Each Advent season, we prepare to welcome Jesus
into the inns and stables of our hearts. But Jesus’
coming wasn’t welcomed by everyone with choirs of
angels. For St. Joseph, the first coming of Jesus was a
bit more complicated. “When his mother Mary was
betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.”
For Joseph, opening his heart (and home) to Jesus
meant, at best, appearing to all the world like a man
who had impregnated his wife out of wedlock. At
worst, he appeared a cuckold, raising the child of an-
other man. God doesn’t always appear the way we
expect.
For some of us, the birth of Christ is a bit relationally
complicated. Perhaps over the past few months, a
loved one has died. This Christmas, you’re taking it
upon yourself to keep up the traditions and hold the
family together. Welcoming Jesus means welcoming
grief. Perhaps it’s a difficult relative (or two or three)
and it’s all you can do to bite your tongue and swal-
low your pride while they’re under your roof. Wel-
coming Jesus means welcoming strife, discord, and
tension.
Yet “do not be afraid,” the angel says. Do not be
afraid. Why? Because we celebrate the birth of
“Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” Before
Jesus’ earthly ministry would begin, Jesus would lose
his father, Joseph. God is with us in our grief. Wher-
ever Jesus went, he stirred up controversy and faced
down challenging personalities. God is with us in our
stress. The trick is, like Joseph, to allow supernatural
grace to prevail. Joseph was a good man, filled with
natural virtue in that he didn’t want to “expose
[Mary] to shame.” Yet he was prepared to “divorce
her quietly” all the same. Our natural abilities only
take us so far. Where is receiving Jesus complicated
this Christmas season? Are you relying on your own
strength to get you through, or are you truly ready to
accept the grace of Emmanuel, God with us?

to.
pecados.”
Iglesia.” (Papa Francisco).

Much Gratitude to our late night and early morning
adorers. Your dedication inspires us!
There is unique peace, a special solitude and quiet that comes
in the late night and early morning hours when a busy city
calms down and rests. Eucharistic adoration at this time is par-
ticularly fulfilling. We live in a noisy world of relentless back-
ground sounds that distract, confuse and muddle our focus. The
sacred silence of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel provides a
sanctuary from disruption. We long to experience the soft, in-
sistent voice of Christ calling us to be closer to Him. In the
third century, men and women journeyed into the deserts of
Palestine and Egypt to escape the distractions of their busy
world. These desert fathers and mothers, called ‘Abba’ and
‘Amma,’ sought a place stripped of urban life. They, too,
longed for a place where the voice of Christ is the most heara-
ble. Even though we live in the desert, our noisy world sur-
rounds us. Join your fellow parishioners in the peace of the
Perpetual Adoration Chapel. The chapel is a loving gift and
service to our OLPH parish. Whether you sign up for an hour
of adoration or just drop in when the Holy Spirit moves your
heart, you are welcome. Call the parish office for more infor-
mation or check out our website at

Christmas Eve Rosary for Life
December 24th—11:00am-12:30pm
As we celebrate the eve pf Christ’s birth, join Bishop
Olmsted in praying the rosary outside the Planned
Parenthood facility at 5571 W. Eugie in Glendale.
Please park along nearby streets and walk to the site;
do not park in local business or medical parking lots.
Bring water and shade.
For the sake of the mother, we pray she will choose
life. For the sake of the child, already alive, yet not
born, we pray the child’s life will be spared. As St.
Joseph and our Blessed Mother protected Jesus, we
pray that all mothers choose life and protect their
Children.

Mark the Date!
The weekend of December 28th/29th is the Feast of the Holy
Family. The Knights of Columbus, council 3855, will be
sponsoring a Consecration to the Holy Family at ALL Masses.
Families today face many struggles, both through cultural
pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany
family life. Despite these struggles-and partly as a result of
conquering them-families have great capacity for love and joy,
a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in
Christ.
To assist families in living out this joy of Christ, Supreme
Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has composed a prayer
through which families may come together to consecrate
themselves under the protection of the Holy Family.
We invite every family of our parish to engage in the Conse-
cration of the Holy Family.
How to prepare:
The word consecration literally means “association with the
sacred”, and as such it requires as much larger commitment
than simply reciting a prayer off of a card. To receive the full
benefit of intercession from the Holy Family, one must
cleanse the body, mind and soul.
The decision to consecrate your family needs to be intentional
and a process through which you completely surrender to God
through the Holy Family. You are accepting the truth that
salvation history was changed forever by a family, and that
through your domestic church, you are called to live their ex-
ample.
Four suggested steps before praying the
Consecration to the Holy Family:
1. Discuss the importance of this consecration as a family
and why you are doing it.
2. Each member of your family is strongly encouraged to
receive the Sacrament of reconciliation.
3. As a family, intentionally choose something to fast from.
The fast can be for at least a week. As our physical bod-
ies are drawn to things of the world, it is strongly encour-
aged that you fast from something that you would normal-
ly do or consume.
4. Prepare for the commitment you are making. Consecra-
tion
to the Holy Family is not a single event. You have chosen
a way of life for your family. You and your family are
consciously choosing to be a beacon of light of God’s
love

vidad.

On this final week of advent we relight the
two purple candles for hope and peace, the
pink candle for joy, and the third purple can-
dle for love.
We have finally arrived at what Christmas is
all about. It’s about God’s amazing love for
each one of us. Love, and love alone explains
why God brought his divine nature to earth
and united it perfectly with our human nature
in the body of the tiny baby Jesus.
We still need him today! There is no other
who can teach us how to love without bor-
ders, to give without demanding that others
earn our charity, to be peacemakers even in
the middle of war zones.
What act of pure love can you do for someone
who doesn’t expect it?
The hidden things we do to directly help
others are never wasted. Let’s love boldly and
God will do the rest.
Open your heart to someone as a way of
preparing room in your heart for Jesus this
Christmas.
