3|MINISTER'S MESSAGE

"...the day came

when a shift needed

to occur within

me, which created

an energy that

declared, '!is

church reflects

where I live…this is

where my soul calls

home….I want

to place a value

on this.' I started

asking the leaders of

my church, 'What

can I do for you?

Where do you need

my talent, my time

and my treasures?'"

Rev. Temple Hayes

It seems to me when we move into the Holy-day season, we seem more inclined than ever to share our good with our fellow human beings, our communities and our spiritual homes. We are fortunate in this human body that at times our good can be immediately measured, such as the attitude that we carry with us on Christmas Day….stopping for a stranger, giving money to the homeless, or sharing more abundance with our spiritual sources. Often we say, "Wow, if people could just be this way all year long!" !e Holy-days often feel like the mantra at Disneyland, “!e happiest place on earth.” A simple spiritual gesture of a smile has immediate results, for the energy of the smile brings a welcomed smile in return. !e Law of Reciprocity is always working in our lives.

We are ever-evolving at First Unity Campus ,representing a thriving group of amazing people and talents within our church home and our organization. Our church reminds me often of my church in Fort Lauderdale where I attended actively as a ministerial student. For the first couple of years, it was evident that I was looking from the paradigm of “What’s in this for me? How can I heal, how can I change, will the chaplains be available to me, will the minister be here for me?"…all part of a quest as a spiritual seeker. However, the day came when a shift needed to occur within me, which

created an energy that declared, "!is church reflects where I live…this is where my soul calls home….I want to place a value on this." I started asking the leaders of my church, "What can I do for you? Where do you need my talent, my time and my treasures?"

David Owen Ritz, creator of Keys to the Kingdom said, “Giving to our church home is a statement of the priority we place on our spiritual growth.”

!ere is an old axiom which says, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” Most people see this as two separate ind i v idua l s , and it certainly

can be. However, think of it as you, the same person. Spirituality is so amazing when the teacher within you and me appears and we start to live the life as leaders and role models. We evolve beyond the theories and into the “proof is in the pudding.”

So for those of you that have been asking, "Rev. Temple, what can I do for First Unity?" my answer would be for you to be part of our five-week series "Living the Greater Life, Faith in Action" beginning October 26 and ending with guest speaker Mary Manin Morrissey on November 23.

!is series and all the activities which will go with it are designed to change all of our lives,

Living the Greater Life

“In your spiritual quest you are seeking to establish yourself a unitive relationship with the divine flow. You can never really

achieve this level of consciousness until giving becomes the main thrust of your life."

– Eric Butterworth, Spiritual Economics

How appropriate that we are creating a series right after Spirit Expressing to carry us into the !anksgiving/Holy-day season. So many of you through the years have asked, ”Why stop here? Let’s go further.”

In Gratitude

Rev. Helen Hornaday,Spiritual Education Director

“To everything there is season, and a time for every purpose under the sun.”Ecclesiastes 3:1

I feel deep appreciation and gratitude during this holiday season and every day.

How wonderful it is to live in a world full of possibilities and opportunities! How great it is to live in a country of diversity, where we can make choices for our own personal freedom. How fabulous is it to be part of a community here at First Unity that is growing and expanding, loving and accepting of each of us, right where we are in this moment.

I am grateful for the teachers who show up and are willing, committed and excited to share their wisdom and knowledge and to support and encourage each of us as we walk our paths in consciousness. How grateful I am for all the students who feel and respond to the urging of their spirits to come to class where they are

open to receive and to give of their own unique energy to infuse and create a class synergy.

Imagine such a place! It is right here for you. Whatever you are seeking – truth, creativity, prosperity, health, new friendships, stronger relationships, loving connections, how to connect with God in a deeper way, meditation and prayer, new ideas, letting go what doesn’t serve you, dreams and desires, a safe place to be you.

Tune in to your heart's desire. You are invited to join any of the multitude of classes we o"er. We are thrilled to welcome you and share your precious time as we learn and expand together.

13WORKSHOPS & CLASSES |

I t's true that the days are at their shortest, and a long winter's nap could happen, but here we are in Florida, celebrating with confidence that the moon will not

display the beauty of a new fallen-snow this holiday season. And with the appreciation and gratitude of our balmy winters, Christmas at Wings cannot be confined to indoors this year. Meet us on the deck just outside the co"ee bar, where fun, music, fellowship, and treats will be abundant, beginning Sunday, November 23.

