GRATITUDE It is with genuine thankfulness that I have returned to the Monmia school community. The support, care and kindness I have received during my husband Greg’s illness and passing from staff, students, families and colleagues has been an overwhelming experience. I wish to acknowledge, thank and praise the leadership of Lucia Vorpasso as Acting Principal and Vineta Mitrevski, Assistant Principal I knew the school was in safe, capable and very competent management. During their guidance the school went through a successful school review, developed a new School Strategic Plan and an Annual Implementation Plan. School organisation for 2019 was efficiently organised, a new School Council in place and a Library project completed. This on top of their countless other tasks. Thank you to the whole school community from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me back with such warmth.
DATE: Thursday July 21st 2019 ISSUE 21
BE YOU PRESENTATION As part of our Library Reopening extravaganza, we had a Be You presentation by Georgie Harman, Beyond
Blue CEO and the ‘Be You’ team. Georgie Harman presented the Monmia community with an amazing Be
You sign as we were the first school in Australia to become a Be You school! Georgie spoke about how she
loved returning to our school and that as she travels around Australia to
promote Be You she uses photos and videos of the launch here at Monmia last
year. Georgie added that at Monmia, we are the epitome of what a Be You
school should be and that everyone walking into the school can feel the
essence of the school community culture. Georgie Harman wrote in our Guest
Book:
“I am so happy to be back at Monmia, the first Be You School in Australia.
I’m sure your amazing new library will give you wings to fly even higher.”
LIBRARY REOPENING The refurbishment of the school library has been a massive project which was started in 2017. We started
with a dream and a budget of $30,000 which Family and Friends were going to provide from their fundraising.
The dream became a vision of what a magical learning space it could be for our students. It was with the
generous help of Natalie Suleyman, State Member of Parliament that we received funds from the Andrews
State Government of $100,000. And what a wonderland the Library has become, truly bringing to life this
quote provided by the Quilliam family when they donated a book to the library:
“What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it feels about education”
Once you see our refurbished library you will soon see the measure Monmia places on education because
our new library is simply spectacular.
Monmia places a high emphasis on Reading because it matters. It is a school strategic plan goal and it forms
the core work of each and every teacher. If you look in each classroom you will see classroom libraries,
individual book boxes with Just Right books, conferring and goal setting between the teacher and the student,
mini lessons and reading groups. This year we have introduced the Monmia Reading Challenge to promote
reading at home and students will be awarded certificates when they reach more than 100 nights of reading.
Did you know that 20 minutes of reading at night makes a huge difference to how a student performs
academically across all areas? All families have received a pamphlet printed by Ray White that clearly shares
this important information with families.
It is a credit to all of us that we have successfully completed an exciting journey that will now provide our
students and community members with an engaging library space to learn, explore and grow. Our new
refurbished library is the heart of the school. The new library is ours.
Our hope for each and every Monmia student is that they love reading, books and their library. Each student
received a special badge with love your library as a gift to remind them that when we develop a genuine love
for reading, books and libraries it can transform your life.
There is a nature theme to our library, providing a calm and relaxing space to learn. The glass windows look
out onto our beautiful indigenous garden. Our theme sentence “Reading gives you wings to fly” is our strong
message. The butterfly symbol has been used to represent transformation. It reflects an environment that
has physically transformed and has the potential to transform a life. It is the same symbol used by our ‘Beyond
Blue’ partners. There are many interactive elements to our new library and of course new and exciting books
and accessories to use.
It is with great pleasure we acknowledge our deep gratitude to each and every one of our contributors and
sponsors for their valuable and collaborative efforts to bring this library to life.
The 2017-2019 School Council led by Mary Papaiannou and Amanda Deakin during that time and the
Buildings and Grounds Sub-Committee for commencing the planning stages of the library refurbishment.
Manni Tihrintzis for liaising with one of his architect colleagues to draft a plan for the library.
The 2017-2019 Family and Friends Committee, led by Sharon DiBella who commenced fundraising for the
project.
The 2018 Carnevale Committee, led by Dora Banis for directing funds raised towards the refurbishment of the
school library. These two groups contributed $30,000 to the school library project.
Natalie Suleyman, State Member for St Albans who presented the school with $100,000 to support the
school’s plans for a refurbished library.
