NIGHT SECTION (PODIUM)

MORPHOLOGY OF MASSES

EXTERIOR PRESPECTIVERIVER NILE VIEW

IN THIS PARTICULAR DESIGN THE EXTERIORFORM MORPHOLOGY WAS BASED UPON THEINTERACTION OF THREE STRONG CUBICALSOLID MASSES, RESULTING IN A FORMAL,ELEGANT COMPOSITION WITH ADISTINGUISHED MASS SUPERIOR IN HEIGHTAND TREATMENTS.

THE DESIGN ALSO INCLUDED A SPECIAL SKYCOURT FEATURE A 10 FLOOR VOID OVERLOOKING THE RIVER NILE, SEMI OPENSPACE BETWEEN THE 10TH & 21ST FLOOR,SKY GARDEN AND RESTAURANT & CAFEWITH PANORAMIC LIFTS AND FLOORSAROUND GIVING THE DESIGN A UNIQUETOUCH AND ICONIC EXTERIOR LOOK.

AS ALL OTHER THE TOP HOTELS, NIGHT LIFEIS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT TOCONSIDER IN THE DESIGN, IT SHOULD NOTONLY BE ATTRACTIVE TO THEGUESTS AND VIEWERS BUT IT SHOULDBECOME AN ICON TO LIGHT UP THENILE . SPECIAL LIGHTS IN THE CENTRALVOID, WILL CREATE A MAGNIFICENTSITE TO VIEWERS MILES AWAY.

TO ADD TO THE COMPOSITION IS ANELEMENT OF LANDSCAPE AND ART, ANEXTERIOR CASINO IS SCULPTURED INTOTHE FORM OF TWO DICE, NUMBERS 5 + 2 = 7TO INDICATE THE 7- STAR HOSPITALITYAVAILABLE IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

THE FIRST AND STRONGEST IMPRESSION ISGIVEN OFF BY THE LOBBY, THEREFORE I HAD TOENSURE ITS EXUBERANCE.

HAVING THE MAIN LOBBY ON THE FIRST FLOOR ANDUSING A DOUBLE HEIGHTGLAZED FACADE WITH AN UNDISTURBED TERRIFICNILE VIEW, AND A GENTLE RAMP TOWARDS THEFAMOUS INFINITY POOL, THE INFINITY WALK.

THE SECTION SHOWS THE VARIETY OF LIVE ZONES INTHE PROJECT AND THE STRONG IMPACT OFLEVELLING IN CREATING SEVERAL POINTS OFINTEREST AND A UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT.

THE BREAKFAST HALL LIKE ALL THE OTHER RESTAURANTS IN THIS PROJECT MUST HAVE SPECIAL DESIGN FEATURES AND UNIQUE VIEWS ON ASOARING ALTITUDE, THIS BREAKFAST DINING AREA IS CANTILEVERED TOWARDS THE NILE RIVER AND RISING ABOVE THE LANDSCAPE BELOW.USING DOUBLE HEIGHT GLASS FACADES AND VISIBLE STEEL STRUCTURAL MEMBERS AS A DESIGN FEATURE DEFINES ITS CHARACTER AS ITBECOMES A SPECIAL POINT WITH SPECTACULAR DAY AND NIGHT VIEWS.

THE SKETCH INTERIOR VIEW BELOW SHOWS THE INTERESTING ENVIRONMENT CREATED BY THE VOID. THE STEEL TRUSS PENETRATES THESPACE WITH UNIQUE SCULPTURING AND LIGHTING. IN ADDITION TO THE HANGING PLANTERS THIS SPACE NOW GIVES THE ILLUSION OF HANGINGGARDENS AND AN ARTISTIC TOUCH TO THE INTERIOR, GIVING IT THE 7- STAR EDGE REQUIRED.

NIGHT VIEW

PART SECTION

CONCEPTUAL INTERIOR SKETCH

THE BREAKFAST HALL IS DELIBERATELY PLACED ONTHE 8TH FLOOR, ON A SEPARATE CANTILEVEREDSTRUCTURE TO PROVIDE SPECTACULAR VIEWS, ANDSINCE IT IS USED MOSTLY BY GUESTS AND NOTVISITORS, ESPECIALLY IN THE MORNING HOURS, THECONCEPT WAS TO PLACE IT ON AN INTERMEDIATELEVEL BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT GUESTACCOMMODATIONS.

