In the name of Allah, the all merciful, the very merciful.

The six fasts of Shawwal

Fasting six days in Shawwal after the obligatory Ramadhan fasts is Sunnah. It is recommended for Muslims to fast six days in Shawwal as there is a great reward and great vir-tue in this. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever fasts Ramadhan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he/she fasted for a lifetime.” (Mus-lim)Some Hadith scholars explain that fasting in the month of Ramadhan is equivalent to fasting for ten months and the six days fasting in Shawwal is equivalent to two months of fasting. So overall, if one was to carry out all these fasts, they will be rewarded as if they fasted for twelve months or one year! (Mirqaat)

So there is great reward for carrying out these six fasts of Shawwal. We should try to complete these fasts, we should be in a good position to do so after a full month of fasting. May Allah grant us all the ability. Ameen.

Here are a few guidelines regarding the six fasts of Shaw-wal:

• In order to receive the aforementioned virtues and rewards, these fasts must be carried out in the Islam-ic month of Shawwal. One can start after Eid day and can fast any six days until the month expires.• One does not need to carry out the six fasts con-secutively, i.e. one after the after. They can be carried out on different days during the month of Shawwal. • If one has missed any fasts of Ramadhan for what-ever reason, they should make these fasts up first and then fasts the six of Shawwal. However it is still permissi-ble to carry out the six fasts of Shawwal and then make up the Ramadhan fasts.• It is impermissible to combine an intention of making up (Qadha) of Ramadhan and doing the six fasts of Shawwal. These two fasts are separate, they can’t be combined together. • It is recommended to start these fasts as soon as possible because generally it is good to hasten towards good deeds.

Post Ramadhan Message

Alhamdulillah Allah granted us with the great month of Ramadhan. We have strived hard in this month to worship Allah, follow out his commands and stay away from those things which Allah has prohibited. It is now important to maintain this throughout the year. Remember, Allah is the lord of all the months and not only Ramadhan. Hence we

should worship Allah throughout the year, not only during one month. It is also important to bring about consistency and continuity in our good deeds. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“The best of deeds is that which is done consistently, even if it is little”. (Ibn Majah)

We learn a very important lesson in these beautiful words of our leader Muhammad (peace be upon him). Our actions will only truly benefit us if we carry them out on a regular basis. It should not be the case that we carry out so many good deeds on a certain day and then we deprive ourselves of good ac-tions for the reminder of the week. Let us try hard to make our good actions regular, even if it means they are less. Here are some good deeds (besides the obligatory acts) that we should be carrying out on a regular basis:

• Recitation of the Quran – This should be done daily. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Recite the Quran, be-cause sure it will come as an intercessor for its recitor on the day of judgement” (Muslim)• Fasting – This action is not only limited to the month of Ramadhan. We should also try to fast outside Ramadhan. Ai-sha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would fast on Mondays and Thursdays. (Tirmidhi)• Giving charity (Sadaqah) - Make it a habit to give something on a weekly basis. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Surely charity extinguishes Allah’s anger and pro-tects against an evil death”. (Tirmidhi)• Seeking sacred knowledge – Attend one of the many lessons / classes at the Masjid regularly. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The one who sets out on a path in pursuit if Islamic knowledge, Allah makes easy this person’s path to paradise”. (Muslim)

There are many other good deeds we can carry out. The list above is not exhaustive, but provides some guidance on the good deeds we need to do. May Allah grant us the ability to carry out good deeds with consistency. Ameen.

How to connect with the Qur’an?

1. Daily recitation of the Qur’an is very important. This must be regular and consistent. Recitation carries a great reward, attracts the angles and attracts Allah’s mercy and blessings into our homes.

2. Alongside our recitation, we should try to understand the Qur’an. This could involve reading an authentic trans-lation to understand the part we have just recited. Or this could be done vice versa, i.e. reading the translation first and then reciting. The Qur’an is a message for all of man-kind and it is a message to be understood. The Qur’an is a book for everyone, be it the layman or the scholar. The averageperson should read the Qur’an and benefit from the ba-sic messages of Tawhid (oneness of Allah), Rislah (messen-ger ship) of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Aakirah (the hereafter). There are also many great lessons to learn from the stories of the prophets (peace be upon them all). Obviously, some of the ambiguous meanings and deriving rulings from the Qur’an should be left to the scholars of the religion. One should make effort in understanding the message of Allah.

3. A great way to benefit from the Qur’an and in under-standing its deeper meanings is sitting in Qur’an / Tafseer lessons delivered by authentic and reliable scholars. Such scholars, by doing research, are able to dig beyond the basic meanings and are able to uncover some of the hid-den meanings and hidden gems of this magnificent book. Participating in such lessons will Insha’Allah give listeners a greater understanding of the Qur’an and scholars may be able to give examples of how to implement the Qur’an on a practical, day to day basis. In addition, such gatherings are extremely blessed since the peace and mercy of Allah shower down on such gatherings. The angels also encircle such Qur’an/ Tafseer lessons. We should make it part of our busy schedule to include participating in a Quran/Tafseer lesson once a week.

May Allah grant us all the ability to maintain a strong con-nection with the Qur’an and may he give us the ability to act upon the advices mentioned above. Ameen.

What is our relationship with the Qur’an?

The month of Ramadhan was the month of the Qur’an. We would have recited, listened and overall become closer with the Qur’an during the blessed month. Now that Ramadhan is over, does this mean our connec-tion with the Qur’an is also finished? Do we put away our Qur’an back on to the shelves allowing it to gather dust? Do we only take out the Qur’an on certain oc-casions and events? Of course this should not be the case. We have been warned against neglecting the Qur’an. Allah says in the Qur’an: “And the messenger will say: “O my lord! my people have abandoned this Qur’an”. (25:30)

Furthermore, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah elevates a people by this book and de-bases others by it”. (Muslim) We look around the world and we see the plight Mus-lims are in. One possible reason for this is Muslims ne-glecting the book of Allah.Shaykh al-Hind (Mawlana Mahmud al-Hasan) a great scholar from the Indian sub continent (1867-1920) mentioned that neglecting the Qur’an is one of the ma-jor reasons for the decline of the Muslim community.

Abandoning the Qur’an is of various types

The great scholar Imam Ibn Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) explains some ways in which the Quran is neglected:

Firstly, refusing to listen to the Quran, or listening to it without paying attention and without taking heed. Allah addresses this in the Quran when he says: “When the Qur’an is recited, listen to it and be silent, so that you may be blessed.” (7:204)

Secondly, ceasing to act upon the Qur’an and abiding by what it declares as lawful and unlawful, even if one was to recite it.Thirdly, refusing to ponder over the meaning of the Qur’an and not seeking to uncover the basic message of Allah’s book. Allah says: “Do they not, then, ponder about the Qur’an”? (4:82)

Fourthly, to abandon seeking a cure or healing through the Qur’an in respect to diseases of the hearts and its maladies, but rather seeking remedies from other sources. Allah says: “We reveal the Qur’an, which is cure and mercy for the believers”. (17:82)

These are some ways in which the Qur’an becomes ne-glected and abandoned. We need to strive to connect ourselves with the Qur’an.
