Tips to stay healthy on thehigh seas!

Spring break is almost here! Many families take advantage ofthe break from school for a well-deserved family vacation. A popu-lar choice is going on a cruise.

Living in the cruise capital ofthe world makes it easy to book avoyage, jump on a ship, and hit theopen waters. Before boarding, there are some precautions youshould take to make sure you don’tget sick on the high seas.

Over the last couple of years, there have been some reportedoutbreaks of norovirus on cruises.Recently, a ship had to return toport early because so many pas-sengers were sick. Norovirus isvery contagious and can be trans-mitted by coming into contact withcontaminated food or water, or bytouching a contaminated surface.

According to the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), the virus causes yourstomach or intestines or both to getinflamed leading to stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. The CDC states that it is the mostcommon cause of foodborne dis-ease outbreak in the country, and itcauses illness in 19 to 21 millionpeople, contributes to 56,000 to71,000 hospitalizations and 570-800 deaths annually.

There are precautions you cantake to lessen your chances ofcatching this virus. You shouldpractice proper hygiene by wash-ing your hands thoroughly withsoap and water. Always wash yourhands before eating, preparing orhandling food, and especially afterusing the toilet and changing dia-pers.

Antibacterial or alcohol-basedhand sanitizers can be used inaddition to hand washing. They

should not be used as a substitutefor washing with soap and water.

The following are symptoms ofNorovirus:

Diarrhea, throwing up, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches.

If you in fact have norovirusyou can feel extremely sick andvomit or have diarrhea multipletimes a day. This can easily lead todehydration. Signs of dehydrationare decrease in urination, drymouth and throat, and feelingdizzy when standing up.

There is no specific treatmentfor norovirus and it cannot behealed with medicine because it isa viral, not a bacterial infection. The best thing you can do to getbetter is to drink plenty of liquidsto replace the ones you have lost;this will also help prevent dehy-dration.

To stay hydrated, avoid drinksthat contain caffeine or alcohol.Sports drinks may help, but overthe counter rehydration fluids canbe more helpful in replacingimportant nutrients and minerals.

Most people with norovirus ill-ness get better within one to threedays. Although it is a short timeperiod, it is long enough to ruinyour vacation.

When going on that long-await-ed cruise, remember to alwayswash your hands and your willgreatly minimize your chance ofcatching anything and maximizeyour probability of having ahealthy and fun trip! Happy SpringBreak!

Voters to see tax consequenceson future county bond votes

Future Miami-Dade Countybond referendums will contain acaveat to voters: Approving thebond item will raise your taxes.

The Miami-Dade CountyCommission gave final approvalto an ordinance sponsored byCommissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. toinclude language in future bondmeasures specifying that the pro-posed bond would be “paid orsecured by taxes derived from theassessed value of property in theCounty.” A two-thirds majority ofthe Commission would be

required to waive the new lan-guage.

“This language will ensure thatvoters are aware that what they’revoting for will increase their prop-erty taxes,” Bovo said. “Historyhas shown that Miami-Dade citi-zens don’t have a problem payingfor something when they feel it isimportant enough, but as aCounty, I feel we owe it to votersto be as transparent as possible.”

The Park's Martial ArtsFederation began in 1965 whenGrand Master, Jung Soo Park, began teaching in South Korea fol-lowing his years of experiencewith the sport. He received the titleof Grand Master, meaning he iscertified through the South KoreanGovernment as a 9th degree blackbelt.

After being a body guard for theSouth Korean president and cap-tain of the Rok Navy, GrandMaster Park and his family immi-grated to the U.S. where the Parkfamily brought their talents andopened a school for martial arts inthe 1970's.

Since then, the Grand Master'schildren Master Cheong Park and

Master Shick Park have continuedtheir father's legacy, having prac-ticed martial arts for over 35 years.

Success runs in the Park family.Taekwon-Do and Judo are the onlymartial arts to be inducted into theOlympic sports and Shick Parkwas a part of the United StatesOlympic Committee for Taekwon-Do. He and other committee mem-bers hosted junior nationals andsenior nationals all over majorcities in USA. The tournamentswould draw up to 8,000 competi-tors at a time.

"Our focus in our schools ischaracter development and lifeskills. Every stu-dent is different and we want tobring out their best. Through themartial arts program they gainproper discipline and self confi-dence to excel in life."