AOA architects, Gordon Lewicki and Chris Peck who created an inspirational library, inside and outside which
is more than we could have achieved working alone.
Gail Sheedy from DET who liaised with the school and the architects at every stage of the project.
Lisa Sharp from Raeco who collaborated with the school to select the new library furniture to reflect the vision.
Von Cammareri from Creative Designs who created wonderful artwork for the exterior and interior of the
library.
Richard Polacek for assisting us in many areas to finish the entire library space.
Daniel McDonald the school’s grounds man who prepared the grounds ready for the launch.
Carmel Zumbo for organising the removal of the library books from the old space and to the parents,
guardians and students who helped with the move.
A special thank you is extended to the following parents and guardians from our school community:
Al Ozmal and his 3 sons for dismantling the old shelving and selling it for us with funds going back into the
library.
Kelly Claxton, Brad Claxton and Pragya Srivastava for moving back all the picture story books and factual texts.
This was a huge job and they completed it with enthusiasm from start to finish.
Sharon DiBella, Naomi Woods, Belinda Ali, Rene Raciti and Colleen from the school crossing for helping with
a range of tasks in the library.
We also express our gratitude to the following staff members who helped with the library:
Natalija Caridi who helped paint the ceiling of a special library feature.
Lisa Tate for using her creative genius to create an art piece that captures our nature theme beautifully.
Kate Belovitch for creating meticulous and coordinated signage throughout the library.
Anja Rauch-Bellofiore and Mary Papaiannou for all the administration tasks they completed on various
aspects of the library project.
Leanne Anderson and Emmy Koroneos who have completed many, many tasks for a long period of time in
preparing for today.
Jayne Sutcliffe for processing the many, many books donated and purchased.
Carmel Zumbo for preparing the library system for our students to begin borrowing books from next week.
Leanne Anderson, Emmy Koroneos, Michelle Rinaldi, Merryn Auld, Sophie Bowler and Cam Than-Trong who
contacted many, many books and prepared various displays for us.
Tan Ly and David Vasica for creating the slideshow that you see in the library and for filming today.
Vineta Mitrevski who was involved in all stages of the project and gave constructive feedback.
Thank you to all the students and staff who provided constructive feedback at various points in the project.
Thank you to the many families and staff who have donated a range of beautiful books for our amazing
library.
We are so fortunate to have such remarkable and generous sponsors who have also provided us with
incredible donations. We would like to thank Lee Bouakeo, the manager for the Commonwealth Bank in
Keilor Downs who has sponsored the Roald Dahl section of the library. The Commonwealth Bank provided
the school with a $500 cheque in Term 2 to purchase the books. This section has Roald Dahl’s special books
that have entertained students around the world for years. Our gratitude also goes to Peter Travalos and his
team from Ray White Real Estate in Taylors Lakes for sponsoring the Harry Potter exhibition. Harry Potter
has been a worldwide phenomenon and has appealed to a wide range of audiences for many years and its
popularity continues to grow and grow.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge Lucia Vorpasso for her leadership, passion and
dedication throughout this project. With Vineta Mitrevski by her side and the support
of the staff and community she brought a vision into a fantabulous reality. Lucia spent
many hours searching for puppets, accessories and toys to accompany the many
wonderful books for our children to enjoy. All her endeavours became worthwhile
when all our visitors and the community as well as students and staff gasped in
astonishment as they walked through our enchanted library. I was delighted to hear
Timothy B say, “I’m in heaven!” as he walked through and Jessica C stated, “I have
no words. I am speechless!” Milan exclaimed, “I am in an unreal wonderland!” And
this one from Molly, “When you’re in the library, it feels like you are in a book already!”
We invite all our Monmia families to come and visit this spectacular space when you
have a chance either before or after school. You will love it as much as we do.
