Our decisions are guided by an understanding of

the ahupuaa, the ancient Hawaiian system of land

stewardship. Our community will be a model of 21st

century environmentally and socially responsible

sustainable development. Lastly, our traditions and

The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears or the sea.

– ISAK DINESEN

THIS IS THE ISLAND OF Kauai

Of the seven now-inhabited Hawaiian Islands, Kauai

is the oldest. Polynesians navigated their canoes

to the Garden Island around 500 A.D., settling in

the valleys and forming the culture that would be

Hawaiian. They planted taro, built heiau or temples,

and created dance and chanting they called hula.

These traditions continue today, from the taro fields

covering Hanalei Valley to the hidden heiau in places

near the Wailua River.

Captain James Cook landed on the Garden Island in

1778; and in 1820, missionaries from New England

arrived. With King Kaumualii’s permission, they set

up schools and missions. Others soon followed

the missionaries’ wake-merchants, seafarers and

farmers-each bringing their way of life with them.

In time, the Garden Island evolved into an exotic

blend of cultures.

One early arrival was Robert Crichton Wyllie, a

colorful Scotsman who had served the Hawaiian

monarchs as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In the

1850s, Wyllie purchased a coffee plantation in the

rural community of Hanalei, hoping to retire there

one day and cultivate sugar. Wyllie named his land

“Princeville” in honor of young Prince Albert, son

of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. Over

the next century Princeville’s verdant acreage was

home to cattle and horse ranching, farming and

plantation living. But it was a century later that the

north shore homestead found its true calling: that

of an exclusive community. With brilliant sea on one

side, and palisades cut through with waterfalls on

the other, Hanalei Bay would become Kauai’s prize

gem on the north shore.

A TRUE SECOND HOME

Surround yourself with over 8,500 acres of tropical

landscape. Cradled by five majestic mountains, the

Princeville ahupuaa traverses down craggy slopes to

the sea. Within this circle, the emerald green Hanalei

Valley is a patchwork of historic taro farms, wild bird

habitats, equestrian paths and hiking trails.

The first of its kind. Where you will live in harmony

with nature. Where you will create a family retreat

for generations to come. Where you will care for the

land with aloha, as an ‘ohana – family. And where

you will return again and again to replenish the

soul, naturally.

A heaven on earth. An ancient ahupuaa of royal

land from mountain to sea on the North Shore of

Kauai. A playground for princes, then and now. And

an opportunity for relaxed, country living – island

style – that just a chosen few may call home.

THE HANALEI CLUB 10 | 11

A FAMILY LEGACY This is a special island to call home. An ancient

island, born of fire and sculpted by Pele, legendary

goddess of the volcano. A powerful island, filled with

an elemental energy manifested in jagged cliffs,

crashing surf and cascading waterfalls. A natural

island, shrouded in mists, ringed by rainbows and

touched by ocean breezes. An abundant island,

lush with tropical fruits, rare orchids and life-giving

taro. A royal island, the first Hawaiian home to

Polynesian voyagers.

Your family home can be a reality at Hanalei

Surf Club. Create your private retreat on royal

lands. Enjoy the array of amenities befitting

the new konohiki – stewards of the land. Share

the mana – spirit – of this special place with

future generations.

NEW PHOTO TO COME

breathe in the ocean The Hanalei Club is the ideal location for your

perfect retreat. Where you can experience the

lifestyle of your dreams. A place where you and your

family will gather in a tropical community where no

building is taller than a coconut tree. A place that

will inspire a lifetime of memories. And oceanfront

country living that will be an enduring legacy for

future generations.

WAKE UP AND CHOOSE YOUR BREAK

Naturally, life here also celebrates the ocean. Enjoy

each oceanfront day on the beach in Hanalei.

Paddle a classic canoe. Master the art of surfing.

Snorkel among the tropical Hawaiian fish. Revive

with a regimen of Hanalei-inspired spa treatments.

Or simply relax on the golden-sandy beach with

everyone in the family.

Discover your own private calendar during the

four Seasons of the North Shore. Kauai’s natural

splendors invite your participation. Fill your days

with active lifestyle pursuits, from hiking the most

inspiring trails to finding hidden waterfalls and

lush tropical valleys. Surfing. Kayaking. Fishing.

Horseback riding. Enjoying the Tennis and Fitness

Club. Or exploring quaint Kauai towns, like Hanalei

or Kīlauea. Experience the best collaboration of

nature and man.

Grab your binoculars and venture out to the

migratory seabird sanctuary in the neighboring

town of Kīlauea, with its historic 1913 lighthouse.

Consider spotting Hawaiian monk seals or

Kauai’s white tail sea eagle, a bonus. Or stay

closer to home and visit the Hanalei National

Wildlife Refuge, whose marshy wetlands are

home to 49 rare species of Hawaiian water birds,

including the ae’o (Hawaiian black-necked stilt)

and ‘alae ke’oke’o (coot).

WATERFALLS AND ONE-LANE BRIDGESFor generations, home to a multi-cultural mix of

ranchers, farmers, teachers, missionaries, artisans,

dancers and musicians. Your presence at The

Hanalei Club honors the contributions of many,

many Hanalei ancestors.

The Hanalei Club, come celebrate the Hula. Pay tribute

to Laka, the hula goddess. Visit her stone shrine at

Lohiau Dance Pavillion along a path from Ke ‘e Beach

State Park in Haena, where members of modern hula

hulau (schools) leave tokens in her honor. Or enjoy the

artful chants and legends that have preserved Hawaiian

cultural traditions for centuries.
