Brothers – I finally have something to talk about that makes sense. March is going to be another

very busy month. OK! Tell me which month is not busy for the Council. Make sure you read the

Church Bulletin for all the good dates.

It is that time of the year that our three Trustees; Steve Gearhart, Lenny Tittle, and James Kelly

will be out “Beating the Bushes” for our next year’s slate of Council Officers. If you have any

interest in the Council’s future and Life – then think twice – three times before you say no to these

gentlemen. Our Future is in your hands. ( No – I didn’t steal that from Allstate ). Just remember,

you have elected Officer’s and appointed Director’s. If you believe in YOUR Council and really

District Deputy’s Message

Hi Brothers,

A little of what I have been up to…

I did something I said I wouldn’t do- I tossed my hat into the ring for the State Warden Position- I

lost. Went home looking forward to June 30th.

Last weekend I was informed that there is now a position vacant in the State Council. Monday I

tossed my hat into the ring.

Also on Monday I said goodbye to an old friend, Jerry Tenney. I met him when we first moved

into MENRIV (1974). He and his family welcomed my family. Less than 20 years later we would

become brother Knights. The friendship never ended.

I was also informed that due to members of the Knights of Columbus not willing to step up, the

Position of District Deputy has been changed (somewhat). When I started almost 5 years ago a DD

could be in position for four 4 years plus an additional 1 year granted by Supreme.

I was informed that Supreme has extended this amount of years to 8 years (by the way I informed

the State Deputy that If I took it for a 6th year I would be divorced).

And so I continue to look forward to the 30th of June.

Vivat Jesus!

Our Field Agent’s Message

I recently had the privilege of taking care of a council widow after the unfortunate passing of her husband and our

Brother Knight when she asked me a very painful question that dug deep into my heart. "Once this paperwork

(Death Claim) is completed does this mean I am doing with the Knights or no longer associated with ya'll", she

asked?

After the wrenching of my heart ended. I informed her no ma'am if anything you're going to be even more

involved with the Knights than you ever were before. Just because our Brother and your husband is no longer with

us, doesn't mean you're no longer invited to the socials and the events we are involved with. In fact we encourage

you to stay involved with us because you're still part of this family and are just as important of a team member as

your husband was. At these comments, she perked up and felt great with the biggest smile on her face.

Another privilege I get to receive is sitting down with Brother Knights who are no longer after. In fact I try at least

once per week that one of my 13 appointments is with a Brother Knight who is no longer insurable, either because

of age or health reasons. This removes all business dealings from the meeting, and it’s simply two Brothers

coming together to talk about life, the Faith and the Knights of Columbus.

I hear such amazing stories from our Brothers and before I leave they make it seem as if they received so much

from my visit, but in truth what I receive from them is beyond compare. The point I am getting at here is that we

need to make sure we don't forget about our widows, and that we don't forget about our Brothers.

If you haven't seen a widow or a Brother at an event or in church in a while, stop in and say hello to them or give

them a call. It means the absolute world for them to know that they aren't forgotten and that they still matter. In

some cases you may have the opportunity of being the last form of Jesus they will experience here on earth before

they reach the ultimate goal of spending eternity with him in the Kingdom of Heaven.

I've had several Brother Knights who literally have passed away anywhere from two months to two weeks after

sitting down with me and I’ll be honest it bothered me for a while their until Karen Boni, wife of our General

Agent Robert Boni spoke those words about being the last Jesus to me and it made absolute perfect sense.

We are called as members of the Knights of Columbus to always take care of our widows and orphans, but in this

Brotherhood we are called to take care of one another too. I encourage you all today to reach out to our widows

and reach out to our Brothers.

You never know when you may have the opportunity of being the last Jesus they ever see on earth.

Yours in Christ

Knights of Columbus, Patriotic Degree

Saint Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697

March 2019

For it does not matter what we claim to be, it matters what we are

and what “we” claim to be The Knights of Columbus is often referred to as “The strong right arm of the church”. And to

many, the Fourth Degree, is the most visible arm of the Knights of Columbus. The Patriotic

Degree is the ultimate completion of the journey into the Knights. A journey that upon

completion, awards you the honors of full Knighthood and the respect of being addressed as “Sir

Knight.” It is not a right but rather a privilege

To our new Brothers joining the Order. I personally welcome you to the largest Catholic Men’s

Organization in the world and strongly encourage you to first get involved in the Council. Attend

meetings! Find a Service Program that really reaches out to you and get volunteer you help.

Attend socials! With your wife and children, become acquainted with your Brothers. Advance!

Make certain when a 2nd Degree Exemplification is scheduled, you are there and so the same

advice goes for the 3rd Degree. Next you challenge yourself with a leadership role. If you remain

in the rear of the pack the view is always the same. God gave you a talent. Use it.

Finally, become a Sir Knight. Join the Honor Guard and just feel the energy in the Church and out

in the Community as you parade in the regalia. You will hear in the background. Who are they”

We are the Knights of Columbus of the Fourth Degree.

