A big thank you to all the guest speakers who presented to our students about their careers! Students have been left INSPIRED! Exceptional singing from all students of the school song and the national anthem at Monday morning assembly where there was an outstanding turn out of our families. I know they gave their best performances and did our school very proud. Thank you to Mr Belovitch for preparing and organizing these students for this event. Thank you to our neighbouring schools for providing us with experienced teachers so our staff could attend the funeral of Mr Vorpasso. Thank you to all of our school community for your overwhelming support during this very emotional time, sharing your deepest condolences for Mrs Bell and Miss Vorpasso. Next week we will start the process of processing new and exciting texts that have been purchased especially for the new library and donated by the generous community. Jayne Sutcliffe, our former library technician has been keeping up with the progress of the library and has agreed to help us with the processing of these books. We will also begin moving back all the books back into the library and preparing the shelves with surprises. Stay tuned for the grand launch date! DATE: Thursday May 23rd 2019 ISSUE 15

ENROLMENTS Over the past few weeks, we have been conducting successful school tours for prospective parents with primary aged children. We love taking families on tours as we get the opportunity to showcase our effective school. We are now taking enrolments for Year Prep 2020 and in other year levels. If you have any relatives or friends who have young children starting school next year, please ask them to make an appointment at the office for a school tour. We are very proud of all our achievements and look forward to extending our Monmia PS family.

Kind Regards,

Vineta Mitrevski

Student Engagement and Wellbeing

Introducing…

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Monmia is a Bucket Filling School! We fill buckets and we don’t dip!

We use our lid to keep our bucket full and keep the drops in! I love how the Bucket Fillers Philosophy has been embraced by our school community this year. I know that we can keep filling other people’s buckets and make Monmia Primary School a warm, positive and caring place to be. When we all fill other people’s buckets then all community members benefit from these acts of kindness. There is so much to acknowledge at Monmia Primary School! Here are some ‘drops’ for you to read.

Remember that when you fill someone else’s bucket, you fill yours as well so keep filling buckets Monmia! Happy Bucket Filling!

Kind Regards,

Lucia Vorpasso

Assistant Principal - Student Engagement and Wellbeing

EVERY DAY COUNTS:

Routines are essential!

Are you having problems getting your child to school?

Perhaps he/she:

• will not get out of bed in the morning and will not go to bed at night

• cannot find their uniform, books or school bag.

• eats their breakfast too slowly

• has not completed their homework

• spends too much time watching TV in the morning.

If so, speak about school positively and set home and school routines

to help

• have a set time to go to bed and to get out of bed

• have the uniform and school bag ready the night before

• have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast

• set a time for daily homework tasks

• be firm and send your child to school every school day.

SPOTLIGHT ON BOUNCE BACK A WELLBEING AND RESILIENCE PROGRAM

THE FOCUS FOR THIS WEEK IS: WHAT IS BULLYING? Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is important to know what bullying is and what it is not. Monmia has NO TOLERANCE on Bullying. We often hear the term “bullying” being used, but most of the time it is not used correctly. It is very important to understand what bullying is and what it is not. The Department of Education and Training’s definition is:

‘Bullying is when someone, or a group of people, deliberately upset or hurt another person or damage their property, reputation or social acceptance on more than one occasion. There is an imbalance of power in incidents of bullying with the bully or bullies having more power at the time due to age, size, status or other reasons’.

It’s NOT bullying if students just have an argument or if someone says or does just one nasty thing to someone else. Bullying can take many forms:

1. Direct physical bullying

hitting, tripping, pushing or damaging property 2. Direct verbal bullying

name calling, insults, ‘put down’ comments and racist remarks 3. Indirect emotional bullying - This form of bullying is harder to recognise and often carried out behind

the person’s back. It is designed to harm someone’s social reputation and cause humiliation. Indirect bullying includes:

lying and spreading rumours

playing nasty jokes or mimicking to embarrass and humiliate

encouraging others to socially exclude someone

damaging someone’s social reputation and social acceptance 4. Cyber-bullying, which involves the use of technologies such as the use of email, text messages, chat

rooms, Facebook or Twitter to humiliate and distress a person. Family Activity Look up the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) website. Discuss the connection between the RSPCA and bullying of a person.

How would it feel to see animals being mistreated?

How would it feel to see students being bullied?

What would you do if you saw animals being mistreated?

What would you do if you saw another student being bullied?

I hope you find the articles interesting and useful.

Warm Regards,

Lucy Vorpasso Assistant Principal - Student Engagement and Wellbeing
