Followini; a recent to.ir cf a number of ccm.~unities in the territory to get dc.;-m to the "grass roots" of t!le '.Jersonal flyer, Virgil v, Stone, Assistant to the A~~inistrator for Personal Flying, reports that the main gripe of all operators is the length of tir:e it takes to be paid for flying tra ininr, esi ven under the GI contracts. OtherY.·ise the interest in this type of trainin~ is holding up well.

Flying an L-5 Stinscn, . .;;,. . Stone v~sited, among ot:1er places, Surr.nit, F1·.irbanl;{s. iAnle!' Hot Sprinh~,, Te.n£t.no., Jo.1-ena·, t-'toses Point, ?lome J Kotz6bue. Ur.0 lakleet, l,ic Grath and F:u·ev,ell.

The CAA has me.ny amfloyees at so~e of its isolated stations who desire to tck6 advantage of fliiht training, either under the GI bill or fer c:.sh, he raper- t.:;, but are . unnbla to d, so be~nuso no s:hools or instruc tors are &vailable.

l.ir. Stone was interest&d to note that a small numb~r of CAA pe rs<::011.:.l at ac11-kar.a and a lnrger number ~.t }io rth,.:ay have baen ta:dng: trainin;; by two "ro·,ing pi lots" oper.s. t inf undor tho su:,ervis kn of a local An~horage school. It is his understanding that most o f these students have alrc;ady soloed ar.d thet scr.i~ of them ct Northway are Gb~ut react,, for their private pilot's tick~ts.

There is a pretty little redhead out , the C=.,unications !:>uilding who ,,as ken a conside.ra'ole number of CAA por·nnel for a ride during the past year. ·r nqme is Lorre ine t!e lson and she is ,erator of CAA's lin,c tra iner.

From a massive green metal desk cove d wit,, inumerable dials and knobs, ,i s slie;ht, smilinr; younc: lady is ~igh ie stess of wind, weathe r and flight obloms confronting trainees ins id,; the nk on their mythical flights around e territory.

The · trainer is a chubby model ai.rane mounted on a pi vat v,hich a 11 mvs it

For fin,-. 1 tests upon com'.)bon of the courses, she closes the hood qn over the cockpit and sends the 1-inee on an imaginary flic;ht entirely instruments . He must taka off, fo l

(Continued from page 6) 200 hours flying time, Lorraine joined the \';ACS in February, 1943, Ironically, the day she was inducted into the tACS requirements for the iASPS were lowered to 35 hours.and she was eligible.

I

Sent to Randolph Field, Texas, in the I medical corps, Lorraine says she spent most of' her spare time in the \;ACS "try- [ ing to get out of it and into the WASPS."

The opportunity came in August when the WACS were taken into the regular Army and the women were allo9ted to resign if they wished. Lorraine did so and prcmptly went to 'iiashington, D,C,, to try in_ earnest to join the WASPS. She managed to get appointed to the April, 1944, training class and went home to wait,

She arri ,-ed in Montana the day before a letter informing her there was an opening in t:ie Neva_ mbar, 191.3, class and I she hustled_ off to S1-1eet \":ater, Texas, for her six month \:ASP training.

,','hen the \:ASPS were disbanded on December 20, 1944, Lorraine ,·,ent home to Montana, but her taste for ad-.-enture was st ill unsatisfied. · In February, 1945, she went to Seattle and trained for six months es a CA.A aircraft commu..~icator, and in September was sent to Gustavus, Alnska. She served as nn ACCOM there until September of 1946 ~nen she came to Anchorage as link trainer instructor, succeeding Doris Anderson, also an ex\\ASP and ex-communicator,

Although she looks more like 17, the comely link teacher is 27 years old. She is unmarried ar.d livos in the old Pan American dormitory. She has boen Outsid6 for three short trips sin~c coming to the territory, . and at present has n definite plans about the future.

Teaching link training is interesting and unusual, accordin~ to. Lorraine . ~st of the CAA personr.~l like the ·courses and learn s_urp:-0.sinc;ly fa.st. Her only near-casualty occurred when one woman

fainted as the hood 11as closed and the trainer began its realistic tipping end bouncing.

On the other hand, a group of v:omcn teacha~s at a ccnTcntion in Anchorago some timo ago onjoyad the link rides so much they clambered into the model plane vii th tho gusto of riding amuse::icnt cars at a carnival.

Biggest naviiational hurdle is the altimeter which bei;ins registering at ~O feet below sea level. Many of the new students eagerly begin performing their, nnvigational problems on their mythical flights while they still haw the pla:-ie underground •

All of the students finish the course with a greatly increased respect f or the many prot.lems facing a pilot while flying on instruments, Lorraine re9erted.

The Eighth region offers three standardized C.'1.A link training ccurses fer eligible personnel, a Familiarization Course of fiYe one-hour lessons, a Be.sic Course of 25 lessons and ~n AdYanced C0urse v:ilicl1 incl udes the Basic Course and 14 additional lessons. Text books are issued for the courses and certificates nwarded upcn their cc~pletion,

Those taking the first ccurse are per sons whosG job doe s not require int ens ive flight instr ument training but for whom a familiarity of the problems involTed ,·,'ill be helpful. Radio Engh, naers and t echnical nairrtcnanco men form a large part of this group,

Aircraft cr,mmunicators, tower opera~ tors and others who ·,.-ork directly ,: ith aircraft in flight may take the Basic C0ur s0 . The Advanced Course is offerod mainly for CAA personnel on flight status.

Personne l in these capacities who haya not ytt taken advantage of iink trainin~ may apply for one of the courses throu!;h th-c Perforr.-,anco Standards staff of the Oporatio:-is branch.
