DR. CAROLINE HOHENSEE (CENTER FRONT) AND MHA 710 CLASS

On  October  9th,  Dr.  Caroline  Hohensee  and  her  MHA  710  class  teamed  up  with  PresbyterianHospital  to  lead  a  community  volunteer  project  at  a  Crisis  Ministry.

Crisis  Ministry  is  a  non-­‐profit  organiza,on  in  CharloIe  commiIed  to  providing  assistance  andadvocacy  for  people  in  financial  crisis,  helping  them  to  move  toward  self-­‐sufficiency.    The  classreceived,  sorted,  and  hung  donated  items  for  the  store.  Upon  arriving,  the  clothing  racks  were

FROM  THE  DEAN’S  DESK

         I  am  ohen  asked  about  job  opportuni,es  for  students.  While  most  Pfeiffer  health  students  are  gainfullyemployed  in  health-­‐related  jobs,  our  academic  programs  are  increasingly  aIrac,ng  workers  who  areentering  the  field  for  the  first  ,me.  They  are  interested  in  either  changing  careers  or  taking  advantage  ofthe  an,cipated  job  growth  in  the  healthcare  industry  over  the  next  10  years.    Regardless  of  mo,va,on,students  can  benefit  from  the  health-­‐related  programs  Pfeiffer  offers.

         In  the  first  instance,  I  would  recommend  that  persons  who  are  interested  in  changingcareers   consider   our   health   cer,ficate   program   in   Long-­‐term   Care   or   Prac,ceManagement   that   are   offered   through   the   Center   for   Professional   Advancement.Anyone  who  has  an  associate  degree  can  obtain  a  cer,ficate  in  one  year  that  wouldqualify  them  for  placement  in  a  variety  of  mid-­‐level  clinical  sejngs.  Credits  accrued  inthe  cer,ficate  programs  can  be  applied  toward  the  full  Bachelor’s  degree.  This  strategywill  also  work  for  students  who  have  a  Bachelor’s  degree  in  Business  or  other  non-­‐healthrelated  disciplines.

       For  students  who  are  employed,  and  would  like  to  advance  their  current  careers,  Isuggest  using  the  internship  or  prac,cum  experience.  This  would  allow  you  to  explorework   environments   capable  of   providing  new  and  different   job   skills     designed   toincrease  your  value  to  the  market.  For  example,  this  spring,  the  Department  of  HealthAdministra,on  will  offer  MHA795,  Applied  Research.  This  class  can  be  subs,tuted  for  the  MHA  790Prac,cum  in  Health  Administra,on.    Dr.  Sanggon  Nam  will  teach  the  course  during  which  students  willpar,cipate  in  a  research  project  with  a  major  medical  group.  This  is  a  great  opportunity  for  seriousstudents  to  learn  research  design  skills.    The  course  will  prepare  students  to  adapt  basic  researchfindings  and  applied  research  theory  to  specific  situa,ons.    The  knowledge  gained  in  this  course  willbe  very  aIrac,ve  to  major  employers.    Any  student  considering  pursuing  further  graduate  educa,on,for  example,  at  the  doctoral  level,  should  certainly  take  advantage  of  this  new  course  offering.

I   can’t   stress   enough   the   importance   of   establishing   good   rapport   and   consistent  workingrela,onships  with  your  advisors  so  that  they  get  to  know  you  and  your  career  goals.  Developposi,ve  rela,onships  with  the  faculty  in  your  department,  and  seek  opportuni,es  to  networkwith  your  classmates.    They  are  an  excellent  source  for  job  leads.    I  will  con,nue  to  publish  allknown  job  opportuni,es  in  Clipboard  Notes  for  internships,  networking  events,  educa,onalprograms   at   other   universi,es   and   academic   compe,,ons   that   can   all   lead   to   futureemployment  opportuni,es.    Par,cipate  in  professional  student  organiza,ons,  and  rememberthat  Pfeiffer  students  can  use  the  College  Central  Network  Job  Line  at  no  cost.  .    Contact  thejob  line  at  www.collegecentral.com/Pfeiffer.  

Finally,  it  is  important  to  keep  in  mind  that  there  are  many  jobs  current  available;  although,not  necessarily.....RTP.    In  this  regard,  don't  be  afraid  to  move!  Take  note  of  Valerie  David’sstory  on  page  six.    When  you  finish  your  educa,on,  go  where  the  job  is.    It  is  ohen  not  possibleto  'make  the  job  come  to  you'...although  such  cases  can  occur.    Prepare  yourself  –  Researchall  possible  opportuni,es    –  Go  where  you  are  called  to  serve.

