A message from the Principal … Welcome to Liverpool Boys High School. You are joining a school which has proudly served the Liverpool Community since 1955. We have a strong sense of tradition, and are proud of the many achievements of the boys from this school in all walks of life. High School is the exciting next stage on your learning journey. You have 6 years ahead of you to grow from a boy to a man. Our job here at Liverpool Boys is to help you on this journey. It’s not just about the things you learn in your classes, but also the things you learn about getting on with each other, the relationships you form. At Liverpool Boys we believe in three Core Expectations that are in all parts of the high school journey: Respect, Responsibility and Learning. Responsibility means that we take ownership for all our choices. This is what we teach at Liverpool Boys, and what we will always ask you to do. You have the responsibility to learn, we have the responsibility to teach. You have the responsibility to attend school every day on time, we have the responsibility to be prepared for each lesson and give you feedback. You can see both the staff and students have responsibilities at our school. Learning This is what school is all about. We hold very high expectations for all our boys – we expect you to work at your best and produce quality learning at all times. Another important part of learning is learning from our mistakes. If you make a mistake with your learning, look for ways of learning how to do better. Respect for each other and of each other’s property is what binds us together in our school community. We expect everybody to show respect for others, just as your family expects you to show respect at home. I am very happy to welcome you to Liverpool Boys High School where you too can carry on our proud traditions of Responsibility, Learning and Respect. M. Saxon Principal.

How can my parents and the community be involved at my school? Our school recognises the importance of effective partnerships between parents, students and staff addressing student outcomes. Therefore, parent and community participation is actively encouraged across the school. Our School Community Engagement Officer Ms Rosemarie Hormis can be contacted by calling the school anytime between 8:30 am and 3:15 pm Monday, Thursday and Friday. Some of the ways in which parents and community members may become involved in our school are listed below.

• Participating in our Annual Days of Community Celebrations. • Attending the various Parent Information Evening Sessions held

throughout the year.

• Attending Liverpool Boys High School Community Forums including exhibition and presentation days.

• By sharing your area of expertise with the school community, for example, in sport, cultural stories and traditions, various workplace skills, reading and writing.

• By simply dropping in or calling the school.

10

What do I do if?

• I am away from school.

There are two things you must do:

1. Your parent/caregiver must ring the school on 9602 7979 and press the number “6”. They will be prompted to leave a message regarding your absence. This helps our school a great deal because we are informed about student absences immediately. If your parent/caregiver does not leave a message regarding your absence, then a text message will be sent to your parent’s mobile requesting an explanation for your absence.

2. On the day that you return to school you will need to bring in a

student absence note and give it to your Roll Call teacher. Make sure the note contains your name, roll call class, the date of absence, a reason for the absence and your parent/guardian signature.

• I need to leave early

If you need to leave school early because of an important appointment, you will need to get a Pass out. All students who are leaving early must be collected by their parent or caregiver from the Front Reception area. The following steps will help you receive a Pass out:

1. You will need a note from your parent/carer stating your name, year, roll call class and the reason and time for your Pass out.

2. Take your note to the Deputy responsible for your year group before school on the day you need the Pass out. The note will be approved by the Deputy.

3. Take the approved note to the Student Services Office

immediately after you have the note signed by the Deputy. The office staff will issue you with a Pass out/Early leaver slip, you must show this to your class teacher when you need to leave, you are to come to the Front Office/Reception area to wait for your parent/caregiver to pick you up.

Page 11: Liverpool Boys High School · years ahead of you to grow from a boy to a man. Our job here at Liverpool ... we have the responsibility to teach. You have the responsibility to attend

11

What do I do if? Cont. from previous page

4. You will not be able to leave without a responsible parent/carer who is over the age of eighteen (18) or who is nominated on your emergency contact list.

• I am late to school If you are late to school report to the FRONT RECEPTION OFFICE you will need your student ID card to print and collect a late slip. You will need to provide this to your class teacher with a note from your parent/caregiver on the day/next day explaining the reason why you were late.

• I feel sick.

SICKBAY IS OPEN ALL DAY IF YOU ATTEND DURING CLASS TIME YOU WILL NEED A

SICKBAY PASS WHICH YOU CAN GET FROM YOUR CLASS TEACHER.

If you are in class and you are not feeling well or you need First Aid, ask for a Sick Bay Slip from your teacher to go to sick bay located in the Student Services Office. Give your note to one of the Office Staff. If you are seriously ill, your parent/guardian will be contacted and asked to pick you up. You can only stay in Sick Bay for a short time. Only very basic First Aid can be given in the school. An ambulance will be called if there is a serious problem.

