Miami Lakes resident organizes MS support group

MS MATCHED, a support group started by Miami Lakes resi-dent, Karla Gonzalez-Rubio, met for 12 weeks at Always At YourSide Adult Day Care.

By R.A. RomeroThe Miami Laker staffA Social Work intern at The

National Multiple SclerosisSociety of South Florida andMiami Lakes resident, KarlaGonzalez-Rubio, said it startedwith a dream.

“It started with a dream and anorange scarf. An orange scarf tosymbolize Multiple Sclerosisawareness and a dream that thiscould be a world where no onewith a chronic illness should have

to ever feel alone,” said Gonzalez-Rubio.

Gonzalez-Rubio started MSMatched, a group for youngwomen living with MultipleSclerosis, a disease marked by theabnormal response of the body'simmune system directed againstthe central nervous system. Thebody’s attack against its own nervefibers and myelin, the nerve fiberinsulators, result in mild, moderateor severe worsening of neurologi-cal function which can run thegamut of symptoms from chronicpain to walking difficulties.

“I started MS Matched as a wayto honor the agency I serve, whereI have met some of the most caringand compassionate people I haveever known and to give back to thecommunity,” said Gonzalez-Rubio.

The approach to the group ismore of equipping newly diag-nosed women with the propertools for hope and a positivefuture, rather than a place to wal-low in mutual misery.

As someone who has lived witha chronic illness, Gonzalez-Rubiounderstands the difficulties butalso hopes to lighten the load forothers by giving the advice andsupport she says would have savedher “a lot of heartache” early inlife.

Finding a location for the MSMatched group to meet was thenext step, one that Miami LakesVice Mayor Manny Cid and co-owner Alexandra Alonso solved

by offering the adult care center,Always At Your Side, as a meetingplace.

“I am eternally grateful to ViceMayor Cid and Alexandra Alonsofor their support and generosity. They both so graciously lent usthis private facility, located inMiami Lakes where the meetingsare conducted on a weekly basis,”said Gonzalez-Rubio.

“It’s a great group and I ammore than happy to help,” saidCid. “ I have had my own strug-gles so I understand the impor-tance of giving back to the com-munity in any way I can, not onlyby serving on the political side, but also within my business.”

Once a week, MS Matchedgroup members congregate at thecenter after hours to share theirpersonal stories, give words ofencouragement and travel throughthis journey together. At the closeof the 12 week meetings, thegroup met for a final time atTrattoria Pampered Chef for a sit-down dinner with Cid.

Gonzalez-Rubio hopes to con-tinue the group with new membersfor another 12 week schedule ifenough interest is shown.

“I thank the MS Society ofSouth Florida for allowing me theopportunity to develop this groupthat has touched so many lives andenriched my own beyond what Ithought was possible. I am thank-ful to my director, Suhaill Ruano, for her constant guidance and sup-port,” said Gonzalez-Rubio.

Lakes soccer coach named Humanitarian of the YearThe Miami Laker staffChris Nurse knows first hand

the feeling of melancholia follow-

ing the death of a loved one.The Fort Lauderdale Strikers

soccer star lost his mother to breast

cancer and her death sent him intoa tailspin of despair.

“It was so hard,” he said. But his mother’s death was the

impetus for him to reach his dreamof becoming a professional soccerplayer and the face of his organiza-tion to raise awareness of a diseasethat has notched a grim record inSouth Florida as the No. 2 leadingcause of death among women.

And his efforts scored him oneof the highest achievements for asports player.

Nurse, who is also a coach forthe Miami Lakes United SoccerClub, recently was named the2014 North American SoccerLeague Humanitarian of the Year,an honor awarded to an athletewho has demonstrated excellencein sports and beyond the playingfield.

The finalists for the award arenominated by their respectiveteams, then the winner is voted onby the media, players, and clubrepresentatives.

According to the NASL, theveteran midfielder was chosenbecause he dedicated much of hislife off the field by raising moneyand awareness for breast cancer.

“It was a turning point in mylife,” said Nurse, who was born inEngland. “My mom would alwaystell people that I was going to be aprofessional soccer player when Iwas growing up, and when shepassed away, I felt like it was myobligation to see it through andmake it happen.”

Nurse, 30, said he has raisedmore than $10,000 for Susan G.Komen, and this year, he steppedup as the face of a strong partner-ship between the Strikers andSusan G. Komen in Miami andFort Lauderdale.

He said it was the biggest scoreof his career.

“Being able to link Susan G.Komen with our club is huge forthe community,” he said. “It’simportant for people to know thatour organization has players going

through the same issues, and Ithink it creates a common bondbetween the players and the fans.Hopefully one day we can find acure.”

