40 Days for Life Charleston is preparing for our Spring Campaign by recruiting volunteers to pray peacefully for an end to abortion at our local Planned Parenthood facility. I’m writing to invite your Council to join us in this endeavor. There are several opportunities to become involved:

1. The first is to come pray for and learn more about the campaign at our Rosary and Kick-Off Rally on Saturday, February 15th (all details are in the attached flyer).

2. The second is to encourage your Knights to sign up for prayer shifts during the campaign. Hourly shifts are available from 6 AM to 10 PM seven days a week between February 26th and April 5th. We strive to fill each slot with at least two people, and we especially strive to have male coverage during the hours of darkness (first thing in the morning and the after-dinner hours). Interested folks can sign up at 40daysforlife.com/Charleston. (Note: Abortions take place Fridays and Saturdays and the clinic is closed on Sundays and Thursdays. I mention this so you

can plan accordingly – first-timers may feel uncomfortable being there on days abortions are performed, or others may want to especially be sure to sign up for the days the women and babies need the most prayers!) Participants may sign up for a weekly recurring shift or for an hour or two here and there as their schedules permit.

3. One final way to participate is reserve a day (or partial day) for your council and make a “field trip” out of a day to Charleston. To reserve a day for your council, please let me know the day you’d like to cover and we can coordinate further.

I realize that driving in Charleston traffic from Goose Creek to West Ashley to the Planned Parenthood facility is not convenient. It is sacrifices such as doing it anyway that can really serve to counteract abortion. (The best pro-life homily I ever heard stated that abortion is a sin of convenience, and that purposely inconveniencing ourselves is one of the best ways to combat it.)

Please share this email and attachment with your fellow Knights and also let me know if you’d like me to explain any of these options any further. I’d be glad to make a presentation to your Knights in a meeting, either virtually or in-person, or answer your questions by phone or email. We have been struggling to find enough volunteers to cover the shifts and we are stepping out in faith that God will send us more workers in the vineyard. Thank you in advance for answering the call.

Sincerely,

Anne Hobday

District Deputy’s Message

My Brother Knights! Congratulations are in order for our eight new Third-Degree Knights exemplified at the GK Mid-Year Workshop and Charity Ball on February 1st. Approximately 15 state Councils brought a total of 48 candidates before the new Charity, Unity and Fraternity Degree. Council 11471 Moncks Corner brought seven candidates, and one from Council 11991 Goose Creek. The candidates were exemplified by the South Carolina State Council officers and invested with the Rosary and lapel pin by two Supreme officers and several Past State Deputies. It was attended by an estimated 300+ Brother Knights, family, friends and other observers. Comments were generally very positive, but I will let your own GK give you his input. I personally thought it was very well done for a first time, but there were some parts that needed better organization. I will be discussing how the District will proceed with the GKs at our mid-year meeting to be held sometime this month. Congratulations are also in order to the lucky individual from Moncks Corner who won the Third-Place award of $2,000 at the Charity Ball. The Charity fund earned about $55,000 to be shared with many deserving state charities. As mentioned last month, this is a very busy time for submitting all our important reports, awards and nominations recognizing the good works your respective Councils have done this Fraternal Year sharing and promoting our Faith in Action programs. The Worthy GKs have appointed nominating Committees recommending those best qualified to lead your Councils into next Fraternal Year. Councils - Beat your drums loudly!! I thank all of the Grand Knights, Council officers and directors for your tireless leadership and to the membership committed to putting our Faith in Action. We have accomplished much, but the race is not over. This is the sprint to the finish line in a year of wonderful accomplishments. You have made a critical difference with your Church, Council, Community and the others that you serve. Oh, by the way, the Semi-Annual Audit is due to Supreme no later than 15 February. Thanks for all you have done, thanks for all you are doing, and thanks for all you will do. Keep Charging!! Remember our sword is prayer and the Rosary. Our shield, good works informed by our faith. Be men of faith!

Laus Deo! “…Thy will be done…”

Our Field Agent’s Message

Love is in the air! We spend a lot of time thinking about our loved ones during the month of February and especially around Valentine’s Day. Technically, it’s St. Valentine’s Day, originally the feast day of a Roman saint from the third century. There is much speculation about the origins of the feast and even some discussion about the identity of the saint. We do know that this St. Valentine was martyred on February 14, 269 and the feast day was instituted by Pope Gelasius I in 496. But how did St. Valentine, a martyr, come to be associated with love and romance? Again, there is much speculation and one popular story is that he cured the blind daughter of his jailer. Before he was led off to his death, he wrote her a note and signed it “Your Valentine.” Unlike St. Valentine, most of us are not called to martyrdom, but we do think about our loved ones…and we write love notes and greeting cards. Gifts are commonly given to the ones we love. But have you ever considered some special gifts for the ones you love? That’s really what insurance is all about. People buy insurance because they love someone. I bought life insurance because I love my wife and children. If I’m not here to provide for them I want to make sure they can stay in the same home we love; I want to make sure that my children will have the college education they will need; I want my family to continue to live the lifestyle I’ve been so fortunate to be able to provide. My policy even has living benefits that I can enjoy! I want to make sure that if I am sick or hurt and can’t work, my family still has money coming in to pay the bills. Disability Income Insurance helps provide for that. I’ve been able to provide a lifestyle for my family, but sometime down the road, I’ll take the assets I’ve accumulated and retire. Long Term Care Insurance helps me protect those assets in case I have an extended care event. I won’t have to spend down all that I’ve saved to pay for care…I’ve shifted that risk to the Knights. My retirement annuities will help my wife and me enjoy our golden years. With a lifetime minimum interest rate guarantee I know I’ll always be in the black with my account. All the products we have available are centered around protection; protection for me, for my family and for what I’ve been able save. Is your protection where you want it to be for your loved ones? At this Valentine’s Day, let’s sit down; you, me and your wife and see where you stand. Make sure you have insured your love. Go ahead and buy that greeting card, write her a love note…maybe even get a beautiful arrangement of flowers or a dozen roses. But remember, the gift of protection will be there when it’s needed most. Vivat Jesus!

