Iowa Employers’ Councils are groups of employers who work in partnership with Iowa Workforce Development to meet the needs of businesses
and provide expert information on issues that effect the business community. If you would like to know more about what ECI has to offer,
visit www.iowaworkforce.org/eci. An Equal Opportunity Employer/Program
It’s hard to be over-prepared for unemployment insurance (UI) hearings. Join two officials from the Iowa Workforce Development UI division to learn what to expect before and during a hearing with an administrative law judge (ALJ), including prehearing processes, the hearing notice, and appeals before the Employment Appeal Board and beyond. They will offer tips, define stages of the hearing process, and share resources to find information relevant to the specific employer’s involvement in the UI claim process. Do not miss this opportunity to prepare for and defend against a claim filed against your organization.
Instructor:
Brenda Boten is a benefits bureau chief in the Unemployment Insurance Division of Iowa Workforce Development since 2009. Prior to joining IWD, Brenda was an executive at a non-profit agency. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Emily Chafa is a manager of the Iowa Workforce Development Unemployment Insurance Appeals Bureau. She previously served as an administrative law judge with both IWD and the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, and as a practicing attorney. Emily earned her J.D. degree from Loyola School of Law in Chicago and is licensed to practice law in Iowa and Illinois.