During Nurse's time with thePuerto Rico Islanders, he spear-headed a similar fund-raiser forSusan G Komen Breast CancerFoundation in memory of hismother and raised in excess of$6,000.

During Breast CancerAwareness Month in October,Nurse took the lead on an initiativethat included Strikers playerswearing pink shirts duringpregame warm-ups.

After each game, the playersthen sold the shirts and the pro-ceeds went to helping JuanitaChavez, the mother of Strikers’defender Justin Chavez, who wasdiagnosed with breast cancer earli-er this year. Nurse has served as animportant mentor for Chavez, hav-ing experienced the same ordeal10 years ago with his own mother.

CHRIS NURSE, a star with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and acoach with the Miami Lakes Soccer Club, has been named the2014 North American Soccer League Humanitarian of the Year.

Marriage and family therapist, Dira De La Rosa, offers two decades of experience with families

By R.A. RomeroThe Miami Laker staffDira De La Rosa, a marriage

and family therapist located at6625 Miami Lakes Drive, Suite228, has specialized in healingfamilies and marriages over thelast two decades. As a remarriedmother, she understands thedynamics and strains that relation-ships face in every day life.

“As a marriage and family ther-apist I am trained to work with avariety of clients including indi-viduals, couples, families, busi-ness groups. I’ve dedicated mostof my practice to working withcouples going through relationshipdifficulties and also with individu-als wishing to overcome problemsthat are holding them back fromgrowth and success,” said De La

Rosa.De La Rosa’s services are var-

ied. She offers a therapy sessiontailored to each couple and rela-tionship, and gives the opportunityfor trust to lead the way, while stillassessing the weaknesses andstrengths each person brings to thetable. Additionally De La Rosadoes offer assistance to coupleswho have chosen the divorceroute for an amicable and respect-ful relationship, as well as hyp-notherapy.

She will be introducing a work-shop beginning in 2015 for cou-ples to reconnect using the fivesenses, the first of which is aTango lesson to place value on theimportance of touch.

Direct is not typically a styleexpected in therapy, but De La

Rosa commits fully to givingimmediate application and honestyto couples who are hoping toassess their relationship. This hon-esty creates the bridge to changeand action.

“I get to see people at theirabsolute worst times and watchthem grow and bounce back, orsimply become new people. Whatan honor to have people share theirlives with me. I don’t take that forgranted for a second. I learn somuch from clients, from theirresilience and courage to face theirproblems.”

As a therapist, De La Rosa alsotakes into account the changingsocial landscape of our world andhow that translates within relation-ships. Changes in gender roles, societal pressures, and personal

expectations have shaped marriageinto something far different fromgrandparents before us.Nonetheless, many things remaintrue to this day.

“Many ‘healthy’ relationshipshave things in common – a goodfriendship as a foundation, astrong sense of trust, a sense ofopenness and playfulness, commu-nication that does not always endin hostility, a sense of compassion, and allowance of individual free-dom,’ said De La Rosa.

Had De La Rosa not pursuedtherapy, she notes she would prob-ably still be involved in anthropol-ogy, her undergraduate studies. She says she has always had aclear love for people and commu-nities, and understanding whatmakes relationships and individu-

als tick.De La Rosa works by appoint-

ment only. Both day time andevening hours are available as wellas some Saturdays. Phone andwebcam sessions are also avail-able.

Safety for the HolidaysThe holiday season has begun,

which means it’s time to bring outthe trees, lights and decorationsfrom storage to fill you home withholiday cheer. However, the joy ofthe holidays also brings the risk offires and injuries triggered by theirimproper use.

According to the National FireProtection Association (NFPA),one of every 40 reportedChristmas tree fires in homesresulted in a casualty.Additionally, 32 percent ofChristmas tree fires were startedby electrical problems with holi-day lights and decorations. To pre-vent the risk of fires in your homethis holiday season, keep in mindthese crucial tips.

With natural trees, maintenanceis important. When choosing anatural tree to bring home, checkfor the following:

• To ensure your tree is fresh, the tree must be green and haveneedles that are difficult to pullfrom branches. To determine this, bend the branch between your fin-gers to make sure the needlesdon’t break.

• The base of the tree should besticky with resin.

When preparing to place thetree in the home, cut off about 2inches of the tree trunk for betterwater absorption. The tree must beplaced on a durable, water-holdingstand with wide spread feet. Checkthe stand daily to make sure thelevel of the water does not gobelow the base of the tree.Remember that the fresher thetree, the less of a fire hazard it will

be.When purchasing an artificial

tree, look for a “Fire Resistant”label. Additionally, anUnderwriters Laboratory (UL)label can identify trees that havebuilt-in electrical systems. The ULmark means that UL engineershave tested representative samplesof the product for foreseeable safe-ty hazards such as fire and electricshock.

