Grand Knight’s Message

Brothers,

The new fraternal year is upon us as we start with an Admissions Degree and Business Meeting on

Thursday July 6th, starting at 6:00 PM. I look forward to meeting our newest members as they progress into our

Brotherhood by completing the Admissions Degree. And, as usual, I look forward to seeing you all again at our

meeting and socializing after the meeting have ended.

Our Council has filled out the ranks of Officers and some Directors and Chair positions have been filled

but we still have many open positions. I urge all of you to consider taking on the task of filling these open

positions and working on behalf of our Council. We will have a list of all these open positions available to

review at our meeting on July 6th.

While you may be new to such tasks as are required for the Director or Chairmen jobs, rest assured that

you will have great counsel and advice from those who have performed so admirably in the past. Although my

role as Grand Knight is still in its fledgling stage, I also have benefited from background assistance and advice

from some of our Past Grand Knights. This “fraternity” and willingness to help is a hallmark of our

Brotherhood as members of the Knights of Columbus. Our motto of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism

stands out so frequently as Brother Knights reach out a hand to help and give advice to their Brother Knights as

they share what they have learned from filling those positions before us. So you will not be taking a risk as you

stand to assume a new role in your Council. Your Brother Knights will stand in support and will have your

back.

Know also that the leadership skills and the knowledge, skills and ability that you learn and acquire will

stay with you not just for work in our Council, but in your professional career as well. Being a member of the

Knights of Columbus and working in a leadership position is not just a line on your resume, but a clear

indication that you are ready for additional responsibilities as you climb the ladder in your career. You will

notice the change in your ability, and others will notice that as well.

So I urge you to take on one of the open Director or Chairman positions and help your Council grow and

succeed. Take pride in what you do, and how you can contribute.

Vivat Jesus!

Prayer for Our Country’s Military

“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and help them

live the Commandments. Lord, Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with honor and dignity. Be

with them when they are in danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And Lord, grant that,

when their service is finished, they may return to us sound in mind, body and soul. In particular, we

remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow man and Country. Amen.”

Admission Degree Team

Please consider becoming an active member of the Admission Degree team and be the first to welcome

new members into our Fraternal Order. All positions require a backup and currently our Council needs

additional team members. The positions of the Admission Degree Team are as follows:

Grand Knight - Lengthy vocal position. Opens the degree from the podium.

Warden - Minimal vocal lines. Leads the candidates to the Council Chamber and presents them to the

Chancellor.

Inside Guard - Starts the proceedings.

Chancellor - The degree is centered about this position.

Deputy Grand Knight - Mainly in the middle of the degree.

Aids/ Guards - Escorts the inductees in. No vocals involved. These positions are very rewarding in spirit

and fellowship.

Sound Man – Minimal parts.

What are the requirements to be an Admission Degree Team member? Be a Third Degree Knight. All positions

have a written script to follow. Please consider volunteering to participate in this vital function for OUR

Council 11991. Contact Chancellor Frank Strunk, Council Ceremonials Director

District Deputy’s Message

Let’s see now I got your council’s installation done; (check), and I just returned from being installed

myself (24 June 17) in Blythewood; (check). So that means it is now time to start off the new fraternal year! I

would like to think that ALL of South Carolina will be watching our smoke as we set out to do best as always!

I hope that we start out running and begin our year with an Admission Degree (1st) to set the tone. I have

high hopes in your council – and I expect to see a STAR Council this time. Over and over I go to the State

convention and we smoke the other districts with our awards, but not the STAR. So I am very optimistic that

there will be a wind change this year, and it’ll happen. But this means that we need all of our members (not just

a small group of men) helping with the recruitment efforts, and like everything else we do as Knights it is not a

“me” event - it is a “WE” event.

To help us achieve the STAR we will be getting a new Field Agent very soon – Mr. Brandon Chambers.

Most of us know him as the District Deputy prior to me, and believe me he is eager to start (and talking with

Robert Boni he has already completed a policy and he isn’t even certified to sell insurance yet!). I expect that

you will all have the chance to meet and greet with him soon because as he sure wants to see you all.

