Wrapup of 2021 Virtual Winter Conference By Cabinet Secretary Carol Byers

T he first Virtual Winter Conference was held on Saturday, February 20, from 10:00am-1:00pm. We canvassed clubs the third week

in January to determine interest in hosting a totally virtual conference and decided by end of January that we should go forward. There were 184 responses to the canvass and request for registra-tion. Of those, 153 completed registrations for the Conference. According to the Participants list on the Zoom, there were 138 at one time, but as I checked the participants list, I could see new Zoomers and others who had dropped off. I did not double count those who had a computer name and a telephone, like Tejas Patel and our District Governor. If husband and wife sent me registration forms, and I saw one of their names, I counted them as two. In addition, there were 7 who had not registered, 3 unidentified phone numbers, and 24 others with just first names who were on the call. If there was no last name, they were only counted once. So, as near as I can tell, there were 168 participants on the Zoom call! There were 55 clubs who participated, which is more than half our 94 clubs in the District. I would like to thank everyone who participated, making this a very successful virtual conference! Kudos also to our wonderful presenters starting with Leo Shakira Mangrio with Montclair Leos; Lion Sally Cooney Anderson presenting on Building a Club Website Using e-Clubhouse; Lion Tejas Patel on Lions Education and Training Opportunities; Kari Norris, Emergency Services Coordinator, RACSB on Maintaining Mental Health During Covid; Lion Greg Cole, 1VDG District 24-I, on Leadership Succession Planning; Lion Jim Purton on Lions Project Canine Companions for Independence; and Lion Jim Cech on Mentoring and Membership Retention. Well done! Monitoring the Chat during the Conference, every presentation was very well received. Here are just a few of the 15 pages of comments: Leo Shakira Mangrio with Montclair Leos --Shakira – Wow! Really great work! --Leo Shakira did an amazing job. WOW! Very powerful presentation. District 24-L Lions,

I appreciate this opportunity to wish you well,

and to thank you for this opportunity to run for

the office of District Governor for 2021-2022. I joined

the Louisa County Lions Club in December of 2004. I have served

as Lion Tamer, Club Secretary for three years, 1st and 2nd Year Director,

Club President for two years, Zone Chairman for two years, 2nd District Vice

Governor (24-C), and 1st Vice District Governor (24-L).

As a region, we have shown the ability to continue to have meetings, help people

in these difficult times, bring in new Lions, and enjoy each other’s company. With

spring approaching and the vaccine, hopefully, we can move towards a return to

normalcy and less stressful times. We will still need to add and keep members,

help people in their times of need, and have fun! Roar!

I am married to Lynne Kendall and have two grown children and 5 grandchildren.

Thanks for your vote! Lion Joel

From Council Chair & Global Leadership Team District Coordinator (GLT-D)

WILMA MURPHY

I mentioned in the February newsletter that clubs should begin the process of nominating their officers for the 2021-2022 Lions Year.

Since this is a very important process, I am taking this opportunity to repeat much of what I mentioned last month.

You should now have a nominating committee which has selected members to fill your positions. During your March meeting (whether it be virtual or in person), the committee should announce the candidates. At this meeting, additional nominations may be made from the floor.

The election should be held in April. Additional nominations will not be accepted at that election. If positions have more than one candidate, the vote should be by secret ballot; if only one candi-date, open voting is acceptable.

The current secretary is required to promptly report the newly elected officers to the Interna-tional Office (MyLCI) within 15 days of the election and no later than May 15. This is important for LCI and also for the District Cabinet Secretary to have correct information for the District directory for the upcoming year, which should be ready for distribution by the first Cabinet meeting of the year, held in mid-July.

Our incoming officer co-chairs are in process of scheduling classes and instructors for officer training which will be held in June. At this time, it is not clear if training will be all virtual or class-room. All of you are aware of the reasons for this indecision; you will be provided notice as soon as a determination can be made. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

As a reminder – I am still accepting applications for RLLI which was extended from March 5-7 to April 30 – May 2 (again due to Covid). With the new schedule, the deadline for submitting applications was extended. If you could get it to me no later than March 15, that would provide sufficient time to forward them to the DG and the RLLI chair.

From Global Membership Team District Coordinator (GMT) & PDG

Revitalize your Club with New Members!