American High’s softballteam undefeated for season

By David L. SnellingThe Miami Laker staffLast Fall, Sergio Fernandez

coached a softball travel leagueteam, the Miami Stars, to an unde-feated season that featured most ofhis players from American HighSchool.

Their success has spilled overto the Spring regular season, as thePatriots are 8-0 and armed withperhaps the best two hitters inMiami-Dade County, and a pitch-ing staff loaded with so much tal-ent that opposing teams were leftscratching their heads followingits stellar performances.

Facing their bitter districtrivals, Goleman High, ace pitcherAndrea Rincon (6-0, .129 ERA),led her team to a close victory in asee-saw game that continues todefine their rivalry.

“They took the lead first, thenwe took the lead, they took thelead and we finally led and wonthe game,” said Fernandez. “Itwas a very intense game, and wellcontested on both sides. It was atremendous game.”

The Patriots’ bats are hot led bythe one and two hitters in the line-up, shortstop AlexandriaFernandez, who is hitting .786 andthird baseman Kayleen Romerobatting .556.

“Alexandria is hitting the day-light out of the ball,” Fernandezsaid of his daughter. “AndKayleen is hot.”

Team captain Michelle Murchis batting .375 and is arguably oneof the best center-fielders inFlorida, Fernandez said.

American won its third consec-utive district championship lastyear and lost in the regional semi-finals.

With seven returning startersand more experience, the Patriotsare keeping their eyes on the big-ger prize – the state title.

“The big difference is girls whohave been playing for four years,”Fernandez said. “Anything shortof our goal is a disappointment for us.”

Fernandez said last year’sheartbreaking loss still is on hisplayers’ minds.

“They don’t want to have thatsame feeling again,” he said.

In baseball news:As of last week, Goleman

High’s baseball team was 5-0,including a 10-5 victory over divi-sion rival Hialeah Thoroughbreds, who eliminated the Gators fromthe regional semifinals last season.

Coach Jose Lopez said his teamis preparing for another challeng-ing week against Alonso andTracy Mourning, Sunset andMiami Beach, hoping his team cankeep its undefeated streak alive.

Lopez said his players’ batscame alive early in the regularseason and hope they can stay hot.

He said last year, when histeam scored at least four runs, theGators won but lost each timewhen they scored less than fourruns.

Top players pitcher ShawnCarrasco, third baseman KevinGomez and first baseman JoshuaGuia are the returning startersseeking to erase last year’s disap-pointing post season.

THE PACE SPARTANS Basketball Team salutes the crowd after the regional semi-finals victory athome against Gulliver.

Pace Spartan’s basketball team endsseason at 21-11 with a district title

By Anthony Serro, HeadCoach

Special to The Miami LakerMonsignor Edward Pace High

School’s Basketball season cameto an end Friday night, February21 in the Regional Final at CoralSprings Charter. While it may bedisappointing to have a season endwithout a championship, it was agreat run for everyone involved.

The Spartans finished with a21-11 record and won the districtregular season and tournamentchampionships, while finishing asthe highest scoring team in thestate at over 84 points per game, earning a top 10 ranking national-ly.

The 21 wins were a 12 game

improvement over last season thatended with the Spartans going 9-20 and losing in the district semi-finals.

In addition to the team accom-plishments, the growth of the play-ers was also a noticeable positivethat came from this season. JuniorC.J. Fisher and senior DannyDuarte each averaged 21 pointsper game.

Fisher had 47 points againstFlorida Christian and a 40 point,13 rebound effort in the DistrictChampionship against Booker T.Washington. The last of those 40points was a game-winning freethrow with 7 seconds left in thegame.

Duarte had four 30+ point

games and was a consistent pres-ence in the lineup each of the lasttwo years. Additionally, the devel-opment of sophomores SebastienJean, Don King, and Armand delCastillo gives reason for theSpartans to be excited about thefuture as well.

Newcomer Josh Ferguson andfreshman Raul Paula also will con-tinue to develop and make theirpresence felt on both sides of thefloor.

The season may have endedearlier than the team hoped, butthe future is bright! Look for the'Runnin’ Spartans' to keep the paceof the game fast and the shots willkeep coming in bunches! Is itNovember yet?
