In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation Question 1:

Page 2: Mediaevaluation 4-pptxx-120420044800-phpapp01

This is a common convention used to create various emotional effects towards the audience. We also used the convention by adding non digetic sinister music at fast pace at the start to create an sinister effect, with this the protagonists life is shown representing an overall image of it.

Sound/Music

Camera Angles/ Camera Shots Camera Angle: There’s one camera angle we used which is high angle to show the protagonists friend dead: this creates an effect of a vulnerable person and powerless. Which a dead person actually is.

Camera Shots: We used different shots according to matching scenes where it creates the effect we wanted. One of them is close up shot which shows prominent detail & facial expression of a character as a means of creating intimacy and audience engagement with the thoughts and emotions of the character. In our product we show a dead person, a crying person & hands full of blood.

Camera Shots: Long -shot has also been used when the protagonist leaves their house shows you where they live. (Gives you an idea about their living environment.)

The close up shot has been also used in “Black Swan”, to create a striking effect of the character. This is something we also did in our product.

Characters:

You always have a protagonist who is deeply affected by something and at first is lost,

unsure of what's happening. Plus they often have other people with them i.e. parent , friend, family who are also involved in the

same situation.

In our media product we used this convention and decided that our protagonist will have 2 characters along with themselves : A close friend who dies and a mother who is injudicious making the protagonists life more rough than it already is from losing a friend.

Typical Plot:

Nearly in all psychological thrillers you have similar plots which is: either the protagonist is haunted/ being followed by something or they see someone dead, additionally no one around them wants to believe it, which possible makes them depressed because of that they’re going mad themselves. A lot of the times it’s to do with supernatural.

This is similar to the plot in “the invisible” where it also has to do with someone’s death of a teenager.

In our media product we decided to use both kind of plots , so the protagonist has lost someone and starts seeing this dead person and feels as if they’re haunted. Along with it the protagonist have a mother who smokes and is an alcoholic , behaves careless towards her, is negligent to her. This adds to the part of the plot where no one understands or believes the protagonists issue.

EVALUATION QUESTION 2:How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our product the main group represented a teenager girls & one female adult:

Age: In our product the teenager girl is shown to be emotional, seems to have a though life. This is a stereotypical factor we used about teenagers being emotional and seeing life as hard, however we made the protagonist who is one of the teenagers life to be shown truly hard. The female adult who is the mum and is shown to be in 30’s is represented of a complete opposite from stereotypical adult . A stereotypical adult is known as: serious, concerned over children however the adult in our product is shown to be unconcerned over their child & more self centred.

Gender:All three characters are females however not all three of them are represented as stereotypical females.

The protagonist is shown to have some stereotypical female characteristics as she is shown to be emotional due to her friends death. Also as she is taking a laundry basket to a laundrette shows some domestic work.

However, the mother seems to be not as stereotype due to the fact she seems self-centred, smokes & drinks. These are factors which are usually not expecting from a female, instead from a male. This is because smoking & drinking signify violence, something unusual for women.

Question 5: How did you attract/ address your audience?

We attracted the audience in several different ways which are age, gender and the & plot.

Age: We used teenagers as the character group as a lot of psychological thrillers have teenagers as characters e.g. “the butterfly affect” , plus having characters of the same age as the audience makes it more interesting & easier for the audience to understand what’s happening.

Gender: We decided to use a girl because female’s are often represented to be innocent and vulnerable, and having such person as the “victim” in the psychological thriller makes it more striking.

Plot/ Storyline: The plot attracts the audience because looking at it in overall we have used teenagers , factors as relationships with different people & lifestyle. As we also have teenagers as our target audience these factors are common to teenagers making it more interesting towards teenagers.

EVALUATION QUESTION 7:Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Camera Angle & Tripod: We found out that using a tripod makes it less wobbly making it easier to focus onto what's happening. Camera angle was also better as for the full product we used several different angles .

Film Content: In both productions we had good props according to the mis en scene, but this time we used all the props as last time not all props were used which could have put a better effect.

Framing: this was also improved because we were able to make shots which were much more effective than the one’s in our preliminary task.

Mis es scene: For both production we had good locations but in the preliminary task we had some irrelevant items visible in the background which was quite distracting. However for the full product , we didn’t have any distractions as we made sure before filming that everything was at its right place.

Here in the final product the mis en scene is fine as there is nothing distracting or needles in the background.