O ur District Goal is 200 new members by June 30, 2021. We are half-way with 101 as of January 31. One of the best techniques for enrolling new mem-

bers is to invite them to Zoom meetings. Let them see how you conduct business; let them see how you bond with your fellow Lions; let them see information about your service projects! March marks the 1-year anniversary of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, one year of learning how to perform service, how to conduct fund-raisers, how to bring in new Lions, and how to cope with change. We will come out of this year better because we worked together, helped our communities, and reflected on the changes we made to continue the growth of our clubs. Keep in mind that you can induct new Lions on Zoom! So, make your plans to bring in new members, help clubs grow, and help us meet our District goal of 200 new members!

And remember, through July 1, 2021, there are no fees for new members and no fees to Charter a new club.

Member Interest Survey By Lion Skip McMullan Clifton Forge Lions Club

A n Interest Survey form was recently distributed through Zone

Chairpersons as a tool for clubs to evaluate member interests, skills, and experience. With the recent implementation of immunizations, the opportunity for clubs to resume service activities and fundraisers will be increasing. The survey can provide your club with a means to identify activities that your club members feel are worthwhile to continue, as well as new ideas for members to serve your communities. Your club may not have utilized the full potential of members with skills, talents, and ideas. Lion Magazine and Paw Prints have had numerous articles featuring club initiatives where individual talents have contributed to club projects. What potential projects are waiting to be selected by your club? There may be organizations in your community that are not service organizations, but could benefit from what your members could provide. Youth groups, such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Future Farmers of America, might be interested in presentations by club members that would fit with one of their projects. The local food pantry might benefit from new shelving or storage cabinets that Lion woodworking enthusiasts could build. Be open to joint projects with other Lions Clubs and other service organizations. There is a benefit not only with combining resources but also an increased awareness of what Lions do in your area. Your club retention and recruiting efforts would benefit as well. That new or potential member may not be enthusiastic about the annual pancake breakfast, but would enjoy building/repairing picnic tables at a local park or reading to children at the library or to seniors in an assisted living facility. On the right are some questions from the Interest Survey that might identify what your club could do. If your club has had success with new projects, utilize Paw Prints to share that information with other clubs in our district. Feel free to contact me at [email protected].

NOVA Lions Mobile Sight & Hearing Unit Hello, Lions. I am Jim Alexander, a member of the Chancellor Host Lions Club. I am also the Scheduler and Treasurer for the Northern Virginia Lions Mobile Sight and Hearing Unit, Inc., and that is what I’m writing about today. You have no doubt read previous articles from our President Jim Cech detailing the efforts we have been making to improve our operations. A year ago, we were looking at the distinct possibility of closing down, and now we are getting ready to resume operations. We have made amazing strides in the past year. With that said, there are some things we still need to address. The most pressing at this time concerns the positions I now manage, Treasurer and Scheduler. Those of us on the Board of Directors sign up for three-year terms, and my term ends in October, 2021. I will not be signing up for another three years, which means we need a new Treasurer and a new Scheduler. These two positions are critical to ensure our operation can continue. I am asking everyone who reads this to consider volunteering for one of these positions. I am hoping we can find someone soon. Listed on the right are the tasks for each position. If you are looking to do work that is very important, one of these positions is for you! Anyone interested can e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks.

Dreaming of Summer By Lion Chuck Schwab District 24-L Leader Dog Chair

F ebruary has come to an end, and March winds are starting to whirl. Now is the time to think about warm summer days and thoughts of camp. For Leader Dogs

for the Blind, it’s called “Summer Camp Experience.” In past years, youth from across North America visited the Leader Dog campus for a week of adventure and fun as they explored new opportunities and learned new skills that help make them unstoppable. Of course, summer camp is always full of other fun activities, too, and at Leader Dog’s Summer Camp Experience that includes tandem bike rides, mountain climbing, and zip lining thru the treetops. It also includes time to gain leadership and self defense skills. As a special treat, campers are given the newest GPS devices to help them navigate in their home communities or wherever they want to travel. The greatest highlight of the week is when they spend a day with a future leader dog. This experience helps them decide if they are ready, or if they want a guide dog in the future. Last year was different. Instead of hosting camp in Michigan, the Leader Dog Mobility Team quickly developed a virtual camp that allowed youth to still come together and learn ways to become independent. Because it was virtual, more youth were able to participate. They even opened it up to younger campers.

