“The Eucharist is so essential to our one-ness with Christ that as soon as Our Lord announced It in the Gospel, It began to be the test of the fidelity of His followers. First, He lost the masses, for it was too hard a saying and they no longer followed Him. Secondly, He lost some of His disciples: "They walked with Him no more." Third, it split His apostolic band, for Judas is here announced as the betrayer.” —Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Treasure in Clay) The Church calls us to be attentive to the “Easter Duty” that requires all Catholics who are able to receive the Holy Eucharist to do so at least once a year particularly during the span of time that begins with the First Sunday of Lent and continues through to “Trinity Sunday” (June 7). Please note that deliberate, freely chosen absence from Mass is mortal sin, so the reception of the Holy Eucharist might require a prior reception of the Sacrament of Penance. With great joy I announce that Bishop Zubik has called to the Order of Deacon, Mr. Joseph Uzar of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish. Joe will be ordained on Saturday, June 20, at 10:00 a.m. The Mass will be celebrated at SEAS by Bishop William Winter. All are welcomed! Congratulations to the children who had their first experience of God’s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation this weekend!

This past Monday the members of the staff of CGS met together with Mrs. Greta Stokes-Tucker of the diocesan parish services office. The meeting gave us the opportunity for an overview of the process for the merger, slated for January, 2021, of the three parishes. The members of the finance and pastoral councils were also gathered for the same purpose. As time progresses, this bulletin will be invaluable for information you need to know as we plan for parish assemblies that will include a process for naming the new parish as well as the plans for bringing we THREE in to a new ONE. The Parish Share program is off to a new start for the year 2020. I’m still on “cloud nine” with the knowledge of your generosity for the past year’s campaign. As you are aware, many of the services we receive from the diocese (parish services meeting discussed above) cannot always be funded at the local parish level. The assessment of each parish is based on the previous year’s income (offertory, estates). The assessment MUST be paid. If it is not realized through parishioner donations, it comes directly from the parish operating account. Our accounts could not cover such assessments and at the same time leave us with money to use for parish needs. Remember, the Parish Share envelopes located in the pews of each parish are instrumental to making our goals. The assessments we begin this weekend to meet are as follows:

SS. Simon & Jude: $117,522 St. Margaret of Scotland: $69,051 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: $107,201

Tune: IN BABILONE, Oude en Niuwe Hollantse Boerenlieties en Contredansen, c.1710 Text: Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13: Herman G. Struempfle, Jr., 1923-2007 ©1993 GIA Pub.

FIRST READING | GENESIS 2:7-9; 3:1-7 The LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being. Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed there the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals that the LORD God had made. The serpent asked the woman, “Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?” The woman answered the serpent: “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, ‘You shall not eat it or even touch it,

lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is evil.” The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Revised Grail Psalms © 2010 GIA Publications, Inc Tune: Michel Guimont © 1994, GIA Publications, Inc.

1. Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, in your compassion, blot out my

offense. O wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow, and cleanse me from all of my sin.

2. My offenses, truly I know them, and my sins are always before me; against you alone have I sinned, O Lord, what is evil in your sight I have done.

3. Create in me a clean heart, O God, put your steadfast spirit in my soul. Cast me not away from your presence, O Lord, and take not your spirit from me.

4. Give back to me the joy of your salvation, let your willing spirit bear me up and I shall teach your way to the ones who have wandered, and bring them all home to your side.

Brothers and sisters: Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned— for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law. But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come. But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one, the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many. And the gift is not like the result of the one who sinned. For after one sin there was the judgment that brought

condemnation; but the gift, after many transgressions, brought acquittal. For if, by the transgression of the one, death came to reign through that one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of justification come to reign in life through the one Jesus Christ. In conclusion, just as through one transgression condemnation came upon all, so, through one righteous act, acquittal and life came to all. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so, through the obedience of the one, the many will be made righteous.

One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.” He said in reply, “It is written: One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth

from the mouth of God.” Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you and with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Jesus answered him, “Again it is written,

THE ORDER OF MASS

PROFESSION OF FAITH

UNIVERSAL PRAYER

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

all bow at the following bolder words and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.” Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.” At this, Jesus said to him, “Get away, Satan!

It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION HYMN | MERCIFUL GOD

1. Surely, you alone can save us. You pay our price with precious blood. Reaching through your great compassion. You lift up your people with love.