NAIDOC DAY CELEBRATIONS The NAIDOC Little Long Walk celebration was another exciting event this week. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about our Indigenous people and their culture. Mrs Kim Renda organised a learning experience with special guests who engaged our students in learning about Aboriginal culture, Michael Long and the history of the Long Walk as well as learning to count with Sean, the didgeridoo player. Our school leaders helped organise and lead the special school assembly. Monmia’s House Leaders prepared and delivered information about Michael Long, the history of the Long Walk, explained what Reconciliation meant and described the meaning behind NAIDOC. Sean taught the students to count to five and learn a dance to help them remember the numbers. He also explained how the didgeridoo came to be given its name which was from an Englishman who happened to hear the instrument being played. Courtenay Dempsey gave an ambassador speech about the Long Walk and his background in playing for Essendon Football Club. Sharon Brooks and Joshua Serra spoke about their donation of books about Aboriginal myths and Leanne Brooks brought our House Leaders Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander beanies as well as two Long Walk flags. Thank you to all our guests for making this such a special occasion and joining us on our Monmia Little Long Walk. A very special acknowledgement to Mrs Kim Renda for her organisation especially when having to make some very last minute changes which weren’t expected.
It has been a very full first week back in Term 3. I am sure the rest of this term will continue to be filled with amazing happenings and learning. Warm Regards,
Lorraine Bell Principal

2019 Parent Opinion Survey
WE WANT OUR PARENTS/ GUARDIANS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents/guardians think of our school. The Parent
Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted
amongst a sample of randomly selected parents/guardians. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an
understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our
school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement
strategies.
Approximately 30 per cent of parents/guardians will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All
responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from
Monday 22rd July to Sunday 11th August.
The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any
convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The
online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic,
Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Greek, Turkish, Somali and Punjabi.
The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. The schools survey results
will be communicated to the community through the annual reporting process as well as school council. Last
year we used the survey results to plan further school improvement evident in our annual implementation
plan.
All randomly selected families will be provided with survey login details on Friday 19th July.
If you would like further information on how to login to the parent opinion survey or further details feel free
to speak to Vineta Mitrevski, Assistant Principal.

Introducing…
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Monmia is a Bucket Filling School! We fill buckets and we don’t dip!
We use our lid to keep our bucket full and keep the drops in! The Bucket Fillers Philosophy has been embraced by our school community again this year. I know that we can keep filling other people’s buckets and make Monmia Primary School a warm, positive and caring place to be. When we all fill other people’s buckets then all community members benefit from these acts of kindness. There is a community bucket in the administration area. Please take a few minutes to acknowledge a community member of group to show that we all believe in the power of bucket filling. Let’s make term 3, the term when many more community members write these acknowledgements for specific grades or professional learning community members, staff members, other community members, school groups or specific students. There is so much to acknowledge at Monmia Primary School!
Remember that when you fill someone else’s bucket, you fill yours as well so keep filling buckets Monmia! Happy Bucket Filling!
Kind Regards,
Lucia Vorpasso

EVERY DAY COUNTS: Prioritise school attendance! Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s
education. Students learn new things at school every day. Missing school puts
them behind.
There is no safe number of days for missing school. Each day a student
misses school puts them behind, and can affect their educational
outcomes. Each missed day is associated with progressively lower
achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.
Congratulations to the following 43 students who achieved a 100%

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY
SPOTLIGHT ON BOUNCE BACK A WELLBEING AND RESILIENCE PROGRAM
THE FOCUS FOR THIS WEEK IS: RELATIONSHIPS ARE IMPORTANT! Dear Parents and Guardians, A very successful leader once said to me that developing RELATIONSHIPS is one of the most important things in helping you and others feel happy and safe. Building strong relationships help others during good times and in times of need.
Getting along well with others and making friends will make you feel happier. If you have good friendships and can get along well with others, you will be happier. It’s fun to do things with friends and friends are good to talk to when you are worried or upset. It takes hard work to learn how to get along with other people and be a good friend. We aren’t born knowing how to be a friend and get along with others. We all have to learn how to do it just like we have to learn to read and do mathematics. We have to practise what we have learned. To get along well with someone else you have to stop and think about their feelings and not just your own. You also have to think about what is fair for them as well as what is fair for you.
No one has friends all the time. Everyone feels lonely sometimes. Many people have times in their life when they feel like they don’t have a friend, but this is usually only for a short time. If you try to get to know people and try to get along well with other people, you will make friends in no time at all. Sometimes friendships change and are no longer as strong as they were. People change as they grow and friendships don’t always last. Sometimes your friends move on to other friendships and don’t spend as much time with you. Sometimes you are the one who moves on and lets the friendship go. This is normal and it happens to everyone at some point in their life. It doesn’t mean that there is anything bad or wrong with you or the other person. Family Activity Interview each member of your family and ask then this question “Who has been your greatest friend and why are they your greatest friend? Have you told that person that they are your greatest friend? Encourage your family members to tell the person they select that they are a great friend and the reasons why!
