TheCouncilhasmovedthePro-LifemonumentfromKenneyHighSchooltoStJoseph’sParish.TheCrossthataccompaniedthemonumenthasbeenstrippedandrepaintedbyBrotherDaveGockleyAParishioner,JimNazzoliworksforametalfabricationcompanythatmadeametalstandthatwasusedforinstallingtheCross.BrotherJimSchuesslerhasreviewedtheplansforinstallingtheCrosswithFr.Pastoriuswhoapprovedthem

BrotherKnightsandLadies,

Myson,whoisanofficerintheNavy,recentlydiscussedanarticlethattalkedaboutthepracticalattributesofagoodsoldier:honor,competence,andcommitment.ThatconversationmademethinkaboutwhatmakesagoodCatholicandagoodKnight:therearethreetheologicalorsupernaturalvirtues:faith,hope,andlove(1Cor13:13)andfournaturalorcardinalvirtues:wisdom,justice,courage,andtemperance.(Wisdom8:7)“Life,”wereadthere,“canofferusnothingmorevaluablethanthese.”Fromtheseprimordialvirtuesspringcorollaryvirtues,enablingustodiscernandtodothatwhichisgood,true,andpleasingtoGod.

TheseremindedmeofthefourpillarsofbeingaKnightofColumbus:charity,unity,fraternity,andPATRIOTISM.ThiscontemplationisbecauseIhavebeenthinkingalotaboutrecruitingBrotherKnightsandwhatmyresponsewouldbeifsomeoneaskedwhatbeinga4thDegreeSirKnightmeanstome.

Atitsbase,itisnotaboutrecognition,itisnotaboutthememorialprogramorbeingamemberofthehonorguardorcolorcorps(whichareamazingbytheway).Itismyconvictionthatmyownwelfareandthatofmyfamily,myChurch,andmyCountryaredependentuponthepreservationandexpansionofthecultureandinfluenceofthegroupsthatIampartof.IwouldgiveupallthatIhaveformyfamily,myChurch,andmyCountry.

Howdoesbecominga4thDegreeBrotherSirKnighthelpmetobeapatrioticAmerican?ItstartsbygivingmeanavenuetobeagoodexampleformyfamilyandthosethatIinteractwith.ItprovidesmetheopportunitytoservethosewhohaveandarecurrentlyservingthisgreatNationsothatIhavethefreedomtolive,practice,andevangelize(“promote”forthosewhodon’tliketheterm“evangelize”)Catholicism.Itofferscountlessopportunitiestogiveofmytime,talents,andtreasuresinpartnershipwiththeVeteransAdministration,theUSO,jointactivitieswiththeVFW,helpingtoestablishapostfortheCatholicWarVeterans(www.cwvusa.org)locally(moreonthisexcitingopportunitylater),toeducateinschools,andotheropportunitiesonlylimitedbyourmembersimaginationanddesiretoserve.Yougetsomuchmoreinreturnthanwhatyougive.
