Several pre-anniversary events including the announcement of the logo contest winner, a gathering of leaders and a volunteer day led up to the official kick off for the 75th anniversary celebration in January 2014. The goal for the year is to highlight the milestones and achievements of the past 75 years, to showcase the innovative programs and initiatives underway on campus and to bring together the entire McNeese community, including alumni, community members, area businesses and industry, elected officials, students, administration, faculty and staff in a yearlong celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of McNeese State University.

On the cover are photos from all of the events that have been held during the first half of our celebration. Many activities and events are planned for the second half of the year and you are invited to come join us! Information on the remaining 75th anniversary events can be found on the website at 75th.mcneese.edu. Here are some special highlights:

The Celebration Continues

Donations to the McNeese Foundation provide worthy students access to a college education, support outstanding classroom teaching and faculty research and help McNeese meet unexpected needs and challenges. To honor the 75th anniversary, the McNeese Foundation initiated a capital campaign, 75 for 75 designed to provide a strong base to allow McNeese to develop innovative programs and plan for the future needs of students and faculty.

Unique giving opportunities available during the campaign include:

• McNeese Foundation membership for $75 (one year only) Benefits include fall and spring issues of PILLARS magazine, invitation

to the annual meeting as a voting member and Friends of the Visual Arts events.

• Donors with current scholarships may increase their scholarship by $7,500.

• “15 Will Get You 20” Matching Gift Program. A $15,000 donation will receive $5,000 in matching funds from the McNeese Foundation.

The campaign also includes constructing a new Health and Human Performance Educational Complex that will house the health, kinesiology and athletic training programs and hopefully a future occupational therapy program. It will also have a multipurpose arena facility that will be home for the McNeese volleyball and

basketball teams and suitable for Banners performances and other events.

All donations may be pledged over a five-year period. To learn more about these and other University priorities, call the McNeese Foundation at 337-475-5588 or visit the Foundation website at mcneesefoundation.org.

Numerous area businesses, corporations and individuals have invested in the 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign. The largest single gift to date, a $4.3 million gift from the H.C. Drew Estate Endowment, will support the construction of the new Health and Human Performance Educational Complex and support academic scholarships.

From its humble beginning to one of the best regional universities, the McNeese spirit of perseverance and optimism has transformed Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana and created generations of alumni leaders that reach all points of the globe.

The campus has grown and changed over the past 75 years, and the three original buildings are still in use. The new millennium began a period of unprecedented growth and expansion of McNeese facilities, infrastructure and land acquisitions. Since 2000 more than $117 million has been invested in construction, renovation and campus upgrades.

Funding for these projects came from several sources including the state capital outlay fund, local and federal grants, bond sales, FEMA, insurance settlements, students’ self-generated assessments and private donors.

• New buildings were constructed including Hardtner Hall, home to the College of Nursing

and the Department of Mass Communication, the SEED Center, Hodges Street Field House, the Robert Noland Alumni Pavilion and original dormitories were replaced with new suite-style residence halls and apartments.

• When the nearly 60,000 square foot addition to the Shearman Fine Arts Building opened, it was named the Best Higher Education Project for 2010 by South Central Construction Magazine.

• The Entrance Plaza, John McNeese Park, Student Union Computer Lab, new dining facilities and a student-parking garage were built.

• Renovations and additions to the recreation complex, sports medicine facility, Jack V. Doland Field House, Band Hall, Kaufman Hall and the Quad were completed.

More than 720 acres of farmland have been donated to the McNeese Foundation and the Foundation acquired property for use by

McNeese including the 16 acres used for the Center for Advancement of Meat Production and Processing (CAMPP) in Jefferson Davis Parish and five acres on Sale Road used for student parking.

The Foundation assisted McNeese in acquiring property for growth and expansion including the SEED Center property across from the main campus, the former Miller’s House of Sports building on Common Street and apartment property at the corner of Sale Road and Common Street.

Currently, more than $72 million in facility construction, renovation and improvement projects are in progress including a one-stop shop for admissions and recruiting and a new health and human performance facility that will include an arena for NCAA basketball and volleyball games. Renovations to the Frazar Memorial Library, the original section of the Shearman Fine Arts Center and Frasch Hall Annex are underway as well as campus-wide ADA projects and erosion control and enhancements to Contraband Bayou from Ryan Street to Common Street.

There are numerous architectural icons on the McNeese campus. Some represent the period in which the building was constructed, such as the geometrical forms and patterns found on Kaufman Hall and Bulber Auditorium, and others depict the purpose of the building, such as the sports figures at Memorial Gym and the scientific mosaic in floor of Frasch Hall.

You can find the fish sculpture outside the Shearman Fine Arts Building and the cowboy mosaic in the Old Ranch, the heart of the Student Union Complex. The memorial bench and marker are located in John McNeese Park. The plaque lists the names of the first graduating class after McNeese became a four-year institution.

Did you notice that the brick pattern on the exterior of Kaufman Hall is part of the design on the cover?
