Desert Time
Lent’s theme centers around the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert. It was a time for Jesus to discern who he was and what his mission would be. We realize that Jesus being God really did not have to do this, but Jesus being also a human being means he did. It’s what we do as we grow up and ask the same questions: What’s our purpose in life? So, this 40 day period can be revolving around these questions if we are especially young, but even those at middle-age and older may ask these questions especially those entering their mid-life crisis, so to speak, or those who now seek a new career or those who enter retirement in their life. You see folks, these questions never really just go away. In fact, they get more difficult the older we get.
So, this Lent is a great time to appreciate the desert because in the desert we find ourselves and we discover new meaning to God’s call. We begin to seek our change and see that it is good for us. Should we be still dealing with guilt or anger in our lives, it is a good time to tackle such hurdles and begin to do something about them because guilt only wears us down and anger seems to stop us from growing in new directions. The desert is perfect because it forces us to listen to God’s voice. That’s what Jesus did. He fought off those temptations of the Devil only to realize who he was, who his Father was, and what he now needed to do regarding his mission.
In order to do this, we need to go into the sometimes darkness of our souls and ask: why am I feeling so guilt-ridden or I need to ask where is my anger stemming from and how do I get over this hurdle of my life? Once we are not afraid to go into the darkness, Jesus and His Spirit enters in and allows us to discover these answers. Then and only then can we be truly free of the burdens. We begin to see life with new meaning and new purpose. We begin to shed ourselves of our old self-centered attitude and begin to see all the possibilities of our lives that can make a difference in someone else’s life. Yes, all this can happen in our 40-day period in the desert.
So, this Lent let’s make up our minds and open our hearts to savoring the moments when we can shed off our old selves and bring on the new. By Easter, we should be like new creatures in the Lord ready to answer His call to a new venture and a new purpose of life. It gets hot in that desert; so recognize we cannot do this without God’s help. His Spirit will lead us into the direction he wishes us to go. It is wonderful to know we are not alone in this endeavor. As mentioned many times: do not be afraid because the Lord is near and wishes us to enter this sacred moment to experience true freedom in Him. Take some water for the journey! We may not find an oasis to help our thirst.
A joyous beginning to Lent,Fr. Bob

ACT OF CONTRITION
Oh my God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love
above all things. I irmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy. Amen
The Stewardship Prayer
My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am.
Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them.It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray.
It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its worship, if I invite and bring them.
It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.
Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Amen.
