ST. BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX CHURCH BRADFORD, PA CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF BRADFORD MARCH 17, 2019

As we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent, the gospel places us in a special relationship with Jesus; we are privileged to go up to the mountain top with Jesus, Peter, James and John. They along with us were given the special privilege to witness the Divinity of Jesus shining through His humanity. We, like them, cannot grasp the fullness of what we have just seen. We come down the mountain with more questions than answers. The words that puzzled them and us were these: “This is my chosen Son; listen to Him.” They did not begin to fully understand it until after His Resurrection when he came into the locked doors of the Upper Room and said to them: “My Peace be with you.” Even then, at first, they thought they were seeing a ghost; until Jesus said to them: “Do you have anything to eat?” It was not until Pentecost Sunday when the Holy Spirit descended upon them like tongues of fire that they

understood what they had seen and heard. They left that upper room changed men – empowered, like Jesus, to let their faith shine. We too, through our Baptism, are like the disciples - called to let the light shine from within us. To better understand that I would like to share with you some verses from the African-American Hymn: This Little Light of Mine.

On Monday he gave me the gift of love, Tuesday peace from above, Wednesday he told me to have more faith, And on Thursday he brought me the gift of grace. And then on Friday he told me “Watch and Pray”, And then on Saturday what to say, On Sunday he gave me the power divine To let my little light shine

This Little Light of Mine, I’m gonna let it shine, This Little Light of Mine, I’m gonna let it shine, This Little Light of Mine, Yes, I’m gonna let it shine, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

I’m gonna shine my light bright and clear, Where there’s a dark corner in this land I’m gonna let my little light shine.

Lent is all about us asking ourselves; “How can I let my little light shine bright and clear?”

This Sunday at 4 p.m. Bishop Persico will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation at Saint Bernard.

As you know, normally the Feast Day of Saint Patrick is celebrated on March 17th, but because this year it falls on a Sunday, we do not celebrate it. Some of you may be disappointed, but have no fear. What you may not be aware of is that Saint Patrick is the principal patron of the Diocese of Erie and so Bishop Persico has granted the permission to have the Feast celebrated on Monday, March 18th throughout the Diocese. God Bless Fr. Ray

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Jesus “went up the mountain to pray” and he was “changed.” Prayer has the power to change us. This Lent set aside a few minutes each day to pray for members of your family. Pray before each meal and if you are married, spend five minutes in prayer together.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS The Spring Equinox is Wednesday, March 20. What does this have to do with marriage? Well, it may be a stretch, but since "equinox" is rooted in equality (the date that we have nearly equal light and dark) connect this with the tradition of spring cleaning. Consider cleaning together for an equal amount of time this week.