Any Christmas tree should beplaced at least 3 feet away fromany heat source, and should notblock an exit.

The indoor and outdoor deco-rating of a home with lights andelectrical decorations is popular, but it’s important to know how –and where – to place them.Holiday lights and electrical deco-rations are available for indoor, outdoor or multipurpose use. Toidentify the appropriate place touse them, look for the holographicUL mark which indicates it hasbeen tested for safety hazards. Ifthe holographic mark is green, itindicates the decoration or light isfor indoor use only; if the holo-graphic mark is red, it indicatesthe decoration or light is for indoorand outdoor use.

LED lights decorations are rec-ommended due to their ability touse less energy and run cooler thantraditional incandescent lights.Lights and decorations shouldalways be carefully inspected forany cracked sockets, frayed orbare wires, or loose connections.Exposed or damaged wires can

cause a serious shock or start afire.

To present damage to lightcords, use clips to hang them.Outdoor lights should be securedonto trees, walls or outside struc-tures of the home. Never connectmore than three sets of lights ordecorations per extension as it canoverheat and cause a fire.

If you have children or pets, becautious of any decorations thatare breakable or with small, detachable parts. These decora-tions should not be placed on thelower branches of the tree wherethey can be easily reached. Tinselis another decoration to be cau-tious of since it is a choking haz-ard for children and poisonous forpets.

Remember that when leavingthe home or going to bed, alwaysturn off all decorations and lights.

Candles are popular around theholiday season due to the varyingholiday fragrances available. Tokeep your home smelling like agingerbread house and prevent afire, remember that candles shouldnever be lit near combustible itemsor in locations where they can beknocked over.

Additionally, burning candlesshould remain within sight andnever leave children and pets unat-tended in rooms that contain litcandles.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue wish-es all county residents and visitorsa safe and happy holiday seasonfilled with joy and laughter!

Historical Opa Locka Airportundergoes name change

Opa-locka Airport, the air traf-fic reliever to Miami InternationalAirport and hosted U.S. presidentsarriving in town and celebritytravelers, now has a new name.

Last month, Miami-DadeCounty commissioners voted torename the historical propertyMiami-Opa locka ExecutiveAirport. The move, according toCommissioner Barbara Jordan, was to rebrand the airport toincrease visibility and enhanceaviation traffic. It was also aneffort to capitalize off of the allurethat Miami offers, while keepingthe historical significance of thecity in which it is housed.

“Everyone around the countryknows where Miami is located,”

said Jordan, who spearheaded thelegislation. “By adding the nameMiami, it increases the value ofthis airport and puts it on the mapfor aviation professionals andnon-aviation enthusiasts.”

Miami-Opa locka ExecutiveAirport is located just seven milesnorth of Miami InternationalAirport and only three miles fromSun Life Stadium. It is the largestof Miami-Dade County’s fiveGeneral Aviation Airports. Thefacility handles private, pleasureand business flights. Pace Spartans basketball team is off and runningBy Rene D. BasultoSpecial to The Miami LakerA basketball team scoring over

90 points is a common occurrencein an NBA game, but somethingmuch rarer in a high school basket-ball game. However, MonsignorEdward Pace High School’s boysvarsity basketball team has beendoing just that, including a 96-71win over the Edison Red Raiderson November 21.

The high-scoring Spartans bas-ketball team is currently 4-0 inregular season play and 6-0 includ-ing pre-season games. In the pre-season Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 12-13, the team beat the ChristopherColumbus Explorers, 85-83, anddemolished the Keys Gate Knights79-29. They opened their regularseason on Nov. 19 with an 82-36routing of the MAST AcademyMakos.

Since becoming the Spartans’head coach in 2012, AnthonySerro has built the team around

this high-octane style of play. “Our style of play is so unique

to what most people do,” saidSerro. “We want every possessionboth offensively and defensivelyto be less than 12 seconds.” Hesays that the team aims to shootaround 80 shots per game, withhalf of those being three-pointattempts.

The relentless, fast style hasbeen paying off as the team iscoming off of a 20-win seasonwhere they averaged 84 points agame, the highest in Florida and11th highest in the nation. Theyalso won the District 15 champi-onship and were Region 4A final-ists, which helped lead to Serrobeing named the 4A-2A 2014Coach of the Year by The MiamiHerald.