July is always the 1st chance that the new Grand Knight gets to meet the other new GK’s at the Grand

Knight’s Workshop on the 22nd of July. I feel that this is an excellent training opportunity for the Deputy Grand

Knight and any other members that desire to become a GK in the future (no matter what their positions in the

council may be). So consider this as your invitation – talk with your Grand Knight and make arrangements to

carpool (the meeting after the meeting (going home in the car) is GREAT always).

As always I plan to be at your meetings. If ever you need to contact me email is my best tool –

[email protected] – but since I work if you call me please leave me a voice mail message and I will call

you back (843-830-5939). Since I know that my right side (thumb and elbow) is going to be operated on soon

so I may not be as perky as I want to be, but I really do enjoy seeing and talking with you all.

Pray for us all Brothers.

Vivat Jesus!

Our Knights in Action

Highway Clean Up

On June 17, our Council members gathered at the Community Center for our quarterly Highway Clean

Up work party. Our Council is assigned a two mile stretch of St. James Avenue for a mile east and west of our

church. Following the work detail, we gathered in the Community Center for breakfast and fellowship. Special

thanks go to our cooks Grand Knight Jim Kelly and Frank Strunk & crew.

Highway Clean Up Schedule

September 9, 2017 & December 9, 2017

Pack the Van Event! All Masses July 15 & 16

Our Council will be holding our quarterly Food for Families Food Drive prior to all Masses on this

weekend. All food and monetary donations will go to serve the needy of our parish and our

community. Our Partner in Charity - Helping Hands of Goose Creek is especially in need of canned

fruit, meats and sides as well as general toiletries. Please be generous.

Remember that our Council receives a rebate of $100.00 for each 1,000 pounds of food donated. Last

fraternal year the Council received a rebate of $3000.00 which will be put to use in our other

charitable actions!

who are humble, then your light will rise in the dark, and your darkness will become

Council Knights Welcome A New Immaculate Conception Parishioner

In June, Council 11991 Knights welcomed a new parishioner to Immaculate Conception Church. Knight

Larry Latta realized he had a new neighbor and through conversations with MaryAnn Caffery discovered she

was a recent arrival from Houston, Texas. Mary had purchased a home a few doors down from Larry and he

discovered she was in need of some assistance to move her household goods from storage into her new home.

Larry got in touch with Council Officers and in our usual expediency, the Council formed a work party

to get the job done on Wednesday June 28th. They met MaryAnn at her storage facility and over the course of

the next six hours, loaded a twenty-six foot Uhaul truck and transported the first load. The move was completed

on the next morning with the final load.

The Knights welcomed MaryAnn to the parish and invited her to attend our next Social on Thursday

July 21 to meet the rest of the Council members and their families.

Special thanks to parishioner Jeff Synder who joined in the effort. Jeff is not a Knight but through our

actions may soon be one.

Walmart II Tootsie Roll Drive

On June 30 – July 2, Knights of our Council conducted their second Tootsie Roll Drive at the Super

Center Walmart in Goose Creek. The drive started out shaky due to inclement weather, but we persisted and

over a hot Saturday & Sunday managed a great drive. Thanks go out to the Walmart management for hosting

the drive and many thanks to the generosity of our community members who donated to support our anchor

charities of Special Olympics and Berkeley Citizens.

Ongoing Events

These three Ongoing Events are chaired by our very own SK John Flinn:

EYEGLASSES FOR THE NEEDY – Our Council’s partnership continues with the Lion’s Club in collecting old or

disused eyeglasses and cases in usable condition. At last report, the Council collected 129 eyeglasses and 84 cases. If you

have some available for donation, please bring them to church with you and deposit them in the receptacle in the

Vestibule.