Yours in Christ

“Unity amplifies Charity!” Supreme Knight Carl Anderson from his remarks at the 137th Supreme Convention

“How many times do we pray for people, when we are supposed to be the answer to that prayer? If

you say the simple prayer ‘Use me to serve You every day,’ God is going to use you today, tomorrow,

and the next day. He’s going to use you every day that you’re willing.” Connie McEldowney from her book “Restored: Stories of Encounter”

ADORATION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST: Every Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm the Most

Blessed Sacrament is present for public Adoration in the Immaculate Conception Church Adoration Chapel. As a

new year’s resolution, all are invited and encouraged to give Our Lord at least one hour each week. Come and give

our Lord an hour or two of dedicated quiet and prayerful time. Give him an opportunity to talk with you in a

peaceful environment. Overnight Adoration will only be offered at IC following the First Friday Mass and Devotions

from 6:30pm until 8:00am Saturday morning.

VETERAN’S VICTORY HOME, WALTERBORO: To honor our continuing patriotic commitment, we ask that

all continue to bring toiletry articles to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year. These items will be

collected and shared between the Walterboro Veteran’s Victory Home and the Felician Sisters in Kingstree. The

Veteran’s Victory Home also asks for craft items, books (prefer large print), periodicals and newspapers. Some of

these items are used in their therapy sessions. The adult coloring books with colored pencils are exceptionally

popular.

OUR LADY OF JOYFUL HOPE: The Felician Sisters in Kingstree continue to help those in desperate need with

the basics of food, clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing their pantry with food, toiletry and

hygiene items, and infant clothing. We have a substantial collection of hygiene and other items which are

languishing in my living room and we will soon be delivering them. We will continue to collect toiletry and hygiene

items to help with restocking. Therefore, at each meeting, social or gathering we will have a box available in which

to put any donated items. The Felician Sisters at the St. Anne Felician Center remain humbly thankful for our

donations and support.

PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY:

The Month of the Holy Family

In January, the Catholic Church celebrated the Month of the Holy Name of Jesus; and in February, we turn to the

entire Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In sending His Son to earth as a baby, born into a family, God

elevated the family beyond a mere natural institution. Our own family life reflects that lived by Christ, in obedience

to His mother and foster father. Both as children and as parents, we can take comfort in the fact that we have the

perfect model of the family before us in the Holy Family. It's a good practice to memorize short prayers to recite

throughout the day, to keep our thoughts focused on our life as Christians. This short invocation is appropriate at any

time, but especially at night, before we go to bed.

Invocation to the Holy Family

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph most kind, Bless us now and in death's agony. Amen” Cite from Richert, Scott P. Thoughtco.co. "Prayers for February”

Learn Religions, Jan. 29, 2020, learnreligions.com/prayers-for-february-542763.

PRAYER FOR OUR KNIGHTS: Pray for all those others sick and in distress, relatives, friends, widows and

associates, those that care for them and for all Knights.

“When we do all we can, then God will do what we cannot."

PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our citizens, for those misplaced due to the severe weather

our Country has been experiencing, and for an end to the continuing, seemingly escalating, senseless violence in our

community and throughout the country. Also, pray and for the safety of all members of Law Enforcement, Fire

Service and Emergency Services. Let us also pray that our national leadership will make decisions supporting

religious freedom and Right to Life with positive effects on our entire Country.

PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your prayers for SK James Baker, SK Kevin Seibert and SK

Zackary Schuman who are progressing in their calling to the Diaconate studies program, and for our Adorno and

Diocesan Seminarians and those other young men and women progressing in their religious discernment and studies.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military servicemen and women - those who are now

where many of us once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public safety.

“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and help

them live the Commandments. Lord Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with honor and

dignity. Be with them when they are in danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And

Lord, grant that, when their service is finished, they may return to us sound in mind, body and soul. In

particular, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow man and

Country. Amen.”

“It is a great time to be a Catholic and always a great time to be an active Knight.” We ask all Sir Knights to

keep actively recruiting our patriotic Knights.

GOD IS GREAT - ALL THE TIME! ALL THE TIME - GOD IS GREAT!

Vivat Jesus!