DURING THE NIGHT IT STILL OPERATES AS ARESTAURANT BUT AN EXCLUSIVE RESERVATION ONLYCUISINE TO AVOID LARGE INFLOW OF PEOPLE TO THEUPPER FLOORS SO AS NOT TO DISTURB THE GUESTS.

Page 6: Ahmed Abubakr PORTFOLIO

WHILE SKETCHING THE DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THIS PROJECTS A SECTIONAL 3-DIMENSIONAL APPROACH WAS TAKEN 3D CUTAWAYS NEEDED TO DETERMINE THE COMPLEX CIRCULATION AND FLOW OF GUESTS, VISITORS STAFF AND SERVICES.A SUCCESSFUL HOTEL DESIGN DEPENDS ON THE EFFICIENCY OF SERVICE DELIVERY AND GUEST SATISFACTION.

MANY THOUGHTS WERE PUT INTO CONSIDERATION TO PROVIDE UNIQUE ENVIRONMENTS WITH THE EDGE NEEDED TO MAKE THIS 5-STAR HOTEL SEEM "7-STAR" FOR INSTANCE THE "SKYCOURT" OR THE VOID WITHIN THE TOWER IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DESIGNFEATURES THAT MAKE THIS HOTEL STAND OUT AMONGST THE OTHERS, IT PROVIDES HUGE AESTHETICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES. FOCUSING ON DESIGNING A MIXTURE OF ENTERTAINING ENVIRONMENTS ON MANY LEVELS AND DIFFERENT VIEWS WAS ONE OF THEMAIN GOALS IN THIS PROJECT, MAKING THE GUEST HAS A VARIETY OF EXPERIENCES EACH REFLECTING THE BEST OF MODERN HOSPITALITY AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN.

MORE CONSIDERATIONS WERE PUT INTO THE EXTERIOR FORM TO ACHIEVE A MODERN YET PRESTIGIOUS OUTLOOK, USING RHYTHMIC AND MODULAR FLOOR PANELS AND MIXTURE BETWEEN MODERN GLASS AND NATURAL STONE FINISH.

CONCEPT BASED ON INTEGRATION WITH EXISITING URBAN CONTEXT

My concept is based on designing a unique Site Specific Tourist Complex very well integrated with its surroundings trying to revive the neighboring area as a whole. Designing a well integrated facility via a harmonic form typology that offers conventional construction and design techniques.

MY DESIGN APPROACH: I looked at the project from various planning levels mainly focusing on the site layout and arrangement of the project components at an urban design level. The project to me presents a challenge in creating an establishment of very unique character and specific to its site and surroundings. I attempted to produce an outcome that will melt into the site and surroundings and not look artificial or irrelevant to the area and try to revive as much of the neighbourhood activities to provide a social and economic bond between my project and its neighbours. In addition to me a Tourist complex represents an area of various day and night activities with many attraction points. It should have an innovative approach towards guest circulation minimizing vehicular circulation and providing a unique enjoyable experience on site and integrated with the attractions off site. The Main concern of my design was the guest experience regarding the design of the attractions, the views on site, the leveling and general outdoor built environment. The Accommodations served as a less important function to me since it is where the tourist will spend least of his time, nevertheless it will include all necessary services and means of comfort with a sustainable design approach of adequate spaces and character without being highlighted as the most important component in the project.

DESIGN APPROACH

Designing successful tourism accommodation establishments requires an understanding of four fundamental planning issues: 1.Site Analysis 2.Master Planning 3.Architecture 4.Detail Control Management

INNOVATIVE NEW CONCEPT: VERTICAL AXES

ADVANTAGES OF THE VERTICAL AXIS CONCEPT

•  Clear vision of 3 zones at all times, due to leveling.

•  Unique spaces built into the island topography due to landscape interaction with leveled zones.

•  No confusion on where the attractions are / no extensive need for signage.

•  Less wasted space on horizontal circulation routes and roads.

THREE zones integrated and ONLY separated by drastic leveling to create a more unique and stronger theme for each zone, each an island on its own without physical barriers to obstruct vision or large horizontal distances between the zones. This reduces confusion between zone, allows all round views and high integration between the zones.