FIRST AID SICKBAY

TOILET KEY IS AVAILABLE ALL DAY AT THE STUDENT SERVICES OFFICE AND WILL ONLY BE GIVEN WITH AN OUT OF CLASS NOTE.

12

What do I do if? I need a travel pass.

Bus & Train • New applications for Opal Card for all students must be completed

online. You should bring your completed application to the Student Services Office where it will be verified by the school and sent to transport NSW.

I lose my Bus/Train pass. • All OPAL transport enquiries to be done online

At transportnsw.info/school-students. School Student Concession/ Identification Cards. • Once a student has turned sixteen years of age a school student

concession identification card is available from the Student Services Office. These cards can be used within the State Transit Authority System.

Page 13: Liverpool Boys High School · years ahead of you to grow from a boy to a man. Our job here at Liverpool ... we have the responsibility to teach. You have the responsibility to attend

13

What do I do if? • I need to see the School Counsellor. If you have a problem and

you want to talk it over with a Counsellor:

1. See your Year Adviser and ask him/her to make an appointment for you.

2. See the Head Teacher Student Engagement, Mrs Kelly. • I need to make an appointment to see my Teacher.

If you need to make an appointment to see your teacher, you will need to go to the back office and the ladies will message your teacher, your teacher will get back to you with an appropriate time to meet.

• I lose something.

If you lose anything in the school, the first place to look is where you

think you may have lost it. If it was lost in a classroom, go to the staffroom and ask if your teacher found it. If it is not there or you lost it somewhere else, go to the Student Services Office and ask if the lost item has been handed in. If you find anything in the school that appears to be a person’s property, hand it in to the Student Services Office.

• My teacher is away.

If your teacher has not arrived for your class, wait five minutes, one

student is then to go to the staffroom to find out if your teacher is away. If there is no teacher for your class, move to the breezeway, sit down and get some quiet work out to do. Card games and ball games are not allowed to be played during this time. You need to stay in this area for the whole period in case a teacher becomes available or someone needs to speak to you.

EXCURSIONS Most projects will have hook events that will at times require students to travel to venues across Sydney. Students will need to have a parent consent form completed and returned, along with any payment for each excursion. Payment should be made to the student services office on online POP payment though out website. Parents may also pay in person using Visa, Mastercard and EFTPOS. Students can pay cash before school, recess and lunch.

When possible transport by rail and public bus will be used and is the easiest and cheapest mode of travel for such events. All students will need their own personal Child/Youth Opal Card for travel. Their regular free Bus/Rail Opal card is not valid for school excursions. See the Opal card website for further details https://www.opal.com.au/en/about-opal/opal_for_kids/.

BYOD (Bring your own device)

Liverpool Boys High School recognises the need to prepare our students for a rapidly-changing world, where technology plays a large role in our personal, social and professional lives. We know that the use of technology is integral in the delivery of quality teaching and learning in the 21st century classroom.

The NSW Department of Education has advised that schools may implement a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program so that students can work with their own devices using technology as a tool to enhance and support their learning. From 2019, it will be compulsory for each year 8 to 12 student to have their own digital device to bring to school every day. The reason for this is in the modern day of learning, our boys need access to technology to complement their learning.

Your son can still use the computers at school, particularly with specialised subjects such as Multimedia and Design and Technology. However, school resources are limited and technology is required all the time, not just some of the time. By having BYOD, students can access information and complete work Anytime, Anywhere. What digital devices are permitted?

• Tablets (iPads, Androids, Galaxy etc)

• Laptops 5

Can my son’s mobile be used as device? NO – a mobile phone has limitations. Yes it can access information but it is difficult to enter information and edit. A tablet or laptop is more appropriate for school use. How much money should I spend? PLEASE only spend between $200 - $350. Expensive tablets and laptops ARE NOT recommended and are not needed. What devices are recommended?

• Chromebooks · • Samsung Galaxy tablet · • Lenovo tablet · • Laptops under $350

What will my son be doing on this device? Researching, using Google Apps, Office 365 and other online applications. If you are experiencing financial difficulty and can’t afford to buy your son a device, please contact the school – all information will remain confidential. Perhaps make this a Christmas present or upcoming birthday present. This device will be a worthwhile investment for your son’s education.