Over the years, Virginia youth have attended this camp. This year, camp will be held from June 22-29. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2021. To date, it is still unknown if camp will be in person or virtual, or maybe both. This is a great opportunity for youth who are blind or visually impaired to make new friends that will last a lifetime, learn new skills, and most importantly, become independent and unstoppable. The experience is priceless, and thanks to the support from you and your

clubs, youth can attend camp free of charge. Now is the time to start planning to send a youth to camp. If you know someone who would like to attend, contact me at [email protected], and let’s help them with the application process. As always, thank you for your continued support of Leader Dogs for the Blind.

I could be a

winner!

G reetings Lions! Thank you to everyone for

their kind attention and favorable remarks following my presentation at the District 24-L Winter Conference. I thought the Zoom format worked well, in spite of a few minor problems, which I see as learning opportunities. It will definitely get better as we all experience this amazing technology. As I mentioned in my talk, funding has fallen dramatically since the Covid pandemic has severely limited social engagements. Because of this, it becomes more important for everyone to be aware of our annual Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence (LPCCI) Opportunity Drawing. Tickets have been mailed to the clubs that have traditionally supported the drawing. If you would like to receive a book of 25 tickets, please let me know. Tickets are $5 each or $100 for the book of 25, which means you get five bonus chances when you buy the whole book. The drawing will be held in late September in advance of the LPCCI Board of Directors meeting. The prize is $2,000 cash to some lucky individual or club. Wouldn’t that be a nice addition to your club’s outreach budget in these hard times? Last year, the winning entry was held by the Vette City Lions Club in Kentucky. This is a nationwide drawing, so increase your chances by buying more tickets!

Montclair Rum Cake Sales A Year-Round Fundraiser to Raise Revenue During the Pandemic By Lion Doug Taggart

C hallenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Montclair Lions have partnered with a local Manassas,

Virginia company, Cassandra’s Gourmet, on an innovative Rum Cake Fundraiser. Since September, 2020, the Montclair Lions and their affiliated Leo’s Club have raised over $700 selling the rum cakes. Cakes are available in a 4-ounce size for $5 and a larger, 32-ounce size for just $20. Cakes are available in nine flavors and have an unfrozen shelf-life of eight months. This fundraiser has helped offset revenue losses caused by events curtailed by COVID-19. To order, go to www.montclairlions.org. Email com-pleted forms to [email protected]. Orders within 30 miles of Montclair will be delivered. Orders beyond that distance will need to be picked up. As our club orders are delivered by the case, it may take several weeks for delivery.

Clarke County Taken from “The Lions Roar”

T he Clarke County Lions Club is alive and well! Some recent successes

include last year’s shrimp sales, our partnership with FISH, the Berryville Police, and Toys for Tots in giving gifts to 123 needy children, continued eyeglass recycling as a home-based service project, and awarding a scholarship to a local High School senior. Look for information soon on our Drug Take-Back Day scheduled for April 24 and the 80th Anniversary of the founding of our club. New Members

Woodbridge By Lion Andria Post “We are only as strong as those we lead.” — Dr. Jung-Yul Choi, International President

T he Woodbridge Lions Club is pleased to report that we continue to be strong, and we continue to lead!

Spring Forward … Right Around the Corner — We have a double winner in March with Daylight Savings Time beginning on March 14 and the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere on March 20. I’m ready to put away the snow blower and shovels until next year. How about you? Happy St. Patrick’s Day — One of our Woodbridge Lions of Italian heritage prominently and proudly wears a large shamrock badge that reads: “Irish for the day, but Italian forever!” So… there you have it! March Madness — It’s not just basketball! Our madness continues as we try to master Zoom meetings, socially distance from one another and, of course, hunt for masks with the colors of spring as a rite of passage. It’s a status symbol of sorts. We’ve not missed a beat in our community service operations since COVID reared its ugly head. Our projects continue to thrive from delivering food to ACTS, Westridge School cleanup and beautification, snacks for elementary school-aged children, and eyeglass recycling, just to name a few. Considerations have begun for our nominating committee as election of officers is around the corner, even though it seems to have been a very short year. Visitation — Club members Jim Jolly, Dave Post, Bill Rogers, and Karl Tritchler visited the Fredericksburg Host Lions Club on February 11. We thank Club President Lion Larry Andrews and Secretary Lion Marie Knoxville for inviting us. An informative presentation was made by guest speaker, Dr. Janet Gullickson, President of Germanna Community College. We welcome other club members to visit with us anytime. Eyeglass Recycling — Monthly, you’ll find a dedicated cadre of Woodbridge Lions supporting the eyeglass recy-cling effort in Manassas, collecting eyeglasses from approximately 34 county locations. High on the list of contributors are America’s Best and Lens Crafters. The 1,091 pairs of eyeglasses we collected this month was calculated to weigh approximately 530 pounds! WOW! We also collected a huge box of eyeglass cases and a pair of hearing aids. Donations will help many needy folks with the gift of better sight or hearing.

