First Sunday of Lent St. Cecilia Church, Leominster MA March 10, 2019
A Message From Our Pastor.
Dear Friends, I am a product of the Church of the Second Vatican Council. I was a 15 year old altar boy when I served Mass in English for the first time. That was Advent, 1965. Two years before, in 1963, the whole nation was glued to their televisions in the aftermath of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Later it was revealed that the only time the viewer audience declined was during his funeral Mass at St. Matthew’s
Cathedral in Washington, D.C., partially because churches and synagogues throughout the country were having their own services but also because most Americans aren’t Catholic and they could not understand the Mass, especially as it was celebrated in Latin and there was no interpretation. I remember serving my first English Mass and thinking that if the Mass were in English in 1963, everyone in the US would become a Catholic because they would have seen the beauty of the Mass and understood its wisdom. It was like I really understood the Mass for the first time and it just blew me away. I was probably just a Catholic school kid who had unrealistic expectations of how people’s hearts would have been touched, but, even today, after celebrating the Mass nearly 14,000 times, I am still humbled and amazed that I have the privilege of celebrating the Mass and being an instrument, albeit unworthy, of the Holy Spirit who brings forth the Body and Blood of Christ for the world’s salvation. I say this to assure you that I am not one of those Catholics who have a nostalgia for the Church of 1950, with all of its rigidity and love of power. There is, however, a difference between what the Second Vatican Council decreed and how individuals chose to interpret it. One example of that free form adaptation of the liturgy we heard on Ash Wednesday. For millennia, when ashes were imposed, the prayer used was, “Remember you are dust and into dust you shall return.” After Vatican II, an alternative version of the prayer was introduced. “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” That was not a Council decree, but an “updating” that appealed to some liturgist. What’s the difference? The ancient prayer stated our present condition as it is before God. The second prayer is human-ist in its direction. Humanism is a product of the Enlightenment, a philosophical movement that originated in northern Europe in the Seventeenth Century. Traditional theology teaches us the relationship between God and the human race. The Enlightenment emphases instead the relation-ship of the human to him or herself, and to other human beings and then, ultimately, to God. The Enlightenment prayer implies we can, on our own, change who we are and be faithful to the Gospel. The traditional prayer simply states who we are, showing that it is not ourselves but God’s grace that can change us. We are not free agents and independent beings, but children of an all-powerful God. This Lent, we can make resolutions and see what we can do on our own, or we can put ourselves in God’s hands and see what God’s grace can do in us if we allow God to be actor who directs our lives. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso

BINGO – IT’S NOT GOING ANYWHERE
The rumor mill is at work, but No, there are no plans to close bingo. However, we do need some more volunteers. We are trying to divide responsibilities so it doesn’t all fall on a few people. Do you have the time to do grocery shopping for the kitchen? Could you open up on Friday afternoon or close up on Friday night? There’s lots of even easier
jobs, like setting out the daubers or organizing the lottery tickets. You could do it one or two Fridays a month and then play on other nights.
WE have considered “paying” volunteers with free bingo cards depending on how many hours your volunteer per month.
If you’re interested, call the rectory or give your name and number to one of the bingo volunteers.
Hold the Date!....St Cecilia's is sponsoring an air conditioned motor
coach trip to the Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday, June 9, 2019.
Cost is $25.00, which includes bus ride, reserved box seat ticket and $2.00
ball park credit. Bus will leave St Cecilia's Parish Center parking lot at
around 11:00 A.M. (game time is 1:05). Call Dave & Dee at (978)537-4774
if you would like to go.