One of the team’s key playershas been senior CJ Fisher, whorecently signed a Letter of Intent toplay for the University of NorthFlorida. Fisher averaged 34 points

a game last year and scored anastounding 44 points in the team’swin against Columbus. He is alsocurrently the highest scoring play-er in all of Florida and 9th overallin the nation.

Fisher is far from being the onlyhigh scorer on the team, as juniorSebastien Jean has been anotherplayer who consistently scores inthe double digits, and juniorsArmand del Castillo and PhilBrunson scored 16 and 11 points inthe win over Edison.

The Spartans’ remarkable depthcome from another unique coach-ing decision, as Serro prefers todress and use all 15 of his playersevery game, while most teamsonly use 7 to 8 players per game.

Serro says that he hopes for theteam to get every bit as far as it didlast year and to go even further. The school has also worked atattracting middle school basketballplayers to the Pace gym by hostingits second annual Catholic Middle

School Basketball Tournament onOctober 24-25 with six schoolsparticipating and Cushman Schooldefeating St. Mary CathedralSchool in the finals.

The Spartans boys varsity bas-ketball team played their next

home game against LaSalle onDecember 3. The boys junior var-sity team, who played their firstgame against the Edison RedRaiders on November 21 as well, will be joining the varsity teamagain against LaSalle.

Pace basketball star CJ Fisher Jr. signs with UNF

PACE HIGH senior CJ Fisher (center, seated) poses for a photowith his family and Pace basketball head coach Anthony Serro(far left) following his Letter of Intent signing to the University ofNorth Florida.

The Miami Laker staffPace High basketball standout

Charles (CJ) Fisher Jr., veneratesChicago Bulls star Derrick Rose tothe point where his coaches andteammates said he draws a com-parison to the NBA’s MVP.

Like Rose, he’s a point guard, can shoot and pass the ball like apro, the leading scorer on the teamwith 34 points per game and is aclutch shooter when the game ison the line.

His Spartans are off to a 6-0start and Fisher has built thebridge toward his college career.

Last week, Fisher, 18, signedhis Letter of Intent to play forUniversity of North Florida in2015, choosing to stay in his homestate and help develop the Ospreysinto one of the upper echelonteams in the Sunshine StateConference.

Heavily recruited by WestVirginia, Northeastern Universityand Stevenson University, Fishersaid he chose the University ofNorth Florida because head coachMatthew Driscoll’s system is thebest fit for him.

“My family and I took a visit tothe college and met with coachDriscoll and told us I will fit inwhat he wants to run,” Fisher said.“He said I can make the team bet-ter. The coaches there are great.”

Fisher, the team’s captain, isleaving his mark in high-schoolbasketball.

He scored a season high 38points against Booker T. Washing-ton last week, shooting 50 percentfrom the field and is leading thestate in scoring, according toMAXPREP.

If Fisher continues his scoringpace through the Spartans’ first

seven games of the regular season,he will be ranked 4th in the nation.

He scored a career high 48points against Florida Christianlast year and led Pace to one gameshy of the state tournament.

Fisher said his team, averaging86 points per game, is making astrong run at it again this season, the only difference is the playersare shooting better and makinggood decisions that limitturnovers.

Last year’s Miami Herald All-Dade First Team player said theoptimism with his team’s chancesgrows with each game.

Spartans’ head coach AnthonySerro said his team puts Fisher in agood position to score a lot ofpoints.

“He can shoot the ball reallywell,” Serro said.

Miami Lakes Rockies girl’ssoftball team goes from worstto first during Optimist season

It was February 2013 when 10young girls, mostly 8 to 9 yearsold, took the field at Miami LakesOptimist Park to play softball. The current softball program wasonly handling a 14 and youngerprogram because they were theonly girls that signed up. Theyounger girls (under 12) wereadvised to join baseball as analternative.

“I had signed up my daughterto play softball in hopes of gettinga girls team that she would enjoyplaying on. She had played bas-ketball before, but it was dominat-ed by boys, and I wanted her toplay with and against girls,” saidMarcos Gutierrez, assistant coachof the Miami Lakes Rockies.

Gutierrez, along with two otherdads made a commitment that sea-son that they would get this pro-gram off the ground and providethe girls with an opportunity toplay.

“I still remember our first prac-tice where only two of our girlscould throw from third to firstwithout the ball bouncing a fewtimes. I knew our work was cutout for us,” said Ed Londono, head coach of the Miami LakesRockies. “But little by little, theygot stronger and their confidencestarted to build. At season’s end,we were ready to take the field andcompete.”