Page 16: Liverpool Boys High School · years ahead of you to grow from a boy to a man. Our job here at Liverpool ... we have the responsibility to teach. You have the responsibility to attend

16

What happens in Sport? All students in year 7 and 8 participate in integrated sport. Integrated sport is taught by PE teachers and other staff who are skilled or trained in sport. Integrated sport is timetabled into your son’s regular timetable and each class is allocated four lessons a cycle. Students are expected to bring correct PE uniform and shoes for each lesson. How is sport different to PE? Sport encourages students to play. Sport is a healthy way to promote fitness, wellbeing, exercise, relationship building and communication rather than specific skills. Although students do learn about the various rules of the sports they play, the lessons are not outcome focused. Sport and PE are compulsory for all students from year 7-10. Sports Uniform All students are expected to participate in sport wearing their sport uniform due to Occupational Health and Safety reasons. It is also a DEC requirement that all students wear a hat while playing outdoors.

Some of the sports offered at Liverpool Boys High School include: Basketball Rugby Union Oz Tag Volleyball Soccer Indoor Soccer Hockey Tennis Cricket

Sporting Awards Inter-School Competition Students who participate in the inter-school competition on Wednesday afternoon and qualify for the finals are recognised on morning assembly and at the Sport Presentation in December each year. Winning teams are presented with pennants. Sportsman of the Year Students are awarded Sportsman of the Year in three categories:

• Junior Years 7 and 8 • Intermediate Years 9 and 10 • Senior College 1 & College 2

Involvement in a variety of sporting events during the year qualifies a student for nomination for these awards.

1. Student behaviour will have a direct effect on a student’s eligibility to represent the school.

2. Suspension or return from suspension may affect your school representation (including reason and date of return)

3. Students School Attendance (late, truants etc.) must be 80% to represent sport (DP discretion).

4. All Class work must be up to date and N Awards to be completed 5. You must wear full school uniform to participate

In Addition the following courtesies must be observed by players:

6. Play for the fun of it. Compete by the Rules and always abide by the referee’/umpires’ or touch judges’ decisions.

7. Control your temper. Make no criticism either by word or gesture. 8. Work equally hard for yourself and your team – your team’s

handicap your team, and may expose you to the risk of serious, lifelong injury.

11. Be a good sport. Encourage fellow team members. 12. At all times co-operate with your coach, team mates and

opponents – without them you do not have a competition. Note: Deputy Principals have final discretion of whether a student can represent in their chosen sport.

FOOTWEAR REQUIREMENTS

The Department of Education states in the publication “School Uniforms in New South Wales Government Schools (2004)’, that under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 schools must ensure that students are not exposed to health or safety risks while they are on Departmental premises. The school has a duty to require students to wear appropriate footwear so as to avoid injury. The DEC policy clearly states: “It is mandatory that students carrying out practical activities using chemicals or equipment in schools wear enclosed leather footwear. Sandals, open footwear or high heeled shoes must not be worn in workshops or laboratories”. Our school is a ‘uniform school’ as supported by the school community and the agreed uniform shoes are shown below. ACCEPTABLE STYLES: The school expects that students wear TOTALLY BLACK closed in leather style shoes. They must cover the top of the foot and have a non-slip sole. It includes the following types: STYLES THAT ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE: Students MUST NOT wear black soft “ballet” style shoes, open styled “Mary Jane” shoes, canvas shoes or any similar. It includes those shown below:

These footwear requirements are for all school activities including excursions and mufti days. The wearing of thongs to school at any time is not permitted. The school’s uniform policy requires ALL students to wear acceptable footwear as outlined above. The requirements are designed to be as cost effective as possible for parents.

Learning Support Learning Support Team at Liverpool Boys At Liverpool Boys High School all students attend mainstream classes. We provide a comprehensive and inclusive education program. Sometimes students need additional support in their learning and at Liverpool Boys High school there are number of support services that we can provide. Learning Needs – Some students require additional learning support for a variety of reasons. If you are a student who has had assistance during Primary School you will most likely need some help in High School. You or your parents can contact the school any time if there are concerns about learning. Health and Medication – if you have health problems need to take regular medication or have a short or long term illness it is best that the school is informed and kept up to date. For example, if you need to use a Ventolin puffer or preventative medications for asthma, the school needs to know and those details are recorded on our data system. In the event that you are unwell and medical assistance is required, it’s very important that the school is aware of all medications you are currently taking. Often we formally write a Health Care Plan in consultation with your parents, for students with long term illness or conditions, particularly if the condition involves taking medication at school (e.g. asthma, diabetes, ADHD). You are not allowed to carry medication on you and can only take medication at school when you are supervised by a staff member, Ventolin being the only exception, as long as you have a current Health Care Plan. Staff who assist students with their learning include the LAST(Learning and Support Teachers), EALD Teachers (English as an Additional Language of Dialect), Teacher’s Aide, School Counsellor, Careers Advisor, Librarian as well as your Year Advisor’s and Head Teacher Admin. Regardless of what your needs are, the staff at Liverpool Boys High School are always ready to assist you in whatever you need help in, you just need to ask. Preparing for High School… Preparing for high school Entering high school is an exciting time for students. They are moving into what is often a larger school environment. This can lead to anxiety or periods of unease. Here are some steps parents and caregivers can take to help students start high school on a positive note.

