us.” (2 Tim 1:14) “Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in

“In everything, do to others as you would have them do to

you; for this is the law and the prophets.” (Mt 7:12)

From the Administrator’s Desk…….

Because of how severe coronavirus has be-

come in Rome, all public Masses and funerals there

are cancelled until April 3rd. So, people won’t be able

to go to Mass until Palm Sunday at the earliest.

Please keep the people of Rome and all those around

the world suffering from this virus in your prayers.

Now, something fun for Lent:

Enjoy Chicken? Thank Medieval Catholic

Monks by Billy Ryan

“For the past six thousand years, humans and

chicken have shared an intricate common existence.

Today’s chickens provide us with plentiful meat and

eggs and are the most common form of poultry con-

sumed across the world.

Our current cultivated chickens descended

from an ancestral species of Asian jungle fowl, bred to

be very passive with little fear of humans and an abil-

ity to lay many eggs quickly. However, chickens were

not always the easy-going birds they are today. If you

can’t get enough of chicken or eggs, you should

probably thank medieval Catholic monks.

Archaeologists have long noted an increase in

the fossil record of chicken bones from the 9th century

AD onward. A team of researchers from Oxford Uni-

versity set out to find the cause of this increase in the

archaeological record. They first wanted to identify the

difference between today’s modern chicken and the

birds of yesteryear. In doing so, they identified

the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor gene, or

TSHR gene for short, that is one of the primary

causes of reduced aggression and increased egg-

laying ability.

While nearly 100% of chicken’s today carry

this gene, 1100 years ago less than half carried it. To

figure out what caused this sudden dramatic shift, they

looked at the years with an increase in chicken bones

to identify what pressures selected for chickens with

the TSHR gene.

In their study, they directly linked Catholic fast-

ing practices of Benedictine Monks to the domestica-

tion of chickens, because during a fast meat from four-

legged animals was not allowed while chicken was

exempted from this rule. One author of the study, An-

ders Eriksson says:

“This significant intensification of chicken and

egg production has been linked to Christian fasting

practices, originating with the Benedictine Monastic

Order, which disallowed the consumption of meat from

four-legged animals during fasting periods, but the re-

strictions did not extend to birds or eggs. These die-

tary rules were adopted across Europe and applied to

all segments of society around 1000 AD.”

Because Benedictine monks were allowed to

consume chicken during their fasts, selective pres-

sures on chickens who were easy to breed and not

aggressive to humans rapidly caused them to shift to-

wards carrying the TSHR gene. As the TSHR gene

become predominant, the modern chicken of today

appeared and the billions of people around the globe

have monks to thank for it.”

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT From the desk of Kathleen Manns, Principal…

During Lent our school’s observances include classes praying the Stations of the Cross and the Rosary as well as participation in Operation Rice Bowl to support Catholic Relief Services. Each family in our MBS school community has received a Rice Bowl into which coins or bills will be collected and turned into the school office. Please pray for our faculty as we join together this week to participate in our annual retreat day. We are currently accepting enrollment applications for the 2020-2021 school year for students entering pre-K3 through 8th grade. There are limited openings throughout our grades and we want to extend this information to our supporting parishes. Have you ever wondered what an excellent 21st century Catholic school education looks like? Do you wonder if it’s similar to your Catholic school education? Would you like to see how our students are learning in an environment that is rich in the arts and technology? Do you want to see how our students practice reverence and respect in all aspects of their education? We would love to share all that MBS does to help shape the next generation. Please contact Amanda Evans, Director of Admissions, at 410-208-1600 for more information and to schedule your tour. All are welcome. Refresh your family prayer habits and encourage each other to start and end the day in prayer together. May God Bless all our families. It’s a great time to be an MBS Dolphin!

UPCOMING DATES 3/23 5-8 p.m. Alley Oops – proceeds benefit MBS HSA 3/26 6-7:30 p.m. Family Reading Night 3/27 12:30-3:00 p.m. Professional Development for faculty

One of my favorite parts of Lent is being able to experience the Living Stations as presented by our fifth and sixth Grade

students! The children and the Catechists give their all to this performance They will begin practicing this week-end and will study and work on it until the performances! If you have never experienced it, I strongly encourage you to try and make one of the two performances! It is a very moving reenactment of our Lords Passion and death! It allows both children and adults the ability to experience the events of Holy week in a whole new light! It can be a very emotional experience! It is a true team effort with the music ministry, parish staff and Religious Education working together to create a beautiful experi-ence for the whole parish! The dates for the perform-ances are Friday April 3rd and Good Friday, April 10. The performances take place at 7 PM. It is an event suitable for the whole family so join us and bring the kids, grandkids, aunts, uncles grandparents and neighbors. I also encourage the families of our fifth and sixth grade kids to support your child, encourage them to take part in the Living Stations. It is a parish tradition that they will remember forever and it gives them an understanding of our Lord’s Passion that they just can’t get from books and pictures! So, mark these dates on your calendar, put it on your phone write it on your refrigerator!! Where ever you won’t forget!! See you there!! God Bless…, Rita

Religious Ed ~ Reconciliation Service was postponed from this weekend to next. It is rescheduled for March 22 - 2PM Grades 2 to 10 So there are no morning or eve-ning classes. All should attend the Rec-onciliation Service!

Electronic Giving

Electronic giving (called WeShare) is the preferred way to make your weekly offertory. By giving electronically, it relieves the need for about 6 parishioners to count money every Sunday (about 10 hours total). Furthermore, the parish could eventually save money on envelope printing and mailing and you would not have to write checks. The Finance Council would also be able to budget more efficiently. Please consider making the switch; it is safe and secure. Cards are avail-able in the back of church with instructions to join WeShare and have your offering sent electronically. If you need assis-tance setting this up, please don’t hesitate to call the parish office (410-289-0652). Thank you for your continuing support.

Tax Free Charitable Distribution

Need a tax break? Congress has permanently enacted qualified charitable distributions from your traditional IRA accounts. These distributions can be used to satisfy all or a portion of your Required Minimum Distribution and are free of federal and state income tax. Also, these gifts help you avoid the Medicare high income surcharge and can help reduce your income taxes on your social secu-rity benefits. Distributions must be made directly from your IRA ac-count to St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. For questions, contact the parish office at 410-289-0652

“GO FUND ME” Capital Campaign Site

Please tell your family, friends, and neighbors and/or post on social media that St. Mary’s Star of the Sea has a Go Fund Me page to help us finance the Ex-panding Our Home capital campaign. This project not only expands and renovates historic St. Mary’s Church, but also improves Ocean City’s downtown.
