ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Wim Vandekeybus

Wim Vandekeybus is a director, choreographer, actor and photographer. After working for two years with Jan Fabre, he created his own working structure, Ultima Vez, in 1986. His first performance, 1987’s What the Body Does Not Remember, was an instant hit and changed the landscape of modern dance. Since then, Vandekeybus has created more than 20 shows which tour worldwide. He discovered the medium of film while making his first dance films. A few years later he started writing and directing fiction shorts. His work has received many awards at art film and short film festivals, including ACID Cannes, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Prague d’Or, Montreal Festival du Film sur l’art, and the IMZ Dance Screen Award. He is currently developing his first feature, Galloping Mind, a drama set in South Africa, about a boy who, after eight years of separation, meets his twin sister during a street robbery. Unable to run from their own past, together they discover their common fate, brought upon them by the adult world. Galloping Mind is a Savage Film production, with Celluloid Dreams attached as sales agent.

Meet Jerry, an obsessive but frustrated director who decides to turn his back on the theatre in favour of a controversial new project. But things soon start to go wrong. As he struggles with the demands of his role as leader, he is plagued by surreal dreams conjured up by his guilty conscience.

Monkey Sandwich is a portmanteau film with a captivating tangle of stories involving the search for an unborn child, a disturbing hunting trip, a haunted LP, a screaming piglet and a river gone rogue. The title of the film refers to the Dutch description of urban myths as ‘monkey sandwich stories’.

It is a film about error, loss and guilt. It praises the art of story-telling by weaving various legends into a single story about a catastrophe caused by a human mistake. People tell stories to explain other things. They use a kind of communication in which things are suggested: logical or not, funny and/or creepy, cruel or moral, genuine or invented. It’s a kind of post-industrial folklore to respond to our universal fears and desires. Like the songs of a troubadour in the past, people tell stories to express what they want to say. Monkey Sandwich is the story of a man coping with the consequences of his actions, not always knowing how to express what he wants to say.
