Peroni and Memory were designed half a
century ago. These two suspension lamps
were to become an icon of the Company in
the following decades, and are still today
some of our most popular products with
international customers. Back then, a
great, enlightened designer of the likes of
Ezio Rizzetto worked for the Company and
probably played a crucial role in their
development. The final outcome of the
project however was the result of a
collective effort, the fruit of a stimulating
environment where creative exchange
unleashed great insight, which is still very
much relevant today.
Mezzo secolo fa prendevano forma
Peroni e Memory, due lampade a
sospensione destinate a diventare nei
decenni successivi un’icona della nostra
azienda e che risultano a tutt’oggi fra i
prodotti più apprezzati dalla clientela
internazionale. La presenza a quei tempi
in azienda di un grande e illuminato
designer quale Ezio Rizzetto, rende
probabile un suo determinante
contributo: ma la paternità finale del
progetto è tuttavia attribuibile ad un
pensiero collettivo, in quel clima
stimolante di interscambio creativo da cui
sono scaturite innumerevoli intuizioni che
parlano ancora oggi un linguaggio attuale.

We believe that very few products in the
lighting industry have remained so popular
for such a long time as these two lamps.
We therefore decided to offer a “special
edition” to celebrate their fiftieth
anniversary. Both the “design” and the
“material” were reappraised in the search
for something that, while fully reflecting the
history of the two lamps, would highlight
their further potential and add value in
terms of craftsmanship and new appeal.
Crediamo che pochissimi oggetti di
illuminazione possano vantare una simile
longevità e abbiamo dunque deciso di
proporre le due lampade in una “special
edition” per celebrarne il mezzo secolo di vita.
Tale rivisitazione prende in esame sia il
“segno” che la “materia”, per offrire
qualcosa che pur rientrando pienamente
nella storia delle due lampade ne ponesse
in luce ulteriori potenzialità, un accresciuto
valore artigianale ed un nuovo appeal.

We have maintained the absolute purity of
the original design by re-proposing the
same shapes and introducing only a hint of
restyling elements as we are convinced
that in this case, where identity remains the
most important factor, this was the only
approach open to us. The new
interpretation therefore fully preserves the
soul of these two products and the spirit
with which they were designed fifty years
ago as shapes destined to maintain their
charm over the years.
Del “segno” originario abbiamo mantenuto
l’estrema purezza, riproponendone le
forme con l’introduzione di elementi di
restyling solo appena accennati, certi del
fatto che sia questo l’unico approccio
consentito laddove l’identità rappresenta il
fattore più importante. La nuova
interpretazione mantiene dunque intatta
l’anima di questi due oggetti, lo spirito con
cui cinquant’anni fa sono stati concepiti
come forme destinate a conservare il
proprio fascino nel tempo.

Revisiting the “material”, Murano blown
glass, in order to create something original
yet which is neither banal nor indeed
superfluous, proved to be more complex.
We have therefore used a traditional
process known as “rigadin” used by
master craftsmen on Murano. This enables
a crystal clear surface of variable thickness
to be produced which creates an optical
effect by constantly changing the way it
refracts the light, breaking up the
monotony of flat, even crystal and
enhancing its brilliance and transparency.
Più complesso è stato trattare la “materia”,
il vetro soffiato, esprimendo qualcosa di
inedito senza banalizzare o al contrario
creare inutili ridondanze. Abbiamo perciò
adottato la lavorazione tradizionalmente
detta “rigadin” dai Maestri muranesi, che
consente di ottenere una superficie
straordinariamente tersa ma nello stesso
tempo di spessore variabile, generando
quell’effetto ottico che rifrange la luce in
modo sempre diverso, rompendo la
monotonia del cristallo uniforme ed
esaltandone le caratteristiche di brillantezza
e trasparenza.

In the sixties the custom of naming
products had still not become very popular.
Products were simply identified by a code
made up of numbers, but then the
employees in the company tended to give
them pet names, almost as a sign of
affection. This is how Peroni came to get
its name, because its shape was
reminiscent (very vaguely, it must be said)
of a large pear. With its elongated shape
and smooth, well-balanced, sinuous
design, Peroni has been one of the
Companies most successful products and
is now a classic.
Negli anni Sessanta non era ancora diffusa
la consuetudine di assegnare un nome ai
prodotti. Essi venivano semplicemente
distinti da un codice numerico
identificativo, salvo poi battezzarli con un
nomignolo ad uso interno dagli addetti che
li identificava quasi con un moto di affetto.
È il caso di Peroni, nome che venne
attribuito in quanto la sua forma ricordava
(molto vagamente in verità) quella di una
grossa pera. Questo suo aspetto oblungo,
dalla sinuosità morbida ed equilibrata, ha
rappresentato uno dei maggiori successi
dell’azienda ed è ormai divenuto un
classico.

Design Lucio de Majo
Memory too was initially identified by just a
numerical code and was baptised during
the eighties, after enjoying over two
decades of success. The name came from
the fact that it represented the “historical
memory” of the design proposed by the
Company when it first started in this field.
The design brings a slight touch of irony to
the clear, formal balance, by introducing
slightly vintage decorative patterns into a
composition based on unquestionably
modern sensitivity.
Anche Memory era distinta ai suoi inizi solo
da un codice numerico e fu così battezzata
negli anni Ottanta, dopo oltre due decenni
di successi alle spalle, in quanto “memoria
storica” del design proposto dall’azienda al
tempo in cui essa stava muovendo i sui
primi passi in questo campo.
Un design che associa al limpido equilibrio
formale un leggero tocco di ironia,
nell’introduzione di motivi estetici
lievemente retrò all’interno di una
composizione improntata su una sensibilità
decisamente moderna.
