First Reading: Numbers 6:22-27 The Lord told Aaron to bestow his blessings on the Israelites. God wanted them to know that by invoking his name they would be blessed by him. Second Reading: Galatians 4:4-7 Paul describes how through Jesus’ birth, we have been delivered from the laws that exiled Gentiles from God’s community. Through Jesus, the Gentiles became God’s adopted sons and would receive the same blessings that the Jewish converts had been promised. Gospel: Luke 2:16-21 the shepherds went to Bethlehem to see Jesus immediately understood all that they had been told about him. They praised God for what they had seen, and Jesus was given the name that the angel had chosen for him.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

“The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger; once they saw, they understood what had been told them concerning this child. All who heard of it were astonished at the report… Mary treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart.” Does it surprise me that the first to come and encounter Christ were lowly shepherds. They were certainly not the

persons I would expect to greet a new born baby. Obviously, they accepted the good news and then reported it to others. We who know the Bethlehem story so well, might not have even bothered to go to the cave where Christ was born. We might like the shepherds, have just returned to the night watch guarding themselves and their flocks. Obviously their story moved others as well. At the same time Mary both treasured and reflected, sometimes the scriptures say ‘pondered’ or weighed what she knew, saw and heard. How she felt may best be known by the mother of a newborn. It might be fitting to sit quietly like Mary and reflect upon the events. Christmas comes and goes so fast that we might overlook the great outpouring of the Father in giving us a needed Savior, and the role model of Mary treasuring and reflecting. May we treasure the coming of the Lord.

Welcome! New parishioners are asked to register by calling or visiting the parish office or by speaking to one of the parish staff. WHY A CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE A REGISTERED PARISHIONER The precepts of the Church explained that: we need to belong to a parish (your parish is the Church in the City where you are domiciled) and to contribute to its support. Everyone should do this (Canon 107). To identify yourself with a worshipping community of faith. Salvation comes to us by God in community. Religion is not meant to be individualistic. Membership in a parish community is the norm. To allow the priest of the parish to know you so that Letters of Recommendation can be given when needed. (Sponsorship/certificates)

NOVENA

TO OUR MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP

Every Wednesday at 8:30 am, followed with the Holy Mass COME AND JOIN US

ADORATION OF THE

BLESSED EVERY THURSDAY FROM

9:00 AM – 8:00 PM "The Eucharist is connected with the Passion. …To make sure that we do not forget,

Jesus gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of his love … When you look at the Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then, when you look at the Sacred Host you understand how much Jesus loves you now." Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Happy New Year!

The beginning of a new calendar year brings us a special joy and hope. It is a reminder that time is a gift of God, given to us from His eternity, for us to use to prepare for eternity. The passing of each year and each day is meant to be an exchange with God: He gives us time, and we give our days and years back to Him in service and love, bringing as much good as possible into the world and into the lives of others. The New Year is an opportunity to resolve, above all, to serve God faithfully: to believe more firmly, to hope more ardently, to love more generously. That is what makes a new year “happy,” and that is

what leads us to the happiness that never ends. MONTH 2: I’M DANCING The developing baby is now called a “fetus”, which is Latin for “little one”. She is making rapid progress developing all her external and

internal organs. During the second month baby teeth from, and fingers and toes are developing. Her ears’ lips and tongue can now be clearly seen. Brain waves can be recorded. The skeleton changes from cartilage to bone. The central nervous system is now functioning, and so 40 muscle sets begin their first exercises. By 8 weeks all body systems are present. This little one is now jumping, flipping and turning – her first dance steps!

Are you caring for your elderly parents or relatives? Do you have questions about the end of life and how our faith instructs us to proceed? Do you wonder if you made the right decision in accordance with the Catholic church? The St. Therese Respect Life Committee, and St. Therese Knights of Columbus Council 6320 jointly present a talk on: “Grave Matters –End of Life Decisions” by Fr. Pawel Tomczyk from St. Paul Inside the Walls. Fr. Pawel’s talk will expertly and delicately explore Catholic teaching on many end of life situations, including: palliative care, assisted suicide, euthanasia, hospice care, providing nutritional or extraneous life support, and more. Join us on Tuesday, January 10th at 7pm in the St. Therese Church Sanctuary for this important conversation. St. Therese Parish is hosting Catholics Returning Home. This program will run for 6 consecutive Tuesdays, beginning on Tuesday, January 17th at 7:30 PM in the All Purpose room of the church. This program is very informal and is discussion based where members are trained and have many years experience. It is a perfect opportunity for practicing or non-practicing Catholics to voice their questions or concerns about anything that may be preventing them from a full connection to God and the Catholic church. If you, a friend or family member is not feeling fully connected to their faith and the Church, this is a good way to start the process of finding the way back to better faith and the Church. Please call the program coordinator, Michael Calabrese (973-219-7312) with any questions. Registration is not required, please feel free to just stop by to see what this is all about.