PFEIFFER GRADUATE STUDENT ACCEPTS POSITION IN QATAR

VALERIE DAVID

Valerie  David  is  a  Clinical  Supervisor  of  Respiratory  CareServices  at  the  Cone  Health  System  in  Greensboro,  NorthCarolina.  She  is  a  leader  with  demonstrated  exper,se  inthe  areas  of  clinical  management,  leadership  training  anddevelopment,  performance  improvement,  and  strategicplanning.  Valerie  has  over  25  years  of  experience  and  success  as  a  leader  and  manager  of  clinical  services  including  acute  care,  ambulatory  care,  and  home  health.  She  led  numerous  performance  improvement  and  quality  improvement  ini,a,ves  as  well  as  mul,disciplinary  teams  toachieve  performance    improvement  in  clinical  outcomes,  staffand  pa,ent  sa,sfac,on.

Valerie  has  a  Bachelor’s  Degree  in  Public  Health  from  the  University  of  North  Carolina  at  Greensboro.  She  is  an  ac,ve  member  of  the  American  Associa,on  of  Respiratory  Care,  the  NorthCarolina  Respiratory  Care  Society,  and  is  a  Na,onal  Asthma  Educator.  

Valerie’s  love,  passion,  and  dedica,on  to  excellence  led  her  to  furtherher  educa,on  in  Health  Care  Administra,on  at  Pfeiffer  University  in  CharloIe,  North  Carolina.  She  is  in  her  last  year  of  the  MHA  programand  will  graduate  in  August  2013.  

In  October,  Valerie  will  begin  an  exci,ng  job  as  Project  Leader  for  the  de-­‐velopment  and  implementa,on  of  a  450  bed  Women’s  Hospital  in  Doha,Qatar.  The  hospital  is  part  of  the  Hamad  Medical  Corpora,on  and  willopen  next  spring.  She  has  signed  a  two-­‐year  contract  and  is  looking  for-­‐ward  to  a  fabulous  opportunity  to  learn  and  grow  in  health  care  man-­‐agement.

Pfeiffer’s  Department  of  Health  Administra,on  prepares  servantleaders  to  help  shape  the  future  of  healthcare  locally,  na,onallyand  globally.    Valerie  is  a  great  success  story  and  we  wish  her  well.

Dr.  Dianne  Daniels,  Dr.  Miller  and  Michael  Vaccaro,RN,  BSN,  MHA/MBA  aIended  the  North  CarolinaNurses  Associa,on  Awards  Luncheon  Celebra,onheld  in  Concord  on  October  3,  2012.    Dr.  Daniels  graduated  from  the  first  NCNA  Leadership  AcademyClass  of  2012  and  Michael,  a  graduate  of  Pfeiffer’sMHA/MBA  program,  was  recognized  as  the  2012  Nurseof  the  Year  in  the  area  of  Administra,on.    Daniels  andVaccaro  are  excellent  Pfeiffer  nurse  leaders,  and  we  are  excited  about  their  accomplishments.

NEWS FROM THE NURSING DEPARTMENTThe   Nursing   Department   dedicated   its   new   suite   of   offices   andlabs     in  the  Harris  Building  during  Pfeiffer’s  Homecoming  weekend.President  Mike  Miller  gave  remarks,  and  visitors  were  treated  to  a  tourof  the  new  facili,es.    The  Department  was  also  recognized  this  monthas   a  Hallmark  Workplace.   The  NC  Nurses  Associa,on  Hallmarks   ofHealthy  Workplaces   recogni,on  program  was   created   to   recognizeworkplaces  with  posi,ve  environments  for  nurses  in  North  Carolina.We  are  proud  of  this  NCNA  seal  of  approval.