In the fall of 2013, the youngteam competed against some inMiami Springs and Driftwood. Itwas a short season, but the girlsfinished the season 4-2. Theywere now ready for rec ball, a for-mal league, and joined the WestPines alliance in the Spring of2014. By this time, a second teamwas formed because of the grow-ing interest in Optimist softball.

“We were very young and Iknew that the competition level

would be significantly higher. Itwas going to be a major growingpain, and we needed to focus onthe learning experience and notthe win-loss column,” explainedLondono.

A “growing pain” was putting itmildly. Despite some highlightsthroughout the season, the teamwasn’t able to muster a single win.

The team was outmatched bytalent and experience. “I could seethat we were getting better. Thatwas very encouraging. Whenyou’re losing, it’s hard to appreci-ate that. Luckily, the girls hung inthere and the coaches remainedpatient,” added Londono.

Going into this season inSeptember, the girls became theMiami Lakes Rockies. Practicesdoubled up and the intensity wasincreased.

“There were things we neededto clean up defensively and weneeded the girls to be moreaggressive at the plate,” saidOscar Rodriguez, assistant coach. The team was now a year olderand much better. The Rockiesscrimmaged often with their sisterteam, the Lady Mustangs, to pre-pare for the season.

After going 1-1 to start the sea-son, the Rockies rattled off 8 con-secutive wins to finish the regularseason at 9-1 and in first place. Itwas a “worst to first” finish. Theteam includes Ceci Valle, EmilyMedina, Alyssa Crespo, CeciliaRodriguez, Sarah Gutierrez,Madison Aguilera, May Morales,Madison Lodono, Ashley Arleaga,Nicole Rodriguez and SabrinaRhea.

The Miami Lakes OptimistClub hopes to have a 12-under and10-under team in January 2015 tocomplement its 14-under pro-gram. For more information visitwww.miamilakesoptimist.org.

P.S. North prekindergarten teacherRossana Chiarella honored by LEGO

By R.A. RomeroThe Miami Laker staffRossana Chiarella, a prekinder-

garten teacher at Palm SpringNorth Elementary School (PSN)and local resident, was recognizedby the Fortune 500 company,Lego, for her work in successfullyincorporating Lego EducationSolutions in her classroom. Sheuses Lego Soft Brick Set and LegoDuplo Large Brick Set.

Lego currently has Chiarella'sbiography and photo on display ontheir website along with otherteachers who have found thatusing Legos in lesson plans havebeen beneficial for students.

“I chose Lego Education solu-tions because it is a good instru-ment for teaching any subject in aprekindergarten classroom,” saidChiarella. “They help me supportcreative thinking in children withdisabilities in areas of physical

ability, social-emotional growth, language, mathematics, sciencesand art.”

Chiarella has been teaching for22 years, a passion sparked by herstudies in psychology, completedat Barry University, and fueled byher love of working with specialeducation children. Despite havingthe credentials to pursue an admin-istrative role, Chiarella has chosento stay in the classroom where, shesays “I can generate the effectsthat education demands.”

At 6 years old, Chiarella’s otherpassion, space science, skyrocket-ed alongside the spacecraft thatlaunched from her hometown inPeru to the moon. Her love ofspace science and travel oftenmanifests itself in her teaching, one lesson plan in particular thatincluded video and photos fromChiarella’s own flight training atCivil Air Patrol Aerospace

Education Program.“My time has passed already.

But I have important things to doin the air. So what I’m going to dois teach the kids and maybe thosekids will be astronauts one day,”said Chiarella.

Chiarella’s passion is not loston her students. Luis, a four-year-old with learning disabilitiesstruggled through concepts ofteamwork. Utilizing her LegoEducation Solutions to introducegroup activities that includednegotiating, sharing and support-ing others, Luis improved.

“The first time we observedLuis’ sharing behavior representeda true a-ha moment in class,” saidChiarella.

LEGOLAND welcomed recog-nized teachers to visit for addition-al help on using Lego EducationSolutions in the classroom.

By Rene D. BasultoSpecial to The Miami LakerEach year in the weeks leading

up to Thanksgiving, MonsignorEdward Pace High School holdsits Tons of Love food drive to aidthose in need during the holidayseason and beyond. Every mem-ber of the Pace family from stu-dents, parents, teachers, and staffis asked to donate canned and non-perishable food that will help theneedy via five different localCatholic ministries.

The drive, started by SisterCarol Jean Willie over 25 yearsago, is spear-headed by Pace’sTheology Department and itsMission Club who work hard toensure the drive’s success.Students are encouraged to bringin donations, and there is a compe-tition between grades and theteachers over which grade levelcan bring in the most food. For thesecond straight year, the freshmen
