Currently, we have (6) six volunteer openings on the Board. In order to serve on the Board, a Club member must be in good standing as determined by the Club, and be a property owner within the Hammock Beach Club communities. Chip and Run by Jeff Hager, Head Golf ProfessionalThe chip and run should be the workhorse of your short game. It is the most reliable shot around the green when you can’t putt.

I would estimate that at least 95% of my short game shots (from within 20 yards of the edge of the green) are played with a chip and run technique, and the other 5% is made up of putts from off the green, pitches, and bunker shots.

Getting the ball on the ground and rolling as soon as possible greatly increases the chances of the ball’s behavior being predictable. That is not to say that a chip and run is always very low to the ground; just as low as possible. A chip and run style shot can be played with the most lofted wedge in your bag, in which case some people might refer to the shot as a “pitch and run.”

In many cases where the average golfer tries to pitch the ball up in the air, the “risk vs. reward” and the uncontrollable nature of a pitch (especially from a marginal lie) make it a poor choice.

Short Game General Rules • Putt whenever feasible (i.e., IF the ball will roll rather than bounce)

• Chip and run when you can’t putt

• Pitch only when you have no choice

OVERHEAD FOOTWORK VARIATIONS by Katsiaryna Lukomskaya, Head Tennis ProfessionalWhen it comes to fundamentals of the overhead, footwork plays an important role. Quite often we focus only on how we hit the ball and don’t focus enough on how to set up to hit it. Most of the overheads that we hit require us to do some sort of backwards movement. Some of the common mistakes made by club players when moving back to hit an overhead are backpedaling and completely turning around and chasing the ball. Backpedaling away from the net with both shoulders facing the net will significantly slow the player down and often times result in a loss of balance as the upper body will tend to lean backwards. Turning away from the net is a much faster way to get behind the oncoming ball, however by doing so, the player loses the sight of the approaching ball which results in poor positioning.

There are several footwork variations that can be used to make one move more efficiently when hitting an overhead. One of the first things to figure out is how much you need to change your position. For overheads that don’t require you to move back too much, a “shuffle step” would be a player’s number one choice of movement. When you get into your shoulder turn and get both of your arms set up, you want to start shuffling (side stepping) back keeping your feet shoulder width apart for extra balance. Using shuffle steps will help you maintain great balance and allow you to move while keeping your shoulders turned.

The crossover step, is another variation you can use when you need to get back quick particularly on hard to reach overheads that land deep in the court. Start with a shoulder turn and your arms set above the shoulders. Your feet should be shoulder width apart like you are about to shuffle. From that position get your front leg (left leg for right handed players and right leg for left handed players) to stride over the back leg and keep repeating this step until you reach the desired spot on the court. Cross stepping is considered a more “athletic” move as it allows you to move much faster.

Remember, it’s much easier to move forward for a ball than backwards, however there are better and more efficient ways to retreat for shots---especially the overhead. Try practicing both variations without the ball first to get more comfortable with the 2 methods of movement.

Understanding Ingredients on Food LabelsBy Donna M Gialone, Personal Trainer/Spin Instructor/Nutrition Counselor

Food labels are an important source of information about calories and the nutritional value of the foods you eat, a crucial tool in building a heart-healthy diet. The Nutrition facts information is always displayed in the same orderly fashion and

helps you understand how much of certain nutrients that you need to limit are contained in the product per serving.

What isn’t always so clear is the ingredients listed on foods or drinks. What do all those huge words mean? Can you always tell when something has a lot of sugar? How about sodium and trans fats? It may be hard to identify ingredients that you want to reduce in your diet to keep it heart healthy, such as saturated and trans fats, sodium, added sugars and cholesterol.

Here are a few simple things to remember to help you navigate these lists. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, but that doesn’t always tell the whole story. For example, if a jar of salsa lists tomatoes first, you know there are more tomatoes in the product than anything else. But when it comes to sodium, added sugars and saturated and trans fats – which in excess can damage your heart health and increase your risk of heart disease and stroke – it can be difficult to tell just how much is in there because these ingredients can go by several names.

For instance, there are many terms used for sugar on food labels - You might see sugar listed as the fourth ingredient in a product and think it’s not so bad. But sugar can also be listed as high-fructose corn syrup or corn syrup, agave nectar, barley malt syrup or dehydrated cane juice, to name just a few.

Sodium also has several names - There’s salt, sodium benzoate, disodium or monosodium glutamate (MSG). Sodium nitrite is a source of salt in our diets. It’s in hot dogs, lunch meats and so on. It’s used to preserve fish and meats and control bacteria, so it has legitimate uses, but we should be aware that it contributes to our total salt intake. This is important to know because too much sodium can raise blood pressure, increasing your risk for heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium a day, but the average American consumes twice that much.

By far the trickiest ingredient to identify is trans fats - You won’t find these listed as trans fats at all, but rather ingredients that contain trans fats: mainly partially hydrogenated oil and hydrogenated oil. Trans fats can elevate your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. These fats raise your bad cholesterol (LDL) and decrease your good cholesterol (HDL).

While some experts say you should choose foods with five or fewer ingredients, I don’t believe we have to make label reading so complicated. Do a little research and learn to identify ingredients listed on labels and all the names used to disguise them.
