Principal’sMessageColumbia Community,Welcome to the end of the 2014 – 2015 school year. Closing out the year there are many items that are important. To keep this simple and focused, I will bullet a list of important items to consider:
End of Year – Last Day of School – May 20th.• Procedures– o Locker clean out on Friday, May 15th• Nobackpacks, largepurses, plasticsacks, bindersetc.duringthe
last week of school • Pen,pencilandpaperonly• NoafterschoolactivitiesofanykindMay19th&20th• Yearbook–PassedouttoONLYthosewhopre-purchasedonMay
13th.• VolunteersPLEASE–OnMay20th,wearehavingactivitiesfor
6th, 7th and 8th graders who are eligible. Please come and help organize and support our community of kids that day.
Next Year –• OurPartnership–WehaveworkedcloselywiththeMetroCenter,
Dr.YemiStembridgeandPedroNoguerathisyeartodevelopourvision for Columbia’s future engagement of parents and students in the learning community. This partnership begins next year and I would like to share the first part of our story. We look forward to working closely with you to develop more of our story together next year.
Columbia Story – Chapter 1: Our Beliefs About Student LearningIt is our job to accelerate learning for every APS student every day!We believe that all students will learn and find academic achievement at higher levels. It is our commitment to create an environment in our classrooms and in our building resulting in high levels of performance and growth within our community of learners. We are confident that, with our support, students will master challenging academic material and become empowered learners. We are all accountable for our part in the success of every member of our learning community. We are
prepared, dedicated and determined to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, parents and our community to achieve a shared educational purpose that elevates ALL.Ourcommunityneedsustodoourjob!
Technology Focus School – Columbia has been selected to be a technology focus school starting next school year. We have always had a strong technology program, but this will grow with direct support, software and equipment provided to increase access and learning for students and adults. If you have a technology background and want to volunteer and support us in this work, please let us know!
Scheduling – Each year, we get questions regarding classesand when schedules are available. We will not be completing the scheduling process for next year until mid-July. We block these from view on parent portal until the schedules are com-plete. Please be patient, it takes time to build comprehensive schedule.
OpenEnrollment–Decisionsregardingopenenrollmentwillnot be made until early June. We had way more students move into the Columbia neighborhood this past year and have not been able to take open enrollment for the first time in over ten years. We will contact you if you are applying to come to Columbia from our surrounding schools.
5th Block final summer – This summer will be the last time we offer the 5th Block summer school. Parents of selected students have already been notified. Please help us make this a successful summer school experience.
Have a fabulous spring and summer vacation!
