FORMER MIAMI DOLPHINS running back Tony Nathan receives his proclamation from MiamiLakes elected officials (from left) Vice Mayor Tim Daubert, Councilmembers Frank Mingo, CeasarMestre and Nelson Rodriguez, Mayor Michael Pizzi and Councilmembers Manny Cid and TonyLama.

The Town of Miami Lakes hon-ored former Miami Dolphins run-ning back and longtime residentTony Nathan with a proclamationduring the January Town Councilmeeting.

Councilmember Manny Cidsponsored legislation to celebrateNathan’s life accomplishments

from his rise from high school andcollege in Alabama to the NFL,where he played in two SuperBowls.

Nathan’s personal life story wasbrought to the big screen in amovie entitled Woodland whichreflected on the racially-torn andturbulent period throughout the

1960s and 1970s in Birmingham,Alabama, where his high schoolfootball team helped ease racialtension.

Nathan also coached youthsports at the Miami LakesOptimist Cub.

Manny Cid cancels reelectionbid; enters 2016 Mayor’s racemade preserving our Town very

much a personal priority,” Cidsaid. “Those experiences and thehundreds of similar stories in ourTown is what compelled me to runto ensure that we maintain thosevery same dreams and desires.”

Summary of Town Council actions on January 5to observe.

The troop placed their entirehistory of camping and jamboreepictures, plaques, awards, trophiesand equipment in a trailer outsideof Miami Lakes during construc-tion of the youth center, which wasonce vandalized.

Representatives of Troop 49said the Mary Collins CommunityCenter is a good place to conducttheir business but they wouldrather do it at a place they oncecalled home.

The Miami Lakes UnitedSoccer Club also felt it was leftwithout a home after personaltrainers and their clients occupiedmost of the space and exerciseequipment at Royal Oaks Park,

forcing the teams to practice atNorman and Jean Reach Park inPalm Springs North.

Council members approvedPizzi’s recommendation for townstaff to draft a multi-year contractwith the soccer club to use RoyalOaks Park for their practices againand other additional recreationalareas within Miami Lakes, andprevent vendors charging peoplefor their services while using thetown’s parks until they agree to arevenue-sharing covenant with thetown.

The plan also calls for the ven-dors to be insured and conduct abackground check on the personaltrainers, which is a town require-ment for anyone doing business inthe parks where children are play-

ing.According to Town Manager

Alex Rey, about 80 percent of kidsin the soccer club’s recreationalprogram, includingCouncilmembers Tony Lama’s andManny Cid’s kids, are MiamiLakes residents.

In other town business:• Lawmakers gave their final

approval for an ordinance to pro-vide more clear regulation of non-conforming uses for structures andsite improvements, includingfences, which may be replaced foraesthetic reasons without losingtheir nonconforming status.

Council members approved anamendment to the ordinance madeby Pizzi that if a fence is destroyedduring a hurricane or other natural

disaster, it can be rebuilt using thesame code standard as the old one.

Pizzi said fences and otherstructures in the West Lakes areawere grandfathered in the town’snew land development code but ifthe property owners tore themdown, they would have to replacethem under the town’s standards.

The new ordinance would allowthem to replace the same structureif a hurricane was responsible forthe damage.

• Lawmakers gave their initialapproval for an ordinance toamend the current budget by carry-ing over the prior year’s estimatedsurplus to fund the completion ofcapital projects that were budgetedand commenced in the prior fiscalyear, allocate funds for settlingPizzi’s reinstatement lawsuit andallocate funds from the town’sfund balance to reimburse FEMAfor hurricane related expense dis-allowances.

• Lawmakers approved a reso-lution to create a Miami LakesSports Hall of Fame at the newMiami Lakes Optimist ParkClubhouse, which will honor ath-letes, coaches community mem-bers and teams from the town fortheir outstanding contributions orachievements in sports.

• Council members approved aconditional use site plan for a pri-vate educational facility at 15050N.W. 79 Court in Miami LakeBusiness Park West.

The Graham Companies is leas-ing a portion of the office buildingto Agmus Ventures for a privatecollege called Ana G. MendezUniversity. The site plan calls foroffice space for up to 18 employ-ees, classrooms for academicclasses and meetings with groupsbetween 15 and 25 students. Theschool can register a maximum of200 students.

The college is leasing the build-ing on a temporary basis until theinstitution’s permanent home, a

new building in the Business Park,is ready.

• Council members approved aresolution to amend the town’sCommunity and Leisure ServicesRules and Regulation for a newuser free schedule with the open-ing of the new youth center facili-ty and picnic shelters at the park.

The amendment to the feeschedule is necessary to includethe new facilities which are pro-jected to generate up to an addi-tional $75,000 in revenues thatwill be utilized to offset directfacility and maintenance costs.

• Lawmakers approvedCouncilmembers Manny Cid’s andCeasar Mestre’s recommendationto name a street after BreannaVergara, the 10-year-old girl whodied after she collapsed during adance class from a heart condition.

Cid said the Breanna VergaraFoundation has had an incredibleimpact through South Florida, including the first annual 5k walkthat saw thousands of people comeout and of her memory.

Cid originally sought to co-des-ignate Commerce Way as BreannaVergara Foundation Way butCouncilmember Nelson Rodriguezsuggested N.W. 164 Street whichleads to her home and nearbyRoyal Oaks Park where a tree canbe planted in her memory.

In addition, lawmakers alsoapproved Councilmember TonyLama’s recommendation torequire coaches at the town’s parksto learn CPR and other life-savingmethods and how to use a fibrilla-tor in an event of an emergency.

• Lawmakers approvedRodriguez’s recommendation toask Miami-Dade County to add anALS Transport Unit at the newWest Miami Lakes fire station.Rodriguez, a Coral Gables fire-fighter, said the unit is needed withthe development of theDunnwoody Lake property, adding482 homes.