I hope you find the articles useful and I look forward to any feedback. Next week we will continue exploring the topic of RELATIONSHIPS. Warm Regards,
Lucia Vorpasso Assistant Principal - Student Engagement and Wellbeing

Bicycle/Scooter Policy
Monmia Primary School
This policy was last presented to School Council in: June, 2019
School Council President: Amanda Deakin
Rationale
To provide guidelines for parents/ guardians and students who choose to ride to school.
Aim
All students riding bicycles/scooters to school will:
● Be safe riding to and from school wearing a helmet at all times
● Know and be able to follow the Vic Roads rules
● Keep bicycles/scooters and helmets in good, safe working order
Implementation
● The Department of Education and Training (DET) and Victorian Roads Authority recommend
that students under 12 years of age DO NOT ride bicycles/scooters to and from school unless
accompanied by an adult.
https://www.legalaid.vic.gov.au/sites/www.legalaid.vic.gov.au/files/vla-resource-bike-
law.pdf
● Students must correctly wear a Australian safety standard AS/NZS2063 approved bicycle
helmet at all times when in control of a bicycle/scooter.
● All road rules concerning bicycles/scooters are to be followed. This includes the pedestrians’
right way on footpaths. The bell should be used as a warning when approaching pedestrians.
● Before students can ride their bicycle/scooter to school they must, with their parents/guardians,
read and sign the Bicycle/Scooter Agreement and Bicycle/Scooter permission note and return
them to the office.
● Bicycles/scooters ridden and helmets worn to school must be in a good, safe working order and
bicycles/scooters must be fitted with a bell and lights/reflectors.
● Entry and exit points to Monmia Primary School are via the Willys gate pedestrian entrance
only.
● Students are to dismount before entering the school grounds and walk their bicycles/scooters
whilst on site.
● Bicycles/scooters are to be stored in the rack outside the Principal's office.
● Bicycles/scooters must be locked with a chain and padlock supplied by the bicycle/scooter
owner.
● Bicycles/scooters and helmets are brought and stored on site at the owner’s risk.
● Parents/guardians will be notified if students do not adhere to the School’s Bicycle/Scooter
Policy.
● Riding of bicycles, scooters, rollerblades or skateboards is not permitted in the school grounds
during school or after hours.
Note: Skateboard and rollerblades are not permitted at Monmia Primary School under any circumstances,
unless directed by teachers. If they are brought to school they are to be secured for the day in the office area.
Evaluation
This policy will be reviewed as part of the School Council cyclic review or earlier if required.

A guide to Bicycle Maintenance: Six Point Safety Check
Feature What are you checking for? How does this bicycle rate?
Tyres ● Firm tyres
● Tread not worn and no canvas showing
● No bulges or cuts
Bell ● Rings clearly and loud
Pedals ● Rotate freely when spun
● Rubber not showing signs of wear
Lights/Reflectors ● Secure,clean and shine brightly
● Must be fastened securely and highly
visible
Brakes ● Block not worn down when brakes
applied
● Bike wheel does not rotate when
brakes are applied
Chain ● Does not move more than 2.5cm when
when lifted
● Is well oiled
Size of bike
( see information below)
● Correct size for rider
Helmets must be Australian safety standard AS/NZS2063, safe, not been in an accident or have been dropped, as this
reduces the safety of the helmet. Regularly fortnightly checks are needed.
https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/cyclist-safety/choosing-and-maintaining-your-bicycle
What is the right size bicycle?
The right size of bicycle:
● Has controls within reach
● Is comfortable for the rider
● Has a level seat
● The rider’s feet should just touch the ground when the rider is sitting on the seat
● Handlebars should allow for the arms to be slightly bent as the body leans slightly forward
● The bicycle is the right size if the rider can straddle the crossbar with both feet flat on the ground; otherwise the
bicycle is too big and therefore, unsafe. On mountain bikes and BMX there should be at least 5-10 centimetres
clearance between the top tube of the frame (or where a top tube would be) and the rider’s crotch. • On road
bikes, the clearance should be about 3 centimetres. If there is no crossbar, make the test from where the crossbar
would be.