2. Surely, you alone uphold us. You give us strength for all our needs. Shielding with a father’s favor, you bless us with pardon and peace. 3. Surely, you alone can heal us. Yours is the will to make us whole. Soothing with a mother’s kindness, the contrite of heart you console. 4. Surely, you alone can free us. You break the bonds of guilt and sin. Bracing, till we walk uprightly, you bolster our hope once again. 5. Surely, you alone refine us. You give us grace for lives made new, Forging, through your fire and radiance, a sacrifice worthy for you. 6. Surely, you alone redeem us. You fill our dust with holy breath. Bursting from the grave in glory, you rise from the ashes of death.

CGS CATHOLIC PARISHES

ARING IVING ERVING

A BIT

ABOUT

Poverty doesn’t only consist of being hungry for bread, but rather it is a tremendous hunger for human dignity. We need to love and to be somebody for someone else. This is where we make our mistake and shove people aside. Not only have we denied the poor a piece of bread, but by thinking that they have not worth and leaving them abandoned in the streets, we have denied them the human dignity that is rightfully theirs as children of God. –St. Teresa of Kolkata

Thank you to all of the Parishioners of CGS including our Faith Formation students, who contributed so generously to our Sock Drive for Operation Safety Net! We will provide a final count in a future bulletin. Also, thank you to all who responded to the request for items for the Catholic Charities Warming Station. We will collect the requested items though March 8. During this season of Lent, we have the opportunity to give alms to those who are materially poor, and also those who are spiritually poor. As you attend Masses, our many devotions and programs, and our Fish Fries throughout Lent, there is a good chance you will encounter an unfamiliar face. Whether it is someone from one of our three parishes visiting one of our churches for the first time, someone who does not attend Mass but enjoys our Fish Fries, or someone nervously trying to find their way back because they were moved by Ash Wednesday services or Leave the Light On Confessions, please take the opportunity to smile and welcome them! We are all called to treat others with the dignity they have as children of God, no matter what their circumstances.

“When we do not worship God, we end up worshiping ourselves."

—Pope Francis, Epiphany homily, 2020

We have Holy Hours and opportunities for Adoration in all three of our CGS Catholic Community churches. Check this bulletin’s Parish Weekly Schedule and come pray with us!

GROUP #210 BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASS This is for those anticipating the birth of their child; or for those who would like to present their child for the Sacrament of Baptism. This is required before you schedule a date for the Baptism. The March class will be on Wednesday evening, 7 to 8:30 p.m., March 18, 2020, in the St. Maximilian Kolbe Room at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Call 412-857-5356, dial 1, then ext. 425 or email [email protected] to place your registration, ask any questions, and receive important information including the very essential guidelines for choosing Godparents.

The Church exists to regenerate itself by constantly bringing people into the unity of Christ. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the Bishop’s document, tells us that the responsibility of bringing catechumens and candidates into the Church belongs to all the baptized. This year several persons requesting entrance into the Church through the parish community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Margaret of Scotland, and Ss. Simon & Jude have been experiencing their catechesis in the Catechumenate Period. Their time of faith formation will continue in this Period of Purification and Enlightenment during Lent. This step in the RCIA process is acknowledged with their participation in the Rites of Election and Continuing Conversion to be held Sunday afternoon, March 15, at St. Paul Cathedral. Next Sunday, March 8, during the 10:30 am Mass at St. Margaret of Scotland, we celebrate the Rites of Sending the Catechumens for Election and our Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop. We therefore exercise our responsibility and show our support by praying with them and for them.

CGS CATHOLIC PARISHES

Thousands sought Jesus during his life. Only a few followed him to Calvary.

What will you do?