Watch for seasonal selections from the team in our Wings Co"ee Bar—they're sure to delight us with drinks that reflect the taste temptations of the season...think pumpkin, or peppermint, or cinnamon...Sugar plums dancing in your head?

New gift ideas are arriving each day. Be sure to stop in and bring your list. If you listen closely, you might hear the prancing and pawing of little hooves...that would be the residents of our new animal puppet department. Bring in the little ones to fully enjoy this experience!

Wings will be open seven days a week for your holiday shopping and sipping pleasure. !e co"ee bar is open to serve you at 8 am, and the retail angels arrive at 10 am. We close at 9:30 pm on weekdays and at 6 pm on weekends. Your purchases will be cheerfully gift-wrapped by certified bookstore angels at no charge, beginning on Sunday, December 7.

Your CommUniteam in Action

At the time of this writing we are beginning our homeless outreach program. !ere are many thousands of homeless people in Pinellas County, and the numbers of homeless are increasing. With so many foreclosures, many families are becoming homeless. !ey include children under 16 years of age. !e homeless population also consists of veterans or mentally ill or substance abuse individuals.

!e agencies we are helping are ASAP Homeless Services and Westchase/Turning Point. ASAP provides many services including: walk-in help, emergency shelter, temporary and transitional shelter. Westchase/Turning Point provides emergency shelter for single men with substance abuse problems.

CommUniteam is also planning an early morning feed for homeless day laborers who usually cannot eat before beginning work.

Y4-* /4'"#(4'$ "*& '&&/&/ #4 S-%%4*# 4-* !4,&:&$$ 4-#*&"3!. We will be collecting donations of: clothing (for men, women, children - including undergarments, socks and shoes.) New or used in good condition, please.

size items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant [lite or scent free] razors, feminine hygiene products, hairbrushes, combs, and ponytail holders. Cash and checks are also welcome.

!e deadline for providing donated goods is early November. CommUniteam will then assist during our regular !anksgiving outreach to provide !anksgiving dinners to those in need.

COMMUNITEAM IS GROWING!

We have grown in size from 3 volunteers to 27, and we can utilize many more volunteers to reach out and help others in the community and the world. Please watch your Sunday bulletins and listen for announcements regarding our next outreach project, which will focus on helping the elderly/special needs people in our community. !e easiest way to get involved is to attend one of our regular meetings, which are the second Monday of each month from 6 to 7 pm in the Conference room. We hope to see you there!

A very big thank you to the First Unity community and to others in our neighborhood for your support of our outreach programs. With your generous support, CommUniteam was able to donate more than $8,000 to Help A Child, Inc. to help abused children in our community.

17|CHAPLAIN CORNER

On Sunday, December 7, we will hold a Chaplain orientation for those individuals who are feeling the call to step forward into this spiritual path and become a Chaplain in 2009.

We will hold two orientations, and you need only attend one. December 7 or December 21, 12:45 to 1:45 pm in the Sanctuary.

!ese sessions will describe in detail the one-year commitment which each Chaplain makes, the training session schedule, and the expectations of what being a Prayer Chaplain can mean to you. You will find Chaplain tables in Friendship Hall at various times prior to both orientation dates, with sign-up sheets and further information. Attending an orientation session does not obligate you to move forward with the program, but it is the first step toward that possible outcome.

I look forward with excitement and delicious anticipation, knowing that those who respond to this inner calling are in the right place at the right time to make this leap of faith. I can promise you a deepening of your faith, an unfoldment of your divinity at a greater level, and a connection with others that are

there to love and support you on your personal, spiritual path.Being a First Unity Chaplain is an inner journey of discovery

and growth. Are you ready for the bliss that awaits you? If you have been a member of First Unity Church for at least one year, take this to prayer and see if your heart is saying, “Yes!”

In Love and Light,

Daybree !oms, Chaplain Coordinator

Chaplain Corner!e First Unity Chaplain program is celebrating its 5th anniversary! Yes, the first dedication of 19 Chaplains occurred on December 7, 2003.