Interested? Talk to any Sir Knight about their experiences and what it feels like to wear the

emblem of our Order and be addressed as “Sir Knight”. The requirements are that you need to be a

Third Degree member in “Good Standing”. The next Fourth Degree Exemplification will be held

in Ft Mill, SC on March 30th at the St Philip Neri Catholic Church.

Vivat Jesus!

2019 PRAYER INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS: MARCH 2019

Evangelization – Christian Communities: “That Christian communities, especially those who are persecuted, feel that they

are close to Christ and have their rights respected.”

“Let us go into this Lent with a sense of enthusiasm, a deep consciousness of sin,

an awareness that we are penitents in need of redemption, and a knowledge that…

we are ailing people whom the Physician is coming to heal. —Mother Mary Francis P.C.C.

from “A Time of Renewal: Daily Reflections for the Lenten Season”

ADORATION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST: Every Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm; every Friday following

the 6:30pm Holy Mass until 8am Saturday; and every First Friday following the 6:30pm Mass the Most Blessed Sacrament is

present for public Adoration in the Immaculate Conception Church Adoration Chapel. All are invited and encouraged to give

Our Lord at least one hour each week. Come and give our Lord an hour or two of dedicated quiet and prayerful time. Give

him an opportunity to talk with you in a peaceful environment.

VETERAN’S VICTORY HOME, WALTERBORO: To honor our continuing patriotic commitment, we ask that all

continue to bring toiletry articles to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year. These items will be collected and

shared between the Walterboro Veteran’s Victory Home and the Felician Sisters in Kingstree. The Veteran’s Victory Home

also asks for craft items, books (prefer large print), periodicals and newspapers. Some of these items are used in their therapy

sessions. The adult coloring books with colored pencils are exceptionally popular.

OUR LADY OF JOYFUL HOPE: The Felician Sisters in Kingstree continue to help those in desperate need with the

basics of food, clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing their pantry with food, toiletry and hygiene

items. We will continue to collect toiletry and hygiene items to help with restocking. Therefore, at each meeting, social or

gathering we will have a box available in which to put any donated items. The Felician Sisters at the St. Anne Felician

Center remain humbly thankful for our donations and support.

Respect Life!

As of March 1, over 11,686 babies have been saved!

Every 30 seconds, a baby’s life is taken by abortion.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel for the End of the Culture of Death:

“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the

devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God,

cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”

Page - 10

“Indeed, the pro-abortion culture is especially strong precisely where the Church's teaching on contraception is

rejected…[Contraception] and abortion are often closely connected, as fruits of the same tree… To claim the

right to abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia, and to recognize that right in law, means to attribute to human

freedom a perverse and evil significance: that of an absolute power over others and against others.” - Pope

John Paul II from “Evangelium Vitae”

HUMAN COALITION: We will not waver! We have a vivid hope that abortion will become unthinkable and unavailable in our lifetime.

Over the last few months, the abortion industry has rapidly advanced its agenda in various states and at the federal level. Not

only that, but they’ve become increasingly transparent about their agenda, from New York’s RHA law to Virginia’s governor

publicly supporting infanticide. And now the U.S. Senate has failed to protect newborn babies. Recent changes in the

Supreme Court have most certainly caused the abortion industry to increase its agenda very quickly. In light of these

atrocious and gruesome decisions to continue ending the lives of preborn and now born children, you may be asking

yourself, What more can I do help build a culture of LIFE?

When we see news stories about politicians openly advocating for infanticide, aborted babies’ body parts being sold as a

commodity, and various states pushing for late-term abortions, many of us are compelled to do more than donate to a pro-life

organization or pray.

Pro-Life Principles As Christians, we have a set of “pro-life first principles,” or basic underlying truths about abortion and our faith. They are:

1. Preborn humans have the same extraordinary, intrinsic value as born humans.

2. The Church bears the responsibility of ending the injustice of abortion.

3. The Church, therefore, must end the genocide of preborn children with the same passion and urgency that we would end

the genocide of any other people group.

The Deadliest Injustice Abortion is the deadliest injustice in American history, killing 3,000 preborn children daily. Abortion, the willful slaughter

of preborn human beings, is the leading cause of death in America. But a cursory review of the Church’s involvement in

trying to end the abortion genocide over the past 46 years reveals that many Christians do not appear to align with these pro-

life first principles, though many of us say we do. One simple, self-reflective question drives home this conclusion: If 3,000

kindergarteners were being killed on playgrounds across America every day, how would we react? Our government,

our churches, our communities, and our families would all react very, very differently to the slaughter of schoolchildren than

we do to the slaughter of preborn children. But the reality is our faith demands that we value the preborn and the born the

same – and this equality demands that we align our behaviors with our beliefs.

We will not pause, we will not rest, we will not quit, we will not turn right or left, we will not be distracted, we will not

be defeated until abortion becomes unthinkable and unavailable in America. Cited from a blog post titled “What Can Be Done?” by Brian Fisher dated (est.) February/March 2019

With unwavering hope, FOR LIFE! We continue to affirm that abortion will not be ended in the Courts – It will be ended in

our Culture!

NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE - Quick Facts

When Does Life Begin? The life of a baby begins long before he or she is born. A new individual human being begins at

fertilization, when the sperm and ovum meet to form a single cell. If the baby's life is not interrupted, he or she will someday

become an adult man or woman. Worldwide, millions of unborn babies are killed each year. In the United States over 40

million unborn babies have been killed in the 40 years since abortion was legalized and more than 1.2 million are killed each

year. The question of when life begins is not an issue of theology or philosophy; it can easily be answered by elementary

biology. For more than 100 years, medical science has known conclusively that every individual's life begins at the moment

of fertilization.

Science is proving this truth: From the moment of conception, every human embryo embarks on an incredible nine-month

journey of development. Now, cutting-edge technology makes it possible for National Geographic's In the Womb to open

a window into the hidden world of the fetus and explore each trimester in amazing new detail. Revolutionary imagery

sheds light on the delicate, dark world of a fetus as never before.

We will continue to do battle on behalf of the unborn at every turn.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE:

40 Days for Life started on Ash Wednesday in 377 cities around the globe...and today we are in uncharted waters as

politicians calmly and coldly advocate for infanticide. It's unprecedented!

This is NOT the campaign to sit on the sidelines. This radical onslaught against born and unborn children is a clear sign

that Planned Parenthood and its allies are desperate. But it's also a reminder that our work is not done yet. To watch the

video, click the image or visit: https://youtu.be/gIF7ruNEJz8. You CAN make a difference. Former abortion workers report

that when someone prays in front of an abortion facility, the "no-show" rate for abortion appointments can go to as

high as 75 percent! Be that someone. Sign up TODAY to pray at the 40 Days for Life vigil closest to you.

PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH:

The Month of Saint Joseph, Foster Father of Jesus Christ

In the United States, the month of March is most often associated with St. Patrick, tons of corned beef and cabbage, and

many gallons of Irish stout are consumed on March 17 in his honor. However, throughout most of the rest of the Catholic

world (with the exception of Ireland), the month of March is associated with St. Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and

the foster father of Jesus Christ. St. Joseph's feast day falls two days later on March 19. As the foster father of Jesus Christ,

St. Joseph is the patron saint of all fathers. This prayer, is well suited for fathers to ask for the grace and strength necessary

to rear your children well.

Throughout the Gospels, the first four books of the Bible's New Testament, St. Joseph remains silent, but his actions speak

louder than words. He lives his life in service to Christ and Mary, in perfect conformity to the will of God. "The Prayer for

Conformity to the Will of God" asks St. Joseph to pray for us so that we may live the life that God wills us to live.

The Prayer for Conformity to the Will of God

“Great St. Joseph, to whose will the Savior subjected himself, obtain for me the grace to subject myself in all

things to the will of God. Through the merits you obtained when in the darkness of night, you obeyed the

angel's commands, ask for me this grace, that nothing may detain me from fulfilling the will of God with perfect

conformity. In the stable of Bethlehem, on the flight to Egypt, you recommended yourself and those dear to you

to divine providence. Ask for me this same grace to conform myself to the will of God in discouragement and

despondency, in health and sickness, in happiness and misfortune, in success and failure so that nothing may

disturb the tranquility of my soul in obediently following the way of God for me. Amen.” ThoughtCo. "Catholic Prayers for the Month of March."

ThoughtCo, Nov. 15, 2018, thoughtco.com/prayers-for-march-542767.

PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our citizens, for those misplaced due to the severe weather our

Country has been experiencing, and for an end to the continuing, seemingly escalating, senseless violence in our community

and throughout the country. Also, pray and for the safety of all members of Law Enforcement, Fire Service and Emergency

Page - 13

Services. Let us also pray that our national leadership will make decisions supporting religious freedom and Right to Life

with positive effects on our entire Country.

PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your continued prayers for SK James Baker as he continues his studies in

the Diaconate program, and for our Adorno and Diocesan Seminarians and those other young men and women progressing in

their religious discernment and studies.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military servicemen and women - those who are now where many

of us once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public safety.

“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and help them live

the Commandments. Lord Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with honor and dignity. Be with

them when they are in danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And Lord, grant that, when their

service is finished, they may return to us sound in mind, body and soul. In particular, we remember those who

made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow man and Country. Amen.”

February 17 Service Sunday/Assembly 3697 Hosting

From the earliest days of the Order, members wanted to create a form of hierarchy and recognition for senior

members. This issue was discussed at the National Meeting of 1899. As early as 1886, Supreme Knight James T.

Mullen had proposed a patriotic degree with its own symbolic dress.

About 1,400 members attended the first exemplification of the Fourth Degree at the Lenox Lyceum in New York

on February 22, 1900. The event was infused with Catholic and patriotic symbols, imagery that "celebrated

American Catholic heritage.” The two knights leading the ceremony, for example, were the Expositor of the

Constitution and the Defender of the Faith. The ritual soon spread to other cities. The new Fourth Degree members

returned to their councils, forming assemblies composed of members from several councils. Those assemblies

chose the new members.

On Service Sunday in February, Assembly 3697 and their Honor Guard celebrated the Patriotic Degree at the 9:30

Mass.