• Be interested and enthusiastic about their move to high school.Your encouragement will help your child to make a successful transition to High School. Listen to their experiences and expectations. Don't dwell on your own experiences of school.

• Attend the High School Orientation DayIf your child will be entering high school then keep a look out for the orientation days which high schools hold in Term 4. These days are designed to help parents and their children prepare for starting high school. Some children, because of pressure from their peers, will try to discourage their parents from attending orientation days. Being there will help you understand your child's experiences better.

• Make sure travel arrangements to and from school are organised.Organise travel passes. This will help settle some of the concern about independent travel. Talk about back-up travel arrangements, for example, what to do if a bus or train doesn't come. Discuss the changes every student will experience.Emphasise that many people feel apprehensive about changing from a small primary school to a larger high school, and that there will be people to help them adjust.

• Organise your child's uniform well before the first day of school.Having the new uniform will help your child start to feel a sense of belonging to the school.

• Learn about school routines and timetables.Talking to student already enrolled at the school can be useful in finding out information about things such as sporting venues used by the school and school finishing times. The school will provide information before it's needed.

• Help your child to develop good study habits.Try to provide them with somewhere private and quiet to study. Help your child to set aside a particular time to study. Work out a daily timetable that incorporates all your child's needs and interests. Regularly viewed TV programs, club activities and sport should all be part of the timetable. Ultimately they will need to manage their own study and they can guide you in what is helpful for them.

• Practice organisational skills. In the first few weeks of high school you might want to check with your child that they have the right books for the following day. You will quickly encourage a good habit.

• Discuss emergency and safety issues.Talk about these issues - including crossing roads or taking essential medication - simply and without emotion allow your child to contribute their views. Find out who the staff are at the school that can help them if they need it on issues such as medication.

• Let your child know that you trust them and that they can trust you. Keep communication open about all your child's experiences, and make sure they know you're available if things go wrong.

FAMILY LAW ISSUES AND THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

The Department recognises that some families are subject to family breakdown. In meeting its obligations to the students and parents, the department relies on the following principles Decisions should be made on the basis of ensuring the continued effective and efficient operation of the school; • The education of a child is primarily the responsibility of the child’s parents; • School decisions are based on the what is considered to be in the best interest of the

child; • Where parents cannot agree between themselves on what is in the child’s best

interests, it is the role of the court, not the school to determine those interests; • The school is not the appropriate place for family disputes to be resolved nor is it

appropriate for school staff to resolve such issues; • Decisions should be made in an unbiased manner and as far as reasonably

practicable, without favour to either parent; • The obligations imposed by the legislation, such as the Privacy and Personal

Information Protection Act 1988 also need to be considered when dealing with family law related issues;

• The continued effective and efficient operation of the school and parents’ obligations under the Education Act 1990 to ensure their school age children attend school or receive home schooling take precedence over any interests parents may assert they have under the Family Law Act 1975.

Parents have a responsibility to advise the school immediately if any changes in families circumstances occur which have the potential to impact on the relationship between the school and the parents and/or students. If court orders are obtained by one or both parents, copy of the orders should be provided to the school as soon as possible. In the absence of any notification to the contrary (such as a court order), it will be assumed that both parents retain a shared and equal responsibility for their children. This means that the school will recognize that each parent has equal duties, obligations and opportunities in relation to matters involving their children’s education at the school. The department has developed a detailed policy to assist schools manage family law related issues. The main features of the policy are summarized below:- - In the absence of court orders to the contrary, generally each parent can enrol a child

in a government school. - Except in specifically defined circumstance, a child must be enrolled using the name

that appears on his or her birth certificate. - In the absence of court order to the contrary, each parent is entitled to know at which

school his or her child is enrolled - Generally each parent will be given the opportunity to participate in school related

activities, including teacher/parent interviews and can have access to documentation relating to his or her child;

- Unless specifically authorized by a residential parent, children will not be permitted to leave school during the course of a school day