Straightforward TipsFor Small Businesses

Can Mentorship Bridge theSkills Gap?

One of the biggest stories comingout of the Great Recession is thelack of qualified job applicants formany semi-to highly skilled posi-tions in a variety of industries. Theskills gap has been talked about bybusiness leaders, politicians andeconomists for several years, andyet the reality of jobs goingunfilled is still a major factor in theeconomic recovery. But couldthere be a solution to this problemthat is going unnoticed and under-utilized?

What’s Causing the Gap?While there is consensus among

most experts that there is a skillsgap in the job market, there arevarying beliefs on the cause of thisgap.

A survey by TEKsystems of ITprofessionals and leaders found adisconnect between their reasonsfor jobs currently being open andindividuals not applying. Leadersin IT believe that a lack of skills isthe central reason behind the gap, while professionals in the industrybelieve the problem has more to dowith employers expecting toomuch in their job description.

Another report by CareerBuilderfound that employers (55%) andjob seekers (37%) agree that edu-cation gaps in particular areas arethe leading cause for the skills gap. However, job seekers believe thatgaps in expectations surroundingwages, as well as job requirementsthat are above entry level require-ments, play a large role in unfilledjobs.Could Mentorship be the Answer?

For years, apprenticeships playeda significant role in training thenext generation of workers. In thelast few decades, the changingdynamics of the workplace havedramatically slowed this practice

of teaching.Today, mentorships are often

thought of as a relationship be-tween a younger and more experi-enced professional that helps theyoung professional develop andlearn more about their industry. But what if businesses and jobseekers thought of mentorships as away to train new employees whomay not have the specific skills theemployer is looking for, but havethe work ethic and desire to learn?

Some business leaders may behesitant to invest in educatingemployees who have the potentialto leave and take this valuabletraining to another business or pos-sibly even a competitor. However, the CareerBuilder report goes on tosay that “An overwhelming 92% ofemployees become more loyal to acompany that invests in trainingthem, adding that they are morelikely to stay at a company that val-ues them in this way.”

There is no question that theresponsibility to end the skills gapfalls on employees and employersalike. As they enter the hiring pro-cess, job candidates should be ableto clearly show that they have adesire to learn and are willing tospend time receiving training fromthe best people in the business sothey can help the company be suc-cessful. Leaders in businessesshould begin to develop programsutilizing their best employees totrain new hires on the skills they’llneed to be successful. As businesses continue to look for

ways to fill their unfilled job open-ings, mentorships should play alarger role in helping new employ-ees be effective additions to thecompany. The skills gap is a chal-lenge that can be overcome byemployers and job seekers so longas both are willing to spend timeteaching and learning.

The committee created the per-fect environment for studentswho needed a break from all thepreparation for finals week. Thespecial occasion featured typicalJewish foods such as a latka"bar," sufganiyot, a "Create YourOwn Smoothie" station, and brainfood such as graham crackers andfruit.

“We welcomed everyone tothis event which is meant to cele-brate the season and relax fromall the stress finals week brings,”said Zajac, a planner of the event,a member of Hillel, a Jewish stu-dent organization, at FIU. “TheHanukkah Study Break was sucha huge success! There was musicand mingling and the atmospherewas so wonderful.”

Hillel at FIU will be openingtheir office towards the end ofSpring Term next year in ParkingGarage 6, where the event washeld.

“We look forward to hostingthis event again next year andeven bringing out a free masseuseto provide massages for all stu-dents,” said Zajac. “Hillel has bigplans for its future, and we hopeeveryone can be a part of it andwatch it grow.”

Hialeah Miami Lakes recognizedfor one of highest graduation rates

Miami-Dade County PublicSchools (M-DCPS) held a pressconference on Wednesday,January 6, to announce the releaseof the 2015 graduation rates anddiscuss how the District per-formed. Hialeah Miami Lakes(HML) had one of the highestgraduation rate increases in theDistrict and reached an all-timehigh of 84.9 percent for the 2014-2015 academic year, exceeding theDistrict (78.1) and State (77.8)average.

This 6.7 percentage pointincrease from last year’s rate of78.2 marks the highest graduationrate HML has achieved since theFlorida Department of Educationbegan tracking graduation statis-tics with modern methods. Since2008’s rate of 52.5, HML hasmade a remarkable 32.4 percent-age point increase.

Principal Eric Acosta said,“Achieving these results is noteasy. It requires perseverance, patience, and vision. The remark-able feat that has been accom-plished over the last seven yearswould not have been possiblewithout the unwavering dedicationand commitment of our outstand-ing teachers, counselors, supportstaff, and administrators. I havewitnessed the resolve of our facul-ty and staff, and I am extremelyproud of the work they have doneand continue to do on behalf of ourstudents.”

Over the last several years,HML has completely revamped

the curriculum of the school byadding innovative choice pro-grams such as Digital MediaTechnology, Entrepreneurship,Law Studies, and it’s Nationallyrecognized iPrep Academy.

“Creating a suite of courses thatcultivates the academic curiosityof students, undoubtedly creates aschool climate where teaching andlearning is the top priority,” saidAcosta.

Clearly, something is working. Not only has the graduation ratedramatically improved, studentattendance has also soared. Theschool had a 96.02 percent atten-

dance rate during the first quarterof this academic year, up almostthree percentage points from lastyear, according to Acosta. Thistrend is expected to continue withthe addition of the AP CapstoneProgram for the 2016-2017 aca-demic year.

For more information regardingthe programs available at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior, visitwww.hmltrojans.org.

HML PRINCIPAL, Eric Acosta, is pictured at a MDCPS pressconference to discuss the 32.4 percent increase since 2008 ofgraduating students.