No Greater Love, A Biblical Walk through Christ’s Passion We often hear about Jesus’ Passion and death in the Gospels, the Rosary, the Mass, the Stations of the Cross, and many other devotions. Because we hear about Christ’s Passion so often, it’s easy for us to lose sight of its profound significance. But imagine if you had never heard these stories before. Imagine experiencing them for the very first time, and realizing that Jesus is a real person who really suffered and died for you and for me so that we can have eternal life. Along the way, we will unpack the biblical background to these events, the prophecies, and most especially, the ways Jesus is inviting us to walk more closely with him today. No Greater Love, a five-part DVD based Bible study program, presented by Fr. Grecco and Sharon Smoller, runs Thursdays, March 5 - April 2, at Ss. Simon & Jude church hall from 6:45-8:15 p.m. The fee is $25 per person which is necessary to cover the cost of 2 books needed for this study; scholarships are available. If you cannot afford the cost, please contact Sharon. For more information or to register, contact Sharon Smoller at 412-857-5356 or [email protected]. Filmed on location in the Holy Land, No Greater Love is a biblical pilgrimage that reveals Christ’s amazing love for us. Best-selling author Edward Sri guides you through the last hours of Christ’s life. You will walk step-by-step with Jesus from the garden of Gethsemane to Mount Calvary. Every step of the way, Old Testament prophecies, messianic expectations, biblical symbolism, and historical context shed light on the mystery of Christ’s suffering and death. Experience a deeper understanding and appreciation of God’s immeasurable and unconditional love for you—and grow closer to Jesus Another class offering of No Greater Love, A Biblical Walk through Christ’s Passion, will take place on Monday afternoons and will run from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., from March 9 –April 6, 2020, in the St. Margaret of Scotland Parish Office. It will be presented by Karen Maurer. The fee is the same. To register for this class or for further information, contact Karen at 412-857-5356 or [email protected].

ON MISSION...! During Lent, we’re still “On Mission!” ... Lent, being an extra sacred, extra holy Liturgical Season of the Church year, has a different ‘feel’ to it, one of deprivation, detachment, and of being more conscious than usual that our suffering and our crosses unite us more closely to Jesus. And, within all of that, we are to continue dying to self and living for others.

As our The Word Among Us parish daily meditation booklet for Lent tells us, the “grace of mission—being Christ to everyone you meet—begins and ends with Jesus.” So, as long as we keep our eyes on him, keep following him and walking in his ways, keep uniting our crosses to his, we can know that he’ll provide ample opportunities for us to “be Christ” to, and for, others. And that’s what it’s all about!

“Mission is all about looking outward... focusing on God and other people…”

—The Word Among Us, Lent 2020

ST. MARGARET SCHOOL

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Mrs. Shalee Crawford – 1st Grade

The Feast of Saint Brigid marks the beginning of a new planting season, and First Grade has tomato plants started in the STREAM lab. We are growing tomato plants to donate as a community outreach to help provide people with healthy produce they can grow themselves. In the process, the First Graders have learned how to plant seeds, pick out seedlings, and pot them. It’s delicate work but none of the First Graders have killed their seedlings. First Grade visits the library five days a week, and it shows! Our reading is taking off, and it’s so enjoyable to listen to the students take turns reading aloud to the class. We are constructing an Early American History

timeline in First Grade. Twelve inches represents 100 years on our timeline. Our first post, which is close to the front office, marks the arrival of the ancestors of the Native Americans, who migrated from Siberia, down through the Americas, AT LEAST 20,000 years ago. We had to go 190 feet up the hall to mark our second event—the arrival of Leif Erikson in the year 1000! Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492—492 years after the Vikings. After that, things started to move pretty quickly. First Grade led the school in the World Mission Rosary. We have also made a second batch of Rosaries to donate to the missionaries. Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade participated in the 2020 Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. Teachers selected 2 or 3 students from each grade to participate. The students then practiced their best manuscript handwriting (K-2) and cursive handwriting (3-8) before writing their final copy to be judged. Fr. Grecco & Mr. Munz were the judges choosing one student per grade level. It wasn’t an easy task for them since all the students did a fantastic job. We are pleased to announce the class handwriting winners: Kindergarten – Riley Lang 1st Grade – Carson Dick 2nd Grade – Reagan Lenz 3rd Grade – Joe Stack 4th Grade – Christian Bush 5th Grade – Cienna Rung 6th Grade – Alex Dela Cruz 7th Grade – Claire Dela Cruz 8th Grade – Morgan O’Brien Each class winner received a certificate of participation along with a $10 cash prize. The winners also had their entries submitted to Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. They each have the chance to win a state prize for their grade level. If they win the state prize then they have the chance to win the national prize of $500. The state & national winners will be announced in April. Best of luck to all our winners! Thank you to Fr. Grecco & Mr. Munz for being the judges and to our PTG for donating the cash prizes for the class winners.