THE FORTRESSDEFINING THE PROJECT:

The facility is to be a deluxe, midrise,Tourist complex containing residential, commercial & recreational facilities nearthe historical island of Suakin. The designshould accommodate internationaltourists, convention groups & localvacationers.

The fortress is the name i chose for thisproject, as it symbolises the culturalidentity of the area many years ago inaddition to its unique location and isolation. When entering via bridge you feel thestrength of the strong curvilinear walls andawait the mysteries behind. The form morphology inspired from thehistorical city, circular planing and largecentral live zone (positive space) is one ofthe main concepts of the fortress as mostactivities take place between the curvedwalls. This does not mean the seclusion ofisland parts outside the wall, but they arefunctionally active whether servicecirculation or sandy beaches for tourists toenjoy. Their is also an all round islandwater side walkway, that circulates themain zones.

The project is also designed to extendbeyond the island boundaries to connectwith the sea and surroundings givingguests a full recreational experience.

Use of the historical values and mythology of the old city to create a Replica at the heart of the cultural zone in my design; allowing tourists to relive thecultural experience of old Suakin. It includes the “Suk” and market square with live performances.Ancient Live City, featuring the main Cultural events in the centre is a traditionally designed market square with live acts and continuous retail alleys werelocal craftsmen can sell and interact with the guests.

The Eye Of Suakin is a central design feature, avertical slanting moving cable car via conveyorbelt systems, carefully built on to the tower shearwalls.

The panoramic car slowly levitates a completecycle with a looping pattern custom made for thedesign.

The complete cycle starts and ends from the cablecar platform on the fifth floor and rises to the topand then descends back to the starting pointslowly providing an aerial tour and a unique touristexperience.

An addition to the cultural alleyway a “staircaseto Suakin”, steps leading from the site overwater to the closest point to the island, a highpoint with installed binoculars, and observationdeck directly facing the historical city.

This cultural Monument contains afloating restaurant with an 18thcentury theme, including massivegateways and arches, all decoratedand ornamented to represent thepast civilisations.

This Live city design feature not onlyproduces a highlyeducational entertaining attraction forthe tourists but alsohelps the local craftsmen of the areaand caretakers to bondwith the guests creating jobs and sociallinks between theproject and the people.

The historical city of Suakin has inspiredmy design in many ways including:Climate:• Use of narrow curvilinear multileveledcirculation paths to increase wind speedsandinvite the cool sea breeze.• Use of screening concepts inspired fromthe“mashrabiya” to keep out the sun and allowairflow.Materials:• Use of natural stones and coral rags andstones,to give a harmonic texture to the design inrelevance to the surroundings.

A TOURISTIC RECREATIONALCOMPLEX MUST PROVIDEENTERTAINMENT AN ATTRACTIONSAT ALL TIMES OF DAY ESPECIALLYTHE NIGHT AFTER ALL OUTSIDETOURISTIC VENUES ARE CLOSED.

THE PROJECT WILL NOT ONLYCREATE AN ATTRACTIVE SIGHT TOSEE BUT WILL IMPROVE THESOCIAL NIGHTLIFE AND ENHANCELOCAL FLOW TO THE UNBUILT AREAANDHELP LIVEN UP THE QUIETNESS OFTHE NIGHT.

"FROM AN EMPTY ISLAND ANDDARKNESS OF THE SEA THEFORTRESS WILL BECOME THEPLACETO BE".

The architecture of a project is central to thedevelopment of an integrated tourism facilitycharacter.Site analysis will not prescribe an architecturalstyle but aspects of the analysis should cuevarious architectural decisions.Major architectural considerations include:ImageryThe imagery is the sort of architecturalcharacter adopted for a project. It is importantto emphasise that no single type of imagery isright for tourist development. Rather, it shouldevolve through masterplanning in response to the results andconclusions ofthe site analysis. Each site is uniqueand hence should produce its owncharacteristic imagery.MaterialsMaterial selection should be a choice resultingfrom imagery consideration, visual context, site, and a realistic maintenance plan.InteriorsConsistency of imagery from outside to insideis crucial.Major internal spaces are the heart and soul ofa complex, being the areas through which allpeoplemove. The treatment of such spaces shouldreflect a facility’s unique quality.
