei.

ACTION/ADVENTURE/THRILLER Due to be released on Boxing Day is the highly anticipated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Sir Peter Jacksons return to Middle-earth since The Lord of the Rings trilogy ended in 2003. Starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, it follows the hobbit on an action-packed adventure with Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) and 13 dwarves to help return their kingdom. The

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling sizzled on screen in Crazy, Stupid, Love and theyve been paired again in Gangster Squad, about the Los Angeles Police Departments fi ght to keep mafi a-types from the East Coast (like Sean Penns Mickey Cohen) away from their city during the 1940s and 50s.

Theres been much criticism from fans about Tom Cruise being cast in Jack Reacher as the six-foot-fi ve, 99-kilogram, ex-military cop made famous in Lee Childs book series. But the author has told fans while not physically like Reacher, Cruise nails it and they should see the fi lm before passing judgment. Based on the ninth novel, One Shot, it also stars Australias Jai Courtney, playing against type as a menacing baddie.

DRAMA The US is gearing up for the awards season, so you can expect to see some of the years best heavyweight dramas releasing over the next

couple of months as Oscar buzz builds. Think musical Les Misrables, starring Australians Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, The Impossible (set during the 2004 tsunami) starring Naomi Watts, and director Kathryn Bigelows follow-up to The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, about the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

Meanwhile, Ang Lees clever adaptation of the book Life of Pi is a gorgeous spiritual fi lm, Hitchcock shows the making of Psycho with Anthony Hopkins starring as the iconic fi lmmaker, and Django Unchained is the latest from auteur Quentin Tarantino, reuniting the director with his Inglourious Basterds villain Christoph Waltz and Pulp Fiction star Samuel L Jackson.

COMEDY For fans of Glee or Aussie comedienne Rebel Wilson, check out the fun and silly Pitch Perfect, about an all-girl a capella singing group of misfi ts, who are competing to win the university nationals competition. Filled with pop hits, golden oldies and a talented cast, its infectious

with its fantastic performances and exuberance. For some more adult humour, theres This is

40, the kind-of sequel spin-off to Knocked Up. Set several years after, it focuses on the lives of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann writer/director Judd Apatows wife). More of an observational comedy about family life and marriage, it also features knockout performances from Mann and Apatows two daughters, alongside the likes of Jason Segel, Chris ODowd and Megan Fox.

For a bit more romance and drama with your laughs, Silver Linings Playbook stars Bradley Cooper as a former teacher who moves back in with his parents (Robert De Niro and Aussie Jacki Weaver) after a stint in a mental institution. While trying to reconcile with his ex-wife, he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), an intriguing girl with problems of her own.

Babs is back. Barbra Streisand stars in The Guilt Trip as Joyce Brewster, whose son, Andy (Seth Rogen) takes her on a road trip while he tries to sell his latest invention. AAP

    OUR 5 FAVOURITE LIP BALMS

Lip balm is the one beauty product we hate to leave home without. Dry lips look and feel terrible, and if you dont have your lip balm handy, licking your lips to keep them moist only makes matters worse.

Its status as an essential addition to every make-up bag means most of us have a favourite lip balm we swear by.

We did a quick whip around the MWP offi ce and asked some of our female staffers to spill the beans on their favourite lip balms.

We asked them which factors affect their choice of lip balm: taste, texture, smell, ingredients, effectiveness, packaging or all of the above.

Jemma: Lanolin Nature has it right with lanolin. Ive been using it since I was a child and no other lip balm comes close. You can use it on elbows and really dry hands in winter, so I use it as a hand cream sometimes too have

you ever seen a shearer with rough hands?

Morgan: Lucas Papaw Ointment I like that its cheap and it lasts for months. I also like that it doesnt have a particular smell or texture, and theres no distinct fl avour. I also recently bought Maybellines Baby Lips Pink in Mixed Berry because I liked the packaging and it has a nice pink tint.

Sam: Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector I have always been a fan of natural lip balms and in the past I have used a range of products with varying degrees of success. I hate the tingle from tea tree and eucalyptus and some are just too heavy. For the last few years I have taken a tube of Clarins Natural Lip Perfector almost everywhere with me. I love it because it is really light but incredibly moisturising. I get very dry lips, particularly in winter, and this lip balm keeps my

lips well moisturised. And it is easy to apply no greasy fi ngers from dipping into a little tub.

Di Mukti Certif ed Organic Macadamia & Honey Lip BalmMuktis lip balm works so well and I like the fact that it doesnt have petroleum jelly in it. Its very healing and soothing, and I tend to use it in winter more than summer. Its also good underneath lipstick; if you put it on and then put your lipstick or lip gloss over it, it makes it last longer.

Jarna: BlistexMy favourite is probably Burts Bees Tinted Rose Lip Balm, but I have to admit for day-to-day use, Im hopelessly addicted to plain old Blistex. I do worry about whats in it, but I havent been able to kick the habit, or fi nd a natural one that has that same tingly feeling. I honestly cant go anywhere without it, and my partner is hooked on the stuff too!

I thought the webinar was fantastic... I now have a fuller understanding of my health L.C. Buderim

Are you not as happy as you used to be? Is stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or ADHD overwhelming you? Are anti-depressants not working for you?

Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind wont stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow?

We had an incredible response from all who were logged on for the webinar we ran about one of my favourite topics Solving the puzzle that creates Anxiety Depression & ADHD. When you put it all together, it all makes sense.

There are 7 key underlying triggers which can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.

The 7 key common triggers that affect your brain, cause a compounding effect that your brain cannot deal with, which leads to long term, and then permanent brainwave pattern changes, affecting your personality, mood, and ability to think and cope, permanently!

Fortunately it can be quite easy to address. Patients who have suffered depression for four decades, have reported to have improved out of sight after one month and other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment, including sufferers of Major Depressive Disorder, and children with ADHD, who have then been able to reduce their medication in less than 7 weeks, and these results are permanent and medication free!

Proven with testing, these steps improve brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication, in adults and children. To f nd out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the webinar on our website. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can see on the internet. You just register through the website and it will play for you on your computer. Its easy and its free. Jane Fonda instructed her plastic surgeon not to eliminate her wrinkles because she didnt want to look overdone, according to Access Hollywood.

The actress will turn 75 later this month and has been candid in the past about using cosmetic surgery.

But she gave detailed instructions to her surgeon not to overdo it.

I made sure that they kept my lines. I didnt want to lose my wrinkles, I just wanted to lose the bags under my eyes.

Fonda says eliminating signs of ageing completely would be hypocrisy, but says going under the knife prolonged her already successful career.

We do live in a time when, if you can afford a good doctor, you can have subtle plastic surgery, which probably bought me fi ve more years as an actor, she says.

Fonda recently got back into fi tness after the success of her 1980s workout tapes.

She released a new yoga DVD

that focuses on light stretches to improve mobility.

The actress has previously credited good genes and healthy habits with maintaining her youthful appearance.

I owe 30 per cent to genes, 30 per cent to good sex, 30 per cent because of sports and healthy lifestyle and for the remaining 10 per cent, I have to thank my plastic surgeon, Fonda told Sirius XM Radio in New York City this week. AAP