Woodbridge residents are a caring community that enables us to serve even more. Event lead Karl Tritchler gets regular support from members Lynne Aleknavage, Mitch Bukzin, Mitch Cropp, Bill Daly, Joe Puleo, Dee Pfeiffer, Dave Post, Bill Rogers, Phil and Sharon Schrack, and Janice and John Wagner. We welcome our newest member, Allee Emmi, who diligently works the SPOT machine too! Go Allee! Club to Support Virtual Walk — Members will again be supporting the Foundation Fighting Blind-ness DC Metro Virtual Vision Walk on Saturday, June 12. Although we cannot walk together due to social distancing, we can make an impact. Let the challenges begin. Golf Tournament — Plans are underway for our 14th Annual Woodbridge Lions Club Golf Tourna-ment on Friday, September 17, 2021 at Forest Greens Golf Club in Triangle, Virginia. Specific details are forthcoming as every effort is being made to be in compliance with current COVID-19 related regulations. Tournament leads are Jim Jolly and Bob Kahn with a vibrant team of volunteer golf enthusiasts to make it happen. BTW, we are searching for a talented, clairvoyant meteorologist to confirm and promise good weather. References are required!

Greater Falls Run

I t can be hard to be enthusiastic about our community service when clubs are hurting and trying to find virtual (or safely distanced) fund-

raisers. But our club members are still serving and raising funds. Examples include helping neighbors with smoke alarm batteries and garage door opener installations, sending cards, and making phone calls for member birthdays and illnesses, collecting food, and we're about to start a Wawa hogie-coupon fundraiser. At our last meeting, we were educated about the importance, functionality, and diversity of smoke alarms by a representative from our local fire station. After the presentation, we were inspired to make the decision to offer financial support to a local family whose home burned down the day before. Pictured on the right, the Chancellor and the Greater Falls Run Lions Clubs are featured in the Free Lance- Star. The Community Briefs section often includes photos and short articles submitted by readers.

Burke By Lion Jean Bradley

T he coronavirus has overstayed it’s welcome and because of the pandemic restrictions, the much anticipated annual Virginia Lions Eye Institute Foundation

event, usually held in February, honoring the Joe Lipomi Scholastic Merit Grant recipients was cancelled. However, our Club did its best to be flexible and positive in celebrating the occasion. We opted to have a smaller program on February 13 to recognize and congratulate the three awardees sponsored by our Club. Zoom, the new normal communications technology, virtually brought together the recipients and their families, the Fairfax County Public School teacher for the visually impaired, guests, and Lions. Bragging seems to be particularly unfitting these days in the wake of the pandemic, but Burke Lions have much to brag about our deserving recipients. Elma Ghairatmal is a freshman at Lake Braddock High School. She is a talented young artist whose artwork has been featured in the VLEIF newsletter. Andrea Darmawan is a freshman at Mary Washington University. She is a Political Science major aspiring to someday hold an elected office. Amai Wiliamson is a freshman at Northern Virginia Community College. She is a creative and quite imaginative artist majoring in Art Therapy. All three recipients have used their grants to purchase “gadgets” that have tremendously helped them with their schoolwork. What a year 2020 was! In 2021, we are looking ahead with cautious optimism to new beginnings. We know being a Lion is not about us. It is about serving others. We remain focused on service. Burke Lions are actively finding new ways and reinventing old ways of serving and raising funds. In the midst of this pandemic, the Club is growing stronger in resolve, purpose, and mission. This Club keeps on roaring!

Pictured above are works by Elma Ghairatmal (top) and Amai Williamson (bottom).