STAMPS FOR SISTERS OF THE HOLY CROSS – This is another Ongoing Program with the Council. The stamps

we collect and donate are sent to The Sisters of the Holy Cross in Notre Dame, Indiana. They have in their quarterly

publication gratefully acknowledged the donations we have made to their Ministry with the Poor. Please continue to

support this ministry and encourage others to help us. Place used postage stamps in the receptacle in the vestibule of our

church.

TABS FOR THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE – At last report, we are currently working on the 177th gallon of

tabs. All those individuals that participate in this ministry clearly demonstrate their compassion for others. My brother

Knights that provide tabs are some of the greatest people I know. Please communicate to those people who provide you

with tabs our appreciation. Bring your pull tabs with you to any of our meetings or socials and give them to SK John

Flinn.

Blood Drive

Our longstanding partnership with the American Red

Cross continues! Contact Joe O’Saben to volunteer for

either the sign up day or the day of the Blood Drive.

Knights of Columbus St. Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697, Goose Creek, SC

Excerpts from the July 2017 The Knight Courier

Faithful Navigator’s Message

A Man’s Country is Not a Certain Area of land, of Mountains, Rivers, and Woods, but it is a Principle. Patriotism is Loyalty to that Principle.

The Patriotic Degree is the ultimate completion of the journey into the Knights of

Columbus. A journey that upon completion, awards you the honors of full Knighthood into our

Order and the respect of being addressed as Sir Knight.

Religiously devoted and patriotically proud, the Fourth Degree members always stand

firm is support of the order while proudly serving the Country. They show unwavering support

of the faith while honoring the legacy of Knighthood.

History was achieved at Immaculate Conception on Monday, June 12, 2017 when the

Charter Officers of the St Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697 for the 2017-2018 Fraternal Year

were installed by the District Master Sir Knight Thomas Monahon PSD. Names that will be

forever archived in the record books of the State of South Carolina Knights of Columbus. A

truly solemn and moving occasion to witness when the charges of each position were read to

each Officer.

An idea that surfaced in November 2016 to establish a new Assembly finally became a

reality on that Monday evening. In the preceding 6 months prior to the installation, Assembly

3697 has already become more and more recognized throughout the State of South Carolina due

to the numerous activities of the Honor and Color Guard. The District Master was very

impressed by the members support and the hospitality that was exemplified during his stay. He

was overwhelmed by the ethnic diversity of our membership which only reflects back on the

participating Councils that make up our membership. Brothers Knights, together there is no

mountain we cannot conquer. I wish all of the Councils and especially the members of the St

Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697 a very prosperous and rewarding fraternal year.

Interested in joining our Order? Talk to a Sir Knight of his personal experiences of

belonging to an Order unlike any other. The requirements are that you need to be a Third

Degree Knight “In Good Standing”.

Vivat Jesus!

More Assembly 3697 news…

“As the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus, we are committed to the preservation of our

Church, our Order and to the many nations where Knights serve. We serve as examples of

Christ’s presence in the world.”

Members of the Patriotic Degree are an integral part of our Order and serve our

Brother Knights by:

Conducting various educational program

Honoring Knights and their families during times of tragedy and loss

Encouraging active participation in important programs of our Order

The Catholic Church dedicates the month of July to the Precious Blood of Jesus, which was "shed for the many,

for the remission of sins" (Mt 26:28). The Feast of the Precious Blood, established by Pope Pius IX in 1849, is

celebrated each year on the first Sunday of July. Like the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the subject of Catholic

devotion in June, the Precious Blood has long been venerated for its role in our redemption. This is truly an

awesome thought: Our physical nature is united to God through the Person of Jesus Christ. When we venerate

Christ's Precious Blood or His Sacred Heart, we aren't making an idol out of Creation; we are worshiping the

One True God Who so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son to save us from everlasting death.

The Sword & The Shield

If you are interest in completing your Knights of Columbus journey by being

exemplified in the Patriotic Degree, contact Sir Knight Steve Gearhart or Sir

Knight Mike Cousino of our St. Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697. The 75th

Patriotic Degree Exemplification will be held on September 30, 2017:

St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Boulevard

Charleston, South Carolina.