The  Junior  Nursing  Class  of  2014  held  its  White  Coat  Ceremony  on  October  5,  2012  in  the  Stokes  CommunityRoom.    The  White  Coat  Ceremony  signifies  the  beginningof  the  student’s  journey  into  professionalism  as  they  enterclinical  studies.  Dr.  Miller  offered  words  of  encouragement.    “You  have  come  a  long  way  since  yourarrival  at  Pfeiffer  and  you  should  be  very  proud  of  your  accomplishments.From  this  day  forward  you  will  be  recognized  as  a  valued  member  of  thehealth  professions.    Your  clothing  will  become  an  outward  symbol  of  theclinical  training  you  have  received  and  the  service  you  are  now  entrusted  torender  to  your  future  pa,ents.”    Family  and  friends  joined  in  the  rite  of  passage  celebra,on  which  began  last  year  with  the  Class  of  2013.  The  ceremony  was  ini,ated  by  Dr.  Mark  McCallum,  Interim  Dean  for  Arts  andScience.    He  aIended  again  this  year  to  lend  his  con,nued  support  for  the  program.    Members  of  the  Class  of  2014  include:    Kasey  Cain,  AmberCranford,  Savanna  Culp,  Courtney  Efird,  Joanna  Hathcock,  Jacquelyn  Hill,Amanda  Josiah,  Sarah  Koon,  Alexandra  Makris,  Alexa  Mamakos,  Jill  Maykut,Mckenzie  Miller,  Melissa  Roberts,  Megan  Stout,  Abby  Thompson  and  SarahYates.    Congratula,ons  to  the  Nursing  Department  for  presen,ng  such  a  fine  junior  class.

The  Grandover  Resort  was  the  regal  sejng  forthe   first   Pfeiffer   Gems   event.   Professor   JoelVickers,  re,red  Coach  Joe  Ferebee,  and  the  lateAssistant   Professor   Ray   Harrington   were   allhonored  for  their  extraordinary  contribu,onsover   the   course   of   extended   careers   withthe  University.  Vernease  Miller  was  given  theprivilege   of   introducing   Dr.   Vickers.   In   herremarks,  she  noted  that  Dr.  Vickers   is  a   true‘gem’  because  of  his  insight  and  vision;  leader-­‐ship;  energy;  warm  and  invi,ng  spirit;  and  hispassion  for  people.    She  also  complimentedand  thanked  Mrs.  JeanneIe  Vickers  for  herquiet   behind-­‐the-­‐scenes   presence.   Mrs.Vickers  has  been  a  tremendous  supportto   faculty   and   students,   and   isaffec,onately   referred   to   as   thedepartment  “den  mother”.    

Dr.   Vickers   received   a   plaquefrom   the   University   anda   framed       photograph   ofhimself  in  academic  regaliafrom  the  Department.

Exci,ng  things  are  taking  place  in  the  Department  of  Health  andExercise  Science.    First,  the  Department’s  name  was  changed  at  thelast  Faculty  Assembly  mee,ng  from  Exercise  Science  to  Health  andExercise  Science.    The  major  is  now  part  of  the  Division  of  Health-­‐Related  Programs  and  Programs;  including  'health'  in  the  name  willbeIer  reflect  the  emphasis  on  preven,on,  health  and  wellness  pro-­‐gramming  that  is  already  part  of  the  major’s  curriculum.

Secondly,  Dr.  Blake  Jus,ce,  Assistant  Professor,  is  in  his  second  yearat  Pfeiffer.    He  recently  had  a  book  chapter  published  in  WeightManagement by  Gaskill,  P.,  Mohr,  D.J.,  &  Townsend.    Dr.  Jus,ce  isvery  passionate  about  preparing  students  for  careers  in  fitness  andhealth  promo,on.  

Dr.  Vinson  Sutlive  is  in  his  12th  year  of  service  to  Pfeiffer.    He  is  a  fullProfessor  who  is  highly  respected  by  his  colleagues  as  an  academicleader   and   expert   in   the   scien,fic   study   of   the   structure   andfunc,on  of  the  human  body.    He  has  been  granted  sabba,cal  leave  forthe  spring  2013  semester  to  conduct  a  major  research  study  on  “Anasto-­‐mosis:   Three   Unique   Partnerships   that   Helped   Shape   the   Course   ofModern  Medicine”.    The  informa,on  obtained  from  this  research  will  be  usedto  inform  his  teaching  and  and  enhance  the  mentoring  of  students  when  he  returns  to  the  classroom.

The  Exercise  Science  curriculum  is  science-­‐based  and  requires  all  students  to  take  general  andupper  level  laboratory  science  courses,  including  biology,  chemistry,  anatomy  and  physiology,  aswell  as  a  exercise  physiology,  kinesiology/biomechanics,    exercise  tes,ng  and  prescrip,on.

An  important  component  of  the  major  is  that  all  students  engage  in  some  type  of  undergraduate  researchproject.  Students  are  responsible  for  the  design,  data  collec,on,  and  analysis  of  the  research  project.  In  addi,on,all  majors  complete  a  field  experience  at  an  off-­‐campus  facility.

Richard  J.  Stull  Student  Essay  Compe,,on  in  Healthcare  Management.    The  purpose

of  the  compe,,on  is  to  s,mulate  and  demonstrate  the  ability  of  future  healthcare
